How Could This Be?

That is the question so many people and pundits alike are asking about the state of our democracy… many reasons and so little time to correct the discrepancies…..

I guess we can blame the Dems or the GOP or the nation as a whole or fear or a wealth of other reasons but to me there is only one reason…..

Ever heard of the Telecommunications Act of 1996?

Of course you have not…..for it is too mundane for your attention as long as Swamp People is renewed to care.

President Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The act, signed into law on February 8, 1996, was “essentially bought and paid for by corporate media lobbies,” as Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) described it, and radically “opened the floodgates on mergers.”

The negative impact of the law cannot be overstated. The law, which was the first major reform of telecommunications policy since 1934, according to media scholar Robert McChesney, “is widely considered to be one of the three or four most important federal laws of this generation.” The act dramatically reduced important Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations on cross ownership, and allowed giant corporations to buy up thousands of media outlets across the country, increasing their monopoly on the flow of information in the United States and around the world.

“Never have so many been held incommunicado by so few,” said Eduardo Galeano, the Latin American journalist, in response to the act.

Democracy in Peril: Twenty Years of Media Consolidation Under the Telecommunications Act

To me all this division has been fed by the corporate media to drive the news cycle to what they want the reports to be.

But do not take my word for it….this is the summary offered by the Clinton White House of what the act contains….

…this legislation will lead all Americans into a more prosperous future by preparing our economy for the 21st Century and opening wide the door to the Information Age.

Universal Service

The President and Vice President want to ensure that all Americans have access to the benefits of the information superhighway. The Act ensures that schools, libraries, hospitals and clinics have access to advanced telecommunications services, and calls for them to be connected to the information superhighway by the year 2000. It will help connect every school child in every classroom in America to the information superhighway — opening up worlds of knowledge and opportunities in rural and low-income areas.

The V-Chip

Because President Clinton and Vice President Gore believe strongly that families should be able to exercise control over how the media influences their children, the Act includes a provision calling for a computer chip, called the V-Chip, to be installed in every new television set. This provision is critical to give parents control of the television programming that comes into their homes by allowing them to block electronically violent or other objectional material.

Media Ownership

Because President Clinton and Vice President Gore believe that diversity of voices and viewpoints is critical to our democracy, the Act will prevent undue concentration of television and radio ownership. The Act limits the number of stations one entity can own to stations that reach up to 35 percent of all national TV viewers, and keeps existing rules that forbid one

company from owning two TV stations in a local market, or a newspaper and TV station in the same market, or a newspaper and cable in the same market. The Act also maintains the ownership ban of a cable company and a broadcast company in the same market.

Phone Service

The President and Vice President believe that when the walls of regulations are brought down, prices come down for American consumers. This Act breaks down the Berlin Walls of regulation that previously kept local Bell Telephone companies and long-distance telephone companies from competing with one another, while keeping safeguards in place to ensure competition and serve the public interest.

Fancy words….that shows the ends that the MSM will go to own the news and the news cycle… well as making certain candidates proper for the American voter…

Is it any wonder that the nation’s “liberal” cable news stations CNN and MSNBC can barely contain their disdain for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign and even (to a lesser degree) for that of Elizabeth Warren while they promote the nauseating center-right candidacies of the bewildered racist and corporatist Joe Biden, the sinister neoliberal corporate-militarist Pete Butiggieg and even the marginal Wall Street “moderates” Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris? Next time you click on these stations, keep a pen and paper handy to write down the names of the corporations that pay for their broadcast content with big money commercial purchases.

Making American (History) Great Again–Part 35

For almost a year how I have been giving my readers an “alternate” look at American history…..that is not what the mainstream media and most reactionary history teachers are willing to depart to the people.

Maj. Sjersen is a historian and history professor and his series is well worth the time to read and get the “rest of the story” when it comes to American history……in case you have missed the series then this will help get you caught up…..

Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4; Part 5; Part 6; Part 7; Part 8; Part 9; Part 10;Part 11; Part 12; Part 13; Part 14; Part 15; Part 16; Part 17; Part 18; Part 19; Part 20; Part 21; Part 22; Part 23; Part 24; Part 25; Part 26; Part 27; Part 28; Part 29; Part 30; Part 31; Part 32; Part 33; Part 34.

As the 20th century churns to a close we elected the most corporate friendly president, Bill Clinton…..and he is a Democrat.

I did not vote for Clinton and did not approve or support his policies……his policies created the crash of 2008…..his policies lead to the creation of the corporate media that now controls all we see and hear……

He was bright, he knew the details of domestic policy in and out, and he was a natural politician. William Jefferson Clinton, the “man from Hope,” Ark., grew up poor and rose to spectacular and unexpected heights. But he was also deeply insecure and obsessively needed to be liked, and, ultimately, it was unclear just what, if anything, the man believed in. Although Bill Clinton dreamed of being a great president, in the vein (he thought) of John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt, his abundant ambition was not enough to produce that result. But whatever his failures as a leader and a person, he reached voters, “felt their pain” and, on the surface at least, seemed to possess a common touch, an everyman empathy that drew multitudes to him. Having grown up among black people in Arkansas, he seemed particularly comfortable around African Americans, leading the famed novelist Toni Morrison to dub him “the first black president.” In time, she, and many of  her fellow African Americans, undoubtedly came to regret those words as Clinton’s rather conservative, “New Democrat” policies proved to be disastrous for most blacks in the United States.

This series a terrific look into the making of this country and the people.

Leave It To Bubba

It is no secret that I was NOT a supporter of Bill Clinton by any stretch of the imagination…..I believe it was his policies that caused so many of the problems we have today….his push to repeal Glass-Steagall ( GLASS-STEAGALL ACT OF 1933) lead to the crash of 2008….his push for NAFTA lead to the rush of immigrants…..his conservative policies have lead us to this point in our history.

But the biggest screw up was his wimpy pursuit of Osama bin Laden after the bombings in Kenya….and if he had been more aggressive then there is the possibility that 9/11 may not have happened.

The White House Situation Room was buzzing. It was fall 1998 and the National Security Council (NSC) and the “intelligence community” were tracking the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, the shadowy mastermind of terrorist attacks on American targets overseas. “They’ve successfully triangulated his location,” yelled a “Sit Room” watch stander. “We’ve got him.”

Beneath the West Wing of the White House, behind a vaulted steel door, the Sit Room staff sprang into action. The watch officer notified National Security Advisor Sandy Berger, “Sir, we’ve located bin Laden. We have a two-hour window to strike.”

Characteristic of the Clinton administration, the weapons of choice would be Tomahawk missiles. No clandestine “snatch” by our Special Operations Forces. No penetrating bombers or highspeed fighter aircraft flown by our Air Force and Navy forces. No risk of losing American lives.

Clinton’s hesitation did nothing to make the US safer…..and allowed Osama to function worldwide.

A Clinton Dynasty?

Closing Thought–21Aug18

We have these petty dynasties in the political world……the Kennedys, the Bushes and now possibly a Clinton Dynasty.

It began with Bubba and has continued with Hillary and now their daughter Chelsea could keep up the political dynasty……

Chelsea Clinton will not rule out a future in politics. Per the Guardian, the daughter of Democratic superstars Bill and Hillary Clinton was plugging her children’s book at the Edinburgh international book festival when the question of her potential future in elected office was posed. While bashing Trump, the New York City resident said she is a big supporter of her state and local officials. However, if one of those politicians were to retire, Clinton can’t say exactly what she’d do. “If that were to change, if my city councillor were to retire, if my congresswoman were to retire, my senators, and I thought that I could make a positive impact, then I think I would really have to ask my answer to that question,” she said.

Meanwhile, Clinton did strike a somewhat political tone when addressing the Trump administration’s handling of undocumented immigrants. “I think I’m just so fundamentally my mother’s daughter that I’m far more outraged by the Trump administration ripping children away from their families at the border and not having reunified those children with their families now for months, than I am about anything he has ever done to my families,” she said. Per the Hill, Clinton said she is a “definite no now” in answer to whether she’d seek office, but “a definite maybe in the future.”

A definite NO?  That is about as accurate as all those politicians that want to spend more time with their families…yep it is a BS answer to a direct question….

I said back during the Hillary run and Chelsea was trotted out to support mom that it was just getting her ready to step up when her parents are through scamming the public….the American people.

She has learned from the best about greed and using government to achieve it… she became a hedge fund manager and married one so all the greed is there so politics would be the perfect place to go for the future.

How About An Apology?

Remember that famous blue dress that sank Pres. Clinton?  It was Monica’s dress that she wore when she had the liaisons with Clinton complete with stain and all.

Clinton was impeached and the country went crazy with the crap of division…….but he, Clinton, did not resign instead he stuck it out and the c nation was split along political lines.

After all these years Clinton has finally opened up about the impeachment and the affair…..(I guess he had to if he wanted to sell any books of his new novel)

Bill Clinton did an interview with NBC News to plug the new novel he’s written with James Patterson, but the former president spent a good deal of time instead talking about his old behavior in light of the MeToo movement. In the sometimes testy back-and-forth with Craig Melvin, Clinton defended his decision not to resign amid the Monica Lewinsky scandal and acknowledged that he has not personally apologized to her. Clinton said he has publicly apologized to Lewinsky (NBC played a 1998 clip of him doing so), but not privately. “I’ve never talked to her,” he said when pressed on the point by Melvin. Clinton also said he was correct not to resign. “I think I did the right thing. I defended the Constitution.” Later, Clinton asked Melvin if he thought John F. Kennedy should have resigned and accused the reporter of presenting a biased picture of him.

The AP describes Clinton as “both vague and combative” during the interview. This might be an example of vague: Asked how he “would have approached the accusations differently” today if he were president, Clinton responded, “Well, I don’t think it would be an issue because people would be using the facts instead of the imagined facts. If the facts were the same today, I wouldn’t.” And he seemed to bristle at comparisons to President Trump. “A lot of the facts have been conveniently omitted to make the story work, I think partly because they’re frustrated that they got all these serious allegations against the current occupant of the Oval Office and his voters don’t seem to care.” He added that he doesn’t think Trump has gotten a “pass” on the allegations against him, but Trump “hasn’t gotten anything like the coverage that you would expect.”

As usual Clinton was an arrogant tool…..making myself out as some sort of victim in all this….and he stated that he has not apologized to Monica in person……really?

I expected NO less from Bubba……as usual he thinks he is all that and was right in the way he handled the situation……as usual he is wrong today as he was 25 years ago…..

Monica deserves an apology from Clinton in person …after all the man misused his position for a sexual favor……

Clinton And Terrorism

On that fateful day in September of 2001 when the Twin Towers came down from a terrorist attack we have been fighting terrorists wherever we find them…..but years before the attack there were many terrorist attacks that involved the US….the Twin Towers in the 1990’s, the Embassy attack in Kenya….these attacks were on Bill Clinton watch and he had several opportunities to give terrorists a black eye but he backed down time and time again…..

When it comes to Bill Clinton’s record on terrorism, there’s no need to invent fictional scenarios to show how ineffective he was; the truth is bad enough.  A few months after 9/11, Byron York went through the record — including the former president’s habit of taking polls to see how he should respond to terrorist attacks — and came up with this report, from the December 17, 2001 issue of National Review:

June 25, 1996, a powerful truck bomb exploded outside the Khobar Towers barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, tearing the front from the building, blasting a crater 35 feet deep, and killing 19 American soldiers. Hundreds more were injured. When news reached Washington, Presi dent Bill Clinton vowed to bring the killers to justice. “The cowards who committed this murderous act must not go unpunished,” he said angrily. “Let me say again: We will pursue this. America takes care of our own. Those who did it must not go unpunished.” The next day, leaving the White House to attend an economic summit in France, Clinton had more tough words for the attackers. “Let me be very clear: We will not resist” — the president corrected himself — “we will not rest in our efforts to find who is responsible for this outrage, to pursue them and to punish them.”

There were several occasions where Clinton could have ordered a strike that would have killed Osama and for whatever reason that he had he chose not to act…..and possibly that failure to act lead to the massive attack on 9/11.

America’s First Black President

I remember when that was said about Bill Clinton….and today it sounds as moronic as it did back in the late 20th century.

I never understood why so many Black people think so highly of Clinton (that would be Bill not Hill)…..of all Americans he screwed them far more than any of the others.

His determination to make his Wall Street donors happy he helped remove Glass-Steagall which lead to the crash in 2008…but the on that I think was his worse path was for welfare reform….

This is a piece from 1997…..

I HATE welfare. To be more precise, I hate the welfare system we had until last August, when Bill Clinton signed a historic bill ending “welfare as we know it.” It was a system that contributed to chronic dependency among large numbers of people who would be the first to say they would rather have a job than collect a welfare check every month—and its benefits were never enough to lift people out of poverty. In April of 1967 I helped Robert Kennedy with a speech in which he called the welfare system bankrupt and said it was hated universally, by payers and recipients alike. Criticism of welfare for not helping people to become self-supporting is nothing new.

To this day he is still held in high regards by Blacks and I still cannot see it.  He did nothing to make the poor less so….he did grease the palms of his high price donors at the expense of the nation’s poor.

He will never be high on my list of presidents.

The Death Of Clintonism

All Hail!  The King and Queen have left the room…..(and the peasants danced)………

I have not hidden my distaste for anything Clinton.  To me they are NO better than those banksters of years ago….they are only in it for the wealthy….and I do understand why so many black people think that the Clintons are all that and a bag of chips…..they did little to improve their lives or the lives of their children…

I will say I was not a Trump supporter neither did I support Clinton but the one thing that I hope this past election has given us, as a country, is the death of “Clintonism”.

In September 1963, two months before his death, John F. Kennedy mused aloud to his old friend the journalist Charles Bartlett about the prospects for the 1968 presidential election, in which, he presciently worried, his brother Robert might run against Lyndon Johnson.

“He gave me the feeling he wasn’t pleased,” Bartlett would recall years later. “He wanted a record of his own. I sensed that he wanted the Kennedy administration to be Jack, and Bobby was going to turn it into a succession thing. Jack didn’t want a dynasty, although I am sure his father would have wanted that.”

The fun thing for me is that I am not alone in my wish to see the Clintons just slink back into the confines of the Foundation never to be a problem again…….

With Hillary Clinton’s defeat in the 2016 election, progressive activist Van Jones says that it’s time to move on not just from the Clinton family, but the kind of politics they represent.

Appearing on CNN Sunday, Jones noted that the Democratic Party’s base has gotten significantly more progressive since Bill Clinton was president in the 1990s.

In fact, he said that several of Clinton’s policy decisions — from his championing of NAFTA to his support from the 1994 crime bill that introduced the “three strikes” policy — came back to haunt Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign
I am with Jones on this…..time for Democrats to embrace a more progressive agenda….one that will benefit every man, woman and child in this country….and let the Clintons become a footnote in American history.

Another Clinton President–Bad Idea

We enter the home stretch of the 2016 election….people will now start to pay attention to the person that will solve problems….not generate more……

For the life of me I cannot understand the support that the American people have for Hillary Clinton or that matter why they look back on Bill’s presidency with nostalgia…..the first “black” president?  Seriously?  Must be the “crack” talking.

I mean come on….his presidency saw an huge increase in inmates, loss of manufacturing, the worse welfare gutting and overseas adventurism….oh there is more….and yet many look back a sigh heavily and dream of the glory days…..he and his buddies at the DLC, commonly known as “Blue Dog” Democrats, screwed this country royally….and now they are thinking of voting for his wife who has the same designs and desires and her hubby….what are you f*ckers smoking?

But hey….take a look at what her d/bag of a hubby did to this country…..

Bill Clinton remains one of America’s most popular presidents. A national poll last March by NBC and the Wall Street Journal found 56 percent of Americans had a clearly favorable view of Clinton. That’s long been true for African Americans—from novelist Toni Morrison famously calling him the “first black president” while in office, to books explaining his appeal after his presidency ended.

Clinton has used this popularity to build his enormously ambitious global foundation, collecting $2 billion in assets for many anti-poverty and health initiatives, as well as building a personal fortune from speechmaking estimated at $30 million or more. In recent years, most of the public has forgotten what Clinton did as president, even as he has steadily been in the news.

You people are about to make a big mistake……

A Primer on Bill and Hillary Clinton Scandals

I know there are some out there that are just beside themselves because the Clintons are a breath away from the White House (again)…..these people are constantly trying to throw every scandal that the Clintons were near at their faces with the hopes that something will stick…..

I thought I would try and help my more Right leaning readers with a primer that they can print out and use when writing about the Clintons…..

If one is going to go off on Hillary then there should be some fact in there to at least they sound credible….(just trying to help)…..

The release of the Benghazi report should have made this a great week for Hillary Clinton, but questions about her email—and a questionable social call by Bill Clinton—have cast clouds over it.

This should have been a great week for Hillary Clinton. On Tuesday, the special House committee appointed to investigate the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi on September 11, 2012, released its long-awaited report. (Well, the majority report. Democrats on the committee released their own polemic the day before.)

The report turned out about as well for Clinton as she could have hoped. While the panel found fault with the way the Obama administration, and Clinton’s State Department, ran security for embassies and other U.S. stations around the world, it did not find any new bombshells about the night of the attacks, no details that would suggest Clinton could have acted differently that evening and saved the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others. That outcome largely vindicates Clinton’s claims all along, and it mostly puts the question of the attacks to rest after a long and extremely detailed investigation (though not, as Democrats like to claim, the longest). Clinton’s political opponents are unlikely to quit talking about it, but the threat of a new, damaging disclosure now seems remote.
