The Coming Insurrection?

I get a chuckle when so-called conservs start their BS line with the revolutionaries on the Left that will start a war over this election.

First, wanting change is not a revolutionary according to the modern definition.

Is this election a “civil war” election?

The US presidential election is now eight weeks away. The campaign between Trump and Biden is pitting an administration that is making an increasingly open appeal to violence and police state repression against a Democratic Party campaign that, as always, offers no genuine alternative to the drive toward authoritarianism and war.

The Trump administration is utilizing the election campaign in an attempt to build up a right-wing, fascistic movement on a ferociously antisocialist basis. Trump has followed up his praise of Kyle Rittenhouse, who murdered two protesters and injured a third in Kenosha, Wisconsin last month, with calls for vengeance directed against opponents of police violence.

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/09/09/pers-s09.html

Is this what makes the Right think there is a civil war coming?

a coalition of leading progressive groups gathered on Zoom to begin organizing for what they envision as the post-Election Day political apocalypse scenario.

Put together by the Fight Back Table—an initiative launched after the 2016 election to get a constellation of lefty organizations to work more closely together—the meeting dealt with the operational demands expected if the November election ends without a clear outcome or with a Joe Biden win that Donald Trump refuses to recognize.

Sources familiar with the discussions described them as serious with a modestly panicked undertone. A smaller FBT session last fall had talked about post-election planning, but those discussions were tabled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first time they were bringing the matter to the 50-plus organizations that make up the coalition. To formalize the effort, they gave it a name: the “Democracy Defense Nerve Center.”

If this worries the Right….and yet stuff like this means little to them…..

At a campaign rally and in a television interview, President Donald Trump reiterated his threats of police-military repression during and after the Nov. 3 election to maintain himself in power. He suggested again that he “deserved” a third term, for a total of 12 years in office, although that would violate the US Constitution.

His campaign speech Saturday night in Minden, Nevada, a small town outside of Reno, included a litany of insults and threats against his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, and a claim that he would defeat Biden in Nevada and nationally on Nov. 3.

“And then, after that, we’ll negotiate, right?” Trump said. “Because we’re probably—based on the way we were treated—we’re probably entitled to another four after that.” Trump has repeatedly suggested staying in office beyond the two-term limit set by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/09/14/elec-s14.html

Trump’s people are no better than him….his HHS Secretary has added fuel to the bullshit scenario….

The former Trump campaign employee appointed in April as spokesperson for the Health and Human Services department on Sunday issued warnings that had little to do with the coronavirus. In a Facebook Live video, Michael Caputo said “his mental health has definitely failed” and outlined multiple conspiracy theories, reports the New York Times, which says Caputo on Monday said threats have been directed at him and his family since he joined the administration. He claimed that a “resistance unit” of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists is conspiring against President Trump and predicted that Joe Biden will lose the election but fail to concede. “When Donald Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” he said. “The drills that you’ve seen are nothing.” He added: “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get.”

Caputo said he “didn’t like being alone in Washington” because the “shadows on the ceiling in my apartment, there alone, shadows are so long.” He told followers: “You understand that they’re going to have to kill me, and unfortunately, I think that’s where this is going,” On Saturday, Caputo slammed the “deep state” following reports that his team had been altering CDC reports on the pandemic. The Times notes that in his video Sunday, he sounded “anguished” about the virus death toll and warned his friends to leave Trump rallies if most people there aren’t wearing masks. “I don’t want to talk about death anymore,” he said. “You’re not waking up every morning and talking about dead Americans.”

To add fuel to the fire…….some see that the US is in the early stages of an insurgency……already.

David Kilcullen is one of the world’s leading authorities on insurgencies. For decades he has studied them. As an infantry soldier in the Australian army and an adviser to the U.S. Army, he’s fought against them. His latest scholarly work has focused on their role in urban conflicts.

So when Kilcullen says that America is in a state of “incipient insurgency,” it’s worth sitting up, taking notice, and trembling just a little.

The official definition of an insurgency is the “organized use of subversion and violence to seize, nullify, or challenge political control” of an area. An “incipient insurgency” might be happening when “inchoate actions by a range of groups”—followed by organizing, training, acquisition of resources (including arms), and the buildup of public support—lead to “increasingly frequent” incidents of violence, reflecting “improved organization and forethought.”

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/09/america-insurgency-chaos-trump-violence.html

One last question….what if Trump loses election in 2020 and refuses to leave the White House?

For months now, President Trump has carefully planted the seed that he might not leave the office of the presidency willingly if he loses.

Whether it’s tweeting that the election should be delayed as it “will be the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history” or that there will be widespread voter fraud because of the expected uptick in mail ballots due to the coronavirus, Trump seems intent on undermining the electoral process.

This, in turn, raises a rather thorny and unprecedented question: What happens if Trump won’t go? The answer is bleak. Experts tell me that the president actually has a lot of power at his discretion to contest the election, and some of the scenarios that could bring us to the edge of a crisis are actually very plausible.

Consider this one: It’s late on Election Day, and hundreds of thousands of votes in key battleground states still have to be counted due to the increased use of mail and absentee voting because of the pandemic. As a result, media outlets have largely avoided calling the race, but based on the votes that have been counted, Trump leads in enough states to reach at least 270 electoral votes, which would be enough to win the election if his election-night lead holds. Trump claims victory, but because Democrats were much more likely to vote by mail than Republicans, Joe Biden eventually pulls ahead because of the Democratic lean of the remaining votes — a phenomenon known as the “blue shift.”

What If Trump Loses And Won’t Leave?

A lot of info to digest…but all the scenarios are something to consider…..this election will go down in the history books.

Closing Thought–22Sep20

“War–What’s It Good for?”

My regulars here on IST know and understand that I am an antiwar voter and have been his 1970….and every election I am disappointed in the lack of an actual antiwar candidate or platform or anything that would say the we are against our endless wars.

And the election of 2020 is NO different…..neither Biden or Trump is what I would call antiwar…the rhetoric is not even there anymore.

It use to be that both major parties had an antiwar wing….but sadly those days are gone…gone….gone…..

Elect Joe Biden, former (Republican) Secretary of State Colin Powell said in his Democratic National Convention appearance Tuesday night, and he’ll “restore America’s leadership in the world.”

Powell’s comments were followed by a video touting Biden’s friendship with the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), another heavyweight GOP hawk. Meanwhile, there’s a pro-Biden super PAC of George W. Bush administration alumni, and Biden has racked up support from a who’s who of neoconservatives (Bill Kristol, Max Boot, David Frum, Jennifer Rubin), as commentators left and right have observed.

These alignments highlight an increasingly undeniable fact of American politics in 2020: The anti-war wing of both major parties is dead. Your presidential choice is between war and war. There’s no faction of Republicans or Democrats which combines real power with a durable, principled interest in turning American foreign policy away from global empire.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/anti-war-wing-both-parties-195532097.html

I am still an antiwar voter….I do not subscribe to the slogan that anybody but Trump….that sadly lacks any direction for this country.

Since I am still antiwar I will have to look elsewhere for a candidate…..and that means that I will be blamed for Biden’s loss….not to worry I am use to it.

Arrest The Lot Of Them!

It is time for Congress and SCOTUS to step out of the partisan shadows and think and act for the good of the nation.

Time for the officials in DC are held accountable and responsible for their actions.

There are lots of examples but the one that sticks in my throat…is the looting of 9/11 funds….

A health care program that serves 9/11 first responders is nearly $4 million short because the Trump administration shifted those dollars away to another program, the New York Daily News reports. In fact, the Treasury Dept. has quietly siphoned money from the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program—which covers paramedics, EMTs, and firefighters—for about four years now. “This was just disappearing,” says program director David Prezant. “This is the most amazing thing. This was disappearing—without any notification.” According to Prezant, the program lost between $500,000 and $600,000 a year from 2016 to 2019, then fell short roughly $1.5 million through late August of 2020.

Pezant says he complained for years to no avail, until GOP Rep. Pete King got involved. King, who called the shortfall “disgraceful,” wrote Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin two letters and never received a direct response. But MSN reports that a Treasury official told King’s office in August that nearly $2 million had been shifted to another program to offset costs. “I don’t even care what the details of this thing is. That fund has to be fully compensated, fully reimbursed,” said King. “I mean, this is absurd.” Sen. Chuck Schumer agreed, saying “this needs to stop forthwith.” Prezant says the program is still functioning with money fronted by the Fire Department—but the feds are supposed to reimburse those dollars under the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

This is not the worse violations of them trust the voters gave these people….but just the most recent.

All the lies and corruption that has finally come to the head of the government needs to be punished…… and punished hard!

If Democrats do hold their House majority and retake the Senate and the White House, pressure will be intense to avoid looking backward and focus solely on solving the problems in front of them. This is understandable: the wreckage the Trump administration would leave behind after just four short years is immense, the policy challenges dire. If successful in November (and if Trump doesn’t create irredeemable chaos in the transition), Biden and Congressional Democrats will have to deal with a raging pandemic, a collapsing small business and renter economy, a climate crisis and continuing unrest over racist police violence—as well as the myriad ongoing policy challenges related to healthcare, tuition, inequality, tech giant accountability and so much more. It’s easy to foresee a scenario where, coupled with pressure from Republicans and centrists, Democrats decide that the public is sick of even thinking about Trump and bygones are allowed to be bygones.

But that would be a huge mistake. If Trump and his enablers are allowed to get away with the misdeeds of the last four years unscathed, it may mean the end of the American experiment.

To Save Democracy, Democrats Must Hold Trump Officials Accountable

Arrest the lot of them.  Just once I would like to see a politician in the leadership rolls to be held accountable for their actions….especially when it comes to the deception of the population.

Arrested, tried and sent to PRISON!

Just a fanciful dream on my part.

Could The US Lose The Next Big War?

Yes I know that I am an antiwar blogger and am always going on about this fact or that about our many armed conflicts.

I have spent many years studying and analyzing war and the conflicts that the US has gotten itself into over the decades.

The question I asked is not my way of belittling the military as some unthinking morons will believe….I am just passing on a thought by a well respected US general, Gen. Dunford……

The United States could well lose the next big war — not because it lacks the right capabilities but because it has not done the hard intellectual work to know how to win. This is a central conclusion of the bipartisan National Defense Strategy Commission in its November 2018 report. It goes on to argue that defense planners understand neither the fundamental characteristics of regional conventional wars against adversaries capable of all-domain, transregional escalation nor how to shape the dynamics of such wars to safeguard U.S. interests.

As commissions come and go frequently inside the Washington beltway, their impact on public policy is typically short-lived. But this report struck a nerve — and rightly so. At a time when the risks of such regional wars are rising, the United States has lagged behind in the development of the needed new strategic thought, which has magnified risk. It is time for the U.S. defense community to put its intellectual house in order about modern major-power war and especially its strategic dimensions.

Lest anyone think that the criticism emanates from a single cranky commission, consider the judgment of Gen. Joseph Dunford, who as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2016 declared that “we’re already behind in adapting to the changing character of war today, in so many ways.” Or consider the views of the director of military sciences at the Royal United Services Institute in London, Peter Roberts, who wrote in 2017:

“Potential adversaries … have reconceptualized warfare and reimagined conflict without the boundaries the West imposes upon it. … A belief in Western conceptual or intellectual superiority remains deeply entrenched in the Western orthodoxy; such hubris has distinct dangers.”

On the Need for a Blue Theory of Victory

Too many generals and planners are still fighting World War 2….those days are gone and until we realize that the chances of a defeat is highly likely.

Just to fan the flames……

By 2030 there will be several armies strong enough…..other than the US…..

The focus of ground combat operations has shifted dramatically since the end of the Cold War. Relatively few operations now involve the defeat of a technologically and doctrinally similar force, leading to the conquest or liberation of territory. Preparation for these operations remains important, but ground combat branches also have a host of other priorities, some (including counter-insurgency and policing) harkening back to the origins of the modern military organization.

What will the balance of ground combat power look like in 2030, presumably after the Wars on Terror and the Wars of Russian Reconsolidation (more to come on this idea below) shake out?

Predictions are hard, especially about the future, but a few relatively simple questions can help illuminate our analysis. In particular, three questions motivate this study:

Those hated immigrants!

DoD cost cutting program…..

I am always going on and on about the money that is wasted by the Pentagon in the name of national security….but I never considered this as a way to do so…..

A Democratic lawmaker wants the Pentagon to buy American when it comes to its Military Working Dog program.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut included an amendment in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act that would require the U.S. Air Force, which oversees the Pentagon’s program, to conduct a business case study on what it would take to purchase dogs from U.S. breeders instead of European sources.

“I was surprised to learn from the Air Force that the vast majority of our working dogs are actually born and bred in Europe, which raises costs and puts us in competition with other countries,” Blumenthal said in a statement to Military.com on Wednesday. Bloomberg News was first to report the story.

“I wanted to do what I could to help establish a strong program to breed working dogs here at home, where we already have an expert training program. Our provision in this year’s NDAA takes the first step toward that goal by assessing what resources are necessary for the Department of Defense to meet increasing demands for military working dogs by supporting American breeders,” he said.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/09/18/us-military-working-dogs-should-be-american-born-senator-says.html

You know I have a better idea and it will save a lot more cash than worrying about the immigrant status of our canine soldiers.

Try ending all these goddamn useless wars that we have been fighting for two decades…..this would save trillions not some piddling amount in the millions.  But as usual when it comes to the Pentagon it is chump change and not real cost cutting.

Battling Histories

First it was the so-called liberals that started an educational program called the 1619 Project…..and as you would think I wrote about it…..https://gulfsouthfreepress.wordpress.com/2020/08/30/that-1619-project/

Not to be out done by the “liberals” the fascists have talked Donald the Orange into a more racially inspired educational program….it will be called the 1776 Commission.

President Trump says he’ll sign an executive order to “promote patriotic education” after bashing a New York Times project investigating how the the legacy of slavery impacts Black Americans as “toxic propaganda.” In what the AP sees as “a defense of white culture,” Trump on Thursday painted the 1619 Project—named after the year in which the first slaves arrived in Virginia—as “ideological poison that if not removed will dissolve the civic bonds that tie us together. It will destroy our country.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning project, which now offers curriculum for schools, teaches that “we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom. Nothing could be further from the truth,” the president said during the White House Conference on American History, per Axios.

He said America’s founding had led to the abolition of slavery and “the most fair, equal, and prosperous nation in human history.” Trump said the 1776 Commission that will be launched as a result of his executive order will encourage educators to teach “the miracle of American history,” per Politico. 1619 Project founder Nikole Hannah-Jones’ response: The attempts “to censor a work of American journalism” and dictate what children “should and should not learn should be deeply alarming to all Americans who value free speech.” Elsewhere, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos praised the 1776 Unites curriculum, launched this week by the group 1776 Unites as a direct response to the 1619 Project. The group says its curriculum offers “a more complete and inspiring story of the history of African-Americans” in the US.

As usual a service for those afflicted with an allergy to reading….a short video…..

During his presser he once again attacked teachers/professors as somehow agents of evil…..and I , as you would think, wrote about this type of thinking by the fascists in the GOP…..https://lobotero.com/2020/02/22/those-damn-liberal-professors/

A side note here….I will stop referring to them as ‘fascists’ when they refrain from labeling anyone that does not agree with them as a “socialist”…..until then my labels remain.

You know those “dog whistles” that Trump throws out for his supporters?  It is racism plain and simple!

President Donald Trump’s rhetoric is often referred to as “dog whistle politics.”

In politician speak, a dog whistle is language that conveys a particular meaning to a group of potential supporters. The targeted group hears the “whistle” because of its shared cultural reference, but others cannot.

In 2018, The Washington Post wrote that “perhaps no one has sent more dog whistles than President Trump.”

https://theconversation.com/trumps-appeals-to-white-anxiety-are-not-dog-whistles-theyre-racism-146070

Why does this rhetoric appeal to these people?

There’s no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

“Prejudice is extremely complex and multifaceted, making it critical that any factors contributing to bias are uncovered and understood,” he said.

It Is All So Much Bullsh*t!

It is election time and Trump has gone on record as promising to end our endless wars…..he likes to call himself the “ender of endless wars”.

Sorry sports fans but it is idle bullsh*t…just election rhetoric that holds on truth…..

I wrote a piece recently about all these promises…..https://lobotero.com/2020/09/14/ender-of-endless-wars/

Nice rhetoric too bad it is so much bullsh*t……and now why would I make such a claim?

Trump may be moving troops around and out of Iraq and Afghanistan….but those are not the only wars we have going (in case you were unaware)……what a bout Syria?

Glad you asked!

The US is sending additional forces into Syria after a series of incidents between US and Russian troops in the country, according to three unnamed Pentagon officials speaking to NBC News. The force will consist of six Bradley Fighting Vehicles and fewer than 100 soldiers, who will be operating in northeast Syria on a 90-day deployment.

The US-led anti-ISIS coalition Operation Inherent Resolve said that the Bradley Fighting Vehicles arrived in eastern Syria on Friday.

The unnamed officials told NBC that the additional soldiers and vehicles will serve as a “show of presence” to discourage Russia from entering the eastern security zone where US forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces operate.

US troops have had multiple encounters with the Syrian government and Russia inside Syria throughout the year. Some of the more serious confrontations occurred last month.

One incident took place on August 17th at a Syrian army checkpoint and resulted in US attack helicopters firing on the position, killing at least one Syrian soldier. A few days after the checkpoint incident, US and Russian military vehicles collided, injuring at least seven US soldiers.

US commanders blame the encounters on Moscow and Damascus, but while the US maintains its presence in the country against the will of the Syrian government, confrontations are bound to happen. These additional forces will only make similar incidents more likely.

(antiwar.com)

These wars are not ending…..just a reallocation of troops to give the appearance of a cessation of hostilities.

Dear Mr. Trump…use your magic pen and end these goddamn wars!

I Read, I Write, You Know

“lego ergo scribo”

P.S.

Citing increased complexity in the US operation in Syria, the Pentagon has announced they will send a small contingent of mechanized infantry, and several Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles back into NE Syria.

Officials are describing this as a “force protection” mission, and are linking it to an incident last month in which a US vehicle was side-swiped by a Russian vehicle. The US forces in Syria are confined to a small area, and officially they are there as part of a mission to take Syria’s oil.

There are currently an estimated 500 US troops in Syria, and this deployment will see an estimated 100 more troops sent to the country. Though media reports are calling this a show of force, it’s not clear that an extra 100 troops are going to mean that much in the grand scheme of things.

These troops will be moving in through Kuwait. Though the US presence in Syria is fairly small, even 100 additional troops could be quite expensive, and make this war for oil even less economical for the Trump Administration.

A Few Things To Bitch About

I am an old fart so according to popular belief I must be cranky and bitch about stuff all the time.

If you ask Sue I am sure that she would agree.

There are always something to bitch about no matter who you are…..today I have picked a couple of items to vent my anger upon…..

Cats! I realize that some of my readers are cat people but this is more about their owners than their feline friends.

When I walk my MoMo I am obliged to carry crap bags so that I can clean up her mess…..well yesterday I stepped in a bunch of cat crap not making me happy….plus my canine friend must be on a leash but not the cats in the neighborhood…..they roam the neighborhood starting fights and crapping wherever they want.  If MoMo gets out and wanders the neighborhood she gets picked up and I get fined.  Racism!  I tell you it’s racism!

Self-adsorbed dickwads that think that the sidewalks belong to them and stack their crap and trash and block the walkway or they park their cars so no one can walk on the sidewalks.

Television! Nowadays there are two types of TV….game shows and fake reality……and you wonder why people seem more ignorant than they were in the past…..these two types of “entertainment” lower your IQ several points every time you watch.

Finally…..those phone calls begging for money for state troopers, police and firemen.

First if the city/state are not caring for their employees then the problem is the government…..second….what idiot thought that in time of a pandemic and joblessness was a good time to beg cash over the phone?

I bitch about the price of fresh veggies every time I go to the store…if you hate it as well then I have a story for you…..economics come to play….scarcity drives price up but surplus does not drive the prices down.  Remember when they use to use the price of gas as a reason to up their prices and it also never came down when the price of gas declined.

When I go to a local park and give MoMo a new territory to explore I am always pissed to see the crap people leave behind….then I read a story about a great idea from Thailand….

Some visitors to Thailand’s beautiful Khao Yai National Park will be receiving a memento of their trip—all the trash they left behind. In a series of Facebook posts, Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa slammed campers who left garbage strewn around a campsite over the weekend and said officials should take it to the post office and send it back to them, the Bangkok Post reports. He added a photo of a package of trash that was being returned to the tourists. “You forgot these things at Khao Yai National Park,” says a note with the package.

Authorities say the trash is a hazard for the park’s wildlife, which includes numerous endangered species and some of the country’s only remaining herds of wild elephants. Visitors to the 770-square-mile park near Bangkok are required to register with their names and addresses, which has made it easy for authorities to track litterbugs down, the BBC reports. Park officials have also lodged a complaint with police, meaning the offenders could face a fine of up to $16,000 and a possible prison sentence for littering in a national park.

A DAMN fine idea!

I feel better already!

That is my meager offering for this Sunday….cooler weather has me and Sue enjoying the garden before the heat returns.

An extensive list indeed…..but is there a short list?  (Of course there is for Donald cannot concentrate long enough to read that long list)

The line to succeed the late Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court likely starts with these federal appeals court judges:
