The best performance by a blogger in support of world affairs…AWARD

I would like to thank all those readers that have made winning this award possible….

Are you confused?

Well if the president can make up an award so can I……it seems that Don the Orange is claiming he won the coveted “Bay of Pigs Award”….

President Trump says he won something called the Bay of Pigs Award—which, according to multiple media outlets, does not actually exist. The comment came in a Trump tweet attacking rival Joe Biden Sunday: “Sleepy Joe Biden has spent 47 years in politics being terrible to Hispanics. Now he is relying on Castro lover Bernie Sanders to help him out. That won’t work! Remember, Miami Cubans gave me the highly honored Bay of Pigs Award for all I have done for our great Cuban Population!” Needless to say, many were having fun with the comment on Twitter. As for what Trump meant, his campaign is claiming it’s the “hand-painted Brigade 2506 shield” he received in 2016.

As the Guardian reports, Trump visited the Bay of Pigs museum in Miami’s Little Havana in October of that year; survivors of Brigade 2506, the unit that carried out the invasion, meet at the museum and presented him with the shield. He also received the Bay of Pigs Veterans Association endorsement, which many on Twitter were pointing out he had apparently confused with an award. The AP reports that endorsement was “the first ever from the group of Florida-based veterans who fought in the United States’ failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban government in the 1961 invasion.” The Guardian notes Trump has at other times claimed to have received awards that don’t actually exist, including his claim that Michigan once named him Man of the Year.

Not to be concerned….a immigrant hating Norwegian has enter Trump’s name in the Nobel race…..

President Trump has a big fan in Norway, and now the possibility of a Nobel Peace Prize, thanks to his somewhat-newfound friend. Fox News reports that Norwegian Parliament member Christian Tybring-Gjedde has nominated Trump for the honor based on his role in establishing relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, announced last month. “This agreement could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity,” Tybring-Gjedde, who also nominated Trump in 2018, said in his letter to the Nobel Committee. Tybring-Gjedde also cited Trump’s efforts on the Korean Peninsula and in the Kashmir border dispute. The Daily Beast and Independent point out that any member of a national government or assembly, or even a university professor, can throw someone’s name in the ring, and that hundreds of people are nominated each year.

The outlet also notes that Tybring-Gjedde is one of the Scandinavian nation’s “most well-known anti-immigration cranks,” who’s made multiple eyebrow-raising statements on the topic. Tybring-Gjedde, however, insists his nomination of the US president shouldn’t be downplayed. “I’m not a big Trump supporter,” he tells Fox. “The committee should look at the facts and judge him on the facts—not on the way he behaves sometimes. The people who have received the Peace Prize in recent years have done much less than Donald Trump. For example, Barack Obama did nothing.” Obama received the 2009 Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” especially for his “vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.” Per Sky News, a signing ceremony for the Israel-UAE deal will take place on Sept. 15.

Can I just say win or lose it is just an honor to be nominated…..

On a side note–Looks like yet another storm, Sally, is heading to my region and if so then I may without the internet for awhile…..not to worry I will return as soon as possible….

My last thought of the day…..

The Dakota Uprising

This is for my American Civil War buffs….there were many battles that do not make the history books and this is just such a conflict…

The year is 1862 and the place is Minnesota.

Fort Snelling played a central role in the war and its aftermath. In early August 1862, recruitment of the Sixth through Eleventh Infantry regiments meant for service in the Civil War had commenced. When news of Dakota attacks reached St. Paul, Governor Ramsey appointed Henry Sibley a colonel in the state’s military forces and commander of the army that would march against the Dakota. Sibley led four hastily armed companies of the Sixth Infantry Regiment from Fort Snelling to St. Peter. Over the next few days, a trickle of supplies and detachments from the other partially recruited infantry regiments and militia units left Fort Snelling to join Sibley.

The state’s military forces came under federal control on September 16, when Major General John Pope assumed command of the newly created Military Department of the Northwest. Sibley, just appointed a brigadier general of US Army volunteers, directed the US forces in the decisive Battle of Wood Lake on September 23, defeating the Dakota. Many of the Dakota combatants moved westward into Dakota Territory, while others went north to Canada, but many of the men who had fought stayed with their families, who could not move swiftly enough to escape. Numerous Dakota who had not participated in the war, as well as some who had, met Sibley’s army at a place that came to be called Camp Release. When he arrived, Sibley took the Dakota into the custody of the US military.

What Has Happened To The GOP?

I have been debating people about the GOP for decades….there were very few policies and issues of the party that I agreed with….but that was before the election of Trump and the sycophants in the GOP.

I asked the question several times in the past…..

https://lobotero.com/2018/11/06/where-has-the-gop-gone/

https://lobotero.com/2019/12/16/what-is-wrong-with-the-gop/

What happened to fiscal policy?

What happened to family values?

What has happened to the GOP?

I will admit that there have been what I call “liberal Republicans” that I could agree with on principle but maybe not on substance…..but then 2010 arrived and those member of the GOP have been driven out by the movements like the Tea Party.

Even the uber conserv Joe Scarborough asks the same question as I…..

“Perhaps Lindsey O. Graham was right when he predicted that Trump would destroy the Republican Party,” Scarborough wrote. “The question that remains is why the South Carolina senator and so many of his peers stay silent while the honor of our military leaders is under attack by America’s president. One wonders what the hard-hat rioters would have thought about that.”

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/09/trump-is-undermining-the-gops-claim-to-patriotism-and-republicans-dont-seem-to-care-joe-scarborough/

And then the election of Trump and all true conservs have found out that they are not the GOP but rather a tolerated group to gain power and influence.

The Mouth or Donald the Orange…seems to be losing his grip….his pressers are weirder and weirder……so what is wrong with Trump?

His transmission seems to be slipping, at least one of his cylinders is misfiring, the brakes are not grabbing and the stability of the “very stable genius” appears to be wobbling. Why? Did he really have “mini-strokes” in November?

Or are the reasons for his fantasies simply that he’s behind in the polls against Joe Biden and that neither his overdone baloney convention nor his desperation law-and-order campaign are getting much traction? Or all of the above?

What raises concerns about Trump’s state of mind two months before the election are his recent embrace of some wild conspiracy theories, his talk of “dark shadows” controlling Biden, his saying people were out to get him in a “coup,” his charging that “thugs” in “dark uniforms” were aboard a plane departing Washington, and his telling people to vote twice as a check on whether mail-in voting works.

What’s the Matter with Trump?

I judge a party by its platform, a statement of principles, and in 2020 the GOP has NO platform…..like the GOP platform of 1956…….

1956 REPUBLICAN PLATFORM 1 Provide Federal Assistance to Low-Income Communities 2 Protect Social Security 3 Provide Asylum for Refugees 4 Extend Minimum Wage 5 Improve Unemployment Benefit System So It Covers More

So I ask again….what has happened to the GOP?

“The Republican National Committee (RNC) enthusiastically supports President Trump and continues to reject the policy positions of the Obama-Biden Administration, as well as those espoused by the Democratic National Committee today … [and that] the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda.”

A Party platform defines what a party stands for so, with no new party platform in 2020 the Republicans are admitting they have no new ideas or plans. With a worldwide pandemic in progress one would think they might have some official policy objectives, other than yielding to whatever their sitting president may feel are appropriate actions, like suggesting internal use of disinfectants, slowing down the rates of COVID testing, or assuming it will just “go away”.

The president has a long history of racist and religious bigotry that is now part of his America First Agenda. Since, as they have stated, the RNC enthusiastically supports him, they are willing to capitulate to his whims, his need for attention, adoration and his demand for total loyalty both from the party and his administration.

https://www.commondreams.org/views/2020/09/08/party-formerly-known-republican

I ask again….what happened to the GOP?

I feel it all began to deteriorate with Reagan and culminated with the election of Trump…..and the destruction of the GOP is near complete.

The real question should be….can the GOP be saved from itself?

Ender Of Endless Wars

That is what Trump billed himself as in the 2016 election…..and yet most…scratch that…ALL are still raging and Americans are still dying.

We get lots of lip service and even a bit of shuffling troops around so that it can be said that the president is keeping his campaign promise of 4 years ago.

Let’s start with Afghanistan.

The US has brought some troops out of the country and Trump’s new ambassador has lots to say about the troops….

In a move the could have major implications for the longest running war in US history, the Trump administration is planning to nominate Will Ruger to be the next ambassador to Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. Ruger, an anti-interventionist conservative, has long championed an immediate withdrawal of American troops from that country.

Ruger’s planned nomination, which a source familiar with the matter confirmed to Mother Jones, speaks to President Trump’s desire to remove troops from Afghanistan as quickly as possible. Though the United States signed a much-criticized peace deal with the Taliban in February, the administration has been hazy about when to expect a full withdrawal of troops. Trump reportedly wants troops home before Election Day, but the Pentagon has advocated for a much “slower withdrawal schedule,” the New York Times reported in May.

Trump’s Pick for Afghanistan Ambassador Wants to Withdraw US Troops Immediately

On the surface sounds like a good deal…but is it?  Or is it just talk?

Next is our second longest war….Iraq.

There has been some talk about removing our troops from Iraq and so far it has been just that…TALK.

The U.S. will be reducing the number of troops it has stationed in Iraq by about a third, reports The Wall Street Journal, leaving behind roughly 3,500 men and women. This news comes after a long series of brags at the Republican National Convention that President Donald Trump is succeeding in ending America’s foreign wars.

“Unlike previous administrations, I have kept America out of new wars, and our troops are coming home,” said Trump in his acceptance speech last night, promising that in a second term he would “strike down terrorists who threaten our people and keep America out of endless and costly foreign wars.”

Trump, Self-Proclaimed Ender of Endless Wars, Is Reducing the U.S. Troop Presence in Iraq to Where It Was in 2015

Let us not forget our footprint in Syria.

We went for dual reasons….eliminate ISIS’ progress and to rid the country of Assad,  WE did a fair job on the first but failed miserably on the second.

Why are there still thousands of American troops in Syria? The government offers up an official counter-terrorism justification for maintaining an illegal military presence in the country, and the president will sometimes talk about “keeping the oil” there, but the real answer is that no one with any authority or influence in Washington wants to bring them home. The usual mix of inertia, cowardice, and ideology that defines so many of our foreign policy debates also creates perverse incentives for politicians in both parties to defend an illegal, unauthorized mission that has nothing to do with American security.

U.S. troops are in harm’s way in Syria, and they are occasionally engaged in hostilities with pro-regime forces. Four American soldiers were injured in a collision last Wednesday between their armored vehicle and a Russian one. That was just the latest in a string of clashes between U.S. forces and Syrian and Russian government forces that has been going on for months. Last month, a group of American troops came under fire from Syrian government forces. The Syrians claim that a U.S. helicopter had attacked a Syrian government outpost and killed one of their soldiers. There was a bigger clash in February of this year that also resulted in at least one Syrian fatality. These have all been minor incidents, but they show how potentially dangerous it is to keep these troops there.

Get Out of Syria

The noise about action to be taken by the US against Iran is still there in the printed word and the spoken as well.

And finally there is the turmoil in Lebanon, a country that the US has placed troops on two occasions, the country is sliding into a civil yet again….and the US is just waiting for the invite…..

A new flashpoint of the wider tension, however, is in Lebanon. Russia, which has an expensive alliance with Iran in Syria, has declined to take on the same level of involvement in Lebanon. Iranian allies in Beirut – namely, Hezbollah – have therefore eyed eyeing Chinese funds and expertise to restore the city and its port after this month’s devastating ammonium nitrate explosion demolished them. The speediness and lack of conditionality that comes with Chinese support would provide a shortcut for Hezbollah to pre-empt any other powers stepping in as the city’s saviour and to bring its dominance of Lebanese politics to the level of a monopoly.
