Take The Punishment And Smile

WE have had about 2 weeks of a debate on “fake news”….even here on IST there has been a bit of a conversation….and as usual there will remain two sides to this debate…..those that see the “fake news” and those that will not…..

The Trump camp is doing nothing to clarify this debate……and they have even admitted that they use the term “fake news” to punish those that criticize the president……

Deputy Assistant to President Trump, Sebastian Gorka, said that the White House is going to continue calling the media fake news until the press stops being critical of Trump.

According to CNN, Gorka said, “There is a monumental desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters, the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the second week of his term. That’s how unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong that attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to continue to say, ‘fake news.’ I’m sorry, Michael. That’s the reality.”

Any story that criticizes Trump, or that the President does not like is going to be labeled “fake news” by the White House. It seems that the only real news that the White House will accept is stories that praise Trump.

The real point of the Trump White House’s adoption of the fake news term as a weapon is the delegitimation of the free press. The White House is attempting to delegitimize facts and information that they don’t like by labeling them as not real. If President Trump and his team are able to successfully confuse the American people, it will be more difficult to hold them accountable for their actions.

Personally I think it is a bit juvenile….what can you expect from a reality star…..but now we know that there use of “fake news” is just a tactic……

Really?  Journalism is truly dead!

NO one is allowed to be critical?  I believe a history student, even a dumb one, can point to a time when this was used extensively…..and that did not turn out well.

Side note:  After all the grief the Right gave Obama for his golf games and Trump played just over the weekend and nothing nothing was said….I wonder why?  (that was rhetorical and sarcastic)

  1. All this “fake news” finger pointing from the WH to the press is going to backfire, and harshly. It’s going to force people to find their news from sources that aren’t considered “mainstream”; 200 million blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc. The WH can’t control all of it and the harder they try, the more obvious it will become. The fact that the WH thinks it can control the media by attacking, when most news is real-time, makes it clear to me that they have no idea the tidal wave of dissent that is back-building in their direction.

  2. No one is allowed to be critical without paying a price. Sen. Warren was stifled by the Reps. at the Sessions debate for quoting the words of Coretta King spoken years ago regarding the racists actions of Sessions, another example; during a recent meeting of Trumps thugs he was advised of criticism for an action taken by him, he demanded to know the generals name, laughingly stating ” we will ruin his career”.

    1. I read about that earlier…but it goes to illustrate just what type of person we elected….but the question is …did we learn anything? chuq

  3. I love what my fave podcaster, Dan Carlin, says. It’s true, now more than ever, that journalism and power aren’t supposed to be buddy-buddy. Journalists are SUPPOSED to be the opposition. The ass-kissing that’s been going on the past decade and change is now being (forced?) to swing back to an adversarial role. Now, they’re not supposed to make crap up, but definitely supposed to hold people accountable. That’s the point of the press and journalists. You’ve already got a couple of spin doctors on your staff, Dump (or maybe spin interns, because they suck), the media must do their own thing.

      1. I think “chattyintrovert” has made a very good point. Perhaps MSM may yet redeem itself through this adversarial status. Of course that will depend a great deal on the owners of MSM and whether they order their docile “reporters” and talking heads to turn around and support Trump. Time must tell.

      2. For access they might do just that….the way Donny is acting they may have to if they want some interviews and such….chuq

  4. How do you dress up a president who has no clothes, and worse, none will stay on? You ‘fake news’ it! I wonder if the White House is issuing collectible (no, I didn’t write “contemptible”) Valentine’s day cards of little naked Donald Trump Cupids? I bet they’d make a small fortune among the uneducated deplorables… I can see those cards showing up at flea markets and garage sales 50 years down the road.

  5. Over there, do they mention his hair? The one thing that gets mentioned more than anything here is his hair. The feeling is that someone with such a blatantly weird hairstyle can never expect to be taken seriously. It’s not just Trump. Boris Johnson gets it too, for the same reason.
    Regards, Pete.
