The Bank of England introduced a five-pound note Thursday that marks the beginning of the end of a three-century run for paper money in the UK, reports the Guardian. This particular note is made of a thin plastic and designed to last more than twice as long as its paper counterpart. It features the queen on the front and Winston Churchill on the back, and it goes into circulation in September. The current five-pound paper note will remain in use for another year. Next up comes up a 10-pound plastic note featuring Jane Austen in 2017 and a 20-pound note featuring painter JMW Turner by 2020.
The unveiling comes ahead of Britain’s crucial vote on whether to exit the European Union, and Bloomberg notes that both sides of the debate have claimed none other than Churchill to be in their camp. Asked on Thursday about how Churchill might view the question, Bank of England Gov. Mark Carney opted to play it safe. “It’s not for me to make any inference about that,” he said.
Libertarians should be watching this….I mean they are against paper money….will they embrace this experiment?
How long before this makes it to the shores of the colonies?
It’s worth noting that the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, is actually a Canuck who used to be the Governor of the Bank of Canada when it introduced plastic money….Not only is it partially see through (great metaphor) but has also been known to melt in cars on hot days (another metaphor) and get rejected by vending machines (another metaphor).

Well I hate the idea basically on the grounds that i hate change. I wish WE were not reissuing the $20 in our country and removing Jackson. I wish we would issue a $15 bill with women on it…completely new bills honoring a woman. Never thought of melting when i read you piece but it seems to me if it is strong enough NOT to melt in a car in SOCAL, then it is strong enough to pollute the ocean. What I care about, at this precise moment is to bring back the guillotine with a blunt rusty blade….and line up All the ‘head’s’ of the EU. and that be regardless of gender!….
I would watch while I knitted…..the heads roll….

Spoke with an Algerian yesterday…Majid…apparently the French police have gone to Algeria to pick up some tips on ‘terrorism’ …grin… Ah, how the wheels turn……then spoke of the in/out ref…wot a pleasure to speak to someone who sees the bigger picture! He looked at me and said…’we have no ‘leaders’ in the the U.K Spineless all of them! true…he also said that the Moroccan king was the direct blood line to the Wahabi..I did not know that..you can imagine wot he thinks of them…and the French!..we spoke about the conditions of the Western Sahara also..
Meanwhile back in Romania a Romanian friend/ lass/ spoke of the nepotism/ Romanian government and then said,horrified ….’We have Now even got a German president!!!….their new president…Klaus Werner Iohannis representing the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania.( a minority group). He is also the first president since the Romanian Revolution with no past ties to Communism….the Unions accuse him of demagogy…oh dear…I remember a few years back sitting in the Brit Embassy in Bucharest speaking to a American/Christian missionary ‘sort’ she was bemoaning the fact that Romania was about to join the EU…all she saw was rise in prices and increased poverty…she was right! The Romanian people are now speaking ‘fondly’ of the good old days….Nicolae Ceausescu…well,he woz a ‘real’ Romanian! not a bleedin german grin He would not have let the USA establish a base there,now would he? Yeah,go to a poor country and bribe them….standard policy.

Wow! Pennywoodfall had a lot to say. The EU was a good idea (?) in the beginning, but it may fall on its face. The only union to survive is ours – even with all its problems. I thought about all the plastic and the environment while reading about the plastic money, too. Paper, thought more fragile, might wind up lasting longer than plastic!

The genius ‘Painter of Light’ JMW Turner is a brilliant choice, and as I informed the Bank of England, I have links to the artist and I also have an ancestor who is the son of a draftsman called Sir Percivall Pott, Queen Victoria’s surgeon who lived at the site of the Bank of England at Threadneedle Street. Our relative, Miss Constance Pott, the pioneering graphic designer and etcher produced a picture titled New Bank of England.
