Sorry Chuq. I have already had my ten free reads from the NY Times this month so can’t pick up this article with subscribing and I ain’t gonna do that.
But on a very basic level, we can all live on a minimum wage or less. The real question is to what degree of doing without do we have to endure to live a reasonably normal life on a certain income level? Obviously our quality of life will improve proportionate to a wage increase but are we still unable to save for things like a college education for our kids and our own retirement? $10.10 an hour won’t achieve that for a family of four but it will keep them off of the streets and putting more money into the economy where in time further raises will ensue and theoretically start to allow them to join or rejoin a thriving middle class
If you take my state’s min of $7.25 and factor in housing, food and transportation….you will be in the hole quickly……the average apartment in my area goes for 500 a month add in grub and a single person will be left with not much for clothing and other essentials……and lets not forget taxes and FICA…..

Anywhere in the US really. Are the kinds of jobs that pay minimum wage the kind that are intended to be long term primary income?
I was asking if youve read the stats of what the demographics of the people who make minimum wage are, aside from the fact that only 1.6% of the workforce actually makes the minimum.
In other words even those who are the sole wage earner of the home, they make up a very small percent of those eho make the minimum.
I worry about my state and the percentage of people working for minimum is considerably higher than the country, it would seem……

Not entirely true John. Your comments in one previous post were insulting in your usual in-your-face style back then so I eliminated them from that post. Upon reflection however I re-entered them and challenged you to defend them. I never heard back from you. The ban has been lifted for some time now John so if you want to comment in a civil manner on my blog please feel free. But don’t disparage me on other blogs with comments that are short of the facts.

This figure seems to be in dispute with what the Bureau of Labor Statistics is saying Mr Baron,
Among those paid by the hour, 1.7 million earned exactly the prevailing Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. About 2.2 million had wages below the minimum.2 Together, these 3.8 million workers with wages at or below the Federal minimum made up 5.2 percent of all hourly-paid workers. SOURCE

Perhaps, so why the big hue and cry about raising the minimum wage to a decent livable one?
Personally, I support an increase in minimum wage. John and I disagree on the issue so some posts on Sifting Reality you’ll see in favor of it (written by me) and those opposed to it (written by John). Just so you know and don’t persuse the blog thinking John has a personality disorder! 🙂
I can attest to the fact that Lobotero doesn’t ban people very often. I’ve disagreed with him constantly over a period of, what, 3 years now and he’s never banned me.
Larry will ban/delete comments, but most of the time that’s because the comments are rude – as mine often were. 😀 He tolerates dissent, however.
