Closing Thought–15Jan18

Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther king, Jr…..his speeches lead to the Civil Rights Movement that to the freedoms we all have finally given to black people….

This is a forgotten speech of MLK from 1964…….

In a Democracy Now! and Pacifica Radio Archives exclusive, we air a newly discovered recording of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On December 7, 1964, days before he received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, King gave a major address in London on segregation, the fight for civil rights and his support for Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. The speech was recorded by Saul Bernstein, who was working as the European correspondent for Pacifica Radio. Bernstein’s recording was recently discovered by Brian DeShazor, director of the Pacifica Radio Archives.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X met only once. On March 26, 1964, the two black leaders were on Capitol Hill, attending Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

King was stepping out of a news conference, when Malcolm X, dressed in an elegant black overcoat and wearing his signature horn-rimmed glasses, greeted him.

Freedom Of The Press

We Americans pride ourselves on our freedoms…..freedom of religions and the biggie freedom of the press.

But for over a year now we Americans have been having this tug of war with our press freedom….some say “fake news” is everywhere….I disagree…..yep there is some form of fake news but is it widespread….nope only in the small minds of certain people.

President Donald Trump, who recently said he would announce the “MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR,” has been awarded the title of the world’s most oppressive leader toward press freedom by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Trump claimed the journalism organization’s top prize for “overall achievement in undermining global press freedom,” and joins four other leaders, including strongmen like Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who “have gone above and beyond to silence critical voices and weaken democracy,” the Committee to Protect Journalists said Monday.

The group said its awards were for “recognizing world leaders who have gone out of their way to attack the press and undermine the norms that support freedom of the media.” Though CPJ determined that countries like Russia and China hold the tightest grip on their national media, it declared Trump the winner for “overall achievement.”

I have a pretty good idea on who will win the Trump fake news award…..fair is fair….tit for tat….all those cliches.

Could the “award” be a violation of ethics?

Every awards show has its critics, but President Donald Trump’s much ballyhooed “Fake News Awards” has drawn attention from a group beyond the usual peanut gallery: ethics experts who say the event could run afoul of White House rules and, depending on what exactly the president says during the proceedings, the First Amendment.

The White House has not yet said what form the awards presentation, scheduled by Trump for Wednesday, may take. But Norman Eisen, the former special counsel for ethics for President Barack Obama, and Walter Shaub, the former head of the Office of Government Ethics, have both tweeted that if White House staff members were involved, they would be in violation of the executive branch’s Standards of Ethical Conduct, which ban employees from using their office for “the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise.”

From Iran With Love

Recently US ambassador Nikki Haley had a meet and greet in some warehouse where she presented a bunch of “evidence” that Iran is providing missiles to the Yemeni rebels, the Houthis, that are being used against the Saudis.

While the US has long accused Iran of having directly and heavily armed Yemen’s Houthi movement, and Iran has denied any such thing, concrete proof has remained elusive. This continues to be the case, though a new UN report is likely to continue to fuel allegations.

The UN panel says they’ve found that Iran is in violation of the Yemen arms embargo, and that there is evidence that some of the missiles the Houthis have contain components that originated in Iran after the embargo was in place.

(antiwar.com)

She had all this “evidence” that she presented to the UN and now the kicker…..

…….there’s no evidence the Iranian government actually provided any of this, and rather the panel is simply saying that the Iranian government’s violation was failing to prevent such transfers.

That part of the rhetoric will not make it into the conversation….all the US and Saudis will do is present this as “Iran sent missiles to the Houthis”….in other words they will lie to gain the upper hand with Iran.

There is so much more……

Saudis have had a couple planes shot down by those “Iranian missiles”…..then there is another wrinkle in the lies spread by Haley and her Saudi proxies……

Houthi rebels announced they had built a new locally designed missile to fight against the Saudi-led alliance. And now the rebels are threatening to block the Red Sea shipping lane if the coalition keeps pushing towards the western port city of Hudaida – which the Houthis control.

The Houthi are building their own missiles…..if true then they do not need ones supposedly built in Iran…

But this story will not be part of the conversation for it craps on the lies the US is spreading about Iran.

Time for there to be some truth being told about this conflict….The UN has called Yemen the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with eight million people on the brink of famine. Thousands of others are suffering from malnutrition and disease, including cholera.  The fighting has killed at least 10,000 people and displaced millions more.

That is the only truth that is important.

Afghanistan: The Rest Of The Story

Do I need to point out that  Afghanistan is the US longest war?  I didn’t think so.

Every president since Bush2 has pretended that there is some sort of grand plan for the conflict in Afghanistan…..it has been a lie since 2001….some say that the key to Afghanistan is through Pakistan….

As 2018 begins, Pakistan has not stopped its support of terrorists and insurgents in Afghanistan, and elsewhere, in any fundamental ways.

America and its Coalition partners have now been at war in Afghanistan for six years longer than the Soviets were at war in Afghanistan.

There are a number of reasons why the war in Afghanistan is a protracted stalemate, but a huge one lies in the delusion that portrayed Pakistan as a friend and, until now, impaired clear-eyed thinking about a strategy for Pakistan.

The reason for the stalemate is the support and sanctuary that the Pakistani security establishment has continued to provide to the enemies of the Afghans, Americans and the Coalition partners.

https://www.theglobalist.com/united-states-afghanistan-war-pakistan-taliban/

Pakistan is the hideout for many within the Taleban and has been since the early days of America’s involvement…..the Taleban has been a thorn in the US collective butt….but what is most amazing is that the US needs the Taleban intact to justify its time in Afghanistan…..

I read an interview with some people from Afghanistan about the necessity of the Taleban for the US and its proxies…..

“Whoever sits in the White House will continue to serve the 1% and spread wars across the world, to maintain the US hegemony. Many corporations, arms manufacturers and corporate-employed mercenaries, benefit from the war itself, or from extravagant reconstruction opportunities the war destruction creates. The increase in the number of US troops is not to secure the country or annihilate the US creations, the Taliban and ISIS, but rather a show of US power to rivals, Russia, China and Iran.

Despite all their differences, the US and Iran’s aim in Afghanistan converge on one point: the promotion of fundamentalist thought, and continued support for the most reactionary, dark-minded and criminal fundamentalist elements. While the US killed hundreds of Afghan revolutionaries and freedom-fighters through its fundamentalist mercenaries in the 1980s and 90s, it used these tactics to prevent the rise of nationalist, freedom-fighting and independent figures and forces that would resist its occupation and bullying,”

The US will continue to fight and die in Afghanistan as long as it stays profitable…..and the president and his minions will continue to lie as long as the M-IC needs then to do so.
