“Exit” Stage Right

The votes are in and It is official…..the UK will be leaving the EU……

The BBC, among others, has called it: The UK has voted to leave the European Union, sending shock waves through the EU and world economies. With almost all results in, the vote stands at 52% for Leave and 48% for Remain, the Guardian reports. Signaling discord ahead for the UK, different regions voted differently, with Remain winning easily in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and London, and Leave sweeping much of England and Wales. “Let June 23 go down in history as our independence day,” jubilant UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage told reporters. The British pound, meanwhile, tumbled to its lowest level against the dollar in more than 30 years.

Britain is the first nation ever to vote to leave the EU, which will now shrink from 28 nations to 27. As the rest of the Europe woke up to the news, anti-immigration parties in countries including the Netherlands called for their own countries to hold votes on leaving the bloc, while a senior German lawmaker warned that Britain will receive “no special treatment” and exit negotiations must be concluded within two years, reports the Telegraph, which calls the Brexit vote the biggest crisis in EU history. In Scotland, meanwhile, Scottish National Party leaders are already calling for a second referendum on leaving the UK.

The other big news is that the PM of Britain, Cameron, will be leaving in October to make way for new leadership….

What now for the EU?

Will this start a sprint of countries in search of the “exit” door?  What about Greece?

How will this effect the rest of the world?  Thanx to globalization we are all tied to each other in some way or another…….

      Well, all but 28% of them! Apparently, there was an all day marathon of Some Mother’s Do Have ‘Em on Channel 4 that kept them away from the voting booth. Five Euros says more people voted for Pop Idol contestants.

      And even if every single Limey voted, 51.9% support for Leave is hardly an overwhelming mandate. Especially when what you’re “Leaving to” was pretty much left up to everyone’s imagination. The promise of unicorns delivering spit-roasted baby pandas on their horns, smothered in Béarnaise sauce, is what got me to vote “Leave”. Although, Béarnaise sauce will probably be banned for being “too Euro”, now.

      2. Well, I’ve been reading up on it lately. And last night, I couldn’t sleep, so I watched the train wreck on the BBC.

        Yikes! This referendum was like watching a game of Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey where everyone is blindfolded…high on LSD….and using a real donkey.

        Oh, with the possible exception of the small cabal that will lead a coup and turn Britain into what it wants (a TPP supporting, 1% fellating, Thatcher-ite purge akin to Mao’s Cultural Revolution)

  8. 51.9% vs 48.1%? Boy, that’s NOT exactly an overwhelming mandate to end a major international commitment that affects every element of society that’s been in effect since the mid-70’s! Especially when you consider 28% didn’t bother to vote! What’s the matter? Did they have re-runs of Britain’s Next Top Model to watch again???

    Aside from a piddling 2% swing vote on the most important question in Britain since 1939’s “Poland, is it worth it?”….I have a few initial “outsider’s perspectives” on this lukewarm result I am personally lukewarm about.

    1) Britain is run by a bunch of feckless wankers! There were NO winners last night, only losers. Cameron, the new Labour leader, Boris Karloff & everyone else looked as self-motivated as they were ineffective & uninspiring…even to their own supporters.

    In an act of “self-abuse”, Cameron actually held a referendum he was against! He undercut his position by entering into a suspicious “renegotiation” to take Britain slightly further out of the EU orbit. He then was so unconvincing in his support for the EU, he could barely convince himself to Remain! The Labour guy appeared to deliberately under-campaign to score political points by letting Cameron hang himself. Corbyn gave the EU a “7.5 out of 10”? Well, even I could tell he gave a 0.5 of effort to save the EU! Only the Liberal Democrat wanker seemed angry about losing, but he mostly used it to attack the lacklustre Labour effort. I wonder if ANY of them will make it to the end of the year.

    2) Making Britannica “Great” Again Actually, there was ONE winner, UKIP. I saw all 3 press conferences this Nigel Garage tosser gave last night. He declared victory for “my kind of Britain” and he hopes this will trigger the collapse of the entire EU and the rise of “my kind of people” all across Europe.

    If I recall, he then put on a red & black armband and called for the Chunnel to be dug up & used to help build a wall around Britain. He promised to forbid entry into Britain of all non-pasty-white people, that Muslims will be sent to “holiday camps” and that Britain will join the TPP & as many free trade deals as possible that don’t “impose labour, or environmental, standards”.

    3) This is only the beginning It’s going to take at least 2 years of “negotiations” (aka nasty bickering) before the divorce is final. This isn’t just a divorce between people owning nuclear weapons, there is a Dugger’s worth of children involved. Some of which are helpless infants. Most are spoiled, rebellious, teenagers who feel entitled to everything. How could this possibly go wrong???

    ANYBODY who thinks this will end in an exchange of banners and a friendly handshake has been watching too many international football tournaments. This is probably more likely to resemble the negotiations in the Compiègne Wagon to end WW1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compi%C3%A8gne_Wagon which gave birth to the treaty that guaranteed WW2. I think Britain will be “made an example” of and will Leave with nothing, not even access to the family dental plan.

    4) Delusions of “Great” Britain Some Leave-ers blame the EU for all their problems. (Thatcher? Blair? Anyone? Anyone?) So without the EU restrictions, Britain will rule the waves like it did before the EU! I fear that’s Magical Thinking. It’s actually more likely end in the dissolution of “Britain” and likely the privilege of becoming America’s Prison Bitch. As I Canuck, I know what that’s all about. Two words “Anal Lube”.

    Looking at the stats…Scotland and (to a lesser extent) Northern Ireland are more interested in Remaining in the EU than in Great Britain. Ironically, the most iconic remaining symbol of their Empire, Gibraltar, gave the clearest message possible. In an 84% turnout, 96% of Gibraltar voted to Remain!

    Just as Cameron’s days are numbered, Scotland WILL be Leaving. In all likelihood, if this EU referendum came before the Scottish one, the Scotts would be on their way out already.

        It’s funny how the worst possible outcome (a virtual tie) has made the only “winners” the last volks you want to “raise their arms”, so to speak. Atta go, Britain! You’ve made this colonial oh-so proud.
