Democracy After the Arab Spring

This is another post that will meet with strong opposition….you see whenever someone has something positive to say about the region or the religion then they are just being “politically correct” or a “bleeding heart” or….well you get the idiotic idea.

Back in 2011 there was a chance for there to be a ground swell of democratic movements…unfortunately the whole thing was hijacked by radical fundamentalists and authoritarian dickheads…..

This is a really good article about the region and the aftermath of the Arab Spring…….

The Arab Winter convinced many that the Middle East is destined to be a hopelessly repressive region. But peel away the layers and it’s clear there’s both hope and opportunity.

Since the uprisings of the Arab Spring in 2011, an Arab Winter of authoritarian backlash has swept across the Middle East. The setbacks in the Middle East have actually been part of a global phenomenon of authoritarian resurgence that has been marked by increased repression in Russia and China, as well as by setbacks to democracy in smaller countries like Venezuela, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Thailand. But the authoritarian resurgence has been more pronounced in the Middle East than in other regions. Indeed, according to Freedom House, 12 of 18 countries in the Middle East are more repressive today than they were before the Arab Spring uprisings.

  1. I never used to have anything against the Middle East or Muslims. I have never asked anyone their religion – nor do I care – whatever gets a person through the night. They taught me to mistrust them, they declared war on us and to top it off, they do not negotiate or compromise in good faith. So what do you expect?

    1. War was declared by the loudest mouths of the region….kinda like our political campaigns…the loudest mouth gets the media…

      1. But why do the good Muslims refuse to turn in the suspected bad ones? Nut cases like in Orlando do NOT keep their mouths shut – someone knows what they’re planning, but refuse to inform the authorities.

      2. There is lots of condemnation…the problem is that it is not news….it can be spun for days on days of idle speculation…

      3. Not buying it. Marteen’s wife said she tried to talk him out of it. The FBI says she’s cooperating with them – where was she before the shooting? certainly NOT with the FBI.

  2. Nothing like the threat of democracy breaking out to invigorate the forces of oppression. And let’s not get all high & mighty and claim it’s just the problem of the “lesser races”. Authoritarianism is ascendancy over here as well.

And just wait for President Trump to get his tiny little hands on some Executive Powers!

      1. I noted this…
‘It will be a tragic error if the US resigns itself to the notion that democracy cannot work in the Middle East’
        Arrogance…..
        Ques…
When will the west realize that ‘democracy’ in the middle east does not work …not in their tribal genetic makeup……Give them enuf coca cola and it might……

      2. Shit, democracy can’t be made to work in America!!! I guess it’s not in their tribal genetic make-up either.

  3. Politics is poopadoodle.

    Religion is worse.

    Money corrupts. Period.
