Americans And Their “Snake Oil” Salesmen

A Sunday and pleasant weather and a granddaughter that kicked my butt in Dominoes……she is out for revenge….

We Americans are suckers……we will fall for every gimmick and fad around.  You jumped all over the kale BS….the juicer BS and the idea of a “slider”…..back during the mid to late 19th century we had traveling salesmen that sold “snake oil”….a cure for everything that ailed one…..pimples, hemis, liver, heart and STDs…..

I recall my youth and my grandmother that thought all health came from regular bowel movements…..an apple a day sort of thing……that brings me to the con job sold to us about probiotics……we have special pills….special yogurt…..special probiotic diets…..so on and so on….blah blah……

Is it possible that all this probiotic rhetoric is just so much noise?

Probiotics are all the rage—the so-called “good bacteria” teeming naturally in foods such as yogurt and sauerkraut or worked into drinks and pills comprise a growing industry that Fortune reports posted more than $1 billion in annual sales in the US last year. It’s expected to grow a whopping 15% this year alone. But the science of studying how billions of good and bad bacteria alike interact in our bodies is obviously complicated and slow, and critics argue that there isn’t sufficient evidence to market probiotics as having any positive health benefits—some even suggest that these bacteria are killed by stomach acids before reaching the intestine. Now a meta study out of Denmark published in the journal Genome Medicine reflects this skepticism.

“There is little, if any, evidence of an effect of probiotic treatment in circumstances where the microbiota is unperturbed,” researchers write. There are, however, some caveats. First, all studies reviewed were extremely small, with sample sizes ranging from 21 to 81, which calls into question any results, reports the Guardian. And while there doesn’t appear to be any change in the fecal matter of healthy adults using probiotics, some effect was observed in people with “perturbed” microbiota, including “alleviation of gastrointestinal symptoms.” People on antibiotics, for instance, may reap some benefits from eating yogurt. But until better studies are done, the researchers conclude that if you’re healthy, you shouldn’t waste your money.

People…..eat a balanced diet and your bowel should be fine……

But why not?  We have a pill for everything from sleep to sex….better living through chemistry….”there are suckers born every minute”….and the consumer is more gullible than most.

  1. I did just buy a juicer, yesterday. I didn’t do it with the intent of jumping on a bandwagon. I’m sick of buying produce and having it go bad. Eating it is best, but I hope this works in a pinch. Cleaning the thing is a pain in the butt.

  2. The old saw from my dad’s time seems appropriate to describe today’s average consumer, to wit: they can’t tell shit from Shinola….

Roll dem bones, bro…. & have a good day off….

    gigoid, the dubious

    1. I have heard that but what the Hell is “shinola”…..I have always wondered….thanx my friend….chuq

      1. It was brown shoe polish; looked more like shit that the real stuff…. that’s why it’s capitalized….

LOL!…. Funny, until you asked, I hadn’t remembered that part….

        See ya….

  3. Damn near everything contains snake-oil these days. But when it comes to actual food (your kales & such, I think it’s a real mixed bag. Ultimately, the science will eventually…wait for it…ketchup!

One thing is becoming clear; that the authorities are much bigger sellers of snake-oil. Knowingly or not, they have allowed very unhealthy products (ie Frankenfoods) to exist entirely unhindered…not even labelled. But they’ve also actively promoted unhealthy eating habits. For example,

    – Decades of corn subsidies made corn profitable, yet obscenely cheap. This allowed high-fructose corn syrup to weasel its way into damn near every food product, inflate us like blimps & give us diabetes. Corn’s dominance also helped squeeze out far less problematic and less profitable crops. (your broccoli, spinach, etc.) Cheap corn also made for cheaper, fattier, meat that has created fattier citizens with clogged arteries.

The experts also made other huge mistakes like lumping in all types of fats together and over-promoting carbs.

I strongly suspect that most health claims made by the Kale & Kraut crowd will ultimately be discovered to have merit on some level. But probably not nearly the impact many think. In this case, I think the problem is less with the snake-oil seller and more with the buyer. Every idiot out there is looking for “magic bullets” to solve everything and society just keeps encouraging that behaviour.

“Tax cuts will grow the economy”
“Drink this pop and you’ll finally have friends.”
“Eat this kale salad and it will make up for 30 years of deep fried, sugary, processed, shit full of chemical additives.”

The problem is the daily behaviour. The solution is the daily behaviour. Nothing can be cured by eating the same ol’ shit but “Now with blueberries!”. That’s what the food industry wants you to believe and they’re the ones who are selling…maybe not snake-oil…but what the snake-oil is designed to cure.

  4. Yeah .. eat a balanced diet and we will be fine! Oh yeah! — Eat a balanced diet of the hormone and chemical-infused crap they sell for food today and you will definitely probably need those probiotics … and a lot more than that too before it is all said and done.

    1. Maybe…but I have been eating a well balanced diet all my life and I have NO problems with weight or medical ones….since my leg destruction I must go to the doc every two months….grow your own veggies…learn to can….or just wait….we all have a choice

    2. Maybe decades of ingesting unnecessary chemicals & such won’t kill you. Then again, maybe all the hormones will give you DD boobs.

The problem is it takes decades to develop cancer, for example, and all this human experimentation has been going on just long enough to start getting decent results…assuming anyone was looking…which they aren’t. Because if it doesn’t kill you the same day you eat it, the FDA considers it all “perfectly safe”. Some Frankenfoods may trigger immediate allergic reactions, but those are either “untraceable”, or are “not wanted to be traced”.

      We are total Guinea Pigs.

      1. You are right of course when you say “Maybe decades of ingesting unnecessary chemicals and such won’t kill you …” But to that statement I would add this one: But decades of ingesting those chemicals may ultimately do away with the need for the mortuary (Undertaker) profession because by the time people die they will already be embalmed and will never decay.

      2. Good save my family some money on the gas chamber….they can all go out and have a great party in my name….

      3. “Maybe decades of ingesting unnecessary chemicals and such won’t kill you …”

Sorry, I was being “ironic” with that part of my comment. Seeing as the mainstream position is that pouring completely unnecessary shit into the food supply is “perfectly safe”, I should have made my contempt for that position a little clearer.

The “food” the Food Industry gives us doesn’t kill everyone in an overtly noticeable way. But like how gravity pulls the Earth toward the Sun, industrial “food” pulls everyone toward the grave faster than they would otherwise get there. It’s happening right in front of all our faces. But because it happens slowly to most, few notice. It’s like frog legs made from frogs that didn’t notice the water started boiling them.

And along the way, there are many other side-effects. Obesity, diabetes and who knows what else is ultimately traceable to our industrial food supply? (depression, anti-behaviours, gender shit?) Because The Powers That Be aren’t remotely interested in any of that getting out.

      4. Those people care nothing about what this shit does to the people…..as long as they get their benefits from the government it will never change. We are just expendable guinea pigs.

  5. Your story made me think about the diet and light versions of drinks and food
In the USA, Canada and Great-Brittian they use the word diet while in other countries, Netherlands also, the word light.
As far as I remember Coca Cola started with it:
Coca-Cola light, in certain countries, the term ‘diet’ is not used to describe low-calorie foods and beverages.
In these countries, light is used.

I hardly ever eat/drink light versions of food and/or drink, the taste to artificial.
I rather occasionly drink or eat the real thing.

Light version give you a false sense of doing something good for your health.
