Does Patriotism Have a Price?

Back in May of this year I wrote about a program where the Pentagon was paying pro teams for their patriotic programs…..

In case you do not recall my piece……let me refresh your memory……

I bring this up because this scandal has once again been foisted into the national dialog……

You know when you go to a baseball game and invariably during some inning break the team points out a group of soldiers or national guard members in the stands and tries to get a big round of applause going? That doesn’t just happen.

A new report from Sens. John McCain (R – AZ) and Jeff Flake (R – AZ) revealed that the Pentagon has spent over $10 million in recent years to keep those “shows of patriotism” active across sporting events.

Whether it’s paying for special VIP parking for generals or for some team to show the military’s logo on their jumbotron, these programs are overwhelmingly pay-to-play sponsorship schemes. If 20 members of the military are getting the “Richard Petty ride-along experience,” it comes as part of a $1.5 million annual expenditure.

Interestingly, Congressional leaders seem to be of two minds about this heavily subsidized pretense of a pro-military environment, insisting it is a waste of money but largely expecting the teams to continue the programs irrespective of whether they pay for them.

That’s probably not going to be realistic, particularly in the long run, and while it’s certainly a waste of taxpayer money to have the National Guard buying a block of Red Sox tickets, Congress may be about to learn that in the absence of “paid patriotism” there’s going to be a lot less VIP treatment coming the military’s way.

I have been a critic of Americans and their patriotism……

I want to know why the American people are NOT more outraged at this practice…..I mean they are always telling veterans that they are loved and that we appreciate their sacrifice….and yet this seems to be a “not a big deal”… is pathetic that these people need to be paid to show some respect……

Could it be that some form of misplaced loyalty to some team is more important than the integrity of the veterans?….if that is it then I have NO use for you or your moronic loyalty…..and definitely no use for these money grubbing sports teams.

There is absolutely NOTHING important than the well being of our veterans…….

Will anyone else speak up?

The Cowards In The Halls

Remember back when we started our attacks in the Middle East, most notably Syria there was a outpouring of condemnation in Congress because the president had acted without their permission….a vote for the War Powers Act.

The president gave in and sent his authorization to Congress for their approval…..then there was a lull and the vote went No where….why?  Elections!  These toads were afraid their vote one way of the other would come back and bite them in the ass…..they did what they do best….wimp out!

I bring this up because the question of the War Powers Act seems to be sneaking into the conversation……

Under the War Powers Act, Congress is supposed to vote on any war within 60 days of its launch. The ISIS war began in 2014, and because of mid-term elections looming large, Congress just never voted on it, meaning the war was never authorized.

There’ve been a few pushes for Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against ISIS, but they’ve never gotten far. beyond their respective committees.  The administration has simply ignored the lack of authorization for the war so far, but deploying ground troops into Syria is likely to bring the question some new attention.

This is doubly true because, back when those AUMF proposals were making the rounds, endorsed by the White House, they almost all explicitly banned sending ground troops into Syria, meaning even if the administration had gotten their requested authorization, they’d be violating it now.

That also means even if, as some Congressmen hope, the deployment obliges the Congressional leadership to finally see the AUMF brought to a vote, they’re likely going to have to pen a brand new version of the authorization that’s even broader, in keeping with the various ways the war has expanded in recent weeks.

This will be yet another wimp out…after all their are many in Congress looking at an election next year and these people do not want something hung around their neck in front of the voters… way or the other.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R – TN) suggested today that he is open to the idea of a vote on an Authorization for the Use of Military Forces (AUMF) against ISIS, and has scheduled a briefing later this week with the Obama Administration on the possibility.

His comments suggested this was unlikely, however, saying he believes there is “no urgency” for such an authorization unless the administrations says they need additional authority for the war, saying it “feels like they have the authority they need” without a Congressional vote.

“No urgency”?  We are about to send more US troops into the Lion’s den and there is “no urgency”?

Told you so……cowards!

Do Homeschooled Kids Need to Learn?

Okay I have told my readers many times what I think of the idea of homeschooling……it is bullshit!

Homeschooling is used as a way to prevent children from interacting with other children…….especially those of another color……and does a child an extreme injustice…..with public education every child has the chance of a good education…..even a poor one is more preferable than some crap taught by parents at home…..

I recent read a news report about this lawsuit in Texas (go figure…if it is something whacky….then it must be Texas)…….

Laura McIntyre began educating her nine children more than a decade ago inside a vacant office at an El Paso motorcycle dealership she ran with her husband and other relatives. Now the family is embroiled in a legal battle the Texas Supreme Court hears this week that could have broad implications on the nation’s booming home-school ranks. The McIntyres are accused of failing to teach their children educational basics because they were waiting to be transported to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ. At issue: Where do religious liberty and parental rights to educate one’s own children stop and obligations to ensure home-schooled students ever actually learn something begin? The Texas Home School Coalition estimates 300,000 students are home schooled in the state—more than one-sixth of the national total. No one knows for sure since Texas is one of 11 states that don’t require home-school families to register.

Like other Texas home-school families, Laura and her husband Michael McIntyre weren’t required to register with state or local educational officials. They also didn’t have to teach state-approved curriculums or give standardized tests. But problems began when the dealership’s co-owner and Michael’s twin brother, Tracy, reported never seeing the children reading, working on math, using computers, or doing much of anything educational except singing and playing instruments. He said he heard one of them say learning was unnecessary since “they were going to be raptured.” Then, the family’s eldest daughter, 17-year-old Tori, ran away from home saying she wanted to return to school. She was placed in ninth grade, since officials weren’t sure she could handle higher-level work. The El Paso school district eventually asked the McIntyres to provide proof that their children were being properly educated and even filed truancy charges that were later dropped. The family sued and had an appeals court rule against them, but now the case goes Monday to the all-Republican state Supreme Court. Click for more.

The SCOTUS in a state that embraces everything Tea Party……will be an interesting case to follow…..we are talking about a state with a policy of re-writing American history to fit into some revisionist way of life….

I do not understand parents that think they are more capable of teaching than a trained professional…….but they think a mental midget can run this country… maybe homeschooling has its place…..after all look at the obsession that some have over bathroom use……

Free To Choose

DAMN!  The news has been as boring as boring can get…..

We are approaching the next “big” election and I will repeat what I am always saying…..there is NO difference between the two parties…they are just different sides of the same coin….

No matter who you vote for….the country will be worse off!

I saw this cartoon on Twitter and thought it was the perfect example of how this political system works…..

Enough said?

Why Intellectuals Hate Capitalism –

Back in my younger days I was accused of hating capitalism because I was always writing about the inequalities within the system……not that I hate capitalism the institution but rather hated what it had become…..the very essence of inequality.

My thought was that capitalism could be regulated to the point that everyone was a winner…..the business owners could make their divine profits and the workers could make a living that would make them proud to go to work…..

Below is an interesting interview with the CEO of Whole Foods and his thoughts on capitalism……
