Let Libya Be The Example

I hear McCain thumping his chest over Syria…..I hear the Israeli agent at the CFR, Senor, thumping his chest over Syria…..everybody has an opinion but NO one is asking the Syrian people what they want…..without that we would be just meddling….regardless which political moron spouts off……

I realize that Libya is not as interesting as it was before they whacked Qaddafi……..Think back a couple of months ago when Libya was going full stroke and we had the Right and the Left with all their superb opinions and what happened?  Well, the big story in the MSM was that the oil was flowing….and that should tell you what that armed conflict was all about…..

Reports coming out of Libya say that many are being held and ransomed to their families, black Libyans are being murder under the guise that they are mercenaries….and now we have another problem….a problem that is NOT reported in the MSM…….

Cyrenaica, the eastern region of Libya, has elected a regional congress and declared autonomy from the capital Tripoli.

Thousands of major tribal leaders and militia commanders attended a celebratory ceremony in the region’s center Benghazi.

The congress stated that Cyrenaica had suffered decades of marginalization under the ouster ruler Muammar Gaddafi. Now the oil-rich region extending from the coastal city of Sirte to Egyptian border is taking its fortunes into its own hands.

The congress appointed Ahmed al-Zubair Ahmed, who was a political prisoner under Gaddafi and currently is a member of NTC, as leader of its governing council, Al Jazeera reported. Despite being a part of the Libya’s official ruling body, Al-Zubair pledged to protect the rights of the eastern region.

Libya’s National Transitional Council, which started uprising against Gaddafi in Benghazi and moved to Tripoli after his overthrow, repeatedly voiced objection to the planned autonomy. They said Libya’s transformation into a federal state paves the way to eventual split-up of the North African country.

The East, however, is pushing for a return to a system of rule that existed before the coup of 1967 which brought Gaddafi to power. At the time Libya was divided into three states – western Tripolitania, south-western Fezzan and the eastern Cyrenaica (or Barqa in Arabic).

Barqa will follow a peaceful way of making Tripoli and the NTC recognize its autonomy. Baaira does not rule out a possibility of going to the UN for such recognition.

The Easterners have already formed their own army, the Barqa Supreme Military Council, which is independent from the NTC. The army is made up from revolutionaries who fought against Gaddafi rule last year. And now the forces are ready to fight for autonomy, Barqa commander Col. Hamid Al-Hassi says.

“Even if we had to take over the oil fields by deploying our forces there or risk another war, we will not hesitate for the sake of Barqa,” Hassi told the Associated Press.

If only we had been told of this possibility.   But wait!  We were and on the blog entitled Info Ink!

  1. So is this a bad thing compared to life under Khadafi?

Their oil still has to flow into the global market and I don’t see them cutting off their primary source of revenue to build their new nation for some anti-western sentiments that may there. Do you?

    1. Larry. anything would be better than Qadhafi but on the other hand a split could cause problems for the oil flow…the haves and have nots sort of thing….

      1. In may be a good thing in the long run Dr. Chuq. We still have access to enough oil to run our industries and autos but it will cost more and this will force us to use less, invest in alternative energy sources and reduce and our carbon foot print. It’s just too bad it takes such action to make people do what they should do independently.

      2. Larry, the problem is another civil war and that could effect the supply….Europe will be more effected and us…..most of out oil comes from Canada and Mexico……

      3. “Larry, the problem is another civil war and that could effect the supply….Europe will be more effected and us …”

You’re right. If this inner conflict becomes a regional war between Sunnis and Shiites, aided by such tensions in Iraq, this could have greater consequences. I could be wrong though, but I’m not sure how great those consequences would be in crashing western economies long term. There are still plenty of reserves that would fuel essentials for some time. The problem might be however is if Saudi Arabia gets caught up in such a conflict, which is possible.

Still, the greater goal here is to turn our culture around, even through negative consequences, to get us off of fossil energy to a larger extent and start increasing our productivity in developing alternate fuel sources. Cheaper (long term), cleaner and infinite sources. The sacrifices we pay today will reap longer term benefits for future generations

      4. Larry, yep and I will use the same argument I always use….we would have had it if we had listened to Carter….when it comes to gas most Americans say “screw the future, I want cheap gas”! The problem is that oil industry does not want that and as we know money talks….

  2. Lobotero,

You got quite a few people beating the war drums over Iran, too. I heard on the news last night that a senior Israeli intelligence officer said bombing Iran would be stupid. Yet some of our folks seem to be ready take off.

What the hell is going on over there? Geez.

    1. Terrance, it is election time and the chest thumping is en vogue…..the reality is there are about 300 different sites that are in the nuke network, which ones would they bomb? they cannot do all at one time. Israel does not have the bunker busters to accomplish a whole lot, the US does and finally, Israel does not have the capability for aerial refueling….another problem….Any action would be disastrous for the oil markets….and that could be blamed on Obama depending on what he would like to do……
