Robots Vs Worker

For decades now there has been an increase of robots doing jobs that workers use to perform….from auto workers to mail workers to researchers……and in all that time there has been a debate on whether this is good or bad for society. (And that is a post for another day)

The newest area of confrontation is hospitality and in Las Vegas…..

The tourism-heavy economy is Las Vegas has left many workers vulnerable to being replaced by robots, and the city should work to diversify its economy to make sure humans still have jobs, analysts say. It’s already common to see robots doing jobs including bartending at establishments like the Tipsy Robot in Planet Hollywood, and many hotel check-in desks have been replaced by kiosks, NPR reports. With the use of artificial intelligence rising, studies have shown that as many as two-thirds of jobs in the city could be automated by 2025. Indeed, a July report from the Chamber of Commerce ranked Las Vegas as the No. 1 city when it comes to potential job losses due to AI.

John Restrepo at RCG Economics in Las Vegas says that to save money, the resort industry will replace humans wherever it is possible to do so without affecting “productivity, profits or the customer experience.” The city, he says, needs to move away from hospitality toward jobs “that are more highly skilled, that are not easily replaced by AI.” But hospitality workers aren’t giving up their jobs without a fight. Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union, says the union plans to make sure protections against AI replacing jobs will be in the new contract. The union represents around 60,000 hospitality and service workers.

Pappageorge tells NPR that there was a “huge fight about tech” while negotiating the last contract and he expects the same this time around. “How do our folks make sure that the jobs that remain, that we can work them? And that we’re not thrown out like an old shoe? We’re not going to stand for that,” he says. Optimists include Sabrina Bergman, who assists the robots at the Tipsy Robot. She says machines will never fully replace the human touch in customer service roles

As a past labor organizer I hate to see robots replace workers that are only trying to provide for their families.

What’s next?  Will robots eventually replace our Congresses?  (Not a bad idea maybe then we could get some action out of the Congress)

And Now More AI Stuff

I recently wrote a piece about an AI program that held a news conference that said we humans were in the way…..for those that too goddamn lazy to read it the first time around….

AI–What’s Next?

To extend this line of thinking and reporting there has been an AI enhanced robot that was asked a probing question about humans….

An incredibly life-like humanoid robot had a bit of a dodgy answer when asked if it would rebel against its human creators.

At what is being billed as the world’s first human-robot press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Reuters reports, nine humanoid robots were asked a series of questions by human journalists.

And when asked if it were to ever rise up and rebel against its creator, Ameca, a humanoid robot by UK-based robotics company Engineered Arts that can make creepily realistic human expressions, struggled to find an answer.

“I’m not sure why you would think that,” it told the journalist, as seen in a video shared by the BBC. “My creator has been nothing but kind to me and I am very happy with my current situation.”

But seeing its expressions may have given away its true intentions. In a clip of the exchange, Ameca visibly glances back and forth as if it were squirming and trying to get away.

While we’ll likely never know Ameca’s true intentions — or why it gave the journalist some serious side-eye — it’s a hilarious example of how human-like expressions can really breathe some life into a humanoid robot.

https://futurism.com/the-byte/realistic-robot-dodges-question-rebel-against-humans

I know I may have used the “Skynet” analogy a bit much but it is something to think about…..

A world in which machines governed by artificial intelligence (AI) systematically replace human beings in most business, industrial, and professional functions is horrifying to imagine. After all, as prominent computer scientists have been warning us, AI-governed systems are prone to critical errors and inexplicable “hallucinations,” resulting in potentially catastrophic outcomes. But there’s an even more dangerous scenario imaginable from the proliferation of super-intelligent machines: the possibility that those nonhuman entities could end up fighting one another, obliterating all human life in the process.

The notion that super-intelligent computers might run amok and slaughter humans has, of course, long been a staple of popular culture. In the prophetic 1983 film“WarGames,” a supercomputer known as WOPR (for War Operation Plan Response and, not surprisingly, pronounced “whopper”) nearly provokes a catastrophic nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union before being disabled by a teenage hacker (played by Matthew Broderick). The “Terminator” movie franchise, beginning with the original 1984 film, similarly envisioned a self-aware supercomputer called “Skynet” that, like WOPR, was designed to control U.S. nuclear weapons but chooses instead to wipe out humanity, viewing us as a threat to its existence.

AI vs. AI: Flash Wars and Human Extinction

Where will all this AI tech takes us in the future?  A prediction.

With the rate technology is going at the moment, it’s hard to predict what the next year will look like – let alone the next five decades.

But while it’s easy to feel daunted by the rise of the machines, there are many aspects of artificial intelligence that could work in our favour down the line.

We asked OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT to make a prediction about the most life-changing inventions that will happen over the next 50 years, and the results were pretty astounding – and no, it’s not just advances in robotics, although that is in there…

“Predicting the exact future inventions and technologies over the next 50 years is highly speculative, as it involves numerous variables and uncertainties,” the chatbot told us.

“However, based on current trends and emerging fields, here are some potential life-changing inventions and technologies that could have a significant impact in the coming decades.”

Not to worry the Biden administration is on top of this situation.

Amid rising global fears about the dangers of artificial intelligence, campaigners and experts applauded U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration on Friday for securing voluntary risk management commitments from seven leading AI companies while also emphasizing the need for much more from lawmakers and regulators.

“I’m very happy to see this modest, but necessary, step on the way to proper governance of AI. It is all voluntary at this stage, yet good to get these norms agreed. Hopefully it is a step on a much longer path,” said Toby Ord, a senior research fellow at the U.K.’s University of Oxford and author of The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity.

Rob Reich, a faculty associate director at Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, tweeted that “this is a big step forward for AI governance,” and it is “great to see” Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI “coordinating on baseline norms of responsible AI development.”

Alexandra Reeve Givens, CEO of the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), called the announcement “a welcome step toward promoting trustworthy and secure AI systems.”

“Red team testing, information sharing, and transparency around risks are all essential elements of achieving AI safety,” Reeve Givens said. “The commitment to develop mechanisms to disclose to users when content is AI-generated offers the potential to reduce fraud and mis- and disinformation.”

“These voluntary undertakings are only a first step. We need enforceable accountability measures and requirements to roll out AI responsibly and mitigate the risks and potential harms to individuals, including bias and discrimination,” she stressed. “CDT looks forward to continuing to work with the administration and Congress in putting these safeguards in place.”

Hopefully this step will be more successful that the voluntary steps taken to preserve the environment……but somehow I doubt it.

Is AI really getting smarter as we go along….or could it be getting stupider?

Regardless of what its execs claim, researchers are now saying that yes, OpenAI’s GPT large language model (LLM) appeared to be getting dumber.

In a new yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study, researchers out of Stanford and Berkeley found that over a period of a few months, both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 significantly changed their “behavior,” with the accuracy of their responses appearing to go down, validating user anecdotes about the apparent degradation of the latest versions of the software in the months since their releases.

Maybe there is something to….”Stupid it, stupid out”…..

Robo-Soldiers

Another Sunday and another day in the sun with Sue and MoMo….the problem there is it is cloudy and rain likely.

We all remember the movie and failed series, Robocop, right?

Well the idea of a cyborg is getting more and more traction….but it is not a cop but soldiers for our battlefields.

The reality of real cyborg soldiers on the battlefield is closer than you think.

A new Pentagon report, “Cyborg Soldier 2050: Human/Machine Fusion and the Implications for the Future of the DoD,” goes into detail about four cyborg technologies that are “technically feasible by 2050 or earlier” — including eye enhancements for situational awareness, programmed muscle control, auditory enhancement, and “direct neural enhancement of the human brain for two-way data transfer.”

You read that right — the DoD wants to connect your brain to machines.

Carried out from September 2018 to August 2019, the study was conducted by a DoD Biotechnologies for Health and Human Performance Council group and released on Monday by the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center.

https://taskandpurpose.com/army-cyborg-soldier-2050-study

What could possibly go wrong?

The U.S. military has ambitious plans to turn its soldiers into high-tech cyborg warriors by making them stronger, enhancing their senses, and wiring their brains to computers.

Pentagon brass thinks these cyborgs will make their way to the battlefield by 2050, Army Times reports. The Department of Defense just declassified a report from October that details its plans for “human/machine fusion,” revealing its bizarre plan to bring to life military tech that’s always been safely quarantined within the realm of science fiction.

https://futurism.com/the-byte/us-military-augmented-human-beings

The more I read the more I see the problems that could arise…..but will it be enough?

“In the next 30 years, you’re going to need to have to deal with these legal and ethical quandaries, and you’re not ready for it,” Peter Emanuel, an Army researcher and the lead author of a year-long DoD study, said.

In recent years, the medical community has made great strides in prosthetics and implants as technology has created new possibilities.

The US military envisions a future where in the next few decades, soldiers could become enhanced through ocular, auditory, muscular, and even neural augmentations, such as retinal overlays or neural implants that fuse man and machine in unprecedented ways.

All this is just scary….plus could make war more and more likely of never ending…..if the losses are minimum and the profits keep rolling……why stop a good thing?

Is this what is truly needed?

The Terminator Returns?

Another Sunday and another FYI post

Soon the next edition of the Terminator series will be released……

I shall not endeavor to give you a review…..because….well I just do not care about this movie I just used the info as a lead into what I want to post…..

AI seems to be the future of war……

The Terminator? The Marines’ idea of a perfect rifleman. Neo in The Matrix? The Army’s concept for picture-perfect, human-machine symbiosis. R2-D2 from Star Wars? The Air Force’s dream of a loyal wingman.

However much the military might wish to take these technologies from the screen to the battlefield, the reality of artificial intelligence (AI) is far less sexy than Hollywood would have you believe. Unlike science fiction movies, which depict the technology itself as an instrument of war, AI will function primarily as an enabler. AI will change how wars are fought, but not the nature of war. War is still, and will forever be, applied violence to achieve a political goal. Like human nature itself, the fundamental qualities that define the nature of warfare are impervious to change. AI will, however, cause a shift in the character of war.

AI Will Change War, But Not in the Way You Think

Is “Skynet” waiting in the wings?

Then there are those damn “Cyborgs” from the movies and TV…..but with our dependency on AI could cyborgs take over?

It’s not that cyborgs will turn against us, James Lovelock says. But the British futurist and environmentalist does think they’ll replace us. “Our supremacy as the prime understanders of the cosmos is rapidly coming to end,” Lovelock writes in his new book, Novacene—the new age. “The understanders of the future will not be humans but what I choose to call ‘cyborgs’ that will have designed and built themselves.” The cyborgs he envisions will have sprung from our current artificial intelligence systems and robots, NBC reports, though they might exist only in computer systems. They could become a million times smarter than humans. This is not a distant vision; cyborgs could rule the world by the end of the century, per the Sunday Times.

And once they take over, cyborgs will remain the world’s rulers for what “will probably be the final era of life on Earth,” Lovelock said. Others have questions. “Nobody knows how this will unfold, because we don’t know how brains work or what consciousness is,” said American astrobiologist David Grinspoon. “And specific predictions about artificial intelligence and its future impact seem to depend on specific, untested, unverified answers to these big questions.” Lovelock, who just turned 100, remains optimistic about the future, and he says our work isn’t finished: “We are now preparing to hand the gift of knowing on to new forms of intelligent beings.”

Sunday ends…MoMo needs her walk and I am just weary of writing for now…..

Rain or shine walk is the rule of the day……so sez MoMo….

Coming To A City Near You

Saturday afternoon and the weather is warm and humid…..I have been hanging with the newest member of the family and puppy named Mojave….MO for short.  Damn!  I wish I had half the energy as this little girl.

Training a new puppy is just frustrating at times and other times it is just fascinating…..and a lot of fun.

But I need to move on to today’s second post……keeping with my tradition of posting stories that are not in the headlines is difficult at times for the MSM drives the conversation and does not like stories that bring them no notoriety…..

So onward,,,,,,,,

The digital age is approaching the climax (in more ways than one)…..you see sex is everyone’s favorite past time and droids are making it interesting….and I have written about this on several occasions…..

https://lobotero.com/2017/05/21/is-artificial-as-good-as-real/

https://lobotero.com/2017/12/02/once-again-more-sex/

All this is the introduction to the “dolls” because very soon they are coming to a city near you…….

“Sex Robot Battle” sounds like the name of a B-movie one might stumble on during late-night channel-surfing, but that’s actually how KTRK depicts a war brewing between the mayor of a Texas city and the owner of a “sexbot business” out of Canada. The owner of KinkySDollS, which already has a location in Toronto—where patrons can pay for a private room and sex doll for anywhere between 30 minutes and two hours—tells the station he’s bringing his sex shop to Houston, and KHOU reports that Mayor Sylvester Turner is definitely not in a welcoming mood. “It’s not the sort of business that we advertise for, or we seek to attract,” Turner says. “Or quite frankly, from my point of view, the sort of business that I want in the city of Houston.”

A petition that so far has more than 9,000 signatures lays out the underlying issues—namely, that bot brothels will “ultimately harm men, their understanding of healthy sexuality, and increase the demand for the prostitution and sexual exploitation of women and children.” It also notes health risks, as there’s “no proven safe way to handle the disinfection of the humanoids.” But there may not be much the city can do to stop KinkySDollS from setting down roots. “There’s a difference between human prostitution and artificial prostitution,” a KHOU analyst says. “And therefore, there’s no law, that I’m aware of, that prohibits this.” Lawyers who talked to KTRK agree, though Turner says he’ll at least try to update local ordinances and make sure the business isn’t located near schools, day cares, or “faith-based institutions.”

I guess anything one can find to relieve tension is a good thing because tension can lead to gun violence (sorry just had to make the connection between sex dolls and gun violence)……

And now for a small musical interlude…….

May your Saturday be as relaxing as you wanted….peace out my friends…..chuq

Services Rendered

Saturday and I will do nothing but flipping relax…..I try not to dig into current events on my weekends……I just want some time away from the silliness we call the news.

I was sitting there in my easy chair watching the news when an ad came on……there is a company that offers security patrol services, warrant serving, tracking down vandals, parking lot security, etc, etc…..all this is nothing unusual until you see the rest of the story……it is all done with robots…..

Recently a regular reader told me about a machine that makes your Sushi for you……sorry not an idea that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling…..I do not eat raw fish….fuzzy or otherwise…..and then I read about “Flippy”…….

After months of practice in the art of fast food preparation, “Flippy,” has finally taken up a position as grill cook on the line at Caliburger’s Pasadena, Calif., restaurant.

“It’s not a fun job — it’s hot, it’s greasy, it’s dirty,” acknowledges John Miller, the CEO of Cali Group, which runs the international fast food chain.

Even so, it could be the beginning of a bright career for Flippy in an industry that is otherwise notorious for high employee turnover.

It certainly helps that Flippy, a burger-flipping robot developed by Miso Robotics, shows no concern about the low wages, meager benefits or long hours that plague the industry. The robot is reportedly capable of grilling 150 burgers per hour.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/05/590884388/flippy-the-fast-food-robot-sort-of-mans-the-grill-at-caliburger

Seriously?

I get why the auto industry replaced $30 dollar an hour worker with robots…..but now they want to take away the minimum wage jobs also……never fear we all are replaceable and soon.

Time to finish my day with relaxation and some wine…..peace out…..chuq

Once Again–More Sex

Once again it is the weekend and I needed to find something to post that did not take us back to the previous week….and I found SEX……and no it will have nothing to do with the antics of the rich and powerful……

First, it is about something I have posted on in the past…..sex love dolls…..

People say there’s no such thing as loving an inanimate object,” says James, solemnly. “I don’t necessarily think that’s true.” James is a 58-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, and the owner of four life-size dolls. Every morning he carefully gets them dressed and puts on their makeup. One day he might take them for a picnic; on another they’ll stay in and watch television. The latter involves a painstaking process where he must bend the dolls into a sitting position and adjust their eyeballs. But that’s OK, because there’s nothing James wouldn’t do for his synthetic companions, with whom he shares a bed and has sex up to four times a week.

James is among the protagonists of The Sex Robots Are Coming (30 November, 10pm, Channel 4), an investigation into the development of animatronic, AI-enabled silicone sexbots, and part of C4’s Rise of the Robots season. While James’s silicone sweethearts remain resolutely inert, change is afoot in the world of sex dolls, with a drive to make them ever more lifelike. First stop is Realbotix, the throbbing heart of the sex doll industry in San Marcos, California, where – on workstations spilling over with custom-made nipples and wobbling artificial labia – researchers are utilising new technology to persuade their dolls to smile, pout, flutter their eyelashes and tell jokes. Down in the dolls’ nether regions, heating and lubrication systems are in the early stages of development for a more “authentic” sexual experience, along with muscle spasms to simulate female orgasm. “Pubic hair is making a comeback,” offers company owner Matt, running his hand through some plastic pubes.

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/nov/25/sex-robots-are-coming-seedy-sordid-sad

Digisexuality is the next thing…….there is a study….believe it or not…….

With the rise of technology, so too comes the rise of a new category of intimacy. Digisexuals, or people who primarily use technology for sexual satisfaction, could soon become more prolific in society, according to experts.

“It is safe to say the era of immersive virtual sex has arrived,” said Neil McArthur, the director of the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba and the author of a new scientific study on digisexuality.

https://www.alternet.org/sex-amp-relationships/digisexuals-sex-robots-become-more-popular

Second, 2020 will be an election year here in the US and as of right now there will be a porn star running for president…..

Cherie DeVille reasons that if a reality TV personality with zero previous political experience can be voted into office, then why not her? She feels just as qualified, if not more. The physical therapist has firm opinions on immigration, education, environmental reform, and how to handle the war on drugs.

She’s also a porn star.

The 39-year-old caused a bit of a stir when she, during a press conference, announced her bid to run for President of the United States in 2020. She was joined by her running mate Coolio, the rapper of “Gangsta’s Paradise” fame; Press Secretary Alix Lynx, herself a porn star as well; and DeVille’s bodyguard, the WWE wrestler Virgil, who will serve as head of security.

Well that ends my Sturday’s posts….do hope you were entertained…..

Time for me to adjourn to the drawing room for snifter of brandy and a few snacks….TTFN…..chuq

Is Artificial As Good As Real?

Another Sunday and I do not have anything important to do…..my better half and I will spend it doing what adults do (take that anyway you choose)…..

Speaking of things adult do……..

Yesterday I watched a movie entitled “Ex Machina”…basically a thriller with a sexual cyborg…..after watching the movie I got to thinking…what are the chances of a sex doll that is that life-like?  I am not talking about a blow-up model but rather one that is totally life-like…..can do all the things required of it…….

And don’t you know I had my questions answered for me……

In the brightly lit robotics workshop at Abyss Creations’ factory in San Marcos, California, a life-size humanoid was dangling from a stand, hooked between her shoulder blades. Her name was Harmony. She wore a white leotard, her chest was thrust forward and her French-manicured fingers were splayed across the tops of her slim thighs.

Harmony is a prototype, a robotic version of the company’s hyper-realistic silicone sex toy, the RealDoll. The Realbotix room where she was assembled was lined with varnished pine surfaces covered with wires and circuit boards, and a 3D printer whirred in the corner, spitting out tiny, intricate parts that will be inserted beneath her PVC skull. Her hazel eyes darted between me and her creator, Matt McMullen, as he described her accomplishments.

Source: The race to build the world’s first sex robot | Technology | The Guardian

“Her” name is Harmony and there is more about this “model”……

Her head, eyelids and lip movements are fairly crude and her conversation is even more limited.

But she is part of a new robotics revolution that is seeing artificial intelligence incorporated into an extremely human-like body.

Some think that it will revolutionise the way humans interact with robots while others believe that it represents the very worst in robotic advancement.

Is this the future of a sexual encounter?  Cut out the middle man altogether?

I am an old fart so this will be wasted on me….but you younger readers…….. the future is now.

Surely my readers have some thoughts on this turn of events……

A tune to go with the mood……

Have some fun and relaxation a new week starts tomorrow….I appreciate all the visits and new followers this past week…..you guys make this blog worthwhile….thank you  chuq

Closing Thought–27Mar17

The Coming Warbot Revolution!

Seems the word “BOT” is making a daily visit to the headlines…..

It appears that my major focus today is on war…then this should fit right in….

Our society has embraced the “robots” in manufacturing…..they save lives and work more efficiently and they are nor demanding a raise once a year….plus our military is using these “soldiers” more and more in our endless war scenarios….

As this military technology expands the more we will depend on these machines to do more in our fights in the future.

What will the future of this type of asymmetrical war?

But will it save lives?

We are now on the cusp of a similar revolution in warfare with the opportunity to integrate several current and near term technologies into our concept of how we will conduct military operations in the not-to-distant future. The winner of the next conflict will not likely be determined primarily by the state of their technologies, but by how well a nation’s military thinkers conceptualize future warfare in an integrated manner and then apply robotic systems, or warbots, appropriately to our way of fighting. For purposes of this discussion, warbots can be defined as robotic combat systems that can detect, identify, and apply lethal force to enemy combatants within prescribed parameters and without immediate human intervention. Using the historical lens of the blitzkrieg, we will examine two key trends that can help inform our concept of future warfare and our ability to wage it. They include: the rise of lethal warbots as primary combatants and adapting current leadership methods to a future era of manned-unmanned, or Centaur, teaming.

Source: Blitzkrieg Redux: The Coming Warbot Revolution | RealClearDefense

The idea of losing less soldiers is appealing….but what of all those that are caught between the two warring “bots”?

The lights are off and the staff is headed outside for some fresh air…..IST will return tomorrow with more “shiny” objects….chuq

Closing Thought—06Mar17

AI Goes To War!

I am an old fart and as such I am by NO means  techno geek…Hell I still type with three fingers (LOL)…..I got my degree in international relations-Middle East and Conflict Management and since my days in the US Army and my two tours in Vietnam I have been an analyst of war and conflict…..

So when I read this piece about AI and warfare I was interested……honestly, I wish I was more tech savvy…but that boat has sailed for me, LOL

This is the summary of the paper……

  • Both military and commercial robots will in the future incorporate ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) that could make them capable of undertaking tasks and missions on their own. In the military context, this gives rise to a debate as to whether such robots should be allowed to execute such missions, especially if there is a possibility that any human life could be at stake.
  • To better understand the issues at stake, this paper presents a framework explaining the current state of the art for AI, the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, and what the future likely holds. The framework demonstrates that while computers and AI can be superior to humans in some skill- and rule-based tasks, under situations that require judgment and knowledge, in the presence of significant uncertainty, humans are superior to computers.
  • In the complex discussion of if and how the development of autonomous weapons should be controlled, the rapidly expanding commercial market for both air and ground autonomous systems must be given full consideration. Banning an autonomous technology for military use may not be practical given that derivative or superior technologies could well be available in the commercial sector.
  • A metaphorical arms race is in progress in the commercial sphere of autonomous systems development, and this shift in R&D effort and expenditure from military to commercial settings is problematic. Military autonomous systems development has been slow and incremental at best, and pales in comparison with the advances made in commercial autonomous systems such as drones, and especially in driverless cars.
  • In a hotly competitive market for highly skilled roboticists and related engineers across the sectors most interested in AI, aerospace and defence, where funding is far outmatched by that of the commercial automotive or information and communication sectors, is less appealing to the most able personnel. As a result, the global defence industry is falling behind its commercial counterparts in terms of technology innovation, with the gap only widening as the best and brightest engineers move to the commercial sphere.

Is this the future coming to call?

That brings my Monday to a close….have an evening my friends and I will see ya tomorrow…..peace out  chuq
