Trump’s “Mighty” Pen……

The stage is set for Trump to use his muscle and issue his second veto…..

The story so far……

After voting down a Republican motion to recommit, the House of Representatives voted on Thursday to pass S.J. Res 7, the Senate version of the War Powers Act challenge to US involvement in the war in Yemen. The vote was 247-175-1.

This Senate passed this resolution in March, and sends the resolution to President Trump, who has threatened to veto it. So far it appears unlikely that Congress will be able to override such a veto.

Both House votes on Yemen ran heavily along party lines. The War Powers Act requires any US war to be approved by Congress, and the resolution notes that Congress never authorized any such war in Yemen.

The administration has argued that the four years of war in Yemen technically don’t count under the War Powers Act, sometimes overtly lying about the extent of US involvement in Yemen, and other times arguing that support for the Saudi-led war is obligated because of arms sales to them.

Congress for the first time invoked the decades-old War Powers Resolution to try and stop a foreign conflict. “The president will have to face the reality that Congress is no longer going to ignore its constitutional obligations when it comes to foreign policy,” said Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He said the humanitarian crisis in Yemen triggered by the war “demands moral leadership.”

The war is in its fifth year. Thousands of people have been killed and millions are on the brink of starvation. The United Nations has called the situation in Yemen the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The top Republican on the committee, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, acknowledged the dire situation in Yemen for civilians, but he spoke out in opposition to the bill, saying it was an abuse of the War Powers Resolution. “This radical interpretation has implications far beyond Saudi Arabia,” McCaul said. He warned that the measure could “disrupt US security cooperation agreements with more than 100 counties.” Opposition to the Saudi-led war in Yemen gathered support last year in the aftermath of the death of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of agents of the kingdom.

If true….can the Congress override a veto?

Do they, Congress, have the guts to do so?

Domestic Terror

Is the chance of a domestic terror attack unlikely?  Will it be a thing of the past?

Most of the terrorist attacks in this country have mostly been from homegrown terrorists….and not all have been zealots…..more than our Fearless leader wants to admit have been Right wing nutcases…..sadly whether you believe it or not our President is not helping the situation………….

Politics quickly eclipsed horror after Robert Bowers allegedly gunned down 11 worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue in October. The shooting, the worst anti-Semitic attack in American history, almost immediately became intertwined with Donald Trump’s divisive presidency. While the president appropriately condemned a “wicked act of murder” and anti-Semitism in general, he also quickly veered toward his own domestic political agenda, telling reporters that the shooting was not related to permissive gun laws and, in fact, “if they had some kind of a protection inside the temple, maybe it could have been a very much different situation, but they didn’t. And he was able to do things that unfortunately he shouldn’t have been able to do.”

Progressive Jews in Pittsburgh expressed their anger at the president, circulating a petition asking him not to visit the city because he had failed to condemn white nationalism and had targeted minorities in general. Trump then, of course, tweeted against the “Fake News” media for how they were covering the story.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/01/right-wing-terrorism-trump-rhetoric.html

Trump’s Department Of Homeland Security has decided that since there are NO domestic terrorists they will shutdown the department that tries to isolate and stop any attacks on the Homeland……..

The Department of Homeland Security has disbanded a group of intelligence analysts who focused on domestic terrorism, The Daily Beast has learned. Numerous current and former DHS officials say they find the development concerning, as the threat of homegrown terrorism—including white supremacist terrorism—is growing.

In the wake of this move, officials said the number of analytic reports produced by DHS about domestic terrorism, including the threat from white supremacists, has dropped significantly. People in and close to the department said this has generated significant concern at headquarters.

“It’s especially problematic given the growth in right-wing extremism and domestic terrorism we are seeing in the U.S. and abroad,” one former intelligence official told The Daily Beast.

Maybe this was a duplication of effort…if so then it needs to go….but that is about the only reason I can think of right now……

I know I feel so much safer with Trump in the lead…(that is sarcasm)….how about you?

Closing Thought–03Apr19

I have been accused of hating Pres. Trump…..that is a mis-statement by whoever repeats it.

The truth is I dislike the man and his arrogance……I have always disliked arrogance wherever I find it and I found it in this person who pretends to be a president of the US…..

What arrogance I would imagine that some micro brain individual may be asking themselves (for they will not ask me)…..so I give you an example…..

President Trump continued his Mueller report victory lap with a rally in Michigan on Thursday night, where he ripped into the “fake news media,” Democrats, and the FBI, among others, and declared that “the Russia hoax is finally dead.” At the Grand Rapids rally—his first since Attorney General William Barr released his summary of the special counsel’s report—the president slammed DC “elites” and listed ways in which he sees himself as better than them. “I have a better education than them, I’m smarter than them, I went to the best schools; they didn’t. Much more beautiful house, much more beautiful apartment. Much more beautiful everything. And I’m president and they’re not,” he told the packed arena, per Fox News.

You see I do not believe a word of this……why? If he was truly all those things he would not need to taunt his stuff.

I will call out arrogance wherever I find it….and I find a shit load of it in the person we call president.

You may like to belittled and talked down to but I do not and I refuse to stand by while some blow hard bumps his gums with bullshit.

Enough said!

TTFN!

That Pesky Health Care

After the Mueller report was released to the AG and he did his best to make it fit with the Trump bullshit for the last two years then the president started his usual crap about his perfect health care and that everyone would be covered regardless….a health plan the entire nation will love has NEVER come about…..empty promises and lies about Obamacare is all the nation ever got from this poser……and as sad as that is it is better than what we got from the GOP…..the same GOP that voted 50+ times to try and repeal Obamacare…..these same cowards have NOTHING to say and when they talk crickets is all we hear.

And as of recently Mr. Trump has done what he does best…..he waffles and changes direction……

President Trump shifted strategy on ObamaCare in a series of late-night tweets: He still hates it, but he won’t push for a Republican alternative until after the 2020 election, reports Bloomberg. “Everybody agrees that ObamaCare doesn’t work,” he wrote. “Premiums & deductibles are far too high.” He said the GOP is working on a better, cheaper solution, adding, “Vote will be taken right after the Election when Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House.” The tweets come after a week in which Trump’s White House got newly aggressive against ObamaCare, first by arguing in court that the entire law should be declared unconstitutional. Then Trump himself promised that the GOP “will soon be known as the party of health care.”

However, Politico reports that GOP leaders made clear to the White House they did not want to make ObamaCare a focal part of the 2020 election, because they were hurt on the issue in the midterms. As Bloomberg points out, the law has gradually become more popular with voters. Democrats already have seized on the administration’s aggressive court strategy and are planning a resolution to condemn an “unacceptable assault on the health care of the American people,” per USA Today. That would force House Republicans, assuming they back the president, to go on the record as agreeing with the strategy to kill the entire law. One thing not changing: Both Trump and Republicans are still going after Democrats’ “Medicare for All” initiatives.

I love it when this poser says the GOP will soon be known as the party of health care……seriously? The party that has not had an alternative to Obamacare in 9 years.exercise or smoking….cannot get any more pathetic……

The president (I use the term loosely) is afraid of losing so he will waffle whenever it suits him…regardless what he has promised in the past….it is always about the knee jerk response and then the back pedal……typical coward tactics.

Thanx to the GOP the most important factors determining a person’s health is not diet or exercise of even smoking…..the most important factors are social class and race. Period!

The one thing that the GOP and this president do not realize is that health care is the single most important issue to most Americans.

Time for Americans to vote their need.

One More “National Emergency”

We have an imaginary national emergency on the border and we will throw money at a problem that does not exist only in the mind of a delusional malignant toad.

He, Trump, has even stopped aid to “3 Mexican counties” (as FOX News put it…..”
Sunday morning’s Fox & Friends applauded President Donald Trump’s Saturday directive to cut aid to Central American countries by declaring, “Trump Cuts U.S Aid to 3 Mexican Countries.” )…..he keeps doubling down on this border fantasy that his base laps up like sweet pudding…….

Taking drastic action over illegal immigration, President Trump moved Saturday to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, whose citizens are fleeing north and overwhelming US resources at the southern border. The State Department notified Congress that it would look to suspend 2017 and 2018 payments to the trio of nations, which have been home to some of the migrant caravans that have marched through Mexico to the US border, reports the AP.

We know there will be a full field of Dem candidates for 2020….so the question is will Trump stand for re-election?

My thought is yes he will because he has not milking all the money he can out of the presidency.

Now let’s say he loses his bid….will he go peacefully from office?

What better way to retain that hold than to use a tactic he, Trump, has used before….declare a “national emergency” and stay in the White House until the legal wrangling is over.

I wrote about that awhile back……https://lobotero.com/2019/03/18/will-he-ever-go/

The below article was printed in Raw Story…..it pertains to the Mueller Report more so than an election but the outcome could be the same…..

But ultimately, politics is not about what is always right and just but rather what is practical and expedient.

Why is impeaching Donald Trump viewed by many people — including prominent Democrats — as a near-term impossibility? Could impeachment succeed, and under what circumstances? Are congressional investigations and hearings a better way of holding Trump and his administration accountable for their misdeeds and general disregard for democracy? What would happen if Donald Trump were to be impeached and convicted, or if he loses the 2020 presidential election? Would he declare a national emergency in an effort to stay in office?

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/03/trump-may-not-leave-office-peacefully-will-declare-national-emergency-loses-2020-harvard-constitution-expert/

I recall there were many that thought GW and Obama would use their executive power to retain office, their hold on the presidency, but Trump strikes me as someone who would want to retain his strangle hold on the country and its policies.

Side Note: This is just an opinion….no one is saying this will happen….just that it could….please do some thought before attacking….works best for everyone.

Trade War Consequences

Trump has declared a trade war on China (among others) and outcome is benefiting a country that he has used in the past…..Mexico.

Remember Mexico…that country that would pay for his damn silly border wall? They will not!

But since he has seen fit to declare this trade war Mexico will benefit the most.

The Trump Administration’s trade war with China has turned out to be a windfall for another country the president frequently berates: Mexico.

Consider Fuling Global Inc., a Chinese maker of plastic utensils that developed a lucrative business making paper cups and straws for U.S. restaurants. But President Trump upended all that with tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports, including paper products. So the company found an alternative, opening a $4 million factory in Monterrey, Mexico, that will soon begin shipping millions of paper straws across the border.

“We had to look for other ways to do business,’” said Fuling Chief Financial Officer Gilbert Lee. The move means the Wenling, China-based company will avoid the tariffs and make up for pricier Mexican labor with lower shipping costs. “Mexico is a very logical and advantageous location for us.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-27/who-is-winning-trump-s-trade-war-with-china-so-far-it-s-mexico

We keep waiting for the return of our manufacturing jobs (that will never return but we were promised) to all that cash that would return from offshore (to be fair some of the cash has come home but not enough)….

Trump’s trade war is not helping Americans in the least…..but Mexico will make out like the bandits they are accused of being (that is sarcasm not a pronouncement).

Foreign Policy Today

The title sounds like a PBS Special for a Sunday Night….

As an analyst of foreign policy I am always interested in what candidates have to offer….and these days I am not too thrilled with our current leader…..his foreign policy seems a bit amateurish and infantile…..

In the last 60+ years our foreign policy can be labelled a “liberal” foreign policy…..and in that time the hypocrisy of our policies have come to light….

Former US vice-president Joe Biden asserted at the 2019 Munich Security Conference that ‘this too shall pass’, referring to the Trump administration’s challenges to the transatlantic alliance structure and US commitment to multilateralism. Unfortunately, any assumption that America’s commitment to global engagement will revert to the status quo ante in 2021 if President Donald Trump is not re-elected belies the growing polarization in US public opinion about America’s role in the world.

This partisan divide in Americans’ sentiment pre-dated Trump’s election and is likely to continue whatever the outcome of the next US presidential election. Americans have long held ambivalent feelings about their relationship with the rest of the world. Many are descendants of people who turned their backs on their homelands to seek a better life in the New World. Thomas Jefferson’s admonition against ‘entangling alliances’ was a mantra taken up by isolationists in the first half of the 20th century who argued against early US entry into both world wars.

https://www.chathamhouse.org/expert/comment/us-foreign-policy-will-continue-divide-americans-beyond-2020#

If anyone else were president, the “liberals” would be celebrating. After all, pulling American soldiers out of a couple of failing, endless wars seems like a “win” for progressives. Heck, if Obama did it there might be a ticker-tape parade down Broadway. And there should be. The intervention in Syria is increasingly aimless, dangerous and lacks an end state. Afghanistan is an unwinnable war – America’s longest – and about to end in outright military defeat. Getting out now and salvaging so much national blood and treasure ought to be a progressive dream. There’s only one problem: Donald Trump. Specifically, that it was Trump who gave the order to begin the troop withdrawals.

Lost in the haze of their pathological hatred of President Trump, the majority of mainstream liberal pundits and politicians can’t, for the life of them, see the good sense in extracting the troops from a couple Mideast quagmires. That or they can see the positives, but, in their obsessive compulsion to smear the president, choose politics over country. It’s probably a bit of both. That’s how tribally partisan American political discourse has become. And, how reflexively hawkish and interventionist today’s mainstream Democrats now are. Whither the left-wing antiwar movement? Well, except for a few diehards out there, the movement seems to have been buried long ago with George McGovern.

https://original.antiwar.com/danny_sjursen/2019/01/07/hypocrisy-without-bounds-the-tragedy-of-liberal-foreign-policy/

Then we elected Trump and in the beginning I was with him on some of his foreign policy issues but that quickly went down the toilet after he was elected and his true self came to light……

Those anticipating that President Donald Trump would spend a considerable part of his State of the Union address on foreign policy likely came away disappointed. With the exceptions of his bragging about the U.S. military being stronger and better than ever before, killing one of the al-Qaeda operatives who planned the USS Cole attack over 18 years ago, and condemning Nicolás Maduro-style socialism, Trump was noticeably subdued on events beyond America’s shores.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Trump administration’s favorite target, was portrayed as led by depraved fanatics intent on committing murder and mayhem throughout the Middle East. Russia—a country that has caused Trump all sorts of political trouble in Washington—was called out for violating the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Chinese President Xi Jinping was described as a friend while his government was excoriated as a predatory economic behemoth that has sapped America of its wealth, killed its manufacturing sector, stolen its intellectual capital, and decimated its blue-collar workforce. And Trump minced no words when briefly talking about Venezuela’s Maduro, who has plundered a once wealthy Latin American nation.

https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/trumps-new-era-on-foreign-policy/

Keep in mind the above link is a conserv link and in as such can be a bit neocon in content…..

I then read an article that says that Americans want a less aggressive foreign policy….really?

For decades, American foreign policy has rested on a consensus view about the United States’ role in the world. In an international order where there is one unrivaled superpower, foreign policy experts agree that U.S. soldiers and taxpayer dollars are essential for preserving global stability. But that is an assumption that is not necessarily shared by the American public, based on the findings of a new study Worlds Apart: U.S. Foreign Policy and American Public Opinion, conducted by the Eurasia Group Foundation (EGF), an organization I serve as Board President.

No matter what party they claim allegiance to, Americans favor a foreign policy that resists entanglements abroad, the survey found—and it’s not limited to conservative libertarians on the right and liberal pacifists on the left. In every age group polled, respondents exhibited a waning appetite for the obligations and impositions of imperial governance.

http://time.com/5532307/worlds-apart-foreign-policy-public-opinion-poll-eurasia/

I am NOT sure I agree with that conclusion. Why? I do not believe that most Americans have a grip on foreign policy beyond their favorite news channel…..

Another look at this survey…….https://www.theamericanconservative.com/larison/americans-want-greater-restraint-in-foreign-policy/

I disagree because of the public acceptance of the many many wars we are currently fight…..

It seems the only people that are fighting against all these wars are the people that had to fight them….our veterans….https://truthout.org/articles/veterans-demand-congress-end-the-forever-wars/

We need to find a way to educate the voter on our foreign policy….for as long as they stay uninformed the military can run rough shod over their decisions and as long as the MSM works as the propaganda arm of our polices we will stay in a forever war.

What we need is a Progressive foreign policy….

The 2020 election will not turn on global issues of – and more’s the pity. After all, thanks to decades upon decades of accumulating executive power in an increasingly imperial presidency, it is in foreign affairs that the commander-in-chief possesses near dictatorial power. Conversely, in domestic policy, a hostile Congress can – just ask Barry Obama – effectively block most of a president’s agenda.

Still, the vast majority of Americans don’t give a hoot about issues of war, peace, and international diplomacy. Why should they care? It’s not as though anything is asked of them as citizens. By cynically ditching the draft, Tricky Dick Nixon took the wind out of the sails of current and future antiwar movements, and permanently cleaved a gap between the U.S. people and their military. Mothers no longer lose sleep over their teenage sons serving their country and they – along with the rest of the family – quit caring about foreign policy. Such it is, and so it will be, that the 2020 presidential election is likely to be decided by “kitchen-table” affairs like healthcare, immigration, race, and taxes.
