Closing Thought–31Mar21

It’s official Donald the Orange has his own social platform.

“The Magnificent Legacy of the Trump Presidency”?

When I read those words I damn near choked on my coffee.

Allow me  to explain……

A website for Donald and Melania Trump’s personal offices has gone live, promising to preserve “the magnificent legacy of the Trump Administration, while at the same time advancing the America First agenda.” So far, content on 45office.com is thin, USA Today reports. There’s a page with a bio of each of them and forms inviting visitors to “share your thoughts,” “request a greeting,” and invite the former president or his wife to an event. The form asks who else is going to the event, such as media or any “notable attendees,” per CNN. The site also has a series of photos of the Trumps during his term in office.

“Through this office, President Trump will remain a tireless champion for the hardworking men and women of our great country,” the homepage says, per the Hill. Since being removed from social media sites after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the former president has used an email subscriber list when issuing political statements. The effort has been less successful than his Twitter posts were, per USA Today, and Trump might being putting his releases on the new site. An aide said recently that Trump was in talks about starting a site that would “redefine” social media, but there’s been no sign of it yet.

“A tireless champion of heard working men and women….”

Once again coffee spewed across the room.

What legacy?

Perhaps he means the butt kissing of dictators or is it the failed pandemic response or maybe it is the incitement of a riot…..whatcha think?

Have you ever heard such crap?

Closing thought–23Mar21

Have you been missing the moronic even infantile social media posting from that other guy that use to be president?

His daily regurgitation became the meat and fodder for the MSM for 5+ years…..and now all that ‘red meat’ is gone and the media is looking for something new….right now it is violence against Asian-Americans…..but that could change tomorrow…..

The fodder may soon return!

Back to the ‘other guy’ and his cyber bullying…..

Donald Trump is plotting a comeback—to social media. Jason Miller, a senior advisor to the former president, told Fox News on Sunday that Trump is going to launch his own platform in the coming months. “And this is something that I think will be the hottest ticket in social media, it’s going to completely redefine the game, and everybody is going to be waiting and watching to see what exactly President Trump does,” Miller said. Trump, once a prolific tweeter, was permanently booted from that platform following the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and has since “chafed in relative silence at his Mar-a-Lago resort,” per the Guardian. Miller told Fox that Trump has been having “high-powered meetings” about establishing a social media platform and that he has been approached by “numerous companies,” but said that he was unable to provide more details, aside from a prediction that a Trump platform would attract “tens of millions of people.”

How will this effect Twitter and other social media postings?

Some do not think his attempt will be successful….

At issue is the fact that any social media app that’s hoping to gain widespread adoption will have to go through the Apple App Store and Google market for Android apps, which have banned right-wing apps such as Parler after they refused to crack down on violent threats being posted on their networks.

“Given the great amount of interest Mr. Trump’s new network is likely to attract, mainstream tech companies will be anxious to be seen to be avoiding a repeat of the Capitol Hill riot, which was organized in plain sight on the mainstream networks,” writes Williams. “Consequently, any app or website he creates that relies upon conventional web hosting, server farm, bandwidth provider, potential payment processor or distribution methods will be subject to much stricter regulation than will be acceptable to many of Mr. Trump’s supporters.”

Trump Makes Demands Of RNC

Trump is finally attempting to flex those flabby muscles….well at least politically……

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly told the largest GOP fundraising entities to stop using his name. Per CNN, lawyers for Trump recently sent a cease and desist letter to the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, demanding that they stop using his name and likeness on fundraising outreach and merch. The news comes a day after Politico reported that Trump was “furious” over the organizations’ use of his name because it could help some of the Republicans who voted to impeach him following January’s attack on the Capitol.

The groups have not commented on the letter, but a Trump adviser told Politico that Trump’s commitment to the GOP “doesn’t give anyone – friend or foe – permission to use his likeness without explicit approval.” Meanwhile, Trump’s recent reemergence at CPAC might have hinted at where he’d like donations to go instead. In his first speech since leaving office, the former president encouraged loyalists to give directly to him, saying, “There’s only one way to contribute to our efforts to elect ‘America First’ Republican conservatives and, in turn, to make America great again. And that’s through Save America PAC and donaldjtrump.com.”
The RNC has responded to Trump’s demand…..

The Republican National Committee’s reply to former President Trump? Nope. The RNC responded to the cease-and-desist letter it received from Trump’s attorneys by asserting, in its own reply letter, it has the right to use Trump’s name and likeness in its fundraising appeals, and that it has no plans to stop doing so, Politico reports. Trump’s lawyers sent similar letters to the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee, neither of which have yet publicly responded. Trump and the RNC have worked closely together on fundraising in the past, but Trump wants to use the 2022 elections to retaliate against Republicans who he thinks were disloyal to him, and has spoken out against his supporters donating to “RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only), CBS News reports.

Recent RNC fundraising appeals have included lines like “DEFEND President Trump’s America First policies” and “defend President Trump’s legacy.” In its response to the cease-and-desist, the RNC says Trump and RNC chair Ronna McDaniel “enjoy a close relationship, and we understand that President Trump reaffirmed to her over the weekend that he approves of the RNC’s current use of his name in fundraising and other materials, including for our upcoming donor retreat event at Palm Beach at which we look forward to him participating.” Some senior Republicans have speculated the cease-and-desist was not driven by Trump himself but rather those surrounding him. Trump has, however, recently said there’s “only one way” his supporters should be donating money, and that’s by giving directly to him.

This is a small setback for Donald the Orange….but you can bet he is not finished with his attempts to control the party in its entirety……

Trump is attempting to takeover the GOP….(I think it is too late to use the term ‘attempting’)

Donald Trump isn’t happy the Republican Party won’t purge members who haven’t been totally loyal to him. And of late, he’s doing more about it than he did when he’d channel his anger by posting mean tweets.

Days ago, lawyers representing Trump took the extraordinary step of demanding the Republican National Committee (RNC) and other prominent GOP groups cease and desist using Trump’s name and likeness. The RNC denied the request, citing Trump’s status as a public figure, and Trump responded Monday night with a tweet-like statement asking supporters to give to him instead of to the party.

“No money for RINOS,” the statement begins, referring to an acronym for “Republicans in name only,” which for Trump has come to mean anyone who isn’t totally loyal to him.

Will This Be Trump’s Big Day?

How about a little humor to start your day?

Trump will be president!

No this is not some post about 2024…..not at all….this is the newest conspiracy theory flying around that Trump will be president again on this day……will he retake the presidency?

Capitol Police are boosting security in response to a far-right conspiracy theory claiming Donald Trump will again become president on Thursday. Some QAnon supporters believed Trump would declare martial law and remain in office on Jan. 20. But “when that didn’t happen, the date was moved from Jan. 20 to March 4,” the original date on which presidents were sworn into office until the passage of the 20th Amendment in 1933, per ABC News. According to the unfounded theory—which some of QAnon’s own leaders have rejected—no president has been legitimate since the passage of an 1871 law “that secretly turned the United States into a corporation,” per USA Today.

“Now why that’s relevant, God knows. But any rate, now they are thinking maybe we should gather again and storm the Capitol on March 4,” Rep. Adam Smith said last month, per Forbes, which notes some QAnon supporters see a major hike in March 4 rates at the Trump International Hotel as validation of some event. Members of Congress were notified that increased personnel would be deployed on Capitol Hill via a Monday bulletin from the House’s acting sergeant-at-arms, Timothy Blodgett, who noted some have described March 4 as the “true Inauguration Day.” But “the significance of this date has reportedly declined amongst various groups in recent days,” Blodgett wrote. He added Capitol Police have “no indication that groups will travel to Washington DC to protest or commit acts of violence.”

More on this piece of crappy conspiracy…..

If you’re a hardcore QAnon believer, you had high hopes for January.

Among other things, you expected Donald Trump to remain president. You expected mass arrests and public executions. You expected an underground cabal of child-trafficking Democrats to finally be captured.

None of those things happened.

Instead, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. So if you’re one of those people — perhaps millions — who were deeply invested in the various QAnon conspiracy theories, the past few weeks likely produced an immense amount of dissonance.

But for the most die-hard QAnon followers, hope springs eternal! The next big prophecy is supposed to unfold on March 4, which had been Inauguration Day before the ratification of the 20th Amendment in 1933 — and the day Trump will gloriously return to power and retake the White House, according to the febrile imaginings of the QAnon movement.

Can you believe this crap?

Of course we can.

The House has decided to take no chances…..better safe than sorry…as they say.

The House of Representatives has canceled its Thursday session over reports of a possible plot by an “identified militia group” to attempt a repeat of the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol. One Democratic lawmaker tells the Hill that there is “growing concern about threats to the Capitol and Democratic lawmakers in particular tomorrow.” Votes that had been planned for Thursday have been moved to Wednesday, including a police reform bill named in honor of George Floyd, per USA Today. The Capitol Police said in a Wednesday statement: “We have obtained intelligence that shows a possible plot to breach the Capitol by an identified militia group on Thursday, March 4. Our Department is working with our local, state, and federal partners to stop any threats to the Capitol. We are taking the intelligence seriously.”

According to a far-right conspiracy theory, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the country’s 19th president Thursday, per Fox News. The fringe theory is based on the belief that the US secretly became a corporation in 1871, making Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president, the last “real” president of the US. Presidential inaugurations were held on March 4 until 1933, which is why the date is significant to believers of conspiracy theory. There are no reports of the Senate canceling its Thursday session. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin tells USA Today, “In light of what we went through on Jan. 6, it’s understandable that people are concerned,” adding, “I’m not going to second-guess Speaker Pelosi. At this point, Sen. Schumer has not released the same conclusion.”

How stupid can the Trump-ites be?

Golden Idol For Sale

That effigy of Donald the Orange that was on display at CPAC for all the attendees to worship at the feet is now for sale….

The breakout star at the Conservative Political Action Conference taking place in Orlando is from Mexico. A gold, 200-pound statue of former President Trump has drawn a selfie-taking crowd since it arrived in a hotel lobby Thursday evening, CNN reports. As popular as it is, there’s been a backlash even to inanimate Trump. For one thing, there’s some awkwardness to a statue suggesting Trump brings manufacturing jobs back to the US—he’s holding a magic wand, a reference to a quote from former President Obama—being an import. And there’s a religious argument to be made about the sculpture that’s showing up online. Tommy Zegan, an American who lives in Mexico, per the Hill, explained his symbolism. “The coat and tie is the fact that he’s a professional, he’s a businessman,” the artist said. “The red tie symbolizes he’s a Republican. The red, white, and blue is that he’s a patriot. The fact that he’s wearing thongs and shorts is that he’s at the age where he should be retired. He should be at the beach right now.”

Online art and political critics cited the false idol teaching of the Old Testamant, in which Moses destroys a golden calf being worshipped by Israelites in his absence. God’s wrath upon the Israelites followed. Some said Republicans are worshipping a false idol through their loyalty to Trump, who falsely claims to have been reelected, per MarketWatch. “If only there were some sacred text, one most people at CPAC claimed allegiance to, that very explicitly warns against making golden idols,” one tweet said. “I know the biblical definition of an idol,” Zegan answered, per Mediaite. “This is not an idol. This is a sculpture.” The likeness displayed at CPAC’s hotel is just the fiberglass mold of the statue, Zegan said, and it’s for sale for $100,000. He’s got the real stainless steel sculpture in a warehouse in Tampa. The statue took him and helpers six months to make and cost his life savings of $50,000. “It is museum-quality, and that’s the one I’m eventually hoping to get in the Trump library,” Zegan said.

Made in Mexico?

Seriously?

Now who will be the proud owner of the golden idol of the the GOP?

On a side note…I have been waiting for all those religious bloggers to actually say something about this ‘idol’….and yet the sound of crickets prevail.

Place your bids before it is too late.

The Minimum Wage Debate

The biggest debate since the new president too his throne in the ivory tower is that of a raise in the minimum age to $15…..Arkansas’ senator wants to scale it back to $10 per hour….but in Arkansas the minimum wage is $11….so is he trying to back peddle the wage for all including those in his home state of Arkansas.

There are some spineless Democrats that will not go along with people earning a decent wage…..

Senate Democrats are facing internal divisions over efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, which could result in the proposal being watered down or jettisoned from the coronavirus relief bill.

The wage hike is part of President Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief proposal, and it has the support of powerful progressives in both chambers and members of leadership.

But because of the 50-50 Senate split, proponents need to win over every Senate Democrat. That’s setting up a fight over the wage increase as they craft the final version of the relief package.

“I support the increase in the federal minimum wage to the $15 level. I think it’s way overdue that we change it. And I think it would be a good thing to do. There may be other members, even on the Democratic side, who have some concerns about it,” said Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.).

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/537464-minimum-wage-push-sparks-democratic-divisions

The whole minimum wage debate is fake….that simple…..

Capitalism’s “conservative” defenders yet again oppose raising the minimum wage. They fought raising it in the past much as they tried to prevent the Fair Labor Standards Act (1938) that first mandated a U.S. minimum wage. The major argument opponents have used is this: setting or raising a minimum wage threatens small employers. They may collapse or else fire employees; either way, jobs are lost. What is conveniently assumed here is a necessary contradiction between minimum wages and small business jobs. That assumption enables opponents to claim that not setting a legal minimum wage, like not raising it, saves jobs. The system thus presents very poorly paid workers with this choice: low wages or no wages.

“Liberals” in the United States have mostly accepted the assumption of that contradiction, the necessity of that final choice. However, they try to demonstrate that the social gains from a higher minimum wage would exceed the social losses from the reduced employment they admit. Their idea, in effect, is that a higher minimum wage would increase demand for goods and services. Any workers fired because of the minimum wage would be rehired elsewhere to meet the rising demand. Countless empirical studies by conservatives and liberals yield, as usual, correspondingly conflicting conclusions.

The Fake Debate Over a Minimum Wage

With conservs like the Dem Manchin the raise could be in jeopardy…..so if this coward gets his way is there a Plan B to combat the corporate stoolies like Manchin?

The budget tool that Democrats are using to steer Biden’s plan through Congress without GOP support, known as reconciliation, is laden with thorny restrictions waiting to ensnare the $15 minimum wage boost they’ve added to the next tranche of coronavirus relief. The wage increase is also running into strong headwinds from two influential Senate Democratic centrists, Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), who are both resistant to enacting the sweeping policy change through the powerful budget process.

The White House and Democratic leaders have been waiting to see how the Senate’s parliamentarian, its official adviser on procedural matters, opines on the wage increase. Both Democrats and Republicans are expected to meet with the parliamentarian on Wednesday to argue their case. Her ruling could follow soon after the arguments.

In the meantime, Democrats are already weighing several options to try to save the wage hike from fully imploding and make it more palatable for moderates in their own party — from whom congressional leaders need lockstep support in order to muscle the Covid-19 aid package through the Senate with a simple majority vote before unemployment benefits expire for millions of Americans in mid-March.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/22/democrats-minimum-wage-increase-plan-470860

I do not believe that a compromise should be had…..go big and demand people get a living wage….something the Dems have been promising for decades and never come through with a plan.

Impeachment Trial–The Vote

First I would like to wish all my readers a very Happy Valentine’s Day…..

Surprise! Surprise!

Former Pres. Trump has been acquitted in the Senate.

I am aghast!

Who could have seen this coming? (BTW that is sarcasm in case you missed it)

Whiz Bang!

57-43 (a predictable outcome days ago)

The Senate voted Saturday to acquit Donald Trump of inciting insurrection, ending the effort to hold the former president responsible for the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol. Seven Republicans voted with Democrats to convict, the AP reports, providing the largest show of bipartisan support for conviction of any of the four times a president has been impeached. But a two-thirds vote was required for conviction. Without a conviction, per New York Times, Senate Democrats were unable to move to what would have been the next step: voting on whether to disqualify Trump from holding office in the future.

House managers wrapped up their case before the vote by arguing that Trump sparked the Capitol riot in a desperate attempt to stay in office after arguing he lost the November election because of fraud. “If that is not ground for conviction, if that is not a high crime and misdemeanor against the republic and the United States of America, than nothing is,” Rep. Jamie Raskin told his colleagues. Defense lawyer Bruce Castor said Trump didn’t intend to turn loose the rioters: “He wanted them to support primary challenges” to bring about “sweeping election reforms.”

What a complete farce this was.

The Leader of the Senate GOP had something to say about the whole thing…

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a stinging indictment of former President Trump from the Senate floor on Saturday, but not until minutes after the impeachment trial ended in acquittal. Trump was charged with inciting an insurrection in connection with the attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6. “Former President Trump’s actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty,” McConnell said, CNN reports. “Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.” The Republican’s attack was more forceful than many of the floor speeches calling for conviction, the New York Times points out. In what appeared an internal compromise, he basically argued that Trump is guilty, but that the Senate can’t do anything about it because he’s out of office. “A mob was assaulting a Capitol in his name,” McConnell said. “These criminals were carrying his banners, hanging his flags and screaming their loyalty to him.” He pointed out that Trump remains subject to actions in criminal and civil court, per the AP. “He didn’t get away with anything yet,” McConnell said.

Remember these names!

Image

Then it was Pelosi’s turn to mouth off….

At a press conference after the trial, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attacked the 43 of 50 GOP senators who voted to acquit Trump. “What we saw in that Senate today was a cowardly group of Republicans who apparently have no options, because they were afraid to defend their job, respect the institution in which they serve,” she said, per the Washington Post. The Democrat said she was unimpressed with the minority leader’s speech after the vote, saying it was McConnell who ensured the trial wouldn’t begin until Trump had left the White House. Democrats defended the House managers’ back-and-forth on whether to call witnesses. “We could have had 5,000 witnesses, and Mitch McConnell would be giving the same speech,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the lead manager. As the trial ended, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also criticized the other party. “Just look at what Republicans have been forced to defend,” he said, per the AP. “Look at what Republicans have chosen to forgive.”

AS one would think….the King Snake came out of his hidey hole and thump his chest like some sex crazed baboon….

Former President Trump welcomed victory in his Senate impeachment trial on Saturday, suggesting he’s not finished politically. “This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country,” Trump said in a statement. “No president has ever gone through anything like it.” He did not include a condemnation of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack that prompted his impeachment or apolotize for anything, the Washington Post reports. The Senate acquitted Trump of one article of impeachment, inciting insurrection, on a 57-43 vote. Seven Republican senators voted to convict. In his statement, Trump blamed Democrats, per Politico, calling it “a sad commentary” that one party “is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree.”

With the impeachment trial over, Trump hinted at a return to the political spotlight in his statement, issued shortly after the Senate’s vote. “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to make America Great Again has only just begun,” he said. “In the months ahead, I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all our people. There has never been anything like it!” Trump didn’t say anything specific about his plans. He also thanked his lawyers, after being critical of them earlier in the week.

It is mercifully over except for the endless analysis by the media.

Impeachment Trial–Day 4

I try to avoid the “news of the day” on weekends but sometimes there are reports that need exposure and this is one of this situations.

Sorry guys put I try to be brief yet informative and this subject prohibits me from brevity.

A long read but packed with information, please take the time to educate yourself…..some may say that it is TMI….but this situations calls for TMI.

The House has wrapped up their portion of the case…..it is time for the rambling babbling defense team to stand up and make the case that Trump has committed no crime against the country.

Not to worry for any Trumpites that remain here….matters not the evidence….the GOP Senators for the most part are not unbiased and open to the facts.

Why do I say this?

Former President Trump’s second impeachment trial appears destined to end the same way his first did: with an acquittal. House managers rested their case Thursday, day No. 3 of trial No. 2, and the New York Times reports most Republican senators appeared to remain unconvinced. The paper deems it unlikely that the required two-thirds of the Senate will vote to convict. Only a few GOP senators are seen as likely to vote against Trump (Vox has the six to watch here; the Hill has its own look at them here), and even Democratic senators were starting to signal it was time to wrap things up. Both parties appear to support a plan that would quickly end it, with Trump’s lawyers planning a three- to four-hour presentation Friday with Q&A following, and a final vote then coming as early as Saturday.

Technically, as CNN reports, his defense team has 16 hours over two days to present its case, after which senators are allowed to ask questions of both teams. Then the teams debate over whether to subpoena witnesses and documents, after which a vote is taken on that matter, but the House managers don’t appear likely to ask for that. Four hours of closing arguments are allowed before senators deliberate and then vote. Republican senators are largely explaining their votes to acquit via their reasoning that the trial itself is unconstitutional; in the Washington Post, Georgetown law professor and former DC prosecutor Paul Butler explains why even senators who voted against holding the trial on those grounds should still vote to convict or acquit based on the merits of the case itself. Trump, who is confident he will be acquitted, was seen golfing in Florida Thursday

This is just typical these days….if the party tells you what to do then by God you had better do it.

Another example where party politics outweighs the Constitution…..

First here is the brief filed by lawyers for former President Donald Trump filed a 78-page brief

Onto the Trump defense….

Defense lawyers for former President Trump wrapped up their arguments in his impeachment trial Friday, making the case that Trump cannot be held responsible for the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Senators then had a question-and-answer session with lawyers from both sides, and they are now on track to vote on Saturday. Highlights from the Trump team’s defense:

  • Attorney Michael van der Veen dismissed the trial as a “blatantly unconstitutional act of political vengeance,” per the Washington Post. He also used the phrases “appalling abuse of the Constitution” and “constitutional cancel culture,” per the AP.
  • Trump didn’t incite the rioters, he insisted. Yes, the former president urged supporters to “fight like hell,” but that was metaphorical, said van der Deen, per the Hill. “Countless politicians have spoken of fighting for our principles,” he added. “Joe Biden’s slogan was ‘battle for the soul’ of America. No one believes that the use of this political terminology was incitement of political violence.”
  • He also played video clips of Democrats urging on protesters during the civil unrest over the summer. For example, Democratic Rep. Ayanna Presley was shown saying, “There needs to be unrest in the streets for as long as there is unrest in our lives.” Said van der Deen: “Democratic politicians endorsed and encouraged the riots that destroyed vast swaths of American cities last summer.”
  • Trump’s team also showed clips of Democratic lawmakers using the word “fight” repeatedly, though without context, per the AP. “You didn’t do anything wrong” in using the word, Trump attorney David Schoen told the senators. “But, please, stop the hypocrisy.” A separate AP story notes that Democrats mostly chuckled and whispered to themselves at the video attempting to equate what they said to Trump’s statements. “Donald Trump was warned, if you don’t stop talking about a stolen election, people will be killed,” said Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine during a break. “He was specifically warned that. He kept talking about it, and a violent mob attacked the Capitol and seven people are dead who would be alive today, had he just followed their advice. That’s what I thought about those videos.”
  • Attorney Bruce Castor says what happened at the Capitol was not an insurrection. “Insurrection is a term of art defined in the law,” he said. “It involves taking over a country, a shadow government, taking the TV stations over and having some playing what you’re going to do when you finally take power. Clearly, this is not that.” The impeachment charge alleges “incitement of insurrection.”
  • Castor’s closing pitch: “All of these facts make clear the January 6th speech did not cause the riots. The president did not cause the riots. He neither explicitly or implicitly encouraged the use of violence or lawless action.” Instead, Castor he noted that Trump told supporters to “peacefully and patriotically” march to the Capitol.

Trump’s lawyers admonished the Dems for taking videos out of context then they set about doing the same thing.

My worry is that the Dems left out all the GOPers that have been enabling Trump for years…..why do they get a free ride?

Okay let’s look at the points of the case….the main point is that Trump is no longer president and therefore the trial is unconstitutional…..but wait!  There is a precedent….

The year is 1876 and the former Secretary of War Belknap was tried in the Senate after he had left office….a little background will be helpful right?

An impeachment trial for a secretary of war occupied much of the Senate’s time during May 1876.

At issue was the behavior of William Belknap, war secretary in the administration of President Ulysses Grant. A former Iowa state legislator and Civil War general, Belknap had held his cabinet post for nearly eight years. In the rollicking era that Mark Twain dubbed the Gilded Age, Belknap was famous for his extravagant Washington parties and his elegantly attired first and second wives. Many questioned how he managed such a grand lifestyle on his $8,000 government salary.

By early 1876, answers began to surface. A House of Representatives committee uncovered evidence supporting a pattern of corruption blatant even by the standards of the scandal-tarnished Grant administration.

The trail of evidence extended back to 1870. In that year, Belknap’s luxury-loving first wife assisted a wheeler-dealer named Caleb Marsh by getting her husband to select one of Marsh’s associates to operate the lucrative military trading post at Fort Sill in Indian territory. Marsh’s promise of generous kickbacks prompted Secretary Belknap to make the appointment. Over the next five years, the associate funneled thousands of dollars to Marsh, who provided Belknap regular quarterly payments totaling over $20,000.

On March 2, 1876, just minutes before the House of Representatives was scheduled to vote on articles of impeachment, Belknap raced to the White House, handed Grant his resignation, and burst into tears.

This failed to stop the House. Later that day, members voted unanimously to send the Senate five articles of impeachment, charging Belknap with “criminally disregarding his duty as Secretary of War and basely prostituting his high office to his lust for private gain.”

The Senate convened its trial in early April, with Belknap present, after agreeing that it retained impeachment jurisdiction over former government officials. During May, the Senate heard more than 40 witnesses, as House managers argued that Belknap should not be allowed to escape from justice simply by resigning his office.

On August 1, 1876, the Senate rendered a majority vote against Belknap on all five articles. As each vote fell short of the necessary two-thirds, however, he won acquittal. Belknap was not prosecuted further; he died in 1890.

But if that is not enough then here is more info for those that pretend this is unconstitutional….

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-HPREC-HINDS-V3/html/GPO-HPREC-HINDS-V3-26.htm

So yes he, Trump, can be tried.

Next the incitement thing….or as they want us to believe the First Amendment thing…..Free speech to be exact…..

Freedom of speech does not mean the freedom to have “all” speech.
The concept behind the freedom of speech is that you should be able to express anything in a way that does not create legal consequences for you. Even if your opinion is unsavory, rude, or unpopular, this right gives you the option to express it. In the United States, there are four forms of speech which are not protected under the First Amendment.

Freedom of speech can incite violence against other people.
People must be held responsible for the personal choices that they make. When someone commits an act of violence against another because they were incited by hate speech to do so, then they made the choice to break the law. The person who created the outcome through the encouragement of their language holds some responsibility here as well. If online radicalization causes people to join ISIS, then shouldn’t political radicalization that causes individuals to attack journalists be treated in the same way?

Freedom of speech can incite violence against other people.
People must be held responsible for the personal choices that they make. When someone commits an act of violence against another because they were incited by hate speech to do so, then they made the choice to break the law. The person who created the outcome through the encouragement of their language holds some responsibility here as well. If online radicalization causes people to join ISIS, then shouldn’t political radicalization that causes individuals to attack journalists be treated in the same way?

Freedom of speech creates a paradox.
When we look at the modern idea that creates the foundation for freedom of speech, it really isn’t free. The government is still dictating some of the things that we can or cannot say. This freedom, and this writer, cannot exist if people are not allowed to make assertions that are distasteful to the majority, even if the statements are hurtful to other people.

Does any of that look familiar?

We now await the vote.

Any takers om whether he is acquitted?

Reemergence And Retribution

As the Senate Trial of Trump is entering the final stage……Americans hold their breath waiting for the outcome…but they are not alone…..

He, Trump, is waiting in the shadows for now….waiting for the end of the trial….waiting for the chance to reemerge and doll out his retribution…..

He being Donald the Orange.

He is waiting to consolidate is iron grip on the GOP….and then he can doll out retribution on all those that he perceives as disloyal.

Only logical because he did so as president to those people that within the GOP that did not give him the support he thought he deserved.

He will step out of the shadows after te trial and return to his former self.

Now, heading into what could have been an historic bipartisan rebuke, the former president and his team are confident both of his acquittal and that he’ll come out of the trial with his influence over the Republican party all but cemented.

“He’s Teflon, right. It’s been a month since the Capitol riot and I would say, for the most part, the GOP has coalesced back behind him,” said a former Trump campaign official.

Already, Trump aides contend, the impeachment process has proved beneficial to the ex-president — exposing disloyalty within the party’s ranks and igniting grassroots backlash against Republicans who have attempted to nudge the GOP base away from Trump. Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse spent last week fending off constituent criticisms and censures from state party officials after he compared Trumpism to “a civic cancer for the nation.” And Trump’s allies believe the ex-president’s impending impeachment trial will further illuminate who the turncoats are.

“It’s going to help expose more bad apples that he can primary if any senators vote to convict,” added the former campaign official.

We all know that the day of reckoning is approach and soon he will exact his retribution on those that wronged him.

Will his antics finally drive that last nail inn the coffin of the GOP?

Some say yes….but I say NO way…..this is the GOP of today and the amount of supporters show their popularity with the people.

Be prepared for more Trumpian antics……he will NOT be silenced.

Impeachment Trial–Day 3

And the beat goes on…..

More evidence presentation by the House……

Once again the House managers presented a compelling case….compelling to anyone with a spine and half a mind……

The House impeachment managers wrapped up their case against former President Trump on Thursday, arguing that rioters who descended on the Capitol did so because they were obeying the president. One repeated sentiment from the day is expressed in this quote from Rep. Joe Neguse: “We humbly, humbly ask you to convict President Trump for the crime for which he is overwhelmingly guilty of. Because if you don’t, if we pretend this didn’t happen, or worse, if we let it go unanswered, who’s to say it won’t happen again?” Trump’s defense team will begin its defense on Friday. Some highlights from Thursday:

  • Rep. Diana DeGette said the rioters on Jan. 6 were following Trump’s directives. “Their own statements before, during and after the attack make clear the attack was done for Donald Trump, at his instructions and to fulfill his wishes,” she said, per USA Today. “Donald Trump had sent them there.” DeGette displayed quotes and interviews from those who participated to that effect. “They said so,” she said, per Politico. “They were invited here. They were invited by the president of the United States.”
  • Rep. Jamie Raskin, the lead manager, warned senators that if Trump is not impeached, the US could see a repeat of the Jan. 6 violence, reports the Washington Post. “Is there any political leader in this room who believes that if he is ever allowed by the Senate to get back into the Oval Office, Donald Trump would stop inciting violence to get his way?” he asked. “Would you bet the lives of more police officers on that? Would you bet the safety of your family on that? Would you bet the future of your democracy on that?”
  • Raskin also asserted that Trump has a history of inciting violence that predates the riot. He used clips of Trump encouraging backers to rough up anti-Trump protesters at rallies and accused Trump of rhetoric that contributed to an alleged plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor. Managers frequently cited Trump’s own words and tweets to make similar points. DeGette, for instance, said Trump inflamed domestic extremist groups. “This must be our wake-up call,” she said. “We must condemn it, because the threat is not over. President Trump refused to condemn this type of violence. Instead, over and over again, he’s encouraged it. Our response must be different this time.”
  • Rep. Ted Lieu faulted Trump for a “lack of remorse” in the aftermath of the riot, per the Hill. He also echoed a point made by Raskin. “You know, I’m not afraid of Donald Trump running again in four years,” Lieu said, per the New York Times. “I’m afraid he’s going to run again and lose, because he can do this again.”
  • Raskin said Trump can’t use the First Amendment for protection. “President Trump is not even close to the proverbial citizen who falsely shouted fire in a crowded theater,” he said, per the Wall Street Journal. “He is like the now-proverbial municipal fire chief who incites a mob to go set the theater on fire, and not only refuses to put out the fire, but encourages the mob to keep going as the blaze spreads.”

That wrapped up the House case…..now it will move on to the defense team…..

But before they present their case the Trump lawyers met with some senators in private before they begin (think about that for a moment)…..

Dismissing the appearance of conflict—and again demonstrating that an impeachment trial is unlike any other—President Trump’s lawyers met with three of his jurors Thursday afternoon to plan strategy. The meeting was “just very nice,” said David Schoen, one of the lawyers, the Washington Post reports. Trump supporters and Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz huddled in a room in the Capitol with the lawyers after the trial adjourned for the day. Calling the senators “friendly guys,” Schoen said the group was “talking about procedure.” Republicans have been critical of the Trump lawyers’ performance so far. Schoen said the senators didn’t tell him what questions they’ll ask during the trial. The discussion was about “just how this format goes, you know, the question-and-answer period, all that,” he said.

On the other hand, Cruz said after the meeting that they were “discussing their legal strategy and sharing our thoughts.” Few senators of either party appear to be undecided, but when they’re sworn in as jurors, they vow to administer “impartial justice” in the case. The three senators were following the example of their leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell, who had promised Senate Republicans’ “total cooperation” with the defense team during Trump’s first impeachment trial. Schoen said the meeting Thursday was appropriate, per CNN. “I think it’s the best practice here in impeachment,” he said, suggesting the bar is low. “There’s nothing about this thing that has any semblance of due process whatsoever.” Cruz said: “I think the end result of this impeachment trial is crystal clear to everybody. Donald Trump will be acquitted.”

This is a perfect example of just what a sham this trial is turning into…..when do jurors tutor the lawyers?

Minds are made up….evidence means nothing to these spineless slugs.

Friday will be the day that we get to see just what the defense has to say…..the first amendment will be front and center.  (We can talk about that later)
