A National Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has always been a day for doing the thing that it is entitled……giving thanks…..

And as usual the Old Professor wants to add some history to your day of rest and good food……

Thanksgiving is a peculiar holiday, at least in the modern world. Its roots are religious, and the American nation is, at least in law, secular.   Its very name speaks of thanks, or gratitude, and gratitude is an ancient virtue.  Indeed Aristotle speaks highly of it.  Even so, or perhaps for that reason, it is very American.  In his Thanksgiving address in 1922, President Coolidge called it “perhaps the most characteristic of our national observances.”   He was not wrong for, as Chesterton wrote, America is “a nation with the soul of a church,” and Abraham Lincoln called us an “almost chosen people.”

The holiday reminds us, in other words, of the peculiar character of the American nation, and of the President’s role in it.  Strictly speaking, to be an American is to be an American citizen.  When one calls someone an American, the first definition one usually has in mind is political.   By contrast, when one says that someone is Chinese or Turkish, the first thought is of an ethnic or racial identity.  Even so, there is an American culture.  Hence it is very common to say that something is “very American.”  Thanksgiving itself deserves that moniker.   Is it a constitutional observance?  That’s an open question.

I would like to give thanks to all my followers, visitors and commenters…..I never thought that this project would be up and running after 12 years……I started my blog on Blogger (no compensation) it was titled “Studies and Observations” after about 18  months a switched over to Word Press and change the title to “In Saner Thought” which was the title of a self-published book of poetry of mine in the 1970s…..

I will do very little today but cook and then go to my daughter’s house for the meal…..turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, Made from scratch Mac and Cheese, green bean casserole, green peas, cranberry sauce (jellied not whole berry) bread and gravy with peach cobbler for dessert……and after the meal we will sit around the table in their garden and drink a bit of sherry and/or brandy……I would play golf but I would rather have my toes removed one at a time……NO!  I will sit on my ass and enjoy the day and my granddaughter…..

So thank you every one……I cannot express my appreciation for you all in mere words….

Let us not forget about our troops that are fighting endless wars and that are away from their families on this day for families…..give thanx that they are on duty and on watch……

Veterans Day–2018

To start our president cancels a visit to a WW1 American cemetery…..

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump cancelled their trip to the Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in France on Saturday due to “scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather.”

The details: The Trumps were scheduled to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony and moment of silence, the Independent reports, to commemorate the more than 2,000 U.S. soldiers that died there during World War I. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau all went ahead with plans to visit World War I memorials. According to the White House, Chief of Staff General John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joe Dunford would visit in their place.

Screw the American dead….his hair is more important.

This year the true Veterans Day falls on a Sunday so the holiday will be observed on Monday, 12Nov18.

I send a shout out to all veterans on this day and to say a heart felt THANK YOU…..your sacrifices will be remember by me and my family forever.

Keeping with a small tradition here on IST I post a video of the unit I served in while in Vietnam for 2 and half years….I was a LRRP for the 9th Division…..

It is a lengthy video but well worth the view.

Even though the LRRPs were absorbed by the Rangers….I care not I was a LRRP then and will die a LRRP.

For your musical delight I shall leave you with the songs of my time…..

I leave you now….I have things that must be done on this day….thanx for all your support and I appreciate each and every one of my followers.

Peace Out!

Memorial Day–2018

Closing Thought–28May18

Today is the day set aside to remember our dead from the many wars we have fought…..I take this opportunity to tell my readers a little something of myself and my service.

I served 2 and half years in Southeast Asia…..most of that time I was a LRRP…..a recon patrol for the 9th Infantry Division Mekong Delta, Republic of South Vietnam……the US Army in their infinite wisdom decided that the LRRPs were so successful that they would incorporate them into the 75th Regt the Rangers so from that point on the LRRPs are wrapped up with the history of the Rangers…but this idea was a bad one (my opinion)…..LRRPs worked in 4, 5 or 6 man teams and when the Rangers took over they wanted 8 man teams…got a lot of LRRPs killed because the team dynamic is different from 6 and 8 members……I will die a LRRP I did not want to be a Ranger in 1968 and that has not changed today….I do not care about the “coolness” of the Rangers…I [prefer to die a LRRP.

For those people that are not sure about LRRPs there is a documentary made on us…it tells our story well…..

Below is the photo of the gun I carried in Vietnam…..a .45 cal “Burp Gun”….since I carried a .45 pistol and the Burp was .45 I had to carry only one ammo….saved time and space on long missions.

Everyone please take a moment to remember our fallen countrymen in our many wars…..

This will be my only post today for I have a family I will spend time with……

Peace Out!

Closing Thought–15Jan18

Today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther king, Jr…..his speeches lead to the Civil Rights Movement that to the freedoms we all have finally given to black people….

This is a forgotten speech of MLK from 1964…….

In a Democracy Now! and Pacifica Radio Archives exclusive, we air a newly discovered recording of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On December 7, 1964, days before he received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, King gave a major address in London on segregation, the fight for civil rights and his support for Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. The speech was recorded by Saul Bernstein, who was working as the European correspondent for Pacifica Radio. Bernstein’s recording was recently discovered by Brian DeShazor, director of the Pacifica Radio Archives.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X met only once. On March 26, 1964, the two black leaders were on Capitol Hill, attending Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

King was stepping out of a news conference, when Malcolm X, dressed in an elegant black overcoat and wearing his signature horn-rimmed glasses, greeted him.

New Years Eve–2017

The year is all but a memory and I would like to thank all my followers and commenters for their continued patronage and for making 2017 an excellent year for IST.

It has been a helluva a year….the election of a president without the popular vote…..the systematic tear down of the institution that we Americans have come to depend on….the total destruction of our diplomatic endeavors….a year where autocrats were praised and democracy takes a back seat to personal gain….a year of fake news and a year of accusations…..

Now we look forward to the new year, 2018, that is……and most of us have little what to expect….will the country destroy itself from the inside or will it finally come to its senses?

Here is a little help with the expectation thing…..

The world is on edge. North Korea is threatening war. No one knows what Donald Trump will do next. And deeper forces of disruption are at work, from fake news to cryptocurrencies. With that in mind, welcome to the latest edition of the Pessimist’s Guide…to 2028. It’s an attempt not just to look at the potential shocks of next year but also to consider how they could shape the coming decade. The scenarios outlined here are not meant as forecasts. Instead, they are provocative ideas intended to make you think about how quickly our world is changing.

Merry Christmas–2017

Or if you prefer Happy Holidays……

It is that time again……a time for family, friends and food.

I would like to thank all my regulars for their time and their comments and I hope all have a very merry Christmas.

We all have lofty desires for a Christmas gift and I am NO different.

Mine as a combat vet is that I want an end to wars…..I spend a lot of my time writing posts that point out the absurdness and obscenity of war…..I read an op-ed that sums it up nicely…..

All I want for Christmas is for the US to only fight the wars it has to and to stay out of all the others. The lives of young Americans are too high a price to pay for wars driven by threat inflation, ego, or foolhardy social experiments.

First, we’re Americans. Enough of the hand-wringing. Islamist-inspired terrorists do not hide around every corner. Instead, we have been and continue to be quite safe. The threat from groups operating within failed states like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and so on pales in comparison to Hitler’s armies marching across Europe and our nuclear Cold War with the Soviet Union, despite President Trump’s attempts to equate the three.

May you have the peace and joy of the season…..and I hope all enjoys food, family and fun during this day of days……chuq

Christmas Eve–2017

It is the day before Christmas and all through the house….the presents are wrapped and under the tree…..family members are starting to arrive for the big day…..food has been bought and waiting for the stove…..now what to do?  Gather the family…….Pop some popcorn and settle back and watch a Christmas classic….”It’s A Wonderful Life”.

Did you know that in 1946 the FBI was thinking that the movie offered up some hidden “Communist” ideals?

As the Smithsonian Magazine points out, an unnamed FBI agent in 1946 filed a report after watching the film, in which he called the movie “entertaining,” but warned of that it contained themes and tropes that could be used to promote communism.

According to scholar John A. Noakes, the agent identified “a malignant undercurrent in the film” that he alleged “employed two common tricks used by Communists to inject propaganda into the film.”

It’s A Wonderful Life bombed at the box office before becoming a Christmas classic. Along the way, it also caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The movie’s preview showing at New York’s Globe Theater took place on this day in 1946, a day before the movie opened to the public. “Though it has become a quintessential American classic, It’s a Wonderful Life was not an immediate hit with audiences,” writes Jennifer M. Wood for Mental Floss. The film’s producer and director, Frank Capra, ended up $25,000 in debt. In spite of this, Capra said he thought the tale of a suicidal man and his guardian angel was “the greatest film I ever made.”

Have a great day my friends…..chuq

Closing Thought–23Dec17

It is Saturday and I will post just a closing thought…..It is a couple of days before the Big Day which is just around the corner…….

As Christmas approaches keep in mind that there are some that have neither home nor food on this season of joy…..and it is getting worse…….

The nation’s homeless population increased this year for the first time since 2010, driven by a surge in the number of people living on the streets in Los Angeles and other West Coast cities. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development released its annual Point-in-Time count Wednesday, a report that showed nearly 554,000 homeless people across the country during local tallies conducted in January, per the AP. That figure is up nearly 1% from 2016. Of that total, 193,000 people had no access to nightly shelter and instead were staying in vehicles, tents, the streets, and other places considered uninhabitable. The unsheltered figure is up by more than 9% compared with two years ago.

Increases are higher in several West Coast cities, where the explosion in homelessness has prompted at least 10 city and county governments to declare states of emergency since 2015. City officials, homeless advocates, and those living on the streets point to a main culprit: the region’s booming economy. Rents have soared beyond affordability for many lower-wage workers who until just a few years ago could typically find a place to stay. While the overall homeless population in California, Oregon, and Washington grew by 14% over the past two years, the part of that population considered unsheltered climbed 23%, to 108,000. That’s in part due a shortage of affordable housing. The AP has more.

This thieving bastard that some Americans helped elect has given homeless vets a Christmas present early…..

Donald Trump, from the outset, cast himself as a champion of veterans, and promised that he would improve veterans care as president.

But the toxic right-wing ideology of Trump and his administration has nonetheless seeped into the way they take care of and prioritize veterans.

According to Politico, a popular program to house homeless veterans is on the chopping block — and at the worst possible moment:

Four days after Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin held a big Washington event to tout the Trump administration’s promise to house all homeless vets, the agency did an about-face, telling advocates it was pulling resources from a major housing program.

The VA said it was essentially ending a special $460 million program that has dramatically reduced homelessness among chronically sick and vulnerable veterans. Instead, the money would go to local VA hospitals that can use it as they like, as long as they show evidence of dealing with homelessness.

Anger exploded on a Dec. 1 call that was arranged by Shulkin’s Advisory Committee on Homeless Veterans to explain the move. Advocates for veterans, state officials and even officials from HUD, which co-sponsors the program, attacked the decision, according to five people who were on the call.

Donate your time or to a food bank or homeless shelter…..anything that can help make this season a little better for those that have nothing.

Remember what the spirit of the holiday is all about…..and try to help when you can.

Peace and joy

Closing Thought–22Dec17

Happy Holidays!  Or do you prefer Merry Christmas?  Why?

It is that time of the year when there will be that silly notion that there is a war on Christmas…..a story that flows around the net because Right wings are just plain moronic.

Seriously…..what does it matter if people say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?  As long as people truly mean it then it matters not….that is unless you watch FOX News then you probably are foaming at the mouth about now……

How about a little history to go with your day…..(of course you knew that history lesson was lurking in my words, right?)…..

It’s the most wonderful fight of the year: the annual tussle between Christians who bravely defend “Merry Christmas” and the godless liberals who want to impose “Happy Holidays” on all of us. Or so the story goes on talk radio. But while President Trump promises to restore “Merry Christmas” to American life, those who insist on using the phrase as a sort of flag for conservative Christian culture misunderstand its history. Rather than religious, its origins are secular and commercial, even profane.

For most of its history, the Christian church regarded Christmas as a small event on its calendar not requiring much observation. Puritans in England and later the American colonies went one step further, banning the holiday altogether since they could find no biblical support for celebrating the day. As the historian Stephen Nissenbaum has explained, the Puritans imposed fines on anyone caught celebrating and designated Christmas as a working day. These strict rules were necessary since so many men and women engaged in the drunken carousing that accompanied winter solstice festivities, an ancient tradition that the church had failed to stamp out when it appropriated Dec. 25 as a Christian holiday.
