Why Does Mother Nature Hate Haiti?

I ask this question because of a 7.2 earthquake has hit Haiti (again)…..

Crews in Haiti were trying Saturday to reach people trapped in the rubble after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck in the morning, killing at least 304 people. At least 1,800 are injured, the government said. As rescuers worked, at least six aftershocks shook the region, one of which was magnitude 5.1. An American Red Cross spokeswoman said there’s “significant damage to homes, roads, and infrastructure,” CNN reports. Hospitals were overwhelmed in at least two cities, per the New York Times; Les Cayes and Jeremie reported serious destruction. “There are a lot of people coming in—a lot of people,” said a hospital administrator in Jeremie. “We don’t have enough supplies.” Phone lines were down in Petit Trou de Nippes, the quake’s epicenter, so the damage there was unknown. Haiti was already dealing with a political crisis, after its president was assassinated last month. In addition, UN agencies report acute or severe food insecurity among 46% of the population, among the highest percentages in the world.

Witnesses described, and videos showed, a chaotic situation as people fled their homes when the earthquake hit. “Many houses fell. Many people are trapped under the rubble,” said a resident of Les Cayes. “We can hear people screaming under the rubble.” Among the difficulties relief crews face is having to reach devastated areas by air because gangs control a main road, per the Washington Post. The small airstrip in Les Cayes already can’t accommodate the relief efforts. “There isn’t a lot of capacity in that area to handle assistance,” a spokesperson for Mercy Corps said. Relief agencies and UN officials are flying over Haiti’s west and south to assess the damage. The US Geological Survey quickly predicted casualties will be high; the earthquake released about twice as much energy as one that killed more than 200,000 people in 2010. The government has declared a state of emergency that will be in effect for a month.

Keep in mind the earthquake of 2009 was only 7.0……

But I ask the question in the title because Haiti has been the site of several natural disasters since 2009…..

  • 20 October: heavy rain in the Haitian capital and its suburbs. Carrefour, in the southern suburbs, was completely flooded.
  • 12 January: the magnitude 7.0 2010 Haiti earthquake which occurred on 12 at 16:53, local time. The earthquake killed between 100,000 and 316,000 people. Its epicentre was at approximately 25 km from Port-au-Prince, the capital. A dozen secondary shocks of magnitudes ranging from 5.0 to 5.9 were registered during the hours which followed. It was one of the deadliest earthquakes ever recorded.
  • 20 January: A second earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred on 20 January 2010 at 06:03 local time. Its epicentre was at approximately 59 km west of Port-au-Prince, and at least 10 km beneath the surface.
  • 20 October: A Cholera epidemic hit outside of Port-au-Prince, killing at least 3,597 and sickening over 340,000.
  • 5 November: Hurricane Tomas hits and kills at least 10 Haitians causing damage and worsening the cholera epidemic.
  • 24 October: Hurricane Sandy passes just west of Haiti, delivering heavy rainfall and leaving some areas with catastrophic flooding. At least 108 people were killed and 21 were left missing. Around 200,000 people were left homeless as of October 29.
  • 3–4 October: Hurricane Matthew hits Haiti with catastrophic flooding of up to 40 inches and storm surge of up to 10 feet. At least 580 people were killed and more than 35,000 left homeless by the storm.
  • 6 October: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 11.7km occurred at 20:11 local time killing 12 people and injuring 188. Damage was mainly recorded in the far north of the island as stated by the Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant.

  • 14 August: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Southwestern Haiti. It’s epicenter was about 10 km from Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, approximately 150 km (93 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital. The quake left behind significant damage. Tsunami warnings were immediately issued as several small tsunami waves struck surrounding areas. The death toll has risen to 304, but is expected to grow.
  • Now Haiti is in the path of Tropical Storm Grace

Haitians are bracing for another disaster that could pile onto a death count that’s already surpassed 300 in the aftermath of Saturday’s earthquake. Per NBC News, Tropical Storm Grace looks likely to batter the ailing island nation later this week. Per CNN, all of Haiti is under a tropical storm watch as Grace approaches with sustained winds currently clocking in at 40mph. Much of the Dominican Republic, to Haiti’s east, is under a tropical storm warning.

Let’s not forget the coup attempt in August against the president of the country….more social disaster…..

Now do you see why I ask that question?

A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On

The cold snap has left us Southerners with a bit of a shiver……normally we in the Deep South do not suffer from the bone chilling weather that most the country has to endure…..and we do not suffer quietly.

My garden is only a memory from the summer…..at least the wide array of birds are still visiting and makes it seem like Spring…..

Sorry I was babbling on but it is Sunday and what better day to go on aimlessly?

Now we get to the good stuff……..

Sunday and I have some sad news for the world……looks like that next year, 2018, is going to be a bad year for earthquakes……17 to 20 major quakes of 7.0 or higher magnitude……

Two geologists may have spotted a surprisingly simple correlation that can help predict earthquakes—and if they’re correct, the Earth is on track for an uptick in major quakes next year. The pair pored over a century’s worth of a data on earthquakes and detected a pattern: When the Earth’s rotation slows, as it does periodically, the slowdown is followed by an increase in quakes with a magnitude of 7 or greater, reports the Guardian. Their research, published in Geophysical Research Letters, has been well-received in the field, and it will be put to the test soon. The rotational slowdowns typically happen over five years, and the last began four years ago. Meaning, we can expect to see two to five more major earthquakes than normal in 2018, or 17 to 20, reports Science.

“The Earth offers us a five-years’ heads up on future earthquakes, which is remarkable,” says Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado, who detected the correlation with Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana. Exactly where the quakes will take place is fuzzier, but typically the increase shows up in regions along the Equator. The researchers aren’t sure how to explain all this, but one theory is that it involves nearly imperceptible changes in the flow of molten iron in the Earth’s core. That might be enough to slow down the Earth’s spin a millisecond or two, a difference that can be measured by atomic clocks, and perhaps result in the release of vast amounts of energy underground. The cycle seems to take place about every three decades, writes geologist Trevor Nace at Forbes. (LA residents won’t like this San Andreas prediction.)

WE do not need more major disasters for our president has NO idea how to handle these disasters…..Puerto Rico proved that all to shamefully.  We can only pray that Arizona will not become beach front property.

Sunday is over and I will withdraw to my room and read and write……

Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On

Here we have hurricanes and we know when they will hit but California has earthquakes and few know for sure when they will pop up and shake the crap out of the state.

There is a small one almost everyday in California and in the past have had some butt busting ‘quakes and many seem to think that a really big one is not far off……

It’s the most well-known US fault, but the San Andreas Fault’s southern section hasn’t been behind a major earthquake since a 7.9-magnitude temblor in 1857—and that’s got Thomas Jordan worried, the Los Angeles Times reports. “The springs on the San Andreas system have been wound very, very tight,” Jordan, the director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, told Wednesday’s National Earthquake Conference. “And the southern San Andreas fault, in particular, looks like it’s locked, loaded, and ready to go.” The area (which includes Los Angeles on its periphery) is due for a major quake, Jordan says, adding it’s imperative Southern California continue to prepare, following the example of LA in pushing quake retrofits for buildings, as well as protecting telecommunications and water systems. “An earthquake on the San Andreas would really affect all of Southern California,” said Jordan’s SCEC colleague, Mark Benthien, per CBS Los Angeles.

In tectonics-speak, the San Andreas Fault—which Curbed Los Angeles calls a “ticking … time bomb”—is where the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate meet, and the Pacific Plate is shifting northwest of the North American one at a rate of 16 feet or so every century, ScienceAlert notes. That’s a lot of tension that needs to be released, which would be devastating: A 2008 USGS study found a 7.8-magnitude quake on the San Andreas Fault’s southern portion could cause 1,800 fatalities, 50,000 injuries, and $200 billion in damage. Other parts of the fault have also remained dormant even longer, including in San Bernardino County (no major shakeup since 1812) and near the Salton Sea, more or less steady since the late 1600s. “We are fortunate that seismic activity in California has been relatively low over the past century,” Jordan said last year. “But we know that tectonic forces are continually tightening the springs … making big quakes inevitable.”

Buy some desert land in western Arizona…..for one day it will be beachfront property…

What The Frack Is Going On?

Since the “drill baby drill” people have passed on to the new wave of “exploration”….fracking…..there has been many reports that tell of a disaster in the making and just as many people coming out of the woodwork to defend this type of oil search……we all have heard the stories about the methane leaks, the pollution problems, and now it is earthquakes…….

Earthquakes in Oklahoma are up more than a hundredfold in recent years, and a new study spies a pretty clear link between the shaking and the fracking that has given the state’s economy a huge boost. Researchers took a close look at four specific sites where wastewater from oil and gas extraction was injected into the ground and found that the process could be linked to swarms of quakes in areas up to 20 miles away from the sites, reports the BBC. The four wells examined have been pumping four million barrels of water a month to a depth of around two miles underground. At one site linked to the wells, a small town called Jones, there have been more 2,500 earthquakes greater than magnitude 3.0 since 2008—a fifth of the total in the central and western US during that period.

“It really is unprecedented to have this many earthquakes over a broad region like this,” a study co-author tells Scientific American, explaining that wastewater injection can cause quakes by sending out waves of fluid pressure, causing faults miles away to slip. “Most big sequences of earthquakes that we see are either a main shock and a lot of aftershocks or it might be right at the middle of a volcano in a volcanic system or geothermal system. So you might see little swarms but nothing really this distributed and this persistent,” he says. (In Texas, several small towns troubled by quakes are considering banning fracking.)

The truly sad part of this tale is that few seem to care about the consequences of this type of extraction…….this is until something goes horribly wrong and then……..predictably it will be all Obama’s fault.

Should Predictions Have Consequences?

The weekend and time to lighten up the posts from the drudgery of politics and the 2012 election……

I have heard a lot of stuff that is illegal in other countries….like women driving or spitting in public or……..you get the idea….but I recently heard one that even I thought was moronic……

(Newser) – An Italian court has convicted six scientists for failing to predict a deadly earthquake, which, congratulations, puts it in the running for “dumbest court in the world,” reads the headline to a post by Elie Mystal at the Above the Law blog. Prosecutors blamed the six for providing “inaccurate, incomplete, and contradictory information” prior to the quake. “No, you freaking idiots, THE EARTH provided inaccurate, incomplete, and contradictory information about whether or not she was going to destroy your insignificant human settlement,” writes Mystal. “The scientists were just trying to make a guess.” He draws a comparison to the persecution of Galileo, which is a common refrain:

  • Dan Murphy, Christian Science Monitor: “Rarely since a Catholic inquisition in Rome condemned Galileo Galilei to spend the remainder of his days under house arrest for the heresy of teaching that the Earth revolves around the sun, has an Italian court been so wrong about science.”
  • Lord Robert May: “The verdict might have been understandable in the Dark Ages, standing alongside the persecution of Galileo, but in today’s world it simply is an embarrassment to the Italian government and anyone associated with it,” the Oxford professor tells AFP.
  • Buzz Skyline, PhysicsCentral: “If the convictions stand, it will mean it’s dangerous for scientists to advise on science matters in Italy. Then all they will have left is tea leaves, Tarot cards, and psychics. What a way to waste the Renaissance.”

Now after I thought about it maybe we could use this as a template for global warming……thoughts?

Never Gonna Happen Here!

By now, unless you are a slug and live under a rock, you have heard of the disaster in Japan…..the 9.0 quake and the resulting tsunami….which has help cause a nuclear disaster…..it seems that a local nuke plant is exploding and burning and, in short, just a heartbeat away from a meltdown…and that would not be good for anyone on this planet……

But I want to talk about the rest of Japan…..because of the disaster the country has lost about 25% of its total power output…..and the government decide the way to handle this short fall was to have rolling blackouts and the word went out to the people that they needed to conserve as much as possible……

It appears that the people of Japan have taken heed of the word from the government and conserved…..conserved so much that the rolling blackouts were NOT necessary…..let me say that again!  The rolling blackouts were NOT necessary!

That means that the Japanese people stepped up in a time of crisis and pulled together to assist the country in its time of need……Again?  They were responsible enough to step up and conserve for the good of the nation!  Of course this may not be a permanent situation…..but at least they step up……this is also a perfect illustration of what “shared sacrifice” means…..

OK, now look at the US……would that happen here in this country?  Of course, it would NOT!  The people of the US cannot pull together for something as important as education and to think that they would do so in time of crisis is delusional……very few are responsible enough to help the country, maybe their neighbors in time of crisis….but the whole country….NO WAY!

Haiti: Problem Solved (?)

Daily Agitator

Today is Sunday and I was going to post something clever and witty….but then I was brought back to reality by the sure STUPIDITY of the nation’s of the world…..

Comedian Ron White says , “you cannot fix stupid”…..and the world is proving his point……

I, like most of the world, have been disgusted with the snail’s pace of the distribution of needed supplies to the people of Haiti….I have bitched along with many other bloggers about the idiocy of the distribution……but I had only thought that I had seen or heard it all when it comes to Haiti….

I spotted this article yesterday while trying to relax and catch up on the day’s news…this piece was in the NY Times in an article written by Damien Cave:

After two weeks of often chaotic food distribution, the United Nations announced plans on Saturday for a coupon-based system that aims to give rice to 10,000 Haitians a day at each of 16 locations around Port-au-Prince.

The new program — with the first coupons delivered Saturday, and food to be distributed Sunday — ends what officials described as the “quick and dirty” initial phase of emergency response, but it is also an admission of what Haitians were saying for days: that the system failed to reach those who needed it and was often exploited by those it did reach.

Who came up with this pile of manure?  Wait for it there is more…..

Over the next 15 days, Mr. Prior said, aid groups and United Nations workers will go into neighborhoods and distribute coupons that allow each family to receive a single 55-pound bag of rice. A similar coupon system has been in place for about a week at some of the smaller tent camps — for instance, on the lawn of the prime minister’s office, where the German Red Cross gives out food twice a day.

I am sorry but if this is the best idea these pricks can come up with then the people of Haiti are TOTALLY screwed!

Let me see if I have this right…..they go to the people and give them a coupon so they can show up the next day a get a bag of rice…is that the plan?  This is bullsh*t on so many levels!

One….why not give them food the day they see them?  Second, most people live in a tent for god’s sake…how will they keep a 55 lb bag of rice safe from the elements or looters?  Who was the f*cking mental midget that had this brain storm?

Once again…I will illustrate how simple it is……the UN divides the country into sectors and each major power involved gets on…they are responsible for the feeding and care of the people of that sector……that way everybody gets to be the hero and most important people get FOOD!  You dipsticks do know what a helicopter is, right?  As the scenario plays out in Haiti we all see just how pathetic the rest of the world is….no one country has a corner on stupid…..as I have said….I am watching the same scenario from Katrina being played out in Haiti….complete incompetency…….

Petty posturing is so damn lame that it makes most normal individuals ill….15+ days into the quake recovery and this is the best plan to feed people….when 2012 gets here WE ALL ARE F*CKED!

My friend Quin at Quintessential Havoc (go to blogroll a good informative blog) brought up an excellent point….could all this be deliberate?  I want to say NO but then we are dealing with egotistical a/holes……any thoughts?

Plan For Haiti’s Relief

More than two weeks after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the supplies are still not getting through to the people on a regular basis and seems to be a major hold up for some reason….there seems to be some petty envy among the participants of the distribution of supplies…that alone is thoroughly absurd….people are suffering put your goddamn envies to bed and help these people….

I have heard that part of the problem is that the roads are impassable in places…WAIT!…..have any of these morons ever heard of a helicopter?  Divide the country up into sectors and let each country that wants to be the hero take a sector…..set up easily controlled distribution sites and then go to fuc*ing work…this is not rocket science….or maybe it is……

Are you telling me that the brilliant minds that start wars cannot figure out how to distribute emergency supplies?  Set up a field hospital on the grounds of the destroyed presidential palace…it is fenced and could be easily protected from anyone that feels froggy and wants to attack…..or use it as a main supply point for the same reason….

Let the UN go in and section off the country and assign each section to a country that has a presence there….

I see the US has learned nothing from Katrina…there were plenty of supplies but they were outta reach of the people for days and even a week or more….sound familiar?  You would think that we have learned from our mistakes…apparently we have learned NOTHING in the science of getting emergency supplies to people in need….ALL the people….

I would like to apologize to the people of Haiti for the arrogance, ignorance and stupidity of the world….especially the industrialized world…..

Cry For Haiti

We all have seen the disastrous in Haiti after the massive earthquake…all the death, destruction, misery and hopelessness….we have all watched the world respond generously to the situation…but now I am seeing a pattern that may just not be so….but it is all too familiar.

Writing recently for wsws.org, Bill Van Auken:

From the dawn of the 20th century, Haiti fell under the domination of Washington and the US banks, whose interests were defended by sending Marines to carry out an occupation that continued for nearly 20 years, maintained through the bloody suppression of Haitian resistance.

The Marines left only after carrying out the “Haitianization”—as the New York Times referred to it at the time—of the war against the Haitian people by building an army dedicated to internal repression.

Subsequently, Washington backed the 30-year dictatorship of the Duvaliers, which began with the coming to power of Papa Doc in 1957. While tens of thousands of Haitians died at the hands of the military and the dreaded Tontons Macoute, US imperialism saw the murderous dictatorship as a bulwark against communism and revolution in the Caribbean.

Since the mass upheavals that brought down the Duvaliers in 1986, successive US governments, Democratic and Republican alike, have sought to reconstruct a reliable client state capable of defending the markets and investments of US firms attracted by starvation wages, as well as the property and wealth of the Haitian ruling elite. This entails preventing any challenge to a socio-economic order that keeps 80 percent of the population in dire poverty.

Haiti’s original constitution was written by the commander of US troops that were occupying the island nation some 100 years ago…..

I believe it was Woodrow Wilson that sent the first troops to Haiti in 1913….and the US has been involved in Haiti’s internal affairs ever since…I am hoping that this is not a usual move to try and get a foothold in Haiti once again…to make Haiti into this “little” America in the Caribbean…….but it just seems all too familiar……

2010 Anal-Ocity #2

I just had to make it official that Robertson got a nod for his most anal of statements……

It is early in the new year and already the motor mouths cannot stop themselves from saying dumbass sh*t…

This one is from the 700 Club’s Pat Robertson:

“And you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French, you know, Napoleon the Third and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact tothe devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’ True story. And so the devil said, ‘O.K., it’s a deal.’ “

The theory that Haiti is a nation built on a pact with the devil has circulated on a number of websites, each tracing back to an apocryphal tale of Haitian voodoo priests sacrificing a pig and drinking its blood in 1791 in order to secure Satan’s aid in expelling the French occupation. In return, the priests are said to have promised Haiti to Satan for the next 200 years. The French were soon beat back, and in 1804, Haiti became an independent nation. But even if you believe the story (something many historians doubt), Satan’s lease on the tiny island nation should have expired in 1991.

This person is an idiot and if I could I would immediately give him the Assie Award….it will be hard to find another person this f*cking stupid!
