Closing Thought–08Aug18

You know sometimes the best thing to do is say nothing or in Our Dear Leader’s case….do not Tweet.

But he has done a smart thing……he will not take questions from the press as he stumbles out to Marine One…..

Recently Dear Leader made a Tweet as he always does but this time it was not some mindless rant…it was admitting to collusion (BTW it is not a crime to collude but obstruction is)…..

The White House announced on Monday that President Donald Trump would not take any questions after he admitted on Twitter that his son may have colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign.

In a tweet over the weekend, Trump reversed course on his explanation of a 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer in Trump Tower. The president had originally claimed that the meeting had been about adoptions. But in his Sunday tweet, Trump admitted that the purpose of the meeting had been to get damaging information about Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee.

Ya know… old saying comes to mind….”It is better to be thought of as a moron than opening mouth and proving it” (That may be a paraphrase)

You know wearing your feelings on your sleeve will bite you in the ass every time.

I realize that most politicians hate the media….for not one of them wants to be held accountable for their actions or words….and in a recent study some within the GOP would close down the media…..

According to a new poll, a plurality of Republican voters want President Donald Trump to be able to shut down media outlets if he decides they have engaged in “bad behavior.”

The Ipsos poll, first reported by The Daily Beast, found that 43 percent of Republicans believe “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior.” Thirty-six percent of Republicans surveyed said that the president should not have the power to silence the press.

Illustrates that the GOP embraces our rights as long as they can control what we get as rights…..I have been calling the GOP liars for decades and now we are seeing just how bad they really are…..

A closing joke……

To confuse a MAGA supporter…..put 3 shovels in a corner and tell them to take their pick.  (rim shot)

Did The Nukes End The War?

World War Two kept raging even after the surrender of Nazi Germany….he US was locked into island hopping warfare heading towards the Japanese homeland…..Japan’s cities were fire bombed almost daily….and then Truman decided the only way to end the war was to use the new weapon….the Atom bomb.

After two nukes were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Japanese leadership decided they had had enough and they sued of peace and formally surrender shortly thereafter.

Ever since the first bomb was dropped there had been a debate on whether they truly did end the war……..

the 72nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, followed three days later by the bombing of Nagasaki.

Residents of former Allied countries all generally agree on what happened next: An awed Japan surrendered and the world was spared the devastating human cost of a land invasion of the Japanese home islands. A particularly chilling fact is that United States has yet to use up the vast supply of Purple Hearts minted in anticipation of a bloody landing.

Arguments against the bombings usually take a moral tack. That whatever the ends, it’s never right to intentionally vaporize women and children. But in recent years an entire new argument has emerged: Bomb or no bomb, the war would have ended anyway.

Never let it be said that I only offer one side of a post… in all fairness this article on the choice the US had to make during WW2……

On the morning of August 6, 1945, the American B-29 Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later another B-29, Bock’s Car , released one over Nagasaki. Both caused enormous casualties and physical destruction. These two cataclysmic events have preyed upon the American conscience ever since. The furor over the Smithsonian institution’s Enola Gay exhibit and over the mushroom-cloud postage stamp last autumn are merely the most obvious examples. Harry S. Truman and other officials claimed that the bombs caused Japan to surrender, thereby avoiding a bloody invasion. Critics have accused them of at best failing to explore alternatives, at worst of using the bombs primarily to make the Soviet Union “more manageable” rather than to defeat a Japan they knew already was on the verge of capitulation.

Personally, I believe that these bombs were not necessary…..but then it was not my choice.

Could the Soviet Union entering into the Pacific theater have been another reason for the surrender of Japan?

At the Tehran Conference in Nov 1943 and at the Yalta Conference in Feb 1945, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had agreed declare war on Japan three months after Germany would be defeated. On 5 Apr 1945, the Soviet Union informed Japan that the Soviet Union would not renew the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact of 1941, which ensured non-aggression between the two nations through 13 Apr 1946. At 2300 hours Transbaikal time on 8 Aug 1945, Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov informed Japanese ambassador Sato that the Soviet Union was revoking the neutrality pact with a declaration of war effective on 9 Aug; at this point, the neutrality pact was still six months from its natural expiration.

My point is that there was more to the closing days of WW2 than the dropping of a couple of potent bombs.

Class dismissed!

Tired Of War Yet?

I do a lot of reading and some it I use and some of it I save in case it is needed later and other times I flush it out of my system because it is total crap……then I read something that I found interesting and the more I thought about it as I was reading I came down with a case of calling it “CRAP”…..

The piece was printed in The Hill……it states that Dems need to be aware that voters are tired of war……really?

With the nomination and likely confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, the party of Donald Trump is on the precipice of dominating all three branches of the federal government. After sweeping to victory in the 2006 midterms and then electing a popular two-term president in 2008, the collapse of Democratic influence in Washington represents an astonishing turnabout of political fortune.

A study suggests that a pivotal moment in the Democratic collapse happened in a Republican presidential debate in 2015, when Donald Trump established his reputation as an opponent of interventionism in the Middle East. During the debate, Jeb Bush chided Trump for his lack of foreign policy experience, and Trump unleashed a roundhouse punch that not only flattened Bush but ultimately Hillary Clinton.

I disagree!  If Americans were truly tired of war then they would demand it end…I am not talking about campaign slogans, chants or applause….they would vote to end it….so far they roll over and support the troops with slogans and chants and ignore the veterans.  They are NOT tired of war!  They relish it!

This piece was an outside attempt to influence the direction of the Dems during the Mid-Terms…..

Even in the day when wars make little sense we are still fighting in many countries all in the name of national security…….but nonetheless war makes little sense anymore…..

America spends more on its military than all its enemies put together yet it still can’t win wars. Failed adventures in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan have drained America’s power and diminished its prestige. The bloated Pentagon budget actually makes us weaker.

Here’s the weird bit: nobody seems to care. If any other government department spent as much and accomplished as little, the populace would be in arms, complaining about wasteful government spending. Instead we mumble “Thank you for your service” and increase defense appropriations.

Regardless we will continue to fight these wars of adventurism and the American people will care less that our troops are dying for what?

Back during WW2 the nation shared the experience with our soldiers…..civilians had to deal with rationing….not as life changing as combat but the people were asked to sacrifice….something they are not capable of doing these days…..the people are more spoiled than a 2 year old….

Iran And The Rest Of The Story

This post contains a lot of information but it is necessary to understand what the situation is all about…..a lot of reading….but worth the time.

Right now everybody’s attention is on this international situation or that and the one that will be getting more and more attention is Iran…..

First we need to think about all the years that the neocons fed by Israeli BS have wanted some sort of action against include our Chief of Staff and the SecState……too many some sort of physical action but what would that accomplish?

The establishment of a military force to go abroad and overthrow governments does not appear anywhere in the Constitution of the United States, nor does calling for destruction of countries that do not themselves threaten America appear anywhere in Article 2, which describes the responsibilities of the President. Indeed, both Presidents George Washington and John Quincy Adams warned against the danger represented by foreign entanglements, with Adams specifically addressing what we now call democracy promotion, warning that the United States “should not go abroad to slay dragons.”

Our best shot at punishing Iran has been the sanctions…..their economy has suffered and protests have erupted…..but is the sanctions really the answer that the US is searching for?

President Trump’s escalation of anti-Iran rhetoric and increased US pressure against the Islamic Republic have been a boon to Iran’s noisy minority of hard-line, America-obsessed flag burners.

But the US campaign is doing more than strengthen the hard-liners. Amid a broader administration effort to deepen instability among Iranians torn by their own political and social divides, there are signs the Trump-led targeting of Iran may be backfiring, as Iranians coalesce against a foreign enemy.

As the possibility of an armed conflict grows more likely…some have stepped forward to let Our Dear Leader know that some decisions would not be in the best interest of the US……

SUBJECT: Intelligence on Iran Fails the Smell Test

Mr. President:

In conclusion……is all this effort truly the path that needs traveling?

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s provocative speech on 22 July that attacked Iran’s leadership and policies, and prompted a brief but hostile exchange between President Hassan Rouhani and President Donald Trump about the threat of war, has provided an opportunity for Rouhani to seize the initiative and sell himself and the Iranian government, domestically and internationally, as genuinely moderate and committed to reformist policies.

If Rouhani grasps the challenge, two credibility tests will apply: are those policies truly reformist and, if so, will he have the support of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the military to implement them?

Iran is a thorn in the side of Israel and the US will do as they order…..and that includes armed conflict something this country does not need.

Watch this site…we will keep you reading….

NOTE:  News came out after the writing of this post….the US is re-instating the sanctions as of Tuesday at 1201 hrs….

The deadline is nearly here: At 12:01am Tuesday, the US will reimpose sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the nuclear arms accord put into place by the Obama White House. President Trump backed out of that accord, though China, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, and the European Union are still on board, notes the Wall Street Journal. This first round of sanctions is relatively minor compared to a much tougher round due to take effect in November that would, among other things, attempt to cut off Iran’s oil exports. As the US penalties go into effect, the EU already has issued a “blocking statute” designed to protect member nations that continue to do business with Iran, reports the AP.

While Iran is generally considered to be adhering to the 2015 agreement, Trump viewed it as a “horrible” deal, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insists that Tehran must agree to tougher terms and change its behavior before sanctions are again lifted. “We’re hopeful that we can find a way to move forward, but it’s going to require enormous change on the part of the Iranian regime,” he said Sunday. “They’ve got to behave like a normal country. That’s the ask. It’s pretty simple.” Among other things, Pompeo says Iran continues to sponsor terror groups throughout the Middle East

European countries some of them our allies have said that they will stand by the conditions of the deal signed in the past…..

A joint statement offered by the various top-ranking foreign policy officials in the EU, the Foreign Ministers of the three P5+1 parties and the EU chief Federica Mogherini, says they will maintain effective financial channels for Iran and ensure that they can keep exporting oil and gas.

The statement further says that the preservation of the nuclear deal is both about respecting international agreement and is “a matter of international security.” The US is threatening ‘severe consequences’ for those who don’t abide by their sanctions.

And of course Our Dear Leader will not just do something and let it sink in before he starts his dance among the policies……this time another threat to our allies…..

President Trump issued another warning in regard to Tehran on Tuesday, but this time it’s directed at nations outside Iran. “Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States,” Trump tweeted. “I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!” The message comes as the first round of US sanctions goes back into effect on Iran following Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear arms accord. As the Guardian reports, the warning seems to be aimed mainly at the European Union, which opposes the sanctions. In fact, the EU has sought to protect member nations who continue to do “legitimate business” with Tehran. Trump calls the sanctions “the most biting” ever imposed and noted that they “ratchet up to yet another level” in November.

Iran’s president, meanwhile, tells CNN the US is engaging in “psychological warfare” to sow divisions within Iran, though Hassan Rouhani predicted the sanctions would end up isolating America, not Iran. In addition to EU states, Rouhani said China and Russia would similarly continue conducting business with Iran. However, Rouhani also said he is open to talks with Trump immediately, though he suggested that the sanctions must end first. “If somebody puts a knife in its opponent or enemy’s arm and says we want to negotiate, the answer is that they must first pull out the knife and then come to the negotiation table.”

I have heard of playing something by ear….but not foreign policy…..

This is not the end of the tale……just the rest of the story as of today….surely more to come……
