For over a month the world has been on the edge of their seats dying from anticipation on the exact location of the Malaysian plane…….we have had NO news only speculation for that month…….here debris…there debris……and a ping or two…..well as of yesterday there is a good possibility that the pings heard may be the missing plane……which will be good….I am sick of all the “experts” and their wild eyed speculation…….
All that aside I was wondering….what is the cost of this search? And now there is an answer to that question……….
As searchers listen for pings in the Indian Ocean that might help them find the missing Flight 370, Reuters assesses the cost of the hunt after a month and finds that it’s on track to become the most expensive search in aviation history. Reuters figures that the militaries of Australia, China, the US, and Vietnam have spent $44 million already, about the amount spent in the two-year search for the Air France jet that went missing in 2009. The $44 million total doesn’t take into account civilian aircraft or the cost of accommodating hundreds of intelligence analysts and other personnel worldwide. Add those expenses in, and the total is in the “hundreds of millions of dollars.”
Australia is leading the search and has borne about half the costs so far, though Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the nation may ask others to defray its expenses later. “At some point, there might need to be a reckoning, there might need to be some kind of tallying, but nevertheless we are happy to be as helpful as we can to all the countries that have a stake in this,” he said. The Pentagon estimates that the US has spent $3.3 million so far. With no sign of the pings in two days, the search could drag on and on, reports AP. Australia plans to release a submersible to scan the ocean floor, but it hopes to get a more precise location before doing so.
Now I would like to ask…..Is this desperate search to save Boeing’s rep or is it for the closure of the families? That may sound like a cold hearted question….but it needs to be asked…….for one reason…..we are spending money willy nilly but yet those poor people needing help are “free loaders”….I understand the need for closure……but at what price?
9/11 conjures up all kinds of visions…..we have the hatred, the conspiracies, the controversy and of course the monument…….there is a new story about the long awaited monument to the attacks on 9/11…….we have the reflection pool….we have the price to enter the monument and now we have some cryptic saying…….
The words, with no context beyond location, seem appropriate enough: “No day shall erase you from the memory of time. Virgil.” So reads a 60-foot-long inscription appearing along a wall at the soon-to-open National September 11 Memorial Museum. Behind the wall sit the 8,000 human remains that could not be identified. And behind the quote sits a story that doesn’t exactly jibe with the setting, the New York Times finds. The line is pulled from Book 9 of the Aeneid, and the “you” it refers to are Nisus and Euryalus—two men who happen to be Trojan soldiers, and whose story is described thusly by David Dunlap for the Times:
- “Your deaths are not unprovoked. You have just slaughtered the enemy in an orgy of violence, skewering soldiers whom you ambushed in their sleep. For this, the enemy has killed you and impaled your heads on spears.”
As Dunlap points out, Nisus and Euryalus aren’t exactly a stand-in for the 9/11 victims. A classics professor calls the inscription “shockingly inappropriate” on first blush, and better suited for those who carried out the attacks, though she concedes the quote could prod visitors to consider “what drives young men to commit such atrocities.” Further, Vocativ points out that, based on the devices Virgil uses to explain their relationship, scholars classify the two men as lovers. Museum officials have long been aware of the contention surrounding the line, and dropped the word “Aeneid” from it, perhaps to insert more distance between the statement and its source.
I realize we Americans cannot seem to exist without our slogans…….but this one is just weird….at least to me……..do you have an opinion or do I need to wait for the MSM to do it for you?
A couple of days ago I wrote a post about some Dem that thinks our poor underpaid Congress people need a raise…….these people just get more pathetic by the election….but there is an idea that is being floated about the Congress pay raise…….
You were probably outraged when Rep. Jim Moran said members of Congress can’t live on $174,000 per year, right? But over at Salon, Alex Pareene makes the case for why we actually should pay lawmakers more—say, a million bucks a year. Yes, we all hate Congress, but here’s the truth: “A Congress that is made up of rich-but-not-super-rich people is going to be more corruptible than a Congress of really rich people,” Pareene writes. That’s because many lawmakers want to be ultra-rich, which is how we end up with scandals like Bob McDonnell accepting illegal gifts while he was governor of Virginia.
That craving to be mega-rich is also why members of Congress “advance the interests of their funders far more often than they advance the interests of regular folk,” Pareene writes. To remove the influence of the rich on government, “we ought to try to free our lawmakers from reliance on wealthier benefactors.” And higher salaries would be a sort of campaign finance reform: “Everyone loves it when a billionaire candidate like Michael Bloomberg promises to be ‘above politics’ because he can fund his own election, so why not let members of Congress do the same?” Click for Pareene’s full column.
So sorry but most of these toads are already rich and if they cannot live on what we pay then stay home and bother the wife……or like I said the other day….get a second job….but one that does not conflicyt with his government position….try fry cook and see what the rest of us go through.
