And now the weekend and time for….”something completely different”……..
Okay, I admit it…..I am a wine snob! California wine taste like it has been soaked in salt……Australian wine smells like a wet dog…….for me it is Spanish and French wines that are the best……Chilean and Argentine well do in a pinch…….and Germ,an wine has lost all its character…..

I have been drinking wine with meals since I was a boy living in Europe……seems like an incomplete meal without a good wine……so this news is the worst news I could ever receive…..
Newser) – A worldwide wine shortage? Technically speaking, it’s already happened, reports Quartz. And what’s more, things are on track to get worse. Stats compiled by Morgan Stanley Research show that the world fell 300 million cases short of demand last year, the biggest in-the-red number in half a century. The problem is rather simple despite the scale: Everyone is drinking more—especially the US and China—even as production is dropping.
Last year, for instance, production worldwide fell 5%, mostly because of lousy weather in France and Argentina, reports CNNMoney. The 2013 harvest will be much stronger, but Roberto Ferdman at Quartz warns that one solid year isn’t going to matter much in the long run. “Europe, which has easily been suffering the steepest decline in wine production (roughly 25% since 2004) will have to reverse its recent bout of poor harvests well into the century to continue supplying the world,” he writes
Hulk sad!
Connect the dots. “Lousy weather” = climate change.
Larry, it is truly that simple…too bad that idiots cannot believe their eyes….
😆 Sorry, but I was struck by your panic at the thought of a wine shortage… I have to say, though, that panic is a bit premature, given that wine can be made in your own back yard, and grapes are a pretty hardy plant… But, I also agree that global warming is real, and will be a problem for all of us, not just because it will affect the wines, though that is a catastrophe of major proportion, to be sure…..
I must admit, I was a bit put off by your claims about California wines, and am compelled to disagree to some extent… The number of wines now available in the state is far too large to generalize so heavily….I, too, am a wine snob, both by long use, and by having studied them in culinary school, (the California Culinary Academy, now a Cordon Bleu school…), as well as during my years as a chef/caterer/maitre d’hotel in the restaurant industry… While there is nothing that will beat a good 20 year old Rioja, a 10 year old Bordeaux, or a six to eight year old Chateauneuf du Pape….not to mention a nice, crisp Pouilly Fuise, (or almost anything from the Loire Valley…) there are some absolutely wonderful blends of syrah, cabernet, and sangiovaise, as well as the varietals themselves, coming out of the California hills… Though I don’t agree at all about the Chilean wines, which have never impressed me, I do agree that Australian wines have a way to go before joining the ranks of the best… However, I will swear to you that there is NOTHING better with a rib-eye, or a filet mignon, than a good Sonoma or Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, of the right vintage… Beaulieu Vineyards, BV, has a line of wines patterned after those vinted by Louis Latoure, all of which are magnificent…Heaven on Earth, my friend…. Also, the Sterling 1996, or 1998 Merlot is pretty hard to beat, with almost any red meat, or a hearty soup….
Sorry for pontificating, but, I love my wines!…. Thanks for the post, and don’t worry, SOMEBODY will always be making wine… 😀
No problem…wines are a taste thing…either you like them or not….while I have tried the ba-zillion different wines now in the states….a little sad that everybody wants to own a vineyard…..I really have not found a Calif wine that I like….and Australian….disgusting…I said I was a wine snob…I prefer a good Tinto from Spain…..like I said it is all in the person’s tastes…..
For awhile I did a food blog…..after years of cooking I felt I needed to share….but very popular so I went back to what I know best politics and economics to a small extent…..
Very cool beans, amigo…. Sounds as if we’ve worn several of the same hats over the years… I look forward to any future dialogue with great anticipation…. 😀 And, no worries, being a snob is like being arrogant about ANYthing… it’s only out of place when it is not based on reality, or on faith, instead of evidence… If you’ve tried a lot of them, then you at least were open to the tasting… and there is no accounting for taste! 😆
See ya around WP…. Take care, & Blessed Be….
I also look forward to it…a good exchange is a highlight of the day….please visit and comment whenever you like….have a great day….chuq
