It is Sunday and as usual I tried to find something that is not involved with politics to do a post on and I found a doosey……….
By now most us will know just how groundbreaking MTV has been in the past…the first vid channel….first vid award….the first …..well you get the picture……but now they are first yet again…the first to go to child porn as entertainment…..(is that not something one goes to prison for?)
Their new show “Skins” is an instant hit….3.3 million viewers for the first show…..
That pressure is already beginning to mount. At least one advertiser, Taco Bell, announced it is pulling its commercials from future shows.
Taco Bell is not the only organization up in arms about the new show. The Parents Television Council called on the chairmen of the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary committees and the Department of Justice to open investigations about what the PTC alleges is child pornography on “Skins” involving actors as young as 15.
Among the concerns are the ages of some of the actors. Several “Skins” cast members are as young as 15 years old. Their roles in upcoming episodes, which include nudity, have prompted some to wonder whether MTV is doing a delicate dance around child pornography issues.
There is a huge back lash against the show…..
Viacom executives have ordered producers to either make changes or tone down the most explicit content, the New York Times reports.
Meetings on the show were held Tuesday, and executives wondered if they could face criminal prosecution and jail time if the episodes were broadcast without changes, the Times reports.
They are nervous about the third episode of the series, in which 17-year-old actor Jesse Carere is shown running down these street naked from behind. The plot centers around his erection, aided by erectile dysfunction pills. It’s slated to air Jan. 31.
I understand the concern and the outrage……child porn is a problem in this country as well as the rest of the world….but should not someone feel obliged to ask the question….where are the parents of these children?
Come on…you can piss and moan about the content of the show…..but why would parents allow their children to be portrayed as sex addicts and drug addicts? Should not the focus should be on the parents? These are minors! And if I go to jail for offering a drink to a minor, should not these parents be held to some sort of accountability?
I realize the money may be good, but this smacks of pimping your kids out to perverts….
Well, not the sort of thing to try to get an American (or I suspect a Brit) audience to accept.
Of course, I haven’t seen the show, so I wouldn’t know, but including nudity! Wow! How pornographic!
Then again… since when was nudity equated with porn by sane people (shades of Iran) and does anyone REALLY imagine that 15 year old American kids aren’t screwing each other silly?
Still, it takes all sorts. Maybe the show actually IS pornographic (that’s REAL porn, not tight-assed, get a life, US god-botherer, all in the mind, porn), but it seems unlikely as I can’t imagine a well known TV network would actually be that stupid! Duh!
I suspect that the real problem is that a lot of people need to get out more!
All is true…and I have NO prob with nudity….but we are talking about children, yes they fuck like rabbits, but I have a prob with using kids to make cash…..if they were 18 or older then who fucking cares……to me it is not about the nudity but that the parents are not acting responsibly…….
Yes, I take that point and it’s a good one. However, isn’t that what most ambitious parents without talent of their own do with (for??) their kids in the US?
I dont see as much a problem with the show as much as where its being broadcast. MTVs audience are young, pre-teens, children. Come on! have some integrity, who do they think is watching.
Ah, that’s different – not something I would know… but then again – what time is it on? Do parents censor ANYTHING their kids watch? Just asking as it’s hard for a non-American to grasp this.
Nevertheless, I do agree with you if that’s their primary audience it’s perhaps at least inappropriate…
Although, yet again I ask, what is the show about? Nudity at any age never hurt anyone – in the UK you now can’t even video your own kids (fully clothed – as in a school play) if there are other kids around in case your video is somehow exciting to a pervert! How f*cking stupid are these people? With their paranoia, they are CREATING perverts and prospective insecure teens of the future, instead of healthy, well balanced young adults!
Quin…I have not seen it either but I understand that it is rip-off of a show in the UK……..I mean drugs, sex and rock n roll sells and that is what MTV or Viacom, parent company, is after……
That must have been a UK show I didn’t watch either (there are a lot), so I’m still little the wiser.
Frankly, I don’t see why parents can’t simply stop their kids from watching stuff they deem to be “unsuitable”, but I do feel that in many cases parents don’t want their offspring being prompted to ask “awkward” questions because they are too embarrassed to answer them – which to my mind says more about the parents than it does about the children, or the media.
It’s only a few hundred years ado that most houses had just the one room – I presume men and women never had sex in those days once they had one child to reduce the opportunity for privacy – yeah, right!
I’m not advocating porn for kids or anything outlandish like that, I’m just asking the question – what is it we are so scared of our kids finding out about life? Have we so far lost the plot that we are returning to the idea that there is something to be inherently ashamed of about our bodies or even what we enjoy doing (need to do for the survival of the species) with them?
I realize that kids today are dealing with a set of problems that are some what unique…..and I agree that the problems must be addressed and solutions found….but I ask is MTV the best place for such…….and sex will be had…but on MTV?
I don’t think there’s anything unique about today’s problems for kids – except that parents are so busy theorising that they are becoming even worse parents than ours or our forefathers were.
Whatever, in my opinion it’s the parents that are the problem, but THEY do face some difficulties that are new – not least the total lack of respect and sense of responsibility of most people for just about anything – including themselves.
Trust me on this, people, there are a whole lot bigger problems threatening our kids’ futures than sex!
Yes, yes….I agree…..but my point more is the commercialization of teen sex….
