Pentagon Needs Money

The $1 trillion budget the Pentagon is trying to push through Congress is not doing so well….and now the Speaker Johnson in true MAGA form is trying to make a non-existent problem into a money maker for the Pentagon.

As he pushed for Congress to approve $350 billion in new spending requested by the Pentagon, House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested Tuesday that some of the funds were needed for “fighting communism on our own shores,” an ominous notion in light of President Donald Trump’s threats to deploy the US military against his domestic enemies.

In addition to the already record-breaking $1.1 trillion military spending bill that was approved last month by the House Appropriations Committee, the Pentagon has requested a separate $350 billion package to be passed through a separate GOP-led spending bill known as “Reconciliation 3.0,” which can pass without Democratic support.

Johnson (La.) has faced pushback from some GOP senators, including Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and the hospitalized Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky.), as he’s sought additional spending. During a press conference on Tuesday, Johnson made his case for Republicans to back the reconciliation proposal.

The speaker argued that the package included “transformational funding that will help us change the dynamic of the Department of War and make it more efficient and effective,” including Trump’s request to “effectively double the funding for national defense.”

“Look, we live in dangerous times,” Johnson said. “We’re fighting communism on our own shores, and we’re fighting evil terrorists and tyrants around the world, and we have to be able to protect our national security.”

The Court System is ‘Corrupt’

That is the statement made by the Speaker of the House Johnson….

Johnson, who is second in line for the presidency, called the court system “corrupt.”

While I seldom agree with much any Repub has to say these I will admit that I agree with his statement in general terms but do not agree with the substance of his statement.

You can see what I mean….

In portraying the case against Trump as politically motivated, the Republicans are also laying the groundwork to dismiss its significance should the jury convict, and for potential challenges to the fall election, a rematch with President Joe Biden, a Democrat

Johnson was a chief architect of Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential results ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, mob assault on the U.S. Capitol, and last week he called the hush money trial and the other election-year cases against Trump a “borderline criminal conspiracy.”

Recent news from the courts points to rampant corruption with favors showered on the judges….so I agree with Johnson that he court system is corrupt and can be bought.
 
But that is what we get when we allow groups like the Federalists to give us political hacks as judges.
 
Personally Donald the Orange needs to be held accountable for everything he has done as he works against the very democratic foundations of this country.
 
But sadly the court system will remain just as corrupt as it is today or possibly become even more so in the future….time for a change in the system to make it a reliable referee of the federal system…..that is missing in today’s court.

Dems To The Rescue

Freedom Caucus ideologue MTG has made it clear that she does not want Speaker Johnson to remain in the position and she will lead the charge to oust him from the speakership.

But it looks like her effort was dashed ……Johnson was saved by the Dems….

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to oust Speaker Mike Johnson was met with boos, laughter, and 359 votes against in the House on Wednesday, quelling the Georgia Republican’s long-threatened revolt. Greene’s measure won the support of only 10 other Republicans and 32 Democrats, 163 of whom backed keeping Johnson while seven voted present. GOP members booed as Greene introduced her measure earlier in the day, the Washington Post reports. When Majority Whip Steve Scalise immediately moved to kill it, nearly all members yelled their approval, with only the voices of Greene and GOP Rep. Thomas Massie heard to say “nay.” Laughter followed.

“This is the uniparty for the American people watching,” Greene said as she was being booed. Afterward, Johnson expressed appreciation to the members who declined to end his speakership after six months. “Hopefully, this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined the 118th Congress,” he said. “It’s regrettable, it’s not who we are as Americans, and we’re better than this.” He had the support of Donald Trump, who posted online Wednesday that “this is not the time” for a motion to vacate. Trump called Johnson a “good man who is trying very hard,” per CBS News.

ohnson and Greene had met a couple of times this week, though he denied negotiating with her to keep the job. Demands by Greene and Massie, per the Post, included that Johnson act to:

  • Allow no more aid to be sent to Ukraine this year.
  • Put only bills on the floor that most Republicans support.
  • Move to defund all Justice Department investigations of Trump.
  • Pass a dozen individual spending bills or institute a 1% reduction across government agencies.

Johnson did not give the pair an answer.

Did Trump in his insistence that the GOP unite help save Johnson’s job?

Did the Dems save Johnson’s speakership out of the kindness in their hearts?

Did the Dems get anything for their help?

Is MTG done with her symbolic antics?

How much more time will be wasted in the attempts to make a Speaker resign?

Do they not realize that the country is circling the drain and they play games.

I see that since the Speaker has saved our home appliances he has decide to cave to the warhawks and piss away more taxpayer cash on these damn wars…..

Speaker Mike Johnson’s four-pronged foreign aid package has become five bills, and his job could depend on what happens with the reworked legislation. On Wednesday, Johnson told his Republican caucus that the House will stay in session until it votes Saturday evening on the package with stalled aid for Israel and Ukraine as its centerpiece, the New York Times reports. Success is not certain, nor is his continued tenure in the speakership. Two of Johnson’s members have threatened to file a motion to vacate, which could result in his removal, if he puts aid to Ukraine to a floor vote.

Johnson became emotional Wednesday evening when asked about his decision by a reporter, per the Washington Post. “If I operated out of fear over a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job,” Johnson said. “I can make a selfish decision and do something that’s different. But I’m doing here what I believe to be the right thing,” he added. Johnson will need Democrats’ support to pass the bills, and he won the backing of the most influential one. President Biden strongly endorsed the package on Wednesday. “I will sign this into law immediately to send a message to the world: We stand with our friends, and we won’t let Iran or Russia succeed,” Biden said.

Here’s how the bills break down:

  • Cost: The total is $95.3 billion, per the AP, same as the Senate approved in February, though the packages aren’t identical; Johnson added some provisions to appeal to GOP opponents of Ukraine aid.
  • Ukraine: More than one-third of the $61 billion would go toward replenishing weapons and ammunition systems for the US military, Republicans said. And $13.8 billion would buy weapons from the US. Johnson’s bill has $9 billion in forgivable loans; the president could set the terms or cancel the loans.
  • Israel: Aid to Israel and humanitarian relief to people in Gaza account for $26 billion, and $4 billion would go to restock Israel’s missile defenses.
  • Indo-Pacific: About $8 billion is intended to deter China’s aggression in the region.
  • Assorted: The fourth bill satisfied a Republican wish list of foreign policy priorities. The final wording wasn’t released yet, per the AP.
  • The border: The fifth piece is intended to satisfy GOP demands to strengthen security at the southern US border. It might not have worked. “Every true conservative America First patriot in the House should vote against the rule for this borrowed foreign aid bill with no border security,” Rep. Bob Good, the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, posted on social media.

Did he put his gig as Speaker on the line?

The Freedom idiots will be gunning for him and that should stall anything happening in the House for the rest of the year.

But we will hardly notice for the House does very little actual work….just slapping retaliation on the Dems in this Congress that is.

That tight rope that Johnson is trying to walk is getting a lot of slack in it….will he survive?

Is The Speaker Playing With Fire?

The Speaker of the House is trying to work a deal where Ukraine can get their hush money (stop the bitching and moaning)….but his efforts are making him a target for the band of idiots that like disrupting Congress by going to war with the Speaker.

It’s a sign of how complicated the politics of Congress are at the moment: House Speaker Mike Johnson will try to pass four different bills this week designed to send billions in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan—all while trying to keep his job as speaker.

  • The four bills: Johnson will introduce separate bills on aid to Ukraine, aid to Israel, aid to Taiwan, and a fourth one that contains a range of measures favored by the GOP such as banning TikTok, reports the Washington Post. One main goal of this “convoluted” strategy is to decouple the Ukraine and Israel components.
  • The challenges: There are many. First, Johnson “would need near-unanimous support from his own conference” even to bring the package to the floor, and it’s “far from certain” he has that, per Politico. If he clears that hurdle, success hinges “on a complicated mix of bipartisan coalitions that support different pieces, given resistance among hard-right Republicans to Ukraine funding and among left-wing Democrats to unfettered aid to Israel,” per the New York Times.
  • His speakership: Marjorie Taylor Greene has threatened to trigger a vote on ousting Johnson if he moves ahead with Ukraine aid, and she called this new plan “another wrong direction” for Johnson, reports CBS News. In response, Johnson said: “I don’t spend my time worrying about motions to vacate.” In making the case for the aid, he said: “We have terrorists and tyrants and terrible leaders around the world like Putin and Xi and in Iran, and they’re watching to see if America will stand up for its allies and our interests around the globe—and we will.” Ukraine, for example, has said it is quickly running out of military supplies, per the Post.
  • Deeper dive: All in all, this is a “gigantic gamble” by Johnson, as laid out in a detailed analysis at Punchbowl News. The plan has the potential to “blow up in his face,” reads the piece. “If the vote count starts to flag or hardliners rise up in opposition, there might be a movement to force Johnson to back away from this plan. Yet for Johnson, this scheme is the best of a lot of bad options.”

He is making few friends in the Freedom Caucus, the very ones that lead the charge to get rid of McCarthy…..and one more has joined the call….

Marjorie Taylor Greene is no longer the only Republican ready to remove Mike Johnson as House speaker. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said Tuesday he was on board, reports Politico. In fact, Massie asked Johnson to resign in a closed-door GOP session, and Johnson refused, per the Hill. Last month, Greene filed a “motion to vacate” the speaker’s post, though she hasn’t said when she might trigger an actual vote. She and others in the House Freedom Caucus accuse Johnson of working too closely with Democrats on several policy issues, and his decision to call a vote on aid to Ukraine further angered them.

Johnson: “I am not resigning and it is in my view an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are simply trying to do our job,” Johnson told reporters after the meeting, per the Wall Street Journal.

  • Massie: “The motion is going to get called, OK? Does anybody doubt that?” Massie told reporters. “And then he’s gonna lose more votes than Kevin McCarthy. And I have told him this in private, like weeks ago.” Massie reportedly told Johnson in the meeting, “You’re not going to be speaker much longer,” and Axios says many attendees booed his remarks.
  • Democrats: Should Greene call a vote, Johnson would almost certainly need the backing of Democrats to remain in his post, and some have said in recent weeks they would protect him if he brings Ukraine aid up for a vote, per the Hill.

As if the House could not get more dysfunctional these idiots have to waste even more time and energy.

What’s Up With The Speaker?

After over a year of denial and avoidance the new Speaker of the House is said to be ready to release the security footage of the 06 January insurrection (you do remember that, right?)

Of course with everything that is ‘released’ to the public I am sure some sort of editing will occur, especially since these toads on the Right denied many of the claims of the participants.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Friday he plans to publicly release thousands of hours of footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, making good on a promise he made to far-right members of his party when he was campaigning for the job. “This decision will provide millions of Americans, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media an ability to see for themselves what happened that day, rather than having to rely upon the interpretation of a small group of government officials,” Johnson said in a statement, per the AP. The newly elected speaker said the first tranche of security footage, around 90 hours, would be released on a public committee website on Friday, with the rest of the 44,000 hours expected to be posted over the next several months. In the meantime, a public viewing room will also be set up in the Capitol for viewing the footage.

For the last several months, the GOP-led House Administration Committee has made the video available by appointment only to members of the media, criminal defendants, and a limited number of other people. The video shows some of the fighting up close and gives a bird’s-eye view of the Capitol complex—one that visitors rarely see—as hundreds of former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building, violently attacking police officers and breaking in through windows and doors. By expanding this access to the general public, Johnson is fulfilling one of the pledges he made last month to the most conservative members of his party, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who orchestrated the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Both Gaetz and Trump—who’s currently running for reelection as he faces federal charges for his role in the Jan. 6 attack—applauded Johnson’s decision. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump congratulated the speaker “for having the courage and fortitude” to release the footage. The move by Johnson will grant the general public a stunning level of access to sensitive and explicit Jan. 6 security footage, which many critics have warned could endanger the safety of staff and members in the Capitol complex if it gets into the wrong hands.

Now problem is why now?

And why are those the denied anything happened on that faithful day but a peaceful collection of MAGATs?

I believe it will be piecemeal releases.

This situation will need to be monitored, in my opinion, for I believe something is going on that could change many things.

The game is afoot….that ‘shutdown’ game played every so often.

We have a new Speaker and time for him to show his stuff….and yesterday he did just that.

In what is seen as new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s first major test, he is attempting to pull off a feat that eluded predecessor Kevin McCarthy: Get a bill passed to avoid a government shutdown and keep his job. The House was expected to vote Tuesday on Johnson’s plan to pass a continuing resolution to avert a shutdown on Saturday, reports the Hill. Assuming that happens, the Senate was to move quickly as well.

  • The move: Johnson is using what Politico describes as a “parliamentary gimmick” to get his deal done. He is pushing a two-tiered funding schedule that provides money for some agencies through mid-January and others until early February, per the AP. The “laddered” funding plan has drawn plenty of critics, but it appears to have a chance. Johnson’s continuing resolution does not include steep funding cuts sought by conservatives that would have been deal-breakers to Democrats. It also puts off a decision on defense spending until the latter bracket. “We’re not surrendering, we’re fighting,” said Johnson, “but you have to be wise about choosing the fights.”
  • Needs Democrats: Johnson aims to pass the bill “under suspension of the rules,” a parliamentary maneuver that means he needs the support of two-thirds of the chamber and thus help from Democrats, per the Washington Post. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said his party was “carefully evaluating” the proposal. Other Democrats sounded happy that Johnson had avoided spending cuts or “poison pill” additions and voiced their support, per the Hill. In the Senate, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he’s on board, as is the White House, reports Politico.
  • Jobis safe? Last month, McCarthy’s stopgap deal (passed under the same fast-track process Johnson is using) got him ousted because it angered the House’s hard-right flank. The House Freedom Caucus doesn’t like Johnson’s approach either, reports the Hill, but nobody appears to be trying to push Johnson out. Instead, the caucus said it is “committed” to working with him. Why the difference? “You have to ask the people that did that, that took out the last speaker—and how they can contort themselves into now supporting this speaker making the same play call,” said GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry, who served as interim speaker after McCarthy. Hard-right Republican Rep. Chip Roy said that while he disagrees with Johnson’s approach, he “commends” him for trying to solve a difficult situation, per the Post.

And then the proof in the pudding….the vote….

A big win for new House Speaker Mike Johnson: A stopgap funding bill to prevent a government shutdown passed easily on Tuesday. The House voted 336-95 vote to approve the two-tier bill, which funds some government agencies until January and others until February, the Washington Post reports. Johnson needed Democratic votes to pass the measure, which was rejected by dozens of hard-right Republicans. The Senate is expected to pass the bill with bipartisan support before the shutdown deadline of midnight Friday, reports the AP.

That part of the saga is a done deal….how will the characters start pulling this way or that?

Let The Game Begin (Again)

It is that time again after kicking the can down the road yet again the clock is closing in on round two….and the silliness begins all over again.

The new speaker is starting the game this week….not much to report right now but I bet it gets slimy quickly.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told his GOP conference on Saturday, with just five workdays left before the deadline, that he’s decided on a plan to avoid a government shutdown. As crunch time approaches, the new speaker said, “I wasn’t the architect of the mess we are in” on the phone call, CNN reports. He pitched a two-step continuing resolution instead of the usual funding extension for the whole government. It’s an untested strategy and an attempt to mollify the hardline Republicans generally opposed to continuing resolutions, per NBC News. The proposal has no budget cuts, and it does not include military aid for Israel or Ukraine.

he first bill would fund military construction, Veterans Affairs, the Energy Department, transportation, and housing, running until Jan. 19. The second step cover the rest of the government until Feb. 2. Senators have criticized such an approach as overly complicated and difficult to enact. And House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has called the strategy a “right-wing joyride which would crash and burn the economy.” Republican GOP Rep. Chip Roy, one of the members Johnson was trying to appease, tweeted Saturday that he’s opposed to Johnson’s proposal because it lacks major spending cuts, per CNN. A House vote could happen as soon as Tuesday.

This is the opening salvo….but there is nothing about raping social programs so it is a non-starter for the idiots on the Right.

This whole tragedy will become even more messy that it has in the past….which is a shame for this is not governing just an attempt to disrupt and confuse.

I would say it will be interesting but in retrospect that would be fanciful wishing.

Yes We Have A Speaker!

Finally after weeks of agonizing BS the GOP has found a candidate of House speaker….and one that his majesty will support.

The GOP has finally found their man, Mike Johnson, to lead them forward (but that means return to the days of Tailgunner Joe)….

The fourth time was a charm for House Republicans, who on Wednesday managed to come together and get one of their own over the 217 mark. In the House’s fourth round of voting to elect a speaker following the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana—the fourth Republican nominee—managed to secure 220 votes, above the 217 needed. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries received 209. CNN reports the last GOP nominee to win the speaker’s gavel in the first vote was Paul Ryan in 2017.

Johnson, a Trump supporter, has served in the House since 2016 and has been a low-ranking member. Time reports his rise to the top is nearly unprecedented: He will be “the least experienced Speaker in 140 years, with just four terms in the House and no senior leadership roles or full committee chairmanships under his belt.” A political historian from Princeton notes there’s traditionally a preference for a lawmaker who has established plenty of connections within the House and has robust institutional knowledge, as well as a strong fundraising ability. For comparison, McCarthy’s campaign raised $28 million in the 2022 election cycle, to Johnson’s $1.3 million.

Now that the country has a brand new speaker let’s meet this ‘person’…..

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s rise from relative obscurity to being the most powerful Republican in the House was a swift one. After more than three weeks without a speaker, House Republicans elected Johnson Tuesday around 16 hours after making him their latest nominee. In a post on X, the conservative lawmaker from Louisiana promised to “restore sanity to a government desperately in need of it.” More on the least experienced House speaker in more than a century:

  • Low profile was a plus. As vice chair of the Republican conference, Johnson was considered the No. 5 Republican, but he was little known outside Capitol Hill, the Advocate reports. The 51-year-old was elected to Congress in 2016 and had less “baggage” and fewer enemies than the three previous nominees.

He’s relatively new to politics. Johnson, the son of a firefighter, represents a Louisiana district that includes Shreveport, where he grew up, Fox News reports. He didn’t enter politics until 2015, when he was elected to the state House. Before that, he was an attorney for groups including the Christian advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom. He has said he spent his legal career defending “religious freedom” and “Biblical values,” per the Advocate.

Republicans rallied behind him. The AP, describing Johnson as “affable and well liked,” reports that colleagues quickly rallied behind him after he was nominated Tuesday night. With Republicans keen to move on from the weekslong effort to elect a new speaker, he needed 217 votes and received 220.

  • He hosts a podcast with his wife. The New York Times reports that Johnson and wife Kelly have been hosting a podcast for around 18 months, featuring what they describe as “analysis of hot topics and current events from a Christian perspective.” Johnson has used the podcast to set out his anti-abortion agenda and attack the Trump prosecutions, among other things.
  • A pointed remark from a Democratic lawmaker. The Washington Post reports that when she voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Rep. Angie Craig, in an apparent reference to Johnson’s opposition to same-sex marriage declared, “Happy anniversary to my wife!”

All that flowery stuff can be summed up simply….Mike Johnson….Nerd, Bigot, Religious Extremist, Seditionist….

Here We Go Again!

Monday I wrote about the failure of Jordan to secure enough votes to become Speaker and then he dropped out of the race.

Then 8 wannabes threw their names into to the pee pee pot.

The three-week-old GOP leadership crisis could be resolved Tuesday, though some Republicans remain doubtful. House Republicans will gather at 9am ET to vote again for speaker after denying Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan. They’ll choose between the eight candidates that remained on Monday night after Rep. Dan Meuser announced he would drop out of the race. Colleagues had predicted he would receive one of the lowest vote totals on Tuesday, per Politico. In each of multiple rounds of secret voting, the candidate with the lowest vote total will be eliminated until two candidates are left or a single candidate wins a conference majority with 113 votes, per CNN. A vote on the House floor would follow.

Then the House picked one rep to be speaker….someone that has zero name recognition…..Emmer.

Republicans have picked their nominee to become the next House speaker. Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota won on the fifth ballot Tuesday, though he has the same problem as Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise before him: It’s unclear whether he can get enough votes in the full House to win the gavel, reports Politico. Perhaps his biggest political problem among fellow Republicans is that Donald Trump does not want him to be speaker, given that Emmer voted to certify President Biden’s election victory, per the AP.

Emmer, 62, is currently the No. 3 House Republican, notes the Hill. He received 117 votes in the final ballot Tuesday, enough to beat Louisiana’s Mike Johnson (97). As with Scalise and Jordan, he will probably need to secure the votes of 217 Republicans to win. “We have the same five to seven to eight that I don’t know are going to instantly gravitate” to backing Emmer, said GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa. That would likely be enough to scuttle Emmer’s chances, unless Democrats came to his aid. It’s unclear when a full House will be scheduled.

Here is one last thing to think about.

Many Republicans noted their constituents were angry after weeks of disagreement. Rep. Dusty Johnson said his constituents “just can’t believe that we’re this bad.” Rep. Vern Buchanan said his constituents “think all of us are incapable.” Some suggested this would encourage lawmakers to deliver an act of unity. “I think that we can get it done,” said Sessions. “I think that the body spoke enough about the desire that we not leave here tomorrow until we have that answer.” Yet some Republicans said they wouldn’t necessarily support the conference nominee, per CNN. GOP Rep. Vern Buchanan noted that if the speaker-designee can’t get to 217 votes, Republicans would be forced to work with Democrats “to get the government open.”

The last line may insure that he does not get enough votes….especially with yet another government shutdown threat on the horizon.

But all this drama is for naught….looks like the nominee has put his tail between his legs and slivered off…

If you blinked Tuesday afternoon, you might have missed Rep. Tom Emmer’s bid to become House speaker. Emmer, the No. 3 House Republican, was picked as the party’s third nominee in three weeks Tuesday but he abruptly dropped out around four hours later when it became clear that he couldn’t win 217 votes if there was a vote of the full House, Politico reports. Sources tell the Washington Post that numerous Republican lawmakers decided Emmer, the House majority whip, had no hope of victory after Donald Trump urged people not to support him in a post on Truth Social Tuesday afternoon.

Trump slammed Emmer, who voted to certify President Biden’s election victory, as a RINO—an acronym for “Republican in name only”—and accused him of being “totally out of touch” with the party’s voters. “Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!” Trump wrote. The former president’s post went up shortly after a meeting in which Emmer attempted to consolidate his support. Soon after the Minnesota lawmaker won the nomination, with 117 votes to 97 for Rep. Mike Johnson, around two dozen Republicans declared they wouldn’t support him, the New York Times reports.

The House has now been leaderless for three weeks and Republicans are back to square one after the failed bids of Emmer and Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan. Sources tell NBC News that Johnson and Rep. Kevin Hern are expected to appear on the Republican’s conference’s next secret ballot.

This what you get when politicians serve a master that is not the people.

Here we go again: House Republicans on Tuesday night chose their fourth nominee for Speaker of the House since Kevin McCarthy was ousted. Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana won the majority behind closed doors, and was later surrounded by supportive colleagues at a press conference who chanted, “Mike! Mike! Mike!” Johnson was nominated just hours after the third nominee, Rep. Tom Emmer, was nominated and then abruptly withdrew. A House floor vote will be held Wednesday, the AP reports. In what CBS News calls a “potential sign of trouble for Johnson,” McCarthy, who was not even a declared candidate for speaker, got 43 votes Tuesday night—more than Johnson’s actual opponent, Rep. Byron Donalds, who got 29.

Now you see why I love this stupidity?
