The Russian “Problem”

We know that there is a tug of war going on between Left and Right (not a true analogy but will work for the limited mentality of Trump followers)…..on one side Russia is an evil entity sitting there feasting on the US cyber world and then on the other hand Russia is just a fake topic meant to bring down the Dear Leader from his Ivory Tower (the White House).

But let’s look at the Russian thing…..

The United States is – still – the world’s most powerful and most wealthy country. It cannot and will not be brought to its knees by a band of alleged mercenary Russian hackers, oligarchs and intelligence operatives, though they likely had some kind of distorting effect.

No, the assault on American democracy and its global standing originated not in Moscow but in Washington, and across the length and breadth of the United States. Like the Soviet Empire before it, America is crumbling under the weight of its own contradictions, its imperial hubris, and its squandering of vast amounts of resources to enrich the very few at the expense of the very, very, very, very many – both abroad and at home.

Russia did not create Donald Trump, the brash, abrasive and corrupt opportunist and grifter.  Russia did not transform this self-centered and self-serving business tyrant into a counter-factual television and (social) media sensation, admired by millions, who has been marketing hollow image without any substance and peddling falsehoods for decades.

Russia did not put a gun to the heads of white, conservative voters and force them to elect an alleged billionaire with zero political experience and zero interest in the plight of other people as someone who would “drain the swamp” as the representative of ordinary folk.

Even suggesting that Russia was responsible for the brainwashing of the Republican electorate would be to give it way too much credit, and too little credit to homegrown propagandists, polemicists and twisters of truth. Of course, Moscow is an old hand at fake news and propaganda. But Sputnik and RT have limited reach in America and can simply not compete with the likes of Fox News and Sinclair for the hearts and minds of Middle America.

It all comes down to the US and its self-inflicted political wounds over the decades.

This Russian thing is a bit much……not to take anything away from the on-going investigations but could we move on from this…….yes there is other stuff happening around the world that could be used to fill the time on air….just a thought.

But let’s take a look…shall we?

Cold War Two is thriving, having been initiated and fostered by West and especially by the Pentagon and much of Congress, whose members benefit enormously from cash donations by weapons’ manufacturers whose generosity so far this election cycle has totaled $19,332,442 in traceable hand-outs.  The Pentagon is reported as having calculated that “overseas weapons sales by US firms rose $8.3 billion from 2016 to 2017, with American arms makers moving a total of $41.9 billion in advanced weaponry to foreign militaries last year.”  There is profit in supporting confrontation.

Development of the new Cold War was described succinctly in February 2018 by Stephen F Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian Studies and Politics at NYU and Princeton, in that “[President] Clinton pursued winner-take-all policies consistent with viewing Russia as a defeated power, presiding over a massive intrusive crusade to shape that former rival into ‘the Russia we want’;  beginning the expansion of NATO, now on Russia’s borders; and bombing Moscow’s traditional Slav ally Serbia in 1999, despite Yeltsin’s protests. Indeed, the extreme vilification of Putin by former members of the Clinton administration, including Hillary Clinton, who equated him with Hitler, are not unrelated to their unwise Russia policies of the 1990s — loudly applauded, it should be added, by media journalists now also in the forefront of demonizing the current Kremlin leader.”

It Slowly Goes To Hell

I am watching the country slowly go to Hell……and parts of society does not care because it has gotten so hateful that it will allow the destruction of a Great Society…..

Since the end of the Cold War, it has widely been assumed that U.S. foreign policy would follow one of two courses: Either the United States would continue as primary defender of the international order it created after World War II, or it would pull back from overseas commitments, shed global responsibilities, turn inward and begin transitioning to a post- American world. The second approach was where U.S. foreign policy seemed headed under President Barack Obama, and most saw the election of Donald Trump as another step toward withdrawal.

It turns out there was a third option: the United States as rogue superpower, neither isolationist nor internationalist, neither withdrawing nor in decline, but active, powerful and entirely out for itself. In recent months, on tradeIranNATO defense spending and perhaps even North Korea, President Trump has shown that a president willing to throw off the moral, ideological and strategic constraints that limited U.S. action in the past can bend this intractable world to his will, at least for a while.

And the hard core Right is itching for a fight…..a possible civil war….does anyone remember how that turned out the last time?

The backlash to the Trump administration caging immigrant children has led to store owners asking White House officials to not eat in their restaurants and to protesters publicly confronting those supporting Trump’s policies. Now, voices on the far-right are increasingly unified in their only solution to the matter: civil war.

While several far-right figures have been speculating about a looming U.S. break-up for some time, recent rhetoric is a marked escalation from even a few months ago, when certain historical illiterates were only calling for an “amicable divorce.”

A civil war has been predicted since the days of Wallace for president and is it possible that it will finally come to light?

Was The Election Rigged?

I would bet that some Right wing dullard is rolling his/her eyes for they think this is a post about the election that brought Trump to the height of power, the presidency of the United States.

Well as much as I hate to pee on their parade…it is not about their man crush…….

Most of my regular visitors know that I like some history and I truly enjoy imparting a little knowledge to them…..and this is a little knowledge on some contentious elections in our past…..

“There is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow that you could even rig America’s elections, in part because they are so decentralized and the number of votes that are cast,” the president added. “There is no evidence that has happened in the past, or instances that will happen this year.”

While such complaints have been rare before votes were cast, they were very prominent in certain post-presidential elections, as was evidence that votes weren’t always counted properly.

I do enjoy this stuff….hopefully my reader learned something that they may not have known…..

GOP Wassup?

DC is awash with chaos.  The rebellion is lead (in a way) by Flake, Corker and McCain and according to Trumpites these men are RINOs.

RINOs simply because they will not stand by and let Trump ruin this country.

If we therm I would wear the badge proudly.

But it makes perfect sense….a label from a group that thinks in labels and slogans.

The problem is most “conservatives” today would not know conservatism if it bit them in the ass.

Maybe it is time to re-think Burke and conservatism…….

Conservatives are engaged in deep introspection these days. As they reconsider their direction, they would do well to look back to the formative period of their movement. They may find something there of great value—something many conservatives think their movement embraced, but in truth rejected.

By 1952, liberal candidates had not only captured the last five Democratic presidential nominations but the past five Republican nominations as well. Most observers considered conservatism dead—a philosophy unsuited for modern times. A small number of intellectuals disagreed. They believed that—if redefined—conservatism might be resuscitated. But they passionately disagreed about how it should be redefined.

2017–Sh*t Happens

Does anyone remember back to the Dark Ages……the Obama years?  2009 the Dems would try to hold their local town halls for a meet and greet with their voters…..they were disastrous….yelling, screaming, chanting and other assorted chaotic meetings.

My my….how history repeats itself.

The Dems were spineless in their 2009 town halls and in 2017 the Repubs have gone spineless at their town halls…..

Republican lawmakers around the country are facing tough and often angry questions from constituents who are packing town hall meetings or showing up at their offices.

Among their grievances is that the GOP plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” with no replacement.

The pushback echoes the same raucous confrontations that Democrats faced in 2009, when tea party activists sprang into action to oppose what they saw as dangerous government overreach by President Barack Obama.

Fascinating!  Both parties catching grief over the same subject only 8 years apart.

What does this tell us?

One, the politicians are finding ways to avoid the voter.

Two, politicians regardless the party are spineless.

In Search Of A ‘Reichstag Fire’ Moment

Recent situations have shown that Trump’s presidency is not as popular as some bloggers and writers would have you believe…..

Trump has had purges, would be scandals, bad press and a meltdown over Twitter, massive protests…….he needs an occurrence to get his presidency on track……

He, Trump, needs something that can change the road that his presidency is traveling…..a little of my now famous historical perspective would fit nicely…….

Given his serious unpopularity, an incident for illegal power grab is increasingly a dangerous possibility.

Donald Trump and his top Islamophobe nomenklatura gathered at the White House, now led by the militant crusader Stephen Bannon, are on a desperate lookout for their “Reichstag Fire” and their favourite propaganda outlet, Fox News, is franticly searching for it – even in Canada.

“Reichstag Fire” was an arson attack on the Reichstag, the German parliament, in Berlin on February 27, 1933. The incident was soon abused by Adolf Hitler and his gang to demand a suspension of civil liberties in systematic preparation for his putsch for total fascist power.

Please if any of the Right wing bloggers read this…I am NOT calling Trump a fascist….only that he needs something like the “fire” to sway the people to his visions.

Why Conspiracy Theories Flourish?

Have you noticed that since the early 1990’s conspiracy theories are spread around like manure on a garden?

And since the election of Obama then internet went batcrap crazy with this theory and that…..to the point where I prefer to stick to news, whether I like it or not.

I remember back in the day with the fluoride thing and the “grassy Knoll” thingy and the ever popular fake Moon landing……and since those that were to some extent believable we have had a wealth of “out there” conspiracies…..like 9/11, chem trails, etc……

Most of these conspiracies originate on the Right….but that is NOT saying they are the only ones with “out there” conspiracies….just they seem to have one for just about every situation.

The question now is ……how and why can these conspiracy theories flourish?

New research identifies the sorts of people attracted to conspiracies. They sound familiar.

Hillary Clinton recently caught pneumonia, which would be a fairly unremarkable fact if dark tales about her health had not circulated among conservatives for years. Naturally it prompted another round of loopy speculation, highlighting yet again one of the more striking developments in US politics in the Obama era: the increasing prominence of conspiracy theories on the right.

Dark conspiracies have always been a part of politics, of course, on both sides of the aisle (see: 9/11 truthers). But since Obama was elected, conservative media and activists have pushed the right’s conspiracy theories squarely into the mainstream of the party. Obama is a secret Muslim, he’s planning a coup in Jade Helm, he tried to nuke Charleston, SC (seriously) … the list could go on and on. Turn on a conservative talk radio show and there’s probably a new one floating around as we speak.

I realize there are some theories that people would like to be true and will defend them relentlessly…..I wish would like to see people research these theories completely…..not just the research that will agree with their premises.

What is that old saying….”People will believe that which is easiest to grasp”…..

Trump militia forms

After writing the previous post and posting it I came across another article that plays along the lines of the post…..

I have been watching this drama play out…..the hate on both sides of the Trump thing is getting out of hand….and now that the violence has seem to pick up to a feverish pitch……..how to control the violence?  Is there a solution?

But then I read the article below and became more disturbed…….why?

Sounds a lot like the formation of the Brown Shirts in 1920’s Germany…..they were a “militia” that was used to “protect” the leadership…..and to incite violence at other party functions….

This is NOT a good thing to occur.

Iraq Descends Into Chaos

For those that have put Iraq out of their minds……

But this time it is political chaos which could lead to further violence……chaos has been the norm for Iraq since 2003 and now with the conflict against ISIS why would it be any different than in the past?

This takeaway provided by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)……..

The political crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan caused by delayed Presidential elections descended into outright political violence on October 8. Regional President Masoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), has continued to hold office even though his term expired on August 19 and no elections have occurred. Other Iraqi Kurdish political parties, particularly Gorran (Change), the KDP’s main political rival, tried to contest the extension of Barzani’s term and leverage concessions in return for his continuation in office. Popular protests against the government turned violent on October 9 after multi-party talks collapsed the day before. On October 11, the KDP ordered the speaker and other members of the Kurdish parliament from Gorran to leave the regional capital of Arbil, declaring that Gorran was no longer a part of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Gunmen loyal to the KDP barred a Gorran convoy from entering Arbil. This dangerous maneuver by the KDP to solidify Barzani’s position as regional president has escalated tensions within the KRG and serious political violence may protract. Unless negotiations between the KDP and the opposition parties reaches a meaningful compromise in short order, the KRG could split or collapse as opposition leaders move their operations from the seat of government in Arbil to Suleimaniyah.

This time it is in the region of the Kurds in North east Iraq…..a once fairly stable region but that was yesterday……the Kurds, the most reliable combatant against ISIS, is in the middle of some sort of political upheaval…..

The parliament speaker and ministers are all members of the Gorran party, which the dominant Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) accuses of orchestrating violent protests that resulted in five deaths.

The unrest is the most serious the relatively peaceful region has seen in years and could undermine its effectiveness in the war against Islamic State, in which it is a key ally of the U.S.-led coalition.

The ministers of religious affairs, finance, trade, and peshmerga forces on Monday met Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani who “asked them to leave their posts”, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesman Safeen Dizayee told Reuters.

Keep in mind the peshmerga forces are the forces that are fighting ISIS tooth and nail and now their leader has been bumped from the government……how will this effect the fighting capability of the pershmerga?

Also to watch is the complaint that Kurds have had that the US is backing-off on the promises of arms and supplies……

Source: The Kurdish-Islamic State Problem

There is also the fact that Turkish airstrikes in Iraq have targeted Kurdish sites and not so much those of ISIS…

There are those that are predicting a big problem brewing in the region…….

Source: The Kurdish Problem | The National Interest

All this just illustrates that problems will be an inherent part of Iraq for decades to come…..and the once victorious Kurds are not immune to the chaos….no matter how well they fight ISIS……

Most Americans show a serious lack of interest in the dealings in Iraq…..we have become insulted from the chaotic nature of the region……the media is doing the public NO favors by downplaying the situation in the Middle East…….

Just another incident that could well come back and bite the US in the ass….like so many events in the region……..lose focus……..prepare for the bite with lockjaw!

Regional Powers Making a Mess of the Middle East | Al Jazeera America

To be honest the Middle East has been a mess since the end of World War one and the powers that came up with the arbitrary boundaries of once non-existent nations…….it has seldom been a region at rest.

Beginning in 2003 it has become a melting pot of chaos and violence……the fabricated nations of the region are at each others throats now
