Enjoy Juneteenth!

Closing Thought–18Jun21

Today is Juneteenth…..Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

The US Senate has passed the bill that would make this a Federal holiday…..

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Biden for his signature, the AP reports. Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn’t reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas. That was also about two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

“Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.” The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements. GOP Sen. Ron Johnson had objected in the previous Congress to a bill to celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday because of the cost, but he said Tuesday that “it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter.” The bill was sponsored by Democratic Sen. Edward Markey and had 60 co-sponsors.

Biden will sign and it will become the 12th Federal holiday.

It is now official!

Enjoy your long weekend….

Closing Thought–24Dec20

The big day is coming…..

Tomorrow is a big day….you decide in what way…….and there has been a food warning issued for those that participate in a holiday tradition….the delicious sounding ‘cannibal sandwich’.

“Cannibal sandwiches” are a holiday tradition in Wisconsin, and if the name alarms you, the state’s health authorities say you’re on the right track. The sandwiches involve raw ground beef, and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Saturday issued its “annual reminder” that eating raw meat is never a good idea. Indulging in the sandwiches, also sometimes called “Tiger Meat,” “poses a threat for Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter, and Listeria bacteria that can make you sick. (And, no, it doesn’t matter where you buy your beef!)” the department warns. A Milwaukee historian has previously explained to Fox 6 that German, Polish, and other ethnic communities in that area have been indulging in the sandwiches at festive gatherings since the 19th century.

USA Today reports eight outbreaks in the state have been linked to eating raw ground beef since 1986, and the USDA said in 2018 that hundreds in the Midwest get sick each year after eating the sandwiches. Versions are also made with raw venison, lamb, or bacon, and are sometimes topped with raw egg yolk. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that same year took a look at the, er, delicacy, in which “freshly ground raw beef and raw onions” is sandwiched between slices of rye bread. “We want 100% lean beef, super fresh, no injections, no chemicals in it,” said the owner of one restaurant that brings someone in to grind the beef as sandwiches are ordered. “We let people season their own. Usually they’ll get the onion and the salt and pepper and a nice beer.” The USDA suggests people use the same spices and onion and simply cook the beef: “You may be surprised to find that it tastes better.”

Sorry but it sounds like something I would avoid even without the warning issued.

Please enjoy your day tomorrow

May you enjoy all the joys of the season.

Merry Christmas my friends.

‘War On Christmas’ Returns

One final thought on this Eve of the Big Day…..some things are constant…..war, taxes and the war on Christmas BS…..(not to worry there is a Closing Thought to come)……

For the most part the last 4 years we have been spared the bullshit about some fictional war on Christmas and those people that have a problem with Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings…….but now we have a president-elect and it is not the orange idiot and the rhetoric about Christmas will return…..

AS we get closer to the day the morons have started already….this time it is Rep. Gym Jordan, the Trump sycophant with the MAGA knee pads…..Remember Gym…..He is the coach that looked the other way while wrestlers were being abused……

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, on Twitter Friday with a post that many critics mockingly suggested could be a parody.

Fauci has warned that Americans should “avoid travel and avoid congregate settings” over the holidays in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which is raging across the country and has killed more than 275,000 Americans.

Jordan’s response: “What will he cancel next? Saying Merry Christmas?”

And so it begins…..

Actually the supposed ‘War on Christmas’ was started many years ago…..almost 400 years ago Christmas was banned in the UK…..

Back in 1647, Christmas was banned in the kingdoms of England (which at the time included Wales), Scotland and Ireland and it didn’t work out very well. Following a total ban on everything festive, from decorations to gatherings, rebellions broke out across the country. While some activity took the form of hanging holly in defiance, other action was far more radical and went on to have historical consequences.

Labour Day 2020: History, Importance and Significance of May Day

As usual the Old Professor has a history lesson and a touch of sociology for you on this day that celebrates work…..

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on U.S. employment is dire. Economists estimate that 1 in 5 workers have lost their jobs. As a result, many people are finding it difficult to keep a roof overhead and put food on the table. Yet there can be more to work, and Labor Day provides an opportunity to see how through the writings of a woman who thought especially deeply about it, Simone Weil.

Weil looked at work as more than an exchange of money for labor. She argued that people need to work not only for income but also for the experience of labor itself. From her perspective, money does not solve the core problems of joblessness. Instead, work provides vital opportunities to live more fully by helping others.

Because it is a lazy day does not mean that something cannot be learned…..

Today will be a short day for me and I need to step away from the keyboard for awhile…..and what better day then Labor Day….

I hope all my regulars have a great day.

I will be grilling and drinking beer……a person has got to have some fun once in awhile…..

So until tomorrow…..I will return to my regularly scheduled posting….but until then…TTFN!

04 July 2020

I want to take a moment and wish that all my readers have a fun and safe Fourth….

Fourth Of July Community Hours - Cameron Station

Most Americans know what happened on this day in history…..the DoI was signed as the story goes…..but more has happened on this day…..

1712–12 slaves are executed in New York for killing 9 whites in an uprising.

1817–construction stared on the Erie Canal to link Lake Erie and the Hudson River.

1826–two Founding Fathers Die—-Jefferson and Adams.

1831–5th president James Monroe dies.

1863–Vicksburg surrenders to the forces of the Union.

1881–Billy the Kid is killed in New Mexico territory.

1894–After ceasing power Judge Standford Dole declares Hawaii a republic.

1910–Race riots break out all over the United States after African American Jack Johnson knocks out Jim Jeffries in a heavyweight boxing match.

There is a small history lesson for the day.

Then the news of the day……

Donald Trump’s early July 4th celebration had little to do with uniting America in a time of trouble and pain. Instead the gathering at Mount Rushmore was just a Trump campaign rally in disguise where the Great Leader spat out his usual themes of racism, neofascism, authoritarianism, ignorance, violence, Orwellian doublespeak and lies, Christian fascism, white identity politics, and other right-wing dreck to his red hat MAGA political cult members.

On this Fourth of July weekend Donald Trump is grandly reminding the world that patriotism is the last refuge of traitors and scoundrels. Trump may wrap himself in the American flag and other vestments of “patriotism,” but his heart and mind are truly of the antebellum South and Jim and Jane Crow America. Trump claims to be a greater president than Abraham Lincoln. Trump in his delusions believes he is as great as George Washington. But Donald Trump is really a 21st-century Jefferson Davis, president of the treasonous Confederacy. May he be remembered in the same ignominious fashion.

The best thing was an illustration of just how STUPID MAGA people truly are……A MAGA hat wearing dolt in South Dakota yelled at an NA protesting Trump’s visit “Go Home”…..

Oglala Sioux protesters were arrested protesting against President Donald Trump’s Independence Day event at Mount Rushmore on Friday.

The protesters argued that it is their land after the Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1868, which was ratified by the U.S. Senate.

Memorial Day 2020

Closing Thought–30May20

When do we celebrate Decoration Day?

Google is just a click away.

For those that were too lazy even for Google…..

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2020 occurs on Monday, May 25.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

I am an old fart…I still remember on the day it is suppose to be remembered….

Let us start having an honest dialog about military service…..

For decades, pundits have gravely wagged their fingers at Americans for trivializing Memorial Day. Rather than reflecting in mournful solemnity on the many thousands who have lost their lives in service of their country, Americans instead — according to the usual chargedesecrate their memories by rushing to take advantage of the latest sales, guzzling down beer, and gorging themselves on hot dogs. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sales this year will (hopefully) be more sparsely attended, when they are held at all. The barbeques will mostly be limited to backyards, with just immediate family in attendance. The rhetoric of heroism and sacrifice will still be in the air, but now attached as much to health care workers as to uniformed service members. As we celebrate a Memorial Day like no other in recent memory, perhaps our pandemical circumstances can inspire more serious and meaningful observance of this day.
