Closing Thought–02Feb18

I live in the great state of Mississippi, the Magnolia State, the home of the blues….birthplace of Bo Didley, Elvis Presley and many other great musicians……

I have pointed out of the years that Mississippi seems to always be at the top of everything bad and the bottom of everything good….for instance Mississippi is the most littered state…the top state for diabetes…so on and so on….

And we can add one more issue to the worst list……Mississippi is the least educated state……

A good education often brings greater chances of employment as well as higher income potential—two perks that residents of Mississippi and West Virginia might be at a disadvantage of attaining. That’s based on a list of the most and least educated states in the US, compiled by Wallet Hub, which puts those two at the bottom. Here are the top five in each category, with a score out of 100, based on quality of education and the educational attainment of adults 25 and older:

Most educated (with score out 100):

  1. Massachusetts: 82
  2. Maryland: 76.5
  3. Connecticut: 72
  4. Vermont: 71
  5. Colorado: 70

Least educated:

  1. Mississippi: 21
  2. West Virginia: 22
  3. Louisiana: 23
  4. Arkansas: 27
  5. Alabama: 31

The G I Bill

When I left the US Army in 1971 I wanted to use my GI Bill benefits for my education….the only thing that I ever asked of my country for my service…..I got the education I wanted and think that all service people should have a good GI Bill.

The Trump admin has signed into law a new GI Bill…..

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law an updated veterans’ education bill that marks the largest expansion of college assistance for military veterans in a decade.

The Forever GI Act immediately removed a 15-year time limit on the use of GI benefits. The measure also increases financial assistance for thousands serving in the National Guard and Reserve, building on a 2008 law that guaranteed veterans a full-ride scholarship to any in-state public university, or a similar cash amount to attend private colleges.

Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, who joined Trump for the signing, said the new law also provides benefits to Purple Heart recipients whose injuries forced them to leave the service. Benefits can also now be transferred to the eligible dependent of service members who are killed in the line of duty.

Veterans would get additional payments for completing science, technology and engineering courses, part of a broad effort to better prepare veterans for life after active-duty service amid a fast-changing job market. The law also restores benefits if a college closes in the middle of the semester, a protection that was added after thousands of veterans were hurt by the collapse of for-profit college giant ITT Technical Institute and Corinthian Colleges.

“This is expanding our ability to support our veterans in getting education,” Shulkin told reporters at a briefing after Trump signed the measure at his New Jersey golf club upon returning there after two nights at his home at New York’s Trump Tower. Journalists were not permitted to watch Trump sign the bill, as the White House has done for earlier veterans’ legislation he has turned into law. That includes a measure Trump signed at the club Saturday to provide nearly $4 billion in emergency funding for a temporary veterans health care program.

Glad to see that the troops are still foremost on the minds of our government….

It falls short of what I wanted to see…..the first four years of a public college would be free as long as a C+ average was maintained.  I believe that is a small price to pay for what we ask our troops to accomplish.

How Important Is Education?

To me the answer is…..an absolute necessity.

When I left the service of my country I asked for one thing and one thing only…..an education….and I was fortune enough to get my request.  So education in my book should be free and public from K-12….it should NOT be a money making industry….period.

Pres. trump has made his selection for Sec of Education…..and what do we know about her…yes he chose a woman…..

Education will be set back a 100 years…..once again it will be the wealthy and privileged that get the good education…..

But her best statement….was this……

Now that we know President-elect Donald Trump has tapped right-wing megadonor Betsy DeVos as his pick to lead the Department of Education, now is a good time to examine some of the many shady organizations she’s funded.

One such organization is the Acton Institute, a think tank on whose board DeVos has served, and whose self-described goal is “to promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles.”

And one way to promote a virtuous society, it seems, is to bring back child labor.

I do not see the GOP in Congress growing a set of nuts and challenging Trump on much at all….

I was giving Trump some time to make his picks…..but so far I have little confidence that this will be an admin for ALL Americans.

Bernie On Education

For me the issue of education is one of the most important domestic issues…..we hear lots of blah blah blah on education but few have any idea how to make it as important as it should be……

To be honest….I am a Bernie supporter….I like his ideas….not all of them but the important ones on domestic issues….I like…..

I read a good piece on his ideas on public education……I will share….

Time for all the lies about teachers unions and BS to end….time to make education the most important issue….domestic issue…..without it and we will have the characters in the movie “Idiocracy”……

Is An Education Really An Education?

Soon we will be bombarded with all kinds of education stories……soon we will be in the midst of “Education Nation”……we will hear all about the charter school that is making a difference but NOTHING about the ones that are screwing the system or are just flat out failures…..we will listen to how well these programs are working and NOTHING about just how awful the education system really is……we will hear a lot….most of which is pure MANURE!

An education was designed primarily to instruct the student on his/her society, government and to prepare them to move on to college with instruction in science, math, language and other necessary courses so that they can make informed decisions in their future.  But now all that is changing and not for the better…..

Let me back up a bit….I know there are some things in our history that are not to attractive….like when Jefferson tucked tail and ran from the British when he was governor or the ugliness of the civil rights era or that Washington started the French & Indian War by ambushing and killing a diplomatic mission …..well you pick one or so.  But those are things we need to know so that we do not let them ever happen again and it has made us a stronger people.  But it seems that states are not too thrilled with true history and want to re-write it to their liking and then to force feed it to our children…..

The board goes on to remove the word “slavery” from the standards, replacing it with the more benign-seeming “Atlantic triangular trade.” They insist on calling the United States a “constitutional republic” rather than a “democracy” – largely because they want students to think of their country as Republican, not Democratic. So convinced are they of the timeless superiority of American/Republican values that one of them introduces a standard asking students to “explain three pro-free-market factors contributing to European technological progress during the rise and decline of the medieval system.”

Historical figures of suspect religious views (like Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin) or political tendency (like union organizer Dolores Huerta) are ruthlessly demoted or purged altogether from the study program. Meanwhile, the board majority makes room for an eclectic array of ancillary figures from the revolutionary period, such as Charles Carroll and Jonathan Trumbull. What these marginal figures have in common, other than being dusted off from high shelves and promoted by the board, is the fact that they were loud defenders of orthodox Christianity.

Several changes include sidelining Thomas Jefferson, who favoured separation of church and state, while introducing a new focus on the “significant contributions” of pro-slavery Confederate leaders during the civil war.

The new curriculum asserts that “the right to keep and bear arms” is an important element of a democratic society. Study of Sir Isaac Newton is dropped in favour of examining scientific advances through military technology.

As a political historian I find it disgusting to write history to your liking……and then there are people that think like this…….

“We are fighting for our children’s education and our nation’s future,” Dunbar said. “In Texas we have certain statutory obligations to promote patriotism and to promote the free enterprise system. There seems to have been a move away from a patriotic ideology. There seems to be a denial that this was a nation founded under God. We had to go back and make some corrections.”

NO!  You have an obligation to teach the TRUTH……no matter how it smells.  STOP using children as a political prop……ever noticed that children like vets are only important as a prop to get one’s way?

I know no one wants to hear this…..but what they are doing is….INDOCTRINATION!  This from my previous post, Propaganda 2.0………

Rewriting History. This is another way of saying that propagandists make the facts fit their worldview. The Downing Street Memos on the Iraq war were a classic example of this on a massive scale, but it happens daily and over smaller issues as well. A recent case in point is Palin’s mangling of the Paul Revere ride, which Fox reporters have bent over backward to validate. Why lie about the historical facts, even when they can be demonstrated to be false? Well, because dogmatic minds actually find it easier to reject reality than to update their viewpoints. They will literally rewrite history if it serves their interests. And they’ll often speak with such authority that the casual viewer will be tempted to question what they knew as fact.

This is what is happening……my grandfather always said, ‘the truth is open to debate, but the facts speak for themselves’………..

Most Americans agree that education is one of the most important issues of our time…….but do they mean it?

It is primary and secondary schools  that students learn their core values and attitudes that will determine their behavior once their schooling is finished.  And some of these efforts are directly aimed at the ideology that some want to see…not what is best.

Education will continue to decline until there is found a system that is more equitable to all…and when students are taught to think …not memorize and that cannot happen as long as profit is the big motivator.

Keeping with the topic of the day…..I am in opposition to an educational system that is motivated by profits…….educational reform is just that……all presidents have tried and failed to get a descent system in place……but it seems to always come down to privatization as the only answer…..and our kids suffer……a job well done (sarcasm)……

It is time to lay the blame for the poor education in the US…it is NOT the teachers….it is NOT the unions…..it is the….GOVERNMENT with all their “reforms” that has done nothing to improve the education of children……

Creative Education

Every year we have the “Education Nation”….that is when millionaires get together and tell us all about the advances in education, all the new ideas and all the need for good education.  And every year it is nothing but talk….nothing gets done and educational programs get cut, both federal and state programs…..but yet it is the most important issue in every campaign….and then it is quickly forgotten once the election is over…….typical American problem solving.

But one school has found a creative way to see that students make good grades……..

(Newser) – Tennessee Virtual Academy, a for-profit, online public school heavily supported by state Republicans, has found a novel way of boosting student performance—just delete bad grades, reports News Channel 5 in Nashville. A leaked December email from the school’s VP appears to tell its middle-school teachers to erase some scores that don’t measure up. “If you have given an assignment and most of your students failed that assignment, then you need to take that grade out,” it reads.

“To me, this appears like it’s grade fixing,” said one Democratic state representative. Virginia-based parent company K12 is refusing to talk, but the TVA principal said the deletions were intended to “more accurately recognize students’ current progress.” But as the two-year-old school will receive $7.5 million in funding from the state this year, many Tennessee lawmakers are outraged. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that a House bill that proposed shutting the school altogether was killed yesterday; a second was passed by the House Education Subcommittee. It would allow the state to shutter a virtual school that records sub-standard student performance two years in a row. (Meanwhile, a Lehigh University student is suing over a bad grade.)

There you go…save money on educational programs and just gaming the grades…..sounds like a plan we Americans can embrace…….the easy way out!

Drug Testing Students

Since the days my daughter was in high school there has been schemes upon schemes by well meaning school officials to curb drug use by our students……..and it seems nothing has changed…….back in my daughter’s school days I thought that this was an invasion of her privacy and did not support it…….and now I see that Missouri have renewed this plan…….

(Newser) – One Kansas City high school is taking the war on drugs to the next level. Beginning this fall, Rockhurst High School will require students to submit their hair for random drug tests, reports KSHB. In a somewhat bizarre-sounding process, a staff member who happens to be a barber will cut about 60 strands from randomly selected students’ heads or bodies. (KSHB helpfully clarifies that hair in private areas will not be touched.) The Jesuit institution will then test for everything from cocaine and PCP to pot and signs of binge drinking; the test is said to be able to identify consumption in the last 90 days.

Positive tests will result in the student’s guidance counselor bringing in the parents and student for a discussion, to “get him help if necessary,” says Rockhurst’s principal. The school administration will not be informed of positive tests nor will universities find out. “Nothing prohibits it,” the legal director for the ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri tells CBS News. “But it is a colossal waste of money.”

In my daughter’s case they were going to test her randomly without seeking permission from me…….well, that did not sit well with my rebel mind……immediately I started feeding her massive amounts of poppy seeds….dressings, muffins, etc………this went on for about 3 months until she was chosen for the test and it came back that she was abusing opiates……I got a call to show up in the principal’s office……I allowed the dude tell me all about the program, the tests and finally he got to the results of my daughter’s test results….he paused and I asked, “are you positive about the results?”  He replied, “Yes, I am afraid so”…….I waited a long minute and looked at my daughter and said, “Can you believe how easy this was?”  The principal looked puzzled and I told him that since he did not have my permission and that I did not want to sue instead  I would make a sham of his moronic tests and explained what I had done and left with my daughter for a well deserved banana split.  My closing statement was…..”do not ever touch my daughter again!”

I never had any more problems with the school or the principal.
