Mississippi Reinvents Slavery

Another trip down memory lane, history to be exact, for my state of Mississippi.

A state that still tries to deny the effects of slavery.

There is a common myth that Mississippi fought in the Civil War over taxation…….but in their statement of session tells a different story (and the true reason why)….in their own words….

In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery– the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

But do not take my word for it….read the actual document for yourself….

Here when I was in school you could not graduate if you had not taken Mississippi history….but that course left a whole lot out of the class….like the Republic of West Florida, Free State of Jones, and the ‘Black Codes’…..

“Black Codes?  Yep it was Mississippi’s way of trying to reinvent slavery….

On November 25, 1865, Mississippi created the first of the Black Codes. Designed to re-create slavery in all but name, this signified the white South’s massive resistance to the freeing of their labor force and the lengths to which it would go to tie workers to a place under white control.

Remember, the point of slavery was labor. If anything, we don’t talk about this enough. Yes of course it was racist, but the whole reason was to have a permanent labor force. Whites would do anything to create that labor force. And they did, engaging in crimes against humanity for hundreds of years. They had no intention of letting the end of technical slavery get in the way of labor control.

The impact of slavery’s end is hard to overestimate. But the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves immediately, and the ratification of the 13th Amendment did not take place until well after the war’s end. The federal government was woefully unprepared, both in manpower and ideas, for ensuring that the rights of ex-slaves were respected after the war. Sure, slavery might be technically dead as of April 14, 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, but was the US military there to enforce freedom on the plantations? Largely, no.

The Black Codes thus intended to trap Black labor in place. The plantation elite’s top goal immediately upon emancipation was to corral Black labor, whose core goal was to avoid the plantation labor system, preferably replacing it with small farms they owned. The Black Codes intended to prevent this. Building upon the slave codes regulating Black behavior, and especially Black movement, before the war, the Black Codes were the South’s statement to the North that the end of the war did not mean the end of white supremacy. Black people would have to show a written contract of employment at the start of each year, ensuring they were laboring for a white employer. At the core of the Mississippi code and copied around the South was the vagrancy provision. “Vagrancy” was a term long used in the United States to crack down on workers not doing what employers or the police wanted them to do. In this case, it meant not working for a white person. Decades later, a vagrancy charge was a great way for authorities to imprison union organizers.

Mississippi did not allow Black people to rent land for themselves. Rather, all Black people in rural areas were required to labor for a white under one-year contracts. They did not have the option to quit working for that white person. If a Black person in the countryside was found not working for a white person, the state would contract that worker out to a private landowner and receive a portion of their wages. If a Black person could not pay high taxes levied on them by the state, they would be charged with vagrancy and the same process would result. As during slavery, any white person could legally arrest any Black person.

You see the Emancipation Proclamation may have freed the slaves in word but not so much in deed.

Some of these ‘Black Codes’ hung around until the 1980s and there are still some that refuse to believe that slavery was all that bad to this day.

Few are taught these parts of the state’s history and that is truly sad.

The Story Of LA

Every swinging dick in this country has seen the doings in LA and everyone has an opinion on the causes of any violence……but the real dangers did not show up until the National Guard was ordered in to assist the police.

After about 10 days of protests and curfews the mayor of LA has lifted the curfew….

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass lifted a curfew in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday that was first imposed in response to clashes with police and vandalism amid protests against President Trump’s immigration crackdown in the city. The curfew imposed June 10 provided “successful crime prevention and suppression efforts” and protected stores, restaurants, businesses, and residents from people engaging in vandalism, the Democratic mayor said. “I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed,” Bass said, per the Los Angeles Times. LAPD Police Chief Jim McDonnell said police plan to maintain a “strong presence” downtown.”

That means the confrontations are getting milder (for now)….but there is something that needs to see the light of day…..

The members of the National Guard have not been paid nor can they access the health care system……

Thousands of National Guard soldiers were deployed by President Donald Trump to the Los Angeles ICE raid protests—4,000 of them haven’t been paid and can’t access their military-provided health insurance, Tricare.

That’s because the service members haven’t received official activation orders, according to a report by Military.com—a news service covering the armed forces. Activation orders are “the critical paperwork that not only authorizes their duty status, but also unlocks pay, Tricare health benefits, and eligibility for Department of Veterans Affairs services,” the publication says.

President Trump issued the order sending the Guard to protect federal buildings in the city, but the paperwork has been delayed. Without those official documents, service members cannot be onboarded and receive compensation. Four dozen National Guard members in four different units told the publication they haven’t been paid and are worried about receiving benefits. The urgency of their deployment has been “chaotic” and “clogged up the flow of administrative work,” according to military administrators who spoke to the publication on background.

Pentagon officials estimate troops will be in L.A. for 60 days. Bryn MacDonnell, an undersecretary of defense in the comptroller’s office, said at a House budget hearing last week that the cost of deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles will be $134 million. It’s also likely that part-time soldiers will be deployed in domestic missions more often, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a National Guard veteran, said during the hearing.

“I think we’re entering another phase, especially under President Trump with his focus on the homeland, where the National Guard and reserves become a critical component of how we secure that homeland,” Hegseth told lawmakers.

Hogsbreath is a moron.

There is no documentation will there ever be that?

So were they activated without official orders?

Is this a continuation of the Donny goose step policies?

This situation is uncalled for and was most likely the cause of any escalation that occurred.

The Death Of Diplomacy

Since Donny took office…the US has threatened Canada and Greenland, allowed the genocide in Gaza and the theft in the West Bank to go unchecked and now is trying to involve the nation in the stupidity that Israel has wrought.

What has happened to diplomacy?

The art of negotiation to settle international conflicts has died and it began with the Trump’s first try at world domination with some random oil guy in charge the came Biden and his SecState Blinken who was more warmonger than anything and now we have Rubio under the second Trump directorate…. in essence diplomacy is no longer and option on the world stage.

This brings us to today’s State Department under the ‘leadership’ of Rubio and under his hand the department is dying slowly on the whims of the self-promoter Donny.

There is no more important or prestigious cabinet position than the secretary of state. The first secretaries included such luminaries as Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Henry Clay. All became presidents or almost reached the presidency. In contemporary times, secretaries of state included Henry Stimson, George Marshall, Dean Acheson, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, and John Kerry. More recent secretaries have been less competent or successful (Rex Tillerson, Mike Pompeo), but no one has been more pathetic than the current secretary, Marco Rubio, who has embarrassed the country, the Department of State, and particularly himself in the first 100 days of the Trump presidency.

Rubio has made the Department of State virtually irrelevant, playing no role in key negotiations involving wars between Russia and Ukraine as well as between Israel and the Palestinians. Rubio is not participating in the sensitive talks between the United States and Iran to restore the Iran nuclear agreement. All of these matters are being handled by a billionaire real-estate developer, Steve Witkoff, who has no experience or knowledge in dealing with any of these issues. But Witkoff is worth $2 billion, and presumably Trump felt that clinching real estate deals is good training for crafting complicated international agreements.

Witkoff has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin four times in the past several months, but the Russian bombardment against Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, has only increased in that period. We know very little about Witkoff’s experiences in these meetings, but we do know that Trump falsely believes that Putin has made key “concessions.” The first concession, according to Trump, is that Putin will be “stopping the war.” The second is even more risible: Putin has agreed “not to take the whole country.” Even before the Putin-Witkoff talks, Trump endorsed Putin’s key demands: “Crimea will stay with Russia,” and Ukraine “will never be able to join NATO.”

You will noticed that Rubio and his master Donny have little to say about the conflict in Sudan or the total ethnic cleansing of Gaza….these should be high on the list of things to spotlight but instead Rubio is bust illustrating just how incompetent he is and nods approval for everything ignorant from Donny’s mouth.

Rubio is suppose to be America’s top diplomat and instead he allows Vance and Donny to speak for him.

When he took office he stated that it was to promote national interests….that is not his job.  He said that “to advance our national interest, we will build a more innovative, nimble, and focused State Department. This will require replacing some priorities, deemphasizing some issues, and eliminating some practices.”

Rubio has also called for a return to traditional diplomacy, deemphasizing what he views as divisive political and cultural causes. He has pledged to combat censorship and protect free speech, while also reprioritizing truth. On the environmental front, Rubio has promised to support sensible environmental protections while using diplomacy to advance American energy dominance.

He has done none of that lame ass promises….

Diplomacy is an instrument of power. It is essential for maintaining effective international relationships, and a principal means by which the United States defends its interests, responds to crises, and achieves its foreign policy goals.

Read more of the mission of the state department….https://2009-2017.state.gov/s/d/rm/rls/perfrpt/2002/html/18942.htm

For over a century the yes of the world have been on the US and now under the leadership of Rubio and his clueless master the US is going from global domination to global irrelevancy….

As the titular leader of this group of MAGA misfits, Trump projects a “transactional” approach to international diplomacy, which he wants to use to replace the American strategy for building global peace that the US adopted after World War II and that has succeeded remarkably since then in avoiding major conflict in a nuclear armed world.

Trump’s theory holds that the United States should forget about the rest of the world, and that we should avoid engaging in any action unless a maximum payment in cold cash can be exacted in exchange. Trump sees America’s traditional efforts to secure and guarantee world peace and eliminate global poverty as nothing less than an invitation to be taken for a sucker.

Previous administrations, Trump believes, were weak fools enabling the rest of the world to take advantage of American generosity. It makes no difference to Trump that the US profited enormously by its investments in Europe, or that helping emerging Third World nations opened access for American products to global markets and increased American influence in practically every corner of the planet. Sure, the US gained unprecedented stature as the world’s most powerful economy, but Trump thinks we should have asked for more.

While turning the US from a promoter of human rights and abandoning America’s role as a committed supporter of global free-market capitalism, Trump wants to go back to a world in which “might makes right,” and in which the powerful do as they want, while the less fortunate are left to do as they must.

Trump’s Chaos Moving America From Global Dominance Toward Global Irrelevance

In conclusion American diplomacy is dying a slow death and the “America First” agenda that Rubio so hardily embraced just may be that proverbial final nail in the coffin.
