America’s Second Civil War

For around 25 years the US has been in the middle of a second civil war….this time there is no death and destruction but rather fought with ideas and political theater…..

I recently read a great piece in that conservative icon, the National Review…….

It is time that our society acknowledge a sad truth: America is currently fighting its Second Civil War.

In fact, with the obvious and enormous exception of attitudes toward slavery, Americans are more divided morally, ideologically, and politically today than they were during the Civil War. For that reason, just as the Great War came to be known as the First World War once there was a Second World War, the Civil War will become known as the First Civil War when more Americans come to regard the current battle as the Second Civil War.

I do not agree with some of their suppositions the fat is that ………The very soul of the nation is at stake.

  1. This one took some thought, as I believe it to be entirely serious. After reading the linked material, which began well, but, ended in platitude, I could only think of what Einstein, among others, noted, in essence, if we continue to think in the same way, we can’t expect anything to change.

This person may be right, in his way, but, he’s the one who is applying the labels to each “set of ideals”. If there is a “war” going on, it is world-wide, as reason struggles against ignorance. If all our possible options include some kind of war, then we haven’t changed much at all, and really can’t expect much else than conflict.

There are other ways, but, not enough people are willing to use reason to see it. In fact, my own guess is six or more billion of those alive now either cannot, or will not, accept reality enough to make that observation, much less act on it to the extent of seeking other paths.

    1. This civil war has been going for a couple of decades….us against them….right left…..another term to consider is “transpartisan”…..a great book it you need one “Democracy For Realists”…gotta pop out for now….chuq

  2. I felt that the article was just taking a side, under the guise of examining a situation.
I keep hearing all this stuff about the ‘American Left’. It is so annoying, because there is no real ‘Left’ in America. All that exists are some different versions of the same Right-Wing philosophy, highlighted by some overwhelming political correctness that has taken a reasonable idea too far.
    Best wishes, Pete.
