Over a year ago the world was shocked by a group known as Boko Haram when it kidnapped over 250 school girls on a raid on their school. Social media was frantic blogs were written and the news was dire on the fate of these girls.

Today, when was the last time you heard #BeingOurGirlsBack? My guess is about a year or so….funny how something that meant so much to the world can be crapped on by events elsewhere.
Let me help…..several countries including the Us has sent resources to Nigeria to aid the government in their on-going battle with Boko Haram….no one is saying for sure what those “resources” are….but we helped…and that is what is important, right?
Anyway….there have been stories that the leader of BH has been killed by the Nigerian army and some girls have been rescued….but what about the rest of the girls and what about the terrorist group today?

Boko Haram is losing ground, resources and fighters. But defeating the group and preventing a future insurgency needs more than military success. The 14 May summit in Abuja is an opportunity for Nigeria and its Lake Chad basin neighbours to prepare and implement what’s been long overdue: a holistic response to the extremist group.

Last time I heard #whateverthefuck was about 0.05 seconds before I changed the channel. Mind you, anything with a “hashtag” gets the same treatment. It’s the equivalent of being “world famous for 15 minutes”. And in that 15 minutes, everybody gets to pretend that they’re doing something really important to change the world for the better. This kind of stuff is the most goddamn, laziest, self-congratulatory, empty moral posturing ever.
That said, the girl-napping was certainly a truly horrible thing, done by a truly awful bunch of douches. But that only makes the story worse, not better. This story became a huge thing only because it fit the narrative of evil ISIS-friendly terrorists rampaging all over the world. “They’re on the verge of subjugating us all and turning our girls into sex slaves.”
However, this is just another day at the global office. The sex-trafficking of teenage girls is so commonplace, it’s hardly even gets reported. I strongly suspect that far more girls were taken/conned and forced into prostitution today than the number of girls taken by Procol Harum.
This is why I try to keep the reader up to date on this situation…no one should ever forget this stuff.
Considering how little media attention has been paid to Africa over the last 25 years (OJ got more media than all of Africa in the 90’s), I actually think it’s really disingenuous for the media to suddenly pay attention just because some girls got snatched up by some friends of our lacklustre new “global threat”. And all the hashtag-poseur-activism just made it even more disingenuous and even more fleeting.
Good to hear an update, especially a mildly positive one. Because if there’s one thing you can be certain of today, it’s that the folks in The Twit Zone have ZERO attention span. And the rest ain’t far behind. Most people forget stuff before we’ve even finished hearing about it for the first time.
I agree and I try to cover Africa as often as I c……/but I will admit the the ME is the region that I spend more time researching.
