In defense of America First

Here it is…..that moment that all dread….the Professor and his damn historical perspectives……

The 2016 election has brought about a renewed interest in a movement from the 1930’s…..the America First movement…

Mr. Trump has as a slogan “Making America Great Again” and that has a renewed interest in the slogan “America First”…..but with all the hoopla with the election what is truly meant by “America First”?

Sadly, I do not think that Trump’s ideas have anything to do with international entanglements……

America First was a young, politically diverse, and surprisingly well-lettered movement that wanted to keep America neutral (like Switzerland or Ireland) as Europe descended into World War II. Though it started on the East Coast, it was concentrated in the Midwest and had over two million members nationwide. It counted major American political figures, Democrat and Republican, in its ranks, as well as many men of letters.

  1. Who on earth wants to be first anyway?
    It is all a load of baloney…America Great… Britain Great…Who cares?
    People are full of prejudices…best to own up to them and move on…I have mine and watch them.
    I am not into being proud of my country….must have passed me by,all that patriotic hoopla..
    What do the French say….
    ‘plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’
    The more things change, the more they stay the same.
    In other words….same old….

      1. Yes,completely agree….but unfortunately ‘we’ have lost all common sense…how is it going to be changed…???

        Not in my lifetime…or yours ….ideals are all very well and worth fighting for but the reality is different..unfortunately.

  3. I do believe it would help if we spent some of the $$$ we spend on war & aide with/to others on the US itself but I’ve never believed in true neutrality. I am also going the check out P’s link. dru

      1. I go everyday to a website that donates a small amount of money every day to many different causes. I always click the button for animal rescue and veterans and then depending on how I feel, I click for other cause too. It is not much but all I can “afford”. dru
