The “Greatest” Generation

It is early on a Saturday morning and the Prof has got two days of mental clarity……..I admit it….I watch the Military Channel or as I like to call it….the Hitler Channel……I like to look back at the history of war and WW2 was our greatest war…..speaking of great…..I think back to the generation that had too participate in that war…..some have called it America’s greatest generation…….

I recently read a piece that begs to differ with that assumption…….

A columnist in the Los Angeles Times today makes the bold assertion that millennials are poised to be our “greatest generation.” And no, Chris Erskine is not a millennial himself. But he’s taught them, coached them, and worked beside them, and he can’t say enough good things. “They are inherently more adaptive, they are idealistic, they are tolerant of differences,” he writes. “They are aspirational in all the right ways.”

Erskine deflects the standard knocks: Too coddled as kids? Encouraging treatment “produced a generation of eager and motivated children, not the worst qualities in an achievement-based world.” Too needy as adults? Eh, they’ll grow out of it. As boomers retire, the professional world will open up far more opportunities for this tech-savvy and ambitious group, and they’re going to thrive. So, sorry, Tom Brokaw, but these newcomers “show all the signs of becoming the greatest generation in human history.” Click for Erskine’s full column.

What a crock of sh*t!

Since I am a “Boomer” I would like to believe that mine was a greater generation…..but let’s be honest……can anyone see the “millennials” sacrificing for the good of the country?  Or suffering to help the military succeed?  I mean a generation that is built on ego-centric, self-indulgence and materialistic BS…can anyone see this as something good?

At least my generation fought for civil rights, voting rights and change…what is this generation fighting for?  A generation that has to be the center of attention every moment of every day….that cannot function without Facebook or Twitter…just what about them would make then the “Greatest” generation?

Am I wrong?

  1. No. You are not wrong. I don’t want to get started on what the “millennials” are fighting for, but you can bet your a$$ it isn’t for a better life for their children. And God forbid, grandchildren are not even in the realm of reality for them.

    1. Steve, it worries me somewhat….it is almost like a return to the Dark Ages….just a thought….have great weekend….
