The fertility clinic operator who grabbed headlines with his promise to help parents create “designer babies” has backed away from the plan—for the moment.

Dr. Jeff Steinberg, director of The Fertility Institutes, earlier this year had offered parents the opportunity to select their future offspring’s hair, eye and skin color by genetically testing embryos.

After an outcry, he changed his mind. “Though well intended, we remain sensitive to public perception and feel that any benefit the diagnostic studies may offer are far outweighed by the apparent negative societal impacts involved,” according to a statement posted on the clinic’s Web site this week.

Fertility experts were quick to note that science didn’t support Steinberg’s marketing pitch. Although embryos created through assisted reproduction can be tested for some genetic defects, the science of selecting cosmetic traits based on DNA data is not even close to being well established.

“The truth is that we cannot (yet) reliably test embryos for eye color, hair color, skin tones and other ‘cosmetic’ features,” warned a statement from the Center for Human Reproduction, a fertility clinic. “It will still take years before all of this will become technically even feasible.”

Distaste for the service that Steinberg promoted was widespread. Writing on her blog The Fertility Advocate, Pamela Madsen, founder of the American Fertility Association, said:
“Some things do need to have some sacred space around it. And the creation of life and the end of life is one of those things that deserves sacred space.”

Is it just me or does this sound a lot like eugenics?

Why Do They Keep Injecting Race?

The media that is.

As the Obama team rolls out their picks for the various position the media reports on it by stated that “She will be the first African-American to hold the position”  Or that he will be the first African-American in the AG’s office.  Or…well you get the idea……

This past election has proven that most Americans have moved past the race thing, but somehow the media has to keep injecting it into the conversation.  Why?

I realize that the media thinks at most of us mortals are ignorant dolts,  but I do not think that most of us need their unsolicited help.  We are a visually aided society and I think that most Americans can determine what a persons ethnic origins are.  Well, I guess there are some that will need assistence in this area, but most of us can do it all by ourselves.

May I suggest that it is time to let that crap go.  Time to move on and report the news and stop the commentaries.

Will Whites Become A Minority?

If so, what will the supremists do then?

White people are projected to no longer be in the majority in the United States by the year 2042 – eight years sooner than previous projections.

The US Census Bureau’s latest figures – based on birth, death and immigration rates – suggest that minorities will soon make up 55% of the population.

Hispanics who now make up about 15% will, it says, account for 30% by 2050.

It is projected that black people will make up 15%, a small increase, while Asians will grow from 4% to 9%.

White non-Hispanics currently make up about two-thirds of the population, but only 55% of those are aged under five.

It is likely that the demographic changes will be experienced right across the country – and no longer confined to urban areas as in the past.

Overall, the US population is expected to rise from 305 million people to 439 million by the year 2050.

The white population will also be ageing. The number of people over 85 years old will triple in the next 40 years.

“The white population is older and very much centred around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years,” William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution think tank, told the Associated Press.

“The future of America is epitomised by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future.”

The Census Bureau points out that its projections are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters.

This type of news should have some running scared.
