How Long Did It Take?

The news is that Colorado has legalized weed……now so many images come to mind…..all lot of hippies sitting around drinking wine and playing the guitar……but someone has asked just how safe is it?  Did anyone every see the 30’s movie, Reefer Madness”?  According to that movie weed smokers are all sex fiends, murders and all around wackos…….a very amusing movie if you need a good Friday night date night movie to snuggle up to……but all kidding aside…..how safe is it?

Colorado legalized sale of recreational marijuana to over-21s in January.

I was wondering how long it would take one of these stories to pop up………

For the first time since Colorado legalized weed for recreational use, a coroner has listed “marijuana intoxication” as a contributor to a death. Wyoming student Levy Thamba was in Denver on spring break with three friends when he jumped to his death from a Holiday Inn balcony after eating a marijuana cookie, reports the Denver Post. His friends told investigators he “exhibited hostile behavior” after eating the cookie, and though initial attempts to calm him down seemed to work, he ended up leaping from the balcony, USA Today reports.

“He was fine, he was normal, he was an easygoing kid, and then he ate this cookie and went over the balcony, and this was not a kid who was suicidal,” a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office says. At 19, the exchange student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo was too young to legally buy or possess marijuana in Colorado, but one of his friends was over 21 and bought the cookie legally. No alcohol or other drugs were found in his system, and the death was ruled an accident.

You know if you change the weed for acid….this story could have been a headline in 1967………surprising, at least to me, the anti-weed people have not jumped on this story to illustrate the diabolical weed…….unsafe at any speed……(well that is for another post on another drug of choice)……..I guess the Nevada rancher BS is enough for them right now…….this should make a comeback when all the other political dog whistles have played out…..

It Is Always….Location–Location–Location!

There are always visionaries especially when it comes to retailing….think about the “Pet Rock” from the 70’s or the run up to the iPod or iPhone…..all were very effective in selling a product.  But I recently read about an absolute genius in retailing…….

A business-savvy Girl Scout in San Francisco had to call for back-up cookies just 45 minutes after setting up shop in an inspired location: outside a medical marijuana clinic. In two hours on Monday, 13-year-old Danielle Lei sold 117 boxes of cookies to customers who may have been expecting to have the munchies. Her mother, who accompanied her and asked the Green Cross clinic for permission, says that’s dozens more boxes than she managed to sell outside a Safeway in an identical time period the next day. “It’s no secret that cannabis is a powerful appetite stimulant, so we knew this would be a very beneficial endeavor for the girls,” a Green Cross worker tells Mashable. “It’s all about location, and what better place to sell Girl Scout cookies than outside a medical cannabis collective?” Indeed; Danielle will reportedly be back with more cookies tomorrow. A Girl Scouts of Northern California spokeswoman says the organization has no problem with sales outside any legitimate business. In Colorado, however, where pot has been fully legalized, Girl Scouts are banned from selling cookies outside marijuana outlets or liquor stores, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

A 117 boxes in 45 minutes!………I thought I was a genius back in the day when I sold tuna sandwiches to “Dead Heads” for $5 a pop….but this young lady has my admiration……any thoughts on this young lady?

Damn! The Munchies!

Another Saturday and yet another two days of trying to wash my brain of the filth of our political process……..there was a time that I would numb my mind with the magical herb….but those days are gone since my injury and the pain meds that I must take……any way we have heard a bunch of stuff in the news about all the legalization efforts in the US…….personally, why not!

But there is a development in the Middle East that has reported in the Newser website………

(Newser) – Mary Jane without the high? You can thank Israeli scientists, who have created a new form of marijuana that gives you health benefits without getting you stoned, AFP reports. “It has the same scent, shape and taste as the original plant—it’s all the same—but the numbing sensation that users are accustomed to has disappeared,” says Tzahi Klein, who heads development at the firm that created the new cannabis.

The concept behind Israel’s new pot is simple: neutralize the effect of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol—which gets you high—and increase the power of CBD, or cannabidiol, which can relieve psychiatric problems and help diabetics. You won’t get the munchies, either. But will medical users like the new, no-high grass? Klein recalls that “many of our patients who tried the new plant come back to us and say: ‘You tricked me,'” thinking it was a placebo.

Now I ask…..what is the point?  No high….No munchies…..No desire to get laid….what is the point?  They are trying to take all the fun out of smoking the magical herb!

Weed Puts Limber In Your Joint!

This one is for all those stoners from high school…you know those guys that hit the pipe and would sit in the corner contemplating the meaning of string….

Yes, there has been yet another study on sex and weed:

Men who smoked pot daily were found to be four times more likely to have trouble reaching orgasm than men who did not inhale, according to the La Trobe University study.

Other daily male cannabis smokers experienced premature ejaculation at nearly three times the rate of non-smokers.

Professor Anthony Smith says while the habit often had a significant impact on a man’s sex life, the effects were not always something the smokers would consider a “sexual health problem”.

“The findings suggest that men are self-medicating with cannabis to delay orgasm,” said Prof Smith from the Melbourne-based university’s Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society.

“While many male smokers experienced sexual problems, they also reported more partners than non-smokers.

The study took in more than 8600 people, aged 16 to 64, who were surveyed by telephone as part of the Australian Longitudinal Study of Health and Relationships.

Participants were asked whether they had used cannabis in the previous year and, if yes, their frequency.

Overall, 8.7 per cent said they had used cannabis in the last year, with twice as many men (11.2 per cent) in the positive compared to women (6.1 per cent).

People under 36 were more likely to smoke marijuana than older participants.

The research also found women who smoked cannabis daily were more likely to have had two or more sexual partners in the previous year.

They were also seven times more likely to have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection in the last year than non-smokers.

Now if that does not put the limber in your joint (pun intended), then nothing will….

Oh Damn! More Bad News!

Marijuana use could increase the risk of testicular cancer, according to a study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center out this week. If a man has smoked marijuana on a weekly basis or has been exposed to hashish for an extended period of time, the chances of testicular cancer double compared to someone who has never smoked marijuana

The study found that marijuana could also decrease sperm quality, decrease testosterone levels and cause impotency, since these are similar side effects of testicular cancer.

Men already produce a “cannabinoid-like chemical,” which protects the reproductive system from cancer, but marijuana use could reverse that protective chemical and instead work against the body. The marijuana link is somehow associated with “nonseminoma,” malignant germ cell tumors, and is increasing the risk.

The study has prompted more research as it has open up a bevy of questions, said Stephen Schwartz, a member of the Public Health Sciences Division at the Hutchinson Center.

“What young men should know is that first, we know very little about the long-term health consequences of marijuana smoking, especially heavy marijuana smoking,” Schwartz said in a press release. “So, in the absence of more certain information, a decision to smoke marijuana recreationally means that one is taking a chance on one’s future health.”

The National Cancer Institute estimates almost 8,100 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer, and 380 will die because of it in 2008.
