Who’s Afraid Of Intellectualism?

Good question and the best answer is Conservatives since about the 1960s….and ever since they have worked tirelessly to eradicate it….

As a kid, my favorite part of grocery shopping wasn’t the snacks or the cereal aisle, it was the tabloids at the checkout. I’d devour headlines about Batboy sightings, Bigfoot vacations, royal scandals, and the occasional presidential summit with extraterrestrials. These were absurdities printed with a straight face, and the comedy was half the fun.

I didn’t expect that, decades later, those supermarket fever dreams would feel less like parody and more like prophecy. The fantasies that once lived on cheap newsprint now pulse through mainstream culture. In the social media age, anything can be “true” if it flatters your bias or fuels your outrage. And with AI dissolving the already thin boundary between fact and fiction, we’ve entered an era where reality feels optional, truth feels negotiable, and the most sensational lie travels at the speed of an algorithm.

In this environment, “common sense,” emotion, and personal anecdote have muscled into spaces once reserved for evidence and expertise. But there’s nothing “common sense” about medicine, climate science, gender identity, or any other complex system that shapes human life. Yet this appeal to “what feels right” has become the jet fuel of America’s culture war. It declares: If the issue seems simple to me, it should be simple to you. And if you disagree, you’re elitist or part of a hidden agenda. This flattening of complexity has turned ignorance into authenticity and expertise into betrayal.

This is anti-intellectualism, and though accelerating, it isn’t new. Richard Hofstadter warned in the 1960s of a growing American suspicion of expertise, a belief that intelligence itself was untrustworthy. What was once a cultural tendency has hardened into a political identity and, increasingly, a governing philosophy.

It’s also tied to a literacy crisis hiding in plain sight. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 21% of U.S. adults struggle with “Level 1” literacy, basic decoding with limited comprehension, and 34% of adults perform at “Below Level 2,” meaning they cannot reliably compare or integrate information across texts. The more recent NCES update shows low literacy rates increasing, with “Below Level 2” rising from 29% to 34% as of 2024.

America’s Peril: The Rot of Anti-Intellectualism and Demagoguery is Costing Us Our Future

So why are so many Americans afraid of intellectuals?

They prefer to grasp a hold of some hair-brain idea than see if the idea holds water….is it laziness or just plain stupidity?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Arab intellectuals must act now!

I have written many posts on the Palestinian cause and the conflict that is ensuing between them and the Israelis….I have given an alternative to the “wall of separation” that Israel has constructed…..I have written about the institutionalization of conflict and how destructive it can be….

My concern for this situation stems from my friend Rafiq who worked with me as an interpreter when I was working in the Middle East….he was Palestinian and I got to see the situation in his homeland first hand….it is nothing like the western media would have us believe….it is far worse especially if you are Palestinian…..

I read this op-ed by a Palestinian analyst and thought that it was a good write and made a lot of sense……I offer it here for others to read his thoughts……

Regrettably too many Americans cannot believe that there are actual Arab intellectuals….most want to believe that Arabs are backwards and prone to violence…..we can thank the media for giving us that limited vision……but there are many intellectuals in the Arab world and they have some great insights…..like Palestinian author and political analyst Nassar Ibrahim appeals to Arab intellectuals: act now to protect our heritage!

I spend a lot of time reading news about the Middle East as well as on-line with friends in the region so I get news that most Americans do not get…..that is a good thing for I can report stuff that is not readily available to most Americans…..but it has a down side…..some refuse to read about what is being said in the Middle east for they know best because they listen to FOX News or read InfoWars which is so skewed that it is all so laughable…..there are some good opinions by people of the region and their thoughts should be taken into consideration……that is if they want to know or not…..

This op-ed was from a friend in Iraq….he sent it to me with the hope that it would help Americans to understand what is being said…..

Whatever happened to critical intellectuals? – Al Jazeera English

That is a damn good question.  Critical thinking is a thing of the past….today it is all along “party lines”….little “outside the box” thinking left.  We have proven that the thinking of today’s political climate progress is just not possible.

In my studies at university I was taught about the classical definitions of conservatism and liberalism…….there is nothing like them in American politics of today……basically we are confronted with the same coin only different sides of neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism combined with the disappearance of critical intellectuals spell a bleak future for Western democracy.

Our society needs more critical thinking…….if it is to survive the crush of stupid that prevails in these days of…..whine and poses!

Smart People Just Know!

Sunday and I smile at the day….coffee will do that for you……tomorrow I return to the silliness we call politics…..if only it were real politics it would make it a bit more bearable…..but alas…..NO such luck….

Recently a loyal reader, Hansi of Hansi’s Hallucinations made a good point…..anyway I thought this would put a smile on his face……

In an article written by Adam Clark Estes……

With over 40 years of research to support their findings, a team of British scientists was slightly surprised to learn that people with higher IQs are much more prone to drug use. “It’s counterintuitive,” says lead author James White. “It’s not what we thought we would find.” And it’s not for lack of trying either.

The Cardiff University team consulted data from 8,000 people in the 1970 British Cohort Study, a group of human lab rats born in the same week in April 1970 and surveyed approximately once every five years about a broad host of topics. The results found that subjects that tested above average on IQ tests at age 5 were twice as likely to have done hard drugs within the past year, when asked at age 30. The smart kids weren’t just smoking pot, either; the numbers suggest that they prefer cocaine and ecstasy. White doesn’t know exactly what caused the difference but he has a good guess. “The likely mechanism is openness to experience,” he writes, “and, I think, it’s also this idea of having an educated view of risk as well.”

This is hardly the first time scientists have connected high IQ with drug use. Last year, evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa tracked a trend similar to that in the Cardiff study and also found that people with higher IQs were more likely to use drugs. He even took it a step further and offered a hypothesis of why. Kanazawa says that smarter people are attracted to “evolutionary novelties” like chemically processed drugs:

People — scientists and civilians alike — often associate intelligence with positive life outcomes. The fact that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume alcohol, tobacco, and psychoactive drugs tampers this universally positive view of intelligence and intelligent individuals. Intelligent people don’t always do the right thing, only the evolutionarily novel thing.

Kanazawa’s theory would also support the latest findings. Because they require some basic, cocaine and ecstasy are evolutionarily novel in a way that marijuana is not. The good news for you smart people, however, is that even if you’re more likely to try drugs, you’re also more likely to kick the addiction faster.

Could explain so much!

A “Republic Of Letters”

College of Political Knowledge

Subject:  Political Philosophy/Activism/

The original title of this post was to be “Academics vs Activist”…….there is a wide divide in the political field between academics (intellectuals) and activists….and this is my attempt to rectify that divide (wish me luck)…….

Years ago when I was much younger I was asked to participate in a scholars conference on the campus of the Univ. of Louisville….I was asked because I had lectured on the shortcomings in the theory of non-violent action….I was not a big hit because most of the academics that were there were big admirers of Gandhi, King, et al….and thought that they had changed the world…my point was that these people set stuff into motion but it was the people that actually made their goals happen…I take nothing away from those that I criticized…… very brave and influential people…..anyway I was asked simply because even though I was educated I worked at blue collar jobs and the panel wanted a different perspective and I was introduced as a “blue collar intellectual”…at first I was uneasy with that title but as the conference moved along I became rather fond of it……I really got a hateful reception when I accused my fellow panel members of neglect…..I said that NO change will come from the bottom up because the academics and intellectuals talk to each other and not the people….they spend their time writing and talking with colleagues, using terminology that the average person has No idea what they are talking about….and because of that disconnect the average person basically ignores them as much as possible…..and that most people do not walking around with a Thesaurus in their pockets……..as you can see….I was not that popular of a speaker (but I got over it)……and after years and years of research and activism….not much has changed….the people still do not understand much of what the so-called intellectuals have to say…..Intellectuals and academics seem to lack passion, they have plenty to say in their writings, but they lack the fire of passion for what they say or write….and there is the major disconnect they have with the people they try to influence……

This can be changed if we go to a tool used in the past to communicate ideas and techniques…..it was called “Republic Of Letters”…..I know….huh?

The “Republic of Letters” (Respublica Literarum), a term apparently coined by the humanist Francesco Barbaro in 1417, was first intended to designate the community of early modern scholars who restored the ancient “Orators, Poets, Historians, Astronomers, and Grammarians” who would otherwise have been lost forever; but the term later encompassed other writers in the emergent public sphere of early modern Europe. Also connected to the term was the international network of the European university, which was a basically ecclesiastical foundation, but which, through the faculties of arts and law, contributed also to a large secular intelligentsia.

Since academics have NO idea how to talk to activists…..and activist think the intellectuals are overpaid wind bags…..how does the theory get down to the public?  The average person is the only way a theory comes to reality and if academics cannot accurately convey the idea….how will it become reality?
This is where the “Republic of Letters” comes into play, with some minor adjustments……..academics and activists come together through correspondence to talk about theories and ways to make them work……actually we have that….the problem is that it is used to rate records or gossip or other mundane issues…….in today’s world it is called…..”blogging”…….
Political bloggers are doing their part to make political theory work…..whether I agree with their premise or not……it is a free exchange of ideas and issues……and that free exchange can bridge the gap between academia and activism…..but to make it work all need to agree that all logical avenues are acceptable and need to be talked about, worked on and finally implemented……
I have always supported the exchanges between the intellectuals and the activists…..sadly to say….not all my fellow politics feel the same way…….and that divide will prevent any and all rational discourse to succeed….we need to work together in a new “Republic of Letters”.

21st Century’s Most Influential People

There was a time when intellectual thought influenced people to do certain things and accomplish great things……those days are GONE!  The days of Aristotle, St.  Augustine, Locke, Hume, Burke,  Paine, Madison and yes even Marx…these people were thinkers and their thoughts prompted people to act…they were said to be influential…..these thinkers gave us ideas…ideas on society, governance and philosophy…they gave ideas which could improve our lives…..they gave us ideas that people would die for……they gave us ideas that statesmen would debate……

They were influential!  But what about the 21st century…..who are those people that we think of as influential?  Is it a big thinker?  A great teacher?  Is it Hawkin?  Or maybe some outta the limelight dude or dudette?

NO!  It has nothing to do with ideas, but rather everything to do with MONEY!  People like Jobs, Gates, Buffet (Warren not Jimmy), Trump and on and on…..people who will make you do what they want you to do….that is right…I said MAKE….as in FORCE….you to do their bidding……these are the influential people….apparently we have moved beyond thinking and the world of ideas…..and onto the amount of cash you have….

So, for the first decade of the 21st century……money has replaced ideas…..what will the rest of the century give us?  So the centuries of ideas that gave man direction has been replaced by superficiality……….if you believe in evolution then mankind is evolving into self-centered little worms…..I am so proud!
