The ‘Traditional Values’ Con

How many times have you heard some pompous politician use the term ‘traditional values’?  The term is a dog whistle for the ignorant.

“Traditional values” is code for valuing whites above non-whites, men above women and children, and Christians above non-Christians. It goes still further, assuming that some people are inherently “better” or most deserving of privilege and the right even to dominate. It actually asserts that this way of being is mandated by God.

It appears that most people who adhere to “traditional values” also support an authoritarian style of governance, both in the family and in politics, business, and other spheres of life. People who have this worldview are considerably more likely to support Republican candidates than Democratic ones. It’s interesting to note that white male Christians are not the only people who support these “traditional” values.

Does any of that sound familiar?

It is an policy to obfuscate ‘values’ to equate them with what politicians want this country’s people to believe….they usually have nothing to do with ‘making this country great’.

‘Traditional values’ is for those weak-minded and the ignorant…..it is easier than fleshing out policies and explaining them…..much easier to find a term and stick with it…..even if it is nonsensical.

It is a snake oil that the GOP pushes the more they talk the less coherent they become.

Let’s be honest with ourselves….the whole scam of ‘traditional values’ is nothing more than bigotry.

“Traditional values” is code for valuing whites above non-whites, men above women and children, and Christians above non-Christians. It goes still further, assuming that some people are inherently “better” or most deserving of privilege and the right even to dominate. It actually asserts that this way of being is mandated by God.

It’s interesting to note that white male Christians are not the only people who support these “traditional” values.

Supporting “traditional values” means, by definition, upholding the status quo. It means attaching a higher value to “leaving things as they are and have been for a long time” than “trying something new” even when “the way things are” is bad. It means also believing that we can’t do better than what we’ve done before, even if that is more an unintended side effect than an explicit intention.

The whole ‘traditional values’ con fits perfectly with the issues and policies of Donny and his band of mental midgets.

It is time for Americans to start looking at the ‘human value’ of policies and issues and leave this cursed bullshit of ‘traditional values’ in a toilet where it belongs.

Closing Thought–04Sep19

We all, well most all, grew up with the values that our parents instilled into us…..for me it was patriotism and country more than anything else…..I was taught that this is a country for all and that I should work to that end…..and I have watched those values slowly erode away…..to an ugly shadow of its former self.

Erode to the point that my values are no longer the focus of the country…..

The values Americans consider “very important” are undergoing fundamental shifts, according to a new poll by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. However, one thing hasn’t changed from a similar survey 21 years ago: “Hard work” was at the top then (83%), and it remains at the top now (89%), per Axios. But beyond that, attitudes are shifting:

  • Patriotism: The percentage who consider it very important dropped from 70% in 1998 to 61%.
  • Religion: This dropped from 62% to 48%.
  • Having kids: Down from 59% to 43%.
  • Money: Up from 31% to 41%.
  • Community involvement: Up from 47% to 62%.
  • Age divide: Age of respondents is a big factor. For example, 79% of those older than 55 say patriotism is very important. For those 18 to 38, the figure drops to 42%, per the Hill. A similar age divide occurred in the ranking of the importance of religion.
  • A takeaway: “There’s an emerging America where issues like children, religion and patriotism are far less important,” Republican pollster Bill McInturff tells the Journal. “And in America, it’s the emerging generation that calls the shots about where the country is headed.”

Fascinating how times and ideals change.

Also fascinating that the political parties are not addressing the values of the voters anymore……only what gets them votes no matter how outlandish they are.

The values of the donors are more important than those of the average voter.

Maybe you should take that under advisement when you decide where to place your vote.

What The Hell Does Pro-Family Mean?

What made me think about this subject was a good old boy that is running locally for a state representative spot…….he states that he is pro-2nd amendment (something I would expect a tobacco spitting moron to say) and that he is pro-education (a humorous pile of fecal matter) and finally that he is pro-family…….pro-family?  what does that mean?

I hear this term batted around almost endlessly  mostly by conserv candidates…..and I ask again…what are the values that mean you are pro-family?

A poll taken by Harris in 1998 revealed a bit…….

  • 52% of women and 42% of men thought family values means “loving, taking care of, and supporting each other”
  • 38% of women and 35% of men thought family values means “knowing right from wrong and having good values”
  • 2% of women and 1% men thought of family values in terms of the “traditional family”

The survey also noted that 93% of all women thought that society should value all types of families (Harris did not publish the responses for men)

Apparently it has something to do with the old bumper sticker of “Family Values”….but then….just what does that mean….in conserv context it means the following……

  • Promotion of traditional marriage and opposition to sex outside of marriage
  • Support for a traditional role for women in the family.
  • Opposition to same-sex marriage
  • Opposition to legalized induced abortion
  • Support for abstinence education
Support for policies that are said to protect children from obscenity and exploitation

In other words draconian beliefs…..beliefs from the 16th century…….very little of those have anything to do with raising a family….just red meat for morons!

It is subjective, open to interpretation….but the above definitions have nothing to do with the steering of the ship of state…they are solely emotional ramblings.

But what are family values really?

To me these values are……respect, honesty, belonging, forgiveness, and most important, communication…….these are the values that make a strong family…..the other stiff is just dog whistles for morons!

I have found in the past that candidates that use such terms as pro-2nd amendment, pro-education and especially pro-family have NO solutions for real problems so throw these dog whistles around to sound informed…….they are worthless and deserve NO support….not even for dog catcher.

The Family That Lies Together…….

Okay we hear all the time about some guy that is doing his daughter after school before Mom gets home from work….or some Mom that is boiking her son and his friends while Dad sells shoes….and according to our beliefs, both moral and religious, it is a crime and should be punished harshly….right?

I recently got a tweet from Newser…..

The Swiss parliament has drafted a law that would allow parents to have sex with their children or siblings to have sex with each other, provided everybody involved is a consenting adult. “First-degree” incest is already legal in countries including France and Russia, but the Swiss measure hasn’t won widespread support, with conservative lawmakers labeling it “completely repugnant,” and polls showing a clear majority of the public in opposition.
A lawyer for David Epstein, the Columbia University professor accused of having an incestuous relationship with his adult daughter, says that while people are right to be morally opposed to incest, the Swiss bill to tolerate “what goes on privately in bedrooms” has merit. “It’s OK for homosexuals to do whatever they want in their own home,” he tells ABC News. “How is this so different? We have to figure out why some behavior is tolerated and some is not.”

I would like to hear from those that have a valid opinion on this matter…….Should a family be allowed to lay together?

It’s A Family Thing

The mid-term campaigns are in full bloom…idiocy…silliness…..are the rule of the day.  Voters are inundated with what Spaniards called “Mierda”…..from all directions….phone calls….door greets….Mall appearances…the fools are everywhere….and all want your vote  so they can go to Washington and get their piece of the pie…..whoever named it the “silly season” was a very wise person….

All the pomp and ceremony of the elections has become boring…even for a politics junkie like me…..there is only so much BS that one can stand…especially if you have an IQ above “tickle me Elmo”……but just when I thought I was about over the stuff……I was mistaken!

Bloomberg has a report that just tickles the crap out of me….Thanx to Traci McMillan for the article……

President Barack Obama is distantly related to two of his most outspoken critics — Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin and talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh — as well as to former President George W. Bush, according to a genealogy website.

Family trees revealed Obama and Palin, the former Alaska Governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, are 10th cousins through common ancestor John Smith, according to Ancestry.com Inc. Smith was Obama’s and Palin’s 12th-great- grandfather. Smith, a Protestant pastor, was an early settler in Massachusetts and was criticized by the ecclesiastical community for supporting Quakers, said Anastasia Tyler, a genealogist for the website.

Obama and Limbaugh are 10th cousins once removed through shared connections to Richmond Terrell, a Virginia settler who came to America in the mid-1600s, Tyler said.

The family-tree website also found that Palin is related to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, and author and commentator Ann Coulter. The three are tied to John Lathrop, an Englishman who was banished to Boston after he served as minister of an illegal church independent of the Church of England, Tyler said.

Just I have thought for decades….and now there is PROOF……Politics is ALL one big, power hungry family……

The Class of ’94

I remember the day, as if it was yesterday, wait it was yesterday or a couple of days ago, or…….anyway, another sex scandal, another Repub and another Class of ’94 alumnus…..

The Class of ’94…..the GOP was swept into office in the Congress by a tidal wave of ultra-conservatism on the backs of “family values” strong words during the presidency of Clinton and his many sexual accusations……Newt and the boyz went about changing the game in Washington…to the point of shutting the government down for awhile…..this was the beginning of the hyper-partisanship on the Hill and it eventually lead to the lies, misinformation and BS from both sides……and it trickled down to the masses, where they insult anyone who does not think like the ultras…..and it continues today….

Now that the history lesson is over….let us speak on the “Class of ’94″…….What have these whacky guys been doing for the last 16 years?  Well, let me see……(pause for effect)……..about 15 of those members of Congress seem to be doing as many people as they can…..what do you mean Professor?

It seems that the class of ’94 and its family values repartee was just that…….a lie to gain political advantage….huh?  At least 15 GOP members of the House of Representatives have been caught with their pants down…not literally but actually….names like Foley, who want to play hide the pickle with male staffers and Sanford, who hikes the Appalachian Trail and Ensign, who plays around with a staffers wife and then tries to bri9be his way out of the situation and now the latest Mark Souder.

Newser, I thank you for the excerpt……

Souder, a strong “family values” guy who made videos preaching about abstinence education with his married mistress (see video here). In one, he equates sex with smoking, and laments how tough it is to get them to abstain. “Nothing works very well,” he says. She nods sympathetically. She can relate.

In his resignation news conference he went about blaming the toxic atmosphere in Washington as the cause of his adulterous actions…..once again it is NOT his fault…it is the atmosphere in the Capital……yet again another Repub that will NOT take responsibility for his actions, but yet wants everybody else to do so.

The people that believe this a/hole need to demand their money returned from his paycheck….and next time try not to be so damn gullible!

Could “Family Values” Help Gay Marriage?

This subject has nothing but dynamite attached to it…..but the party of “family values” is losing its hold on the term.  Repub after Repub is caught in the act of marital infidelity, so how can they keep spouting the crap they spout?

Attorney Evan Wolfson has made some very compelling observations:

Wolfson doesn’t believe the central issue is Sanford’s infidelity. “It’s his abuse of power, his hypocrisy and his dereliction of public duty.” He paints all the “family values” politicians who commit marital infidelities with the same brush.

“They are all self-proclaimed moral crusaders who demonize and discriminate against some of their constituents because they’re gay and then turn around and flout the so-called morality that they invoked against gay people,” he said. “To me, the really unpardonable part is not their personal failings; it’s their political and policy choices that turn out to be so hypocritical and destructive.”

So, then, why do social conservatives insist on linking marriage and religion when same-sex marriage advocates are not asking that religious institutions must marry lesbians and gays, Wolfson says there are really two different groups at play:

He believes that there are some among the opposition who are truly “theocratic” and would like to impose on others their biblically derived laws in defiance of the U.S. Constitution. But others use religion as an excuse because they are still uncomfortable with gay people and conflicted about the freedom to marry.

How, then can marriage equality advocates use the “family values” politicians committing marital indiscretions to their advantage? “I think that their hypocrisy speaks for itself and helps move the case for legalization forward,” Wolson said. “Because many of them have been the bomb-throwing leaders of the anti-gay campaign, every time one of them is taken out it allows for the fair-minded to think anew and move in the right direction.”

Advocates aren’t just sitting by watching the conservative hypocrites self-destruct. They are reaching out to those who are religious and remain on the fence about supporting same-sex marriage.

I really hate to be a buzz kill….but the religious right will not get off the marriage thing…no matter how many of their “flock” stray.

McCain Urged On Social Issues

Conservative leaders met with Sen. John McCain to urge the Republican presidential contender to talk more about social issues on the stump in order to get conservatives to the voting booths.

“If he doesn’t start talking about the social issues, I don’t see how he can possibly win Ohio,” said Phil Burress, head of Citizens for Community Values, a Christian group advocating family values.

Mr. Burress said he sent a clear message to Sen. McCain, but the senator made no promises he would incorporate conservative voters’ priorities — including opposing abortion, gay marriage and pornography — into his stump speech. At a town hall meeting Thursday afternoon prior to the meeting, Sen. McCain didn’t mention social issues.

This is pretty good advice, John.  You spend too much time throwing barely understandable energy policy out there or you thump your chest like a sex crazed primate on national security.  Look at all the polls!  The people will vote with their wallets this time around and if you have no stands on the issues importasnt to the voter, then you will be a loser and in the largest way.
