Black History Month–William Carney

During Black History Month I like to spotlight some people that most Americans have never heard of or the contribution they made to our society….

Who was the first African-American to win the Congressional Medal of Honor?

You guessed it…….William Carney.

William Carney was the first African-American recipient.

He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on July 18, 1863 at Fort Wagner, S.C. while a member of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in the Civil War — the state’s first all-black regiment. During the disastrous battle at Ft. Wagner, Carney noticed that the man who carried the flag had been wounded.

So Carney bravely rescued the flag and carried it for him. He delivered it safely to his regiment and reportedly shouted “Boys, the old flag never touched the ground.” Carney was wounded during the battle but was not killed.

After the war he spent 31 years working for the postal service. Finally, in May 1900, Carney became the first African-American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. His brave deed is depicted on the Saint-Gaudens Monument in Boston and the rescued flag is enshrined in Memorial Hall, also in Boston.

“Assie” Award–Feb2017

It is the last Sunday of the month and time to announce the monthly winner of the Assie Award……..

There were 4 moronic statements made this month….well actually more than that after all we have idiots running the asylum now….but the 4 were boiled down to the 2 and the winner is……..

Oklahoma state Representative….. Justin Humphrey…and his abortion bill (HB1441)…..which require a woman to get a man’s permission before proceeding….

“I believe one of the breakdowns in our society is that we have excluded the man out of all of these types of decisions. I understand that [women] feel like that is their body. I feel like it is a separate—what I call them is, is you’re a “host.” And you know when you enter into a relationship you’re going to be that host and so, you know, if you pre-know that then take all precautions and don’t get pregnant.”

After much deliberation my colleagues and I have picked the winner……(Drum roll if you please)……

Asshat “Assie” Award–Jan2017

It is Sunday and I continue my two days away from the headlines and the utter stupidity of the DC two step….

Before I go any further there is some sad news….actor John Hurt has died at age 77…….

The versatile British actor Sir John Hurt, who could move audiences to tears in The Elephant Man, terrify them in Alien, and spoof that very same scene in Spaceballs, has died. He was 77. Hurt, who battled pancreatic cancer, died Friday in London, according to his agent, Charles McDonald. Twice nominated for an Oscar, for playing the tortured John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man and for his role as the heroin addict Max in Midnight Express, Hurt’s career spanned over 50 years. After minor television and film appearances, his breakout came in 1966 as Richard Rich in Fred Zinnemann’s A Man For All Seasons, followed by his portrayal of Caligula in the BBC miniseries I, Claudius in 1976.

(let’s not forget his portrayal of Winston in the movie 1984 with Richard Burton)

Sad day…he will be missed….may he rest in peace.

I let my readers know that I was re-starting my award, the “Asshat” Award, the “assies”…..there will be 11 monthly winners and an annual winner to be announced in late December…..and I will ask my readers to join in the process of picking the annual winner…..

January of 2017 had so much utter ignorance and stupidity with people spouting bullshit and passing it off as truth that it was difficult to pick a winner for the month…..so to re-start the award there will be 2 winners…..

There you have the winner/s for the month of January 2017…. congrats to them…the award is richly deserved.  An email will be sent to their offices announcing their winning of this much coveted prize….

I believe the reason they won is obvious…if not get a 10 year old to explain it to you.  i am sure that I will hear back from the winners because this batch of morons has zero sense of humor.

The Magical Return Of The “Assie” Awards

My closing thought of the day…..30Dec16

A few years ago IST use to award a special prize, The “Assie” Awards, to the person that made the most stupid comment…past winners have been people like McCain and others….it was discontinued because there was not much participation…..you see I would post the nominees and let my readers vote for the one that was the biggest anal statement of the year.

After much thought and few people wanting to see the awards return I have decided to give it a try again….but this time the name will be changed to the Asshat Award from the original Anal-ocity Award.

I will attempt to award a monthly “Assie” and then those 11 winners will compete for the Annual “Assie”……please during this time if anyone sees or hears something they think would be a winner let me know….if it is used I will give credit to the person and/or blog that turned me onto it.

The monthly winners will be posted on the last day of the month….the month of December will not have a monthly winner so that IST can concentrate on the annual winner.

Since I decided this recently there was NO time for an annual thing so I found what I considered a bonehead statement for the 2016 award…..

The 2016 winner of the IST “Assie” Award is GOP rep of Michigan, Bill Huizenga…….

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.) says there’s “definitely” going to be changes in health care delivery after Republicans repeal the Affordable Care Act, and people are going to need to take more responsibility for the cost of their treatment.

He gave a personal example of how do this: When his 10-year-old son recently fell on the driveway one evening and injured his arm, Huizenga waited until the next day to take him to the doctor because it cost less than bringing him to the emergency room that night.

DUDE!

I believe that the reason this person won the award is damn obvious……

To the honorable Rep. Bill Huizenga…..congrats on your award……and we at IST look forward to your views in 2017….Good luck.  (a copy of this post will be emailed to the office of the winner)

Good News Is A Joy!

The weekend begins and I got some good unexpected news….I mean there is more than enough bad news out there….so nay small amount of good news is a joy…..my news was some unexpected pats on the back……

All of us bloggers are always wanting to know if we are doing a good job….we want to know that our posts are well received….well at least I do……and we all hope to be appreciated….

There are always these websites that want your hard earned money to promote your site or there are some sites that will give you an award of some sort if you will commit your readers to do the same thing….personally. I appreciate the award, if you will, but I usually do not participate for my readers may not appreciate having to share stuff with others…..

So while farting around the other day on-line I came across something that I did not know existed……so I had to check it out….I am if nothing else a curious bird…..the post was about my blog, In Saner Thought,……
