IST Saturday News Dump–18Oct25

All the news you cannot possibly use….it’s Saturday….

Local–Cruisin’ The Coast is done so traffic is lighter and not as many tourist wondering around….temps are up and down like a yo-yo

Personal–Another laid back week anticipating the return to chemo next week….the joys of cancer treatment….

All the stuff no one cares about out of the way….let’s start with medical news….

Since I am being treated for cancer I am always watching for news about the treatment and detection of the dreaded disease….

Scientists in Australia have made a major discovery about how cancer might start in the body.

They found that tiny circular pieces of genetic material, called circular RNAs, may damage our DNA and lead to cancer.

These molecules were once thought to be unimportant, but this new study shows they may play a much bigger role in our health.

The study was led by researchers at Flinders University and is opening up a whole new area of cancer research. The team, led by Professor Simon Conn, discovered that certain circular RNAs can stick to the DNA in our cells.

When they do, they can cause breaks in the DNA. Although our cells try to repair these breaks, the repairs are not always perfect. Mistakes can happen, and those mistakes—called mutations—can lead to cancer.

The scientists named this new process ER3D, which stands for endogenous RNA-directed DNA damage. It’s the first time scientists have found that circular RNA, which comes from our own body, could directly damage DNA and start the process that leads to cancer.

Let’s hope this leads to something positive in detection….

A new discovery in the treatment of cancer…..

A new cancer treatment that uses LED light and microscopic flakes of tin may offer patients a safer, less painful alternative to chemotherapy and surgery.

The approach, developed through a collaboration between The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Porto in Portugal, shows promise in killing cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

Traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation often come with severe side effects because they damage healthy cells as well as cancerous ones.

Photothermal therapy—an experimental method that uses light to heat up and destroy cancer cells—has been viewed as a potential alternative.

However, the technique has faced hurdles, including high costs, the need for powerful lasers, and the risk of harming nearby healthy cells.

The new research, published in ACS Nano, could overcome those barriers.

As a person who suffers from pain and at times extreme pain I am always watching for news on that front as well….’shrooms may be the answer….

Psilocybin is a natural psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms that affects mood and perception. In a new study, researchers found that a single dose of psilocybin quieted chronic pain and depression-like behavior within 24 hours.

The benefits persisted for at least 12 days, even though the original injuries were still visible.

The benefits persisted for at least 12 days, even though the original injuries were still visible.

These receptors sit on nerve cells, respond to serotonin, and help regulate mood and pain. The change did not come from numbing nerves in the injured paw or the spine of the mice used in this study.

More news on cancer research….

Scientists from the Francis Crick Institute and Vividion Therapeutics have discovered a group of chemical compounds capable of selectively stopping the interaction between the cancer-linked gene RAS and a key signaling pathway that drives tumor growth.

These potential drugs have now advanced to their first human clinical trial. If proven safe and effective, they could provide a new way to treat a wide range of cancers while minimizing harm to healthy cells.

The RAS gene plays a central role in triggering cell growth pathways and is mutated in roughly one out of every five cancers. When this gene mutates, it locks the RAS protein into a permanently active state, continuously signaling cancer cells to grow and divide.

Normally, the RAS protein sits on the cell membrane and acts as the first “runner” in a chain reaction that controls cell growth. However, shutting down RAS or the enzymes it influences entirely can produce unwanted side effects, since these same pathways are essential for normal cell function. One such enzyme, known as PI3K, also works with insulin to regulate blood sugar, so blocking it too strongly can lead to hyperglycemia.

What to do with that ‘used’ human waste?

As the outlet reported, fertilizer supply issues and prices are rising around the world. Farmers could use a hand keeping fields healthy, and spreading biochar looks to have made positive changes in soil retention of water and nutrients.

For example, biochar created a 52% boost in organic carbon content after four years of soil application. Over the same time period, it lowered the amount of planet-heating gas coming out of the soil, including 13.5% less methane and 21% less nitrous oxide, Phys.org reported.

“Long-term annual applications sustain and even enhance the benefits on crop yields,” the researchers wrote.

The team found that creating the substance out of solid human feces could make a similar difference. Given the ready supply waiting in sewage treatment plants, the scientists estimated it could cover up to 7% of the globe’s total use of phosphorus, a core ingredient in fertilizers. Adding in parts of human urine could more than double that output, Phys.org explained.

Is that really that new and innovative?

More tools for surveillance…..

Forget robot wolves and missile-deflecting satellites — those things are already becoming old news. Instead, future wars just might revolve around insect-size spy robots.

A recent digest of present-day microbots by US national security magazine The National Interest breaks down the many machines currently in development by the US military and its associates. They include sea-based microdrones, cockroach-style surveillance bots, and even cyborg insects.

Arguably the most refined program to date is the RoboBee, currently being shopped by Harvard’s Wyss Institute. Originally funded by a $9.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation in 2009, the RoboBee is a bug-sized autonomous flying vehicle capable of transitioning from water to air, perching on surfaces, and autonomous collision avoidance in swarms.

The RoboBee features two “wafer-thin” wings that flap some 120 times a second to achieve vertical takeoff and mid-air hovering. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has reportedly taken a keen interest in RoboBee prototypes, sponsoring research into microfabrication technology, presumably for quick field deployments.

For years there has been a nagging question….how do we explain MAGA and those drooling babbling supporters….

With all my reading and research I believe I have found the definitive answer….

Chimpanzees are our closest relatives, so it’s not surprising that they can do many of the things that we can.

They’re able to create tools and can even use sign language, plus they share 98.8 per cent of their DNA with humans.

It is, therefore, no wonder that the question has often been asked: could humans and chimps ever produce offspring?

Gordum Gallup made the eyebrow-raising claims in an interview with The Sun Online back in 2018.

He told the news site that a human-chimpanzee hybrid – which he dubbed a “humanzee” – was born in a Florida lab 100 years ago.

And if you’re wondering how the scientists behind the experiment managed to keep it hushed up for decades, it’s because – according to Gallup – they swiftly killed the infant when they realised the implications of what they’d done.

Gallup, a professor at New York’s University at Albany, said his former university teacher told him that the secret birth took place at a research facility in Orange Park, where he used to work.
