What Is The History Of AI

My loyal readers know that I am history buff and try to inject it into as many of my posts as I can….so when the fad of writing about AI became a thing I thought….hey….history.

This my small attempt to put some clarity on the whole AI debate by looking back at its history.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a long history that dates back to ancient times. The idea of machines or devices that can imitate human behavior and intelligence has intrigued humans for centuries. However, the field of AI as we know it today began to take shape in the mid-20th century.

During World War II, researchers began to explore the possibilities of creating machines that could simulate human thinking and problem-solving. The concept of AI was formalized in 1956 when a group of researchers organized the Dartmouth Conference, where they discussed the potential of creating intelligent machines.

In the following years, AI research experienced significant advancements. Researchers developed algorithms and programming languages that could facilitate machine learning and problem-solving. They also started to build computers and software systems that could perform tasks traditionally associated with human intelligence.

One of the key milestones in AI history was the development of expert systems in the 1980s. These systems were designed to mimic the decision-making processes of human experts in specific domains. They proved to be useful in areas such as medicine and finance.

In the 1990s, AI research shifted towards probabilistic reasoning and machine learning. Scientists began to explore the potential of neural networks and genetic algorithms to create intelligent systems capable of learning from data and improving their performance over time.

Today, AI has become an integral part of our daily lives. It powers virtual assistants, recommendation systems, autonomous vehicles, and many other applications. AI continues to evolve and advance, with ongoing research in areas such as deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

The history of AI is characterized by significant achievements and breakthroughs. From its early beginnings as a concept to its current status as a transformative technology, AI has come a long way. As researchers and scientists continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, we can expect even more exciting developments and applications of AI in the future.

But What Will Happen?

Lots of noise on blogs about climate change and the extreme weather but very little about the news of a possible collapse of the Gulf Stream in about 2 years.

Why?

I few days ago I wrote about the report that the Gulf Stream was fading and could be gone by 2025….that’s right! We are talking about 2 years or so.

To remind you what was written….

There Is A Change A’Coming

If you more detail then this article may help….

https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/climate-change/gulf-stream-current-could-collapse-in-2025-plunging-earth-into-climate-chaos-we-were-actually-bewildered

Now for the meat of this post….if and when the current collapses what can we expect?

But what happens when AMOC runs amok? A sudden influx of freshwater from Greenland will inevitably stop the salt water from sinking as it usually does, causing havoc in the cycle. People living in Europe and the U.S. are likely to experience extremely unpleasant changes to their environment in addition to enormous sea level rises that could submerge East Coast cities like New York and Boston. Those not sweating it out due to rising temperatures will live in a frozen hellscape and all of us will be battered by unpredictable weather.

While you may associate climate change with increased warming — this is only part of the terrifying tale. A sudden disruption of the Gulf Stream’s helpful currents could cause a return to ice-age-like conditions in the world’s already chilly North.

You may remember this effect occurring in the silly but entertaining disaster flick “The Day After Tomorrow,” albeit in the film it happens way too quickly and in a sensationalized fashion. Still, sudden drastic changes could potentially happen quite quickly; when AMOC was last disrupted — during the last Ice Age — temperatures changed by 10 to 15 degrees in just 10 years (via CNN).

Europe is likely to be particularly severely affected because, in truth, the continent should be much colder than it is given its latitude. It is only the ocean currents that prevent Europe from being enveloped by icy cold conditions. The U.K., for example, is parallel with Northern Canada but doesn’t get particularly cold. In the worst-case scenario, the sea ice that currently blankets the Arctic would become a common sight much further south. Speaking to Vice magazine, climate scientist Peter Ditlevsen remarked “We would probably get a climate in Western Europe more like the climate in Alaska.” In the tropics, on the other hand, temperatures would continue to soar.

Soirée to be a bummer but it is best you see for yourself and not depend on idiot politicians to try and make it sound less threatening than it is.

Hide your heads if you will but that solves nothing is just it easier for you to show your ass.

I do believe change is coming and you will have to deal with it whether you want to or not.

But hey….what do I know?

Grow Your Own

Another hot Sunday and my search for something akin to FYI was in vain so this is my next best thing.

For the last couple of decades I have had a small garden to grow tomatoes, greens, carrots, radish, cucumbers…and lots of fruit trees….tangerines, satsumas, plums and figs and a few blueberry plants…..nothing to write home about but it keeps us in fresh grown food for several months….always a welcome treat.

This year because of a very mild winter the field mouse population has exploded and they in turn look to me for their food supply….my two pups do a find job of protecting the garden but they can only work so fast….I am thinking of training them to use pellet rifles.

I have a problem with all the GMO stuff….I am old so I remember what a fresh peach, tomato, plum, etc should taste like and the ‘fresh’ stuff in grocery stores does not come close.

Stop all this whining and get to the point, right?

I wish something could be done to change all that….well sports fans one Dem is trying and has been for 26 years…

Each year for the last 26 years – nearly his entire tenure in the US Congress – Earl Blumenauer has advocated for a law that would utterly transform US agriculture.

Nearly every time, though, his proposals have been shut down. Even so, he persists.

Blumenauer, a Democrat from Oregon, wants to see a version of US agriculture that centers people, animals and the environment, rather than the large-scale, energy-intensive commodity crop farms that currently receive billions of dollars in subsidies. In effect, he has a completely different vision for how 40% of the country’s land looks and works.

“Every year is an uphill battle. We’re up against entrenched, wealthy, strong interests,” said Blumenauer, known for his signature bowtie, circular glasses and bicycle enamel pin. He’s the spitting image of a progressive environmentalist and doesn’t shy from discussing some of agriculture’s most divisive issues.

But he remains optimistic and steadfast in his vision for the American food system. Now more than ever, he feels momentum and support surrounding the future of farming and food production. People care about where their food comes from and what kind of impact their food is having on the climate, he says.

Blumenauer’s newest plan, the Food and Farm Act, was introduced earlier this year, as an alternative to the farm bill – the package of food and agricultural policies passed every five years that is up for renewal this fall. His proposal would redirect billions of dollars away from subsidies for commodity farms towards programs that support small farmers, climate-friendly agriculture and increasing healthy food access.

The bill also prioritizes food waste management and animal welfare – areas that have been completely neglected by previous iterations of the farm bill.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/26/earl-blumenauer-agriculture-farm-bill-congress

All Dems should step away from their paymasters at Big Agri and get on board with a bill that makes sense.

It is a shame that I learned of this from a UK newspaper…apparently agribusiness has its claws in the MSM as well as Congress.

We all should be in support of this effort for it makes a lot of sense (maybe that is why it is not popular).

IST Saturday News Dump–29Jul23

Another weekend with heat and sweat…..but I am happy to report that no one used a nuke….Russia is not marching down Main Street…on a more sad note….some Americans were shot….some famous person died….

It is Summer and vacation time….how about a trip to a haunted town for a change?

There’s an area that falls into this very category in Connecticut, but there’s a pretty good chance you’ve never heard of it, because it’s illegal to even step foot there.

The story of this haunting goes all the way back to the early 1740s, when a group of people, many of who were of the Dudley family, settled in the area located in a portion of Cornwall, CT and named it Dudleytown.

It’s located in a valley called the Dark Entry Forest – red flag much? – and was used as a farm until the 19th century, when many of the residents left for somewhere with more fertile land.

Now, that might not sound like a recipe for a haunting, but what if I told you that the town seemed to be a hotspot for death?

All this hysteria around nukes these days…isd it possible that we were and on the brink and saved by an unlikely entity?

Are aliens the one who prevented humanity from descending into a nuclear war? That’s what a former NASA astronaut claims.

Edgar Mitchell, who was part of the Apollo 14 mission to the moon, gained notoriety with the dissemination of various conspiracy theories since his return from the moon in 1971.

Mitchell, the sixth man to set foot on the moon, was interviewed back in 2016, where he admitted to being convinced of the existence of aliens and extensively spoke about claims that aliens have visited Earth.

In that conversation with the Daily Mirror, he raised the astonishing claim that aliens were responsible for preventing a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union during the peak tension of the Cold War.

How about a AI girlfriend?

Is there anyone old enough to remember Dr. Goldfoot and his FemBots?

Our modern world is so alienating that legions of lonely men are turning to an unlikely source of comfort: AI-generated girlfriends, powered by chatbot tech.

We already knew that could lead to some dark places, but new reporting from The Guardian suggests that these endlessly patient silicon fembots — Replika is one such popular app that generates AI companions — could be spawning a new generation of incelswho will have trouble relating to actual people if they ever enter into a relationship with a flesh-and-blood human.

Tara Hunter, the acting CEO for the domestic violence advocacy group Full Stop Australia, expressed alarm over the rise of these chatbots in an interview with the newspaper.

“Creating a perfect partner that you control and meets your every need is really frightening,” Hunter said. “Given what we know already that the drivers of gender-based violence are those ingrained cultural beliefs that men can control women, that is really problematic.”

With the worldwide extreme heat comes with massive sun exposure….what to do, what to do?

As climate change continues to send global temperatures skyrocketing, apocalypse-friendly fashion accessories are apparently becoming increasingly commonplace. Case in point, according to new reporting from The Guardian, residents and visitors of the blistering city of Beijing, China have taken particularly fondly to a little something called the “facekini” — a summertime ski-mask-meets-swimming-cap of sorts made from UV-resistant fabrics and designed to cover a wearer’s entire head and face.

The skintight coverings have openings only for a wearer’s eyes, nostrils, and mouths. Yes, they’re terrifying. But with Beijing air and ground surface temps reportedly reaching highs upwards of 95 and even roughly 176 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively, you can’t say it isn’t practical.

https://futurism.com/the-byte/climate-change-accessory-facekinis

This might not catch on here in the US for wearing one of these could possibly get one shot by the police thinking that one is some sort of terrorist.

Did you see Jurassic Park and its hundreds of knock offs?

It appears that some sleeping beast has awaken….

Scientists have revived a possibly extinct microscopic worm that survived in Siberian permafrost for nearly 50,000 years. Nematodes, better known as roundworms, were found inside a fossilized squirrel burrow some 130 feet underground near Siberia’s Kolyma River in 2002, per the Wall Street Journal. Scientists successfully resuscitated the worms in a warm petri dish in 2018 but were unsure of their age and species. In a study published Thursday in PLOS Genetics, they reveal them to be a previously unknown and possibly extinct species, Panagrolaimus kolymaensis. New carbon dating on the permafrost in which the nematodes were found suggests they last awoke when Neanderthals and woolly mammoths wandered the Earth some 46,000 years ago.

As the Arctic ice melts could there be some unseen horror waiting to take control?

Science fiction is rife with fanciful tales of deadly organisms emerging from the ice and wreaking havoc on unsuspecting human victims.

From shape-shifting aliens in Antarctica, to super-parasites emerging from a thawing woolly mammoth in Siberia, to exposed permafrost in Greenland causing a viral pandemic – the concept is marvellous plot fodder.

But just how far-fetched is it? Could pathogens that were once common on Earth – but frozen for millennia in glaciers, ice caps and permafrost – emerge from the melting ice to lay waste to modern ecosystems? The potential is, in fact, quite real.

Are We Beyond Global Warming?

The hot (pun intended) topic of the week is that of global warming and the extreme weather we are all experiencing.

Since everyone on blogs is fascinated with this extreme heat I thought I would bow to social convention and focus on the weather as well.

We all are suffering somehow with the climate these days…..I live in the Deep South and for us it is extreme heat, 100-115, most days and the lack of rainfall.

And of course people ask the rhetorical question, will this agony ever end?

Is the answer for which you search?

According to the UN research we have moved past global warming and into global boiling……

July has been so hot that scientists calculate that this month will be the hottest globally on record and likely the warmest human civilization has seen, even though there are several days left remaining to sweat through. The World Meteorological Organization and the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service on Thursday proclaimed July’s heat is beyond record-smashing, the AP reports. They said Earth’s temperature has been temporarily passing over a key warming threshold: the internationally accepted goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius—2.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Some scientists calculate that this month is the hottest in about 120,000 years.

Temperatures were 1.5 degrees higher than in pre-industrial times for a record 16 days this month, but the Paris climate accord aims to keep the 20- or 30-year global temperature average to 1.5 degrees. A few days of temporarily beating that threshold have happened before but never in July. This month has been so off-the-charts hot, with heat waves blistering three continents—North America, Europe and Asia—that researchers said a record was inevitable. The US Southwest’s all-month heat wave is showing no signs of stopping while also pushing into most of the Midwest and East with more than 128 million Americans under some kind of heat advisory Thursday.

“Unless an ice age were to appear all of sudden out of nothing, it is basically virtually certain we will break the record for the warmest July on record and the warmest month on record,” Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo told the AP. Scientists say that such shattering of records is a harbinger for future climate-altering changes as the planet warms. Those changes go beyond just prolonged heat waves and include more flooding, longer-burning wildfires, and extreme weather events that put many people at risk. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged world leaders, in particular of rich nations, to do more to reduce emissions of heat-trapping gases. Despite years of international climate negotiations and lofty pledges from many countries and companies, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.

Climate change is here. It is terrifying. And it is just the beginning,” Guterres told reporters in a New York briefing. “The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived.” Buontempo and other scientists said the records are from human-caused climate change augmented by a natural El Nino warming of parts of the central Pacific that changes weather worldwide. Copernicus calculated that through the first 23 days of July, Earth’s temperature averaged 16.95 degrees Celsius, 62.5 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s nearly one-third of a degree Celsius (almost 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than the previous record for the hottest month, July 2019.

With the news that the Gulf Stream could collapse by 2025 the news is not looking too rosy for the planet.

I hate to tell you(which is a lie) ‘I told you so’….but people like me have been saying this would happen and few listened especially politicians….they had rather bow to the slugs that throw money at them than care for the planet.

Why Ukraine?

I see that many are tired of this situation/story….so if we ignore it is not a thing anymore, right?

While they are ignoring the US is still wasting billions of dollars and little is being decided with the exception of the insane amount of money being made off this conflict.

But hey….ignorance is bliss and the American people are very blissful these days.

To return to the post….why Ukraine?

This is exactly what no one wants to ask because they relish the skewed headlines of the MSM on this issue.

We all know that Russia invaded Ukraine over 500 days ago and this conflicts has all the barbarity of war…..but has anyone, especially the media, bothered to ask why Russia invaded?

Personally I do not think it was at all about conquest but rather hoping to force a compromise on Ukraine and then it turned ugly.

None in the MSM as far as I know….a few bloggers like myself have tried to explain what prompted this action from Russia….but as usual no one wanted to know and dropped back to Russia marching down main street analogy…that explained nothing.

So I will try again and hopefully readers will see the folly (probably not)….

This article was written in 2022 and outlines six reasons for Russia’s invasion….

Here are six crucial pieces of background that the western media will not tell you.

The NATO Promise

Putin’s demands are only bold if it is bold to ask NATO to keep its promises; his demands are only impossible if it is impossible for NATO to keep its promises.

On February 9, 1990, Secretary of State James Baker assured Gorbachev that if NATO got Germany – a huge concession – NATO would not expand one inch east of Germany. The next day, West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher made the same promise to his Soviet counterpart, Eduard Shevardnadz. Earlier, on January 31, 1990, Genscher had already publicly declared in a major speech that there would not be “an expansion of NATO territory to the east, in other words, closer to the borders of the Soviet Union.”

Recently declassified documents make it clear that all the western powers, including not only the US and Germany but also the UK and France, repeatedly made Russia the same promise.

Seven years later, when the US had already broken that promise, Clinton made Russia a second promise. Having expanded NATO far east of Germany, at least they would not permanently station substantial combat forces. That was the promise the US signed in the NATO-Russia Founding Act on Mutual Relations. It was a reiteration of the earlier February 1990 promise that, not only NATO membership, but NATO troops would not extend east.

So, far from being bold or asking the ridiculous, what the media will not tell you is that Putin is not asking for any new Western concessions. He is asking only that the West honor the commitments it has already made.

Six Things the Media Won’t Tell You About Ukraine

A report illustrates how the M-IC sets the narrative for the war in Ukraine….

Wealthy donors have long funded think tanks with official-sounding names that produce research that reflects the interests of those funders (Extra!, 7/13). The weapons industry is a major contributor to these idea factories; a recent report from the Quincy Institute (6/1/23) demonstrates just how much influence war profiteers have on the national discourse.

The Quincy Institute—whose own start-up funding came mainly from George Soros and Charles Koch—looked at 11 months of Ukraine War coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, from March 1, 2022, through January 31, 2023, and counted each time one of 33 leading think tanks was mentioned. Of the 15 think tanks most often mentioned in the coverage, only one—Human Rights Watch—does not take funding from Pentagon contractors. Quincy’s analysis found that the media were seven times more likely to cite think tanks with war industry ties than they were to cite think tanks without war industry ties.

With 157 mentions each, the top two think tanks were the Atlantic Council and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Both of these think tanks receive millions from the war industry. The Atlantic Council has long been the brain trust of NATO, the military organization whose expansion towards Russia’s borders was a critical factor in Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. (See FAIR.org, 3/4/22.) Both think tanks receive hundreds of thousands of dollars from Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, companies which have already been awarded billions of dollars in Pentagon contracts as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Report Shows How Military Industrial Complex Sets Media Narrative on Ukraine

Look at the so-called ‘experts’ in the MSM….just about all are employed by a industry funded think tank or employed directly by one of the profiteering contractors….and yet that is where people get their opinions and seldom look beyond.

So the conversation bottoms out with flag waving and fear mongering that explains nothing but the ignorance of those that refuse to look past CNN or whoever.

You should care because it is your money being wasted and pissed away.

Randy Meisner–R.I.P.

I have been a fan of the Eagles since their beginning in 1971….I even saw them in NOLA at the Warehouse when they opened for Poco.

We lost Glen Frey a few years back and now another band member has died, Randy Meisner.

A second founding member of seminal rock band the Eagles has died. Randy Meisner, the group’s original bassist and the writer and lead singer of iconic hit “Take It to the Limit,” was 77, CNN reports. “The Eagles are sad to report that founding member, bassist, and vocalist, Randy Meisner, passed away last night (July 26) in Los Angeles at age 77, due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD),” a statement posted by the band Thursday reads. “Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band. His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.'”

Meisner played with Poco and Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band before forming the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Bernie Leadon, People reports. He left the band in 1976 because he was tired of touring, and did not perform with it again until its 1998 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He was invited to participate in the band’s 2013 world tour (he reportedly had not been invited to the 1994 reunion) but declined due to health reasons. Frey died in 2016 at age 67, and Leadon left the band in 1975. The band, which starts its farewell tour later this year, now consists of its last remaining original member, Henley; Timothy B. Schmit, Meisner’s replacement; Joe Walsh, Leadon’s replacement; Vince Gill, Frey’s replacement; and occasionally Frey’s son Deacon.

Sorry to see a true talent leave us….

IST good thoughts for his family and may he now rest in peace.

It would be appropriate to end this post with his amazing voice.

Your talent and voice will be missed….

Good-bye and thanx for the memories.

The Limit, Save, Grow Act

Another cute ploy by the GOP to screw the American worker under the guise of a misleading title.

Some may even know that most ‘spending’ bills originate in the House and with the GOP in limited control of that body we will see more and more con jobs to appear as if it is fiscal conservative….it is not it will make things worse for the job numbers and the workers and their families.

But that has never been a concern of the GOP….the people and their lives.

An analysis released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that House Republicans’ proposed cuts to federal spending for the coming fiscal year would kill 500,000 jobs and hinder economic growth, findings that Democrats seized on as further evidence of the GOP’s “willful disregard for the wellbeing of Americans.”

The CBO examined the potential economic impacts of Republicans’ Limit, Save, Grow Act (LSGA), legislation that the GOP-controlled House passed in late April amid a debt ceiling crisis that the party manufactured.

The White House and GOP leaders later struck a deal that included caps on discretionary spending for the next two fiscal years, but Republican appropriators have spent the past several weeks proposing cuts that are more in line with the LSGA, which took aim at Medicaid, federal food assistance, and other critical programs.

According to the CBO, the Republican bill’s far-reaching spending cuts would result in 0.5% lower GDP growth next year, which “would correspond to reductions in employment.” The CBO’s analysis indicates that roughly half a million workers would lose their jobs in 2024 if the LSGA became law.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), the chair of the Senate Budget Committee and the lawmaker who requested the CBO assessment, said in a statement that “these new cuts, in addition to being wildly unpopular, are shown to inflict widespread economic pain and drag down American economic growth.”

“Republicans shower the wealthy with budget-busting tax giveaways, then claim to care about deficits,” said Whitehouse. “In their anti-government, pro-polluter crusade, MAGA Republicans have no problem harming workers and families as collateral damage. On what planet is that fiscally responsible?”

https://www.commondreams.org/news/republican-spending-cuts

I know that the GOP hates it when they are questioned on their decisions….but sorry….I gotta ask….are you f*ckers high?

This is the kinda of stuff you get when you elect the criminals in the GOP.

GOP “Big Lie Bill”

Voters Beware!

Anyone that follows politics will see that the GOP is hard pressing for more and more anti-voter bills wherever they are in the positions of power….and the US House is no exception.

Enter the “Big Lie Bill” the GOP will be proposing…..

Voting rights advocates across the United States on Monday responded with alarm to Republicans introducing what its backers called “the most conservative election integrity bill to be seriously considered” in the U.S. House of Representatives in decades.

Dubbed the “Big Lie Bill” by critics, the American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act is spearheaded by Committee on House Administration Chair Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) and includes nearly 50 standalone bills from the chamber’s GOP members.

The Declaration for American Democracy (DFAD), a coalition of over 260 groups, said in a statement it was “deeply concerned” about the bill, warning that “the benign-sounding name of this legislation cloaks an extremist, anti-voter effort to increase the role of megadonors in our elections and encourage deliberate barriers to make it harder for eligible voters to cast their ballot.”

“This bill would amplify the influence of corporations and billionaires by raising contribution limits and reducing reporting and transparency requirements, opening the floodgates to even more secret money in our elections,” DFAD said. “Increasing the role of big money donors in our politics prevents Congress from taking action on the issues that matter most to Americans, such as healthcare, reproductive rights, gun safety, and the environment.”

https://www.commondreams.org/news/house-republicans-voting-bill

From gerrymandering to out right voter suppression the GOP will do what they must to make sure that their candidates have an unfair advantage….make it harder to exercise your right to vote instead of making the process easy and open to all eligible registered voters.

You might want to pay attention….you do realize that the 2024 election is a mere 16 months away.

Now is the time to start comparing candidates, the ones that have announced that is, so that you can make a good decision on your vote and possibly save this country from itself.

There Is A Change A’Coming

The extreme heat wave raging across the globe and others are getting a month’s rain in a couple of hours….so I guess I will bow to social convention and post on this situation.

I live in the deep South and since about late May we have been in a heat cycle with little to no rain….in the past couple of days our evening lows went from 90s to mid-70s….a welcome rest from the oppressive heat….our days are still pushing the 100 mark but at least the night is close to comfortable.

The news and the blogs have been awash with weather stories and dire predictions….so not to be the only blogger not jumping on that bandwagon I will relent and post a little something.

We all have heard of the Gulf Stream, but what is and what does it do?

The Gulf Stream is a small part of something called the ‘thermohaline circulation’ or ‘Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation’. This is a large, global-scale ocean conveyor belt driven by differences in temperature and salt content – the water’s density.

Originating at the tip of Florida, the Gulf Stream is a warm and swift Atlantic Ocean current that follows the eastern coastline of the US and Canada before crossing the Atlantic Ocean towards Europe. It ensures that the climate of Western Europe is much warmer than it would otherwise be.

As warm water flows from the equator to the poles it cools and some evaporation occurs, which increases the amount of salt. Low temperature and a high salt content means high density and the water sinks deep in the oceans. The cold, dense water also moves slowly. Eventually, it gets pulled back to the surface and warms in a process called “upwelling” and the circulation is complete.

This global process makes sure that the world’s oceans are continually mixed, and that heat and energy are distributed to all parts of the earth. This in turn contributes to the climate we experience today.

Now that that piece of knowledge has been dropped….could there be a change coming?

One of the climate change tipping points scientists are most worried about could arrive sooner than expected, with potentially disastrous consequences for billions of people, according to new research. In a study published in the journal Nature, Danish researcher Peter
Ditlevsen, a climate scientist, and his sister Susanne Ditlevsen, a professor of statistics, said their analysis suggests that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation—AMOC—network of ocean currents, which includes the Gulf Stream, could collapse before the end of this century. They said AMOC could severely weaken or shut down as soon as 2025 or as late as 2095, though the most likely time is midcentury under the “current scenario of future emissions, the New York Times reports.

The AMOC moves warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, but melting ice is a major problem, the researchers say. “Greenhouse gas emissions cause global warming, which speeds up the melting of Greenland ice,” the Ditlevsens explain to USA Today. “The melted freshwater entering the North Atlantic can then disrupt the AMOC, potentially causing major climate disruptions.” The extra freshwater, they say, is “lighter than the salty seawater around it” and can “disrupt the normal sinking of the salty water, weakening or even shutting down the AMOC.” If the AMOC is shut down disrupted, it could cool Europe and North America by a few degrees—but there would also be sea level rises and huge disruptions to rainfall in North America and beyond.

The change would disrupt agriculture in Asia, South America, and Africa, endangering the food supply for billions, the Guardian reports. “This would be a very, very large change,” Peter Ditlevsen says. “The AMOC has not been shut off for 12,000 years.” He says the research shows the urgent need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. While other scientists agree on the need to reduce emissions, some disagree with the Ditlevsens’ analysis, saying there is still much uncertainty about the tipping point for the AMOC and any collapse. One problem with the statistical analysis other researchers pointed to was the use of potentially inaccurate records going back to 1870

There you go….my little effort to give some knowledge about the future and the insane weather the world is dealing with these days…..

The next thing is….if change arrives where will we live?

To date, the climate migrations that have attracted federal policy attention in the United States generally have fallen under the category of “managed retreat.” Recall, for instance, the 2016 headlines announcing that Isle de Jean Charles, La., would receive $48 million in federal funds for a first-of-its-kind wholesale community resettlement project, or the Biden administration’s announcement last year that it had awarded $75 million to Indigenous communities in Alaska and Washington state to pack up and move. “Managed retreat,” or the planned relocation of vulnerable coastal communities to higher ground, is at once a proactive tactical move and an act of resignation—an acknowledgment that, in a warming world, some geographic communities are fated to disappear into the sea. But what should we make of this intense political fixation on managed retreat? And when climate migration policies prioritize the most extraordinary and poignant cases, who is left behind?
