Biden China Policy

The US policy of containment is the only policy Biden will allow…..a policy that has been the ‘norm’ for 70 years…..

Blinken compared the China of today with the China of a half century ago, saying it has moved from isolation and poverty to being a global power. He then claims that “China’s transformation . . . was also made possible by the stability and opportunity that the international order provides. Arguably, no country on Earth has benefited more from that than China.” He then accuses China of using its new found power, not to reinforce the international order that made it possible, but to undermine it.

Blinken’s accusation is an old one. It is an incarnation of the theory that Alexander Lukin, Head of International Relations at the HSE University in Moscow, says insinuates that China deceived the West by accepting its help in joining the international trade system and international organizations, making it possible to launch its economic growth, and then reneged on the implied agreement that it would then take its subordinate place, on America’s terms, in the international system under US hegemony.

The assumption behind Blinken’s charge against China is that membership in the international system supposes taking your place under US leadership and that any country that follows an alternative path to the US led path needs to be contained so that it does not challenge the world’s inevitable adoption of the American social, political and economic model and leadership.

Biden’s New China Policy

For the third time, President Joe Biden declared a new U.S. policy toward Taiwan, only to have his officials insist that nothing has changed.

The policies Biden is attempt to enforce are not all that new….

Then there is Taiwan….

While the world is focused on the prolonged war in Ukraine…Taiwan makes a move…..

China has scoffed at comparisons of itself and Taiwan to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But that hasn’t eased the fears of Taiwanese residents, who are now taking a step many never expected: getting firearms training. Although gun ownership is strongly regulated in Taiwan, people who’ve never picked up a weapon in their lives are flocking instead to sites that train in how to shoot less-dangerous airsoft guns, devices that fire off nonmetallic projectiles. “More and more people are coming to take part,” Max Chiang, the CEO of Polar Light, a combat skills training firm in Taipei, tells Reuters. He adds that signups for lessons in how to shoot airsofts have almost quadrupled since the war in Ukraine started in February. The news agency notes that “many of the movements and tactics involved” in shooting airsoft guns “resemble combat skills, from shooting posture to aiming.”

Polls have increasingly showed that the people of Taiwan are willing to defend themselves against a Chinese invasion if need be, reports the Los Angeles Times. Some, including retired Adm. Lee Hsi-ming, the former chief of the general staff of Taiwan’s armed forces, are even suggesting that civilians receive combat training and set up a DIY defense force, much like one that Ukraine employs (others say, however, that such a volunteer force isn’t currently feasible). Taiwan does currently have mandatory military service—four months for young men, plus occasional reservist training—but those who’ve been through it say they receive minimal firearms training. “I need to come to these kinds of lessons to actually learn something,” a 26-year-old personal trainer who’s gone through his conscription says of the airsoft gun training he’s now undergoing.

In short, many in Taiwan simply want to be prepared in case China one day tries to use force to sweep Taiwan more fully back into its fold. “I wanted to learn some combat skills,” including skills “to be able to react to any kind of situation,” one Taiwanese man, a tattoo artist, tells Reuters. “I … don’t want to go to war, but in the unfortunate event of this really happening, I will be mentally prepared.” The Taiwanese public is prepping for the worst in other ways as well, stocking up on food, batteries, and other emergency supplies, purchasing pepper spray, and rigging their homes with alarm systems. “Think about how you can help yourself and others survive,” one councilman candidate says.

More ‘Can’t Fix Stupid’

With the latest spat of mass shootings and deaths you would think that there would be some sort of moratorium on stupid statements out of some sort of respect for the dead….if you did think that then you are mistaken.

Over the weekend a couple of idiot women made some doozys of moronic statements…..

First an elected official from Colorado, Rep, Boebert……

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) speaks at a House Second Amendment Caucus press conference at the U.S. Capitol on June 8. (Photo: Kevin Dietsch via Getty Images)

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) joked this weekend about Jesus Christ using an AR-15 assault weapon to defend himself rather than face the Crucifixion.

Appearing at an event in Colorado Springs organized by the Charis Christian Center, Boebert said that “Twitter trolls” often challenge her about the contradiction between Jesus’ well-documented pacifism and her own support for gun rights.

“They like to say: ‘Oh, Jesus didn’t need an AR-15. How many AR-15s do you think Jesus would have had?’” she said, to laughter in the crowd. “Well, he didn’t have enough to keep his government from killing him.”

https://news.yahoo.com/lauren-boebert-jokes-jesus-could-201107696.html

Apparently not only is she ignorant on government, the Constitution but her ignorance also extends into religious teachings.

She definitely proves that you ‘can’t fix stupid’.

Next is a ‘Moms For Liberty’ that thinks librarians should be shot……

Melissa “Missy” Bosch is a mom for liberty. In fact, she is such a mom for liberty that she is the head of communications for a group calling themselves Moms for Liberty. As such, she would like to ban a whole lot of books from the library. Specifically books about Martin Luther King Jr., Native Americans, and LGBTQ people. What says liberty more than a good old fashioned book burning?

But books are not the only thing Bosch wants to destroy! In leaked audio of a recent Moms For Liberty meeting in Lonoke County, Arkansas, Bosch is heard complaining about a school librarian she felt did not offer her enough deference when she came in to complain about books. “I’m telling you, if I was — any mental issues, they would all be plowed down with a freaking gun by now,” Bosch said, before describing herself as a patient person.

Bosch was particularly outraged that this librarian was paid $85,000 a year and was not interested in answering her questions on “the policy” for allowing books into the library.

After this, she and her cohorts had a good laugh about the hypothetical unfairness of the fact that if she, a conservative Republican, were to have “one moment of weakness where you flip” and say “the F word” or perhaps innocently gun down a school librarian, no one would ever let them live it down.

There is also some video available of this particular meeting, in which you can hear one of them clearly say, “I shouldn’t be telling you this, but she advocates dirty books. Chaucer! Rabelais! BALZAC!” before accusing the librarian of making brazen overtures towards “Old Meiser Madison.”

Apparently ‘Moms For Liberty’ do not believe you have the right to choose what you read….so much for the freedom of choice.

Another example of you ‘can’t fix stupid’…..

“You Can Live On Less Money”

This is about Social Security….I watch these things because I live on SS and I am always interested on the antics by the Congress, especially the GOPers, that try every year to screw the majority of our retired people.

Sen. Graham of South Carolina has uttered another stupidity when talking about the solvency of the Social Security system…..

In a June 13 Fox Nation debate, Sen. Lindsey Graham said seniors may have to “take a little less” and “pay a little more in” when debating Social Security solvency, reports Knewz via MSN. Graham made the comments while debating Sen. Bernie Sanders during a “Senate Project” debate.

“Let’s do something like Ted Kennedy would do: get Republicans and Democrats to find a way — like the Gang of Six, the Simpson-Bowles plan. Senator Sanders: bring your Social Security plan to the floor. All it does is raise taxes. To get out of this mess, people like me are going to have to take a little less and pay a little more in. We’re going to have to adjust the age one more time like Ronald Reagan and Tip — Tip O’Neil did. There is a bipartisan way forward. You describe problems, but your answer is always the government — it’s always socialism,” Graham said.

Let me help Graham out here…..SS is a governmental program so yes the answer is the government….it’s not rocket science Lindsey(or maybe it is for him).

Let me see if I have this right…..the US dumps billions upon billions of taxpayer money into Ukraine….and billions into Taiwan…..and he wants the retired Americans to take less money…..maybe a better idea is since the Congress is impotent in working for the nation maybe he and his colleagues should take a pay cut….after all their pay day is a mere penitence of the cash they get from bribes from lobbyists.

Graham asks us to learn to live on less money and he lives high on the horse.

To Graham all I have to say is “BITE ME”!

Time for the American people to wake the Hell up!

Your taxes are being wasted on stupidity like war….while your reality is a struggle….is that what you signed up to do?

Congress and the White House are not your friends….time for something to be done to take the country back from the oligarchs that own the Congress and the White House.

Learn the issues and do the right thing for yourself and the country….vote them out and start over from scratch.

Does Recession Loom Large?

All the indicators point to a recession on the horizon (some think it has begun already)…rising prices, food shortages, housing problems, markets unstable, all the indicators are there….

As the economic issues get worse and worse many are asking what is happening and what can we do…..

We all want answers so we can cope…..maybe this will either terrify you or help with your questions.

The stock market actually rose Wednesday in the immediate aftermath of the Fed’s decision to raise rates by a whopping 0.75%. Thursday, not so much. Major indexes fell more than 2% in early trading and sent the Dow below 30,000, its lowest level in more than a year, reports the Street and CNBC. In short, the new bear market only deepened. Now the big question: Will a recession follow? A look at coverage, including some of the many advice pieces now moving:

  • Context: A recession might well be on the way, if it hasn’t already arrived, writes Jeff Sommer in the New York Times. Its dry definition—”a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months”—doesn’t capture the “grim” economic toll it will take on households. But Sommer puts things in context, noting that recessions and bear markets might be more common than you think. The US, in fact, has been in recession 14% of the time since WWII. Among Sommer’s tips: Consider putting cash into I bonds from the Treasury Department, as well as money market funds, which will now be paying more interest.
  • Impact: Among other things, the steep rate hike means home and auto loans will continue to get more expensive, and you’ll pay more in interest on credit card debt, per Axios. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage, for example, is now about 6%, double last year’s figure. And the average rate for credit cards is now 16.7% (and rising), up from 16% last year.
  • How bad? CNBC rounds up the opinions of economic strategists, and they seem pretty certain a recession is imminent. For example, Andrea Dicenso of Loomis Sayles puts the chances of a global recession at 75%. The silver lining: Dicenso and others say the Fed’s aggressive action could make the recession a “shallow” one and thus less painful. “If it’s a shallower recession, which I suspect it would be in the third quarter, the Fed actually has some room now to come back off of some of those rate increases,” says Michael Yoshikami of Destination Wealth Management.
  • Advice: A Washington Post column by Michelle Singletary has tips on handling a bear market and a possible recession. The first is in the don’t-panic vein. “Just shift your view a little bit and look at this as an opportunity if you’re a longer-term investor,” says one strategist. But in terms of tangible things to do: Eliminate credit debt, perhaps with a low-interest personal loan or a balance-transfer credit card. (See a related point in the item below.) Also, consider a side gig to boost emergency reserves, because “the standard advice of having three to six months’ worth of living expenses may not be enough.”
  • What not to do: Veronica Dagher at the Wall Street Journal digs into three common mistakes people make at such times. One is dipping too deeply into emergency funds to pay off credit card and other debt. It’s a balancing game that requires more finesse. A lot of people also reduce or eliminate allotments into their 401(k) funds, but that has some drawbacks, including the loss of employer matching funds. A third is not changing spending habits at all.

I hope this will answer few of your questions for the coming days…..and helps you prepare.

“God Has A Plan”

In this recent spat of mass killings has brought about the usual BS from some….most of them are excuses or just pathetic rhetoric….kinda like the “thoughts and prayers” POS….and the equally stupid is the usual “bad people do bad things” and when we thought that it could not get more moronic the proverbial other shoe drops.

This time from an elected official from Texas (where else)…..

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is facing criticism after saying that his message to the families of the 19 students killed by a gunman at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school last month would be that “God always has a plan” and “Life is short no matter what it is.”

In a May interview with right-wing radio host Trey Graham, 59-year-old Paxton said he would be “devastated” if he lost one of his children, but added that he would tell other parents who lost a child in the shooting that “there’s always a plan.”

“If I lost one of my children I’d be pretty devastated, especially in a way that is so senseless and seemingly has no purpose,” Paxton said. “I think … I would just have to say, if I had the opportunity to talk to the people I’d have to say, look, there’s always a plan. I believe God always has a plan. Life is short no matter what it is. And certainly, we’re not going to make sense of, you know, a young child being shot and killed way before their life expectancy.”

advisor to former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, social media users criticized Paxton who, as one person pointed out, “has been Attorney General of Texas since January 2015, only slightly less time than the Uvalde victims were alive.”

Another user referenced comments Paxton once made about the COVID-19 pandemic — when he suggested senior citizens should be “willing to take a chance on [their] survival in exchange for keeping the America that America loves” — writing: “It’s always fine to sacrifice someone else’s grandparents or kids. His people will have the best protection and healthcare money can buy.”

God has a plan?

Is that plan to force children to be born so they can be killed later in school?

Great plan but if that is the best he/she can then I suggest they stop drinking and pay attention.

I want NO part of that plan!

People like this d/bag proves just how moronic this situation has become…..more so than in the past.

Idiotic statements like this one above could be a reason why there has been a drop….

The last five years has apparently taken a big toll on Americans’ belief in God—especially among the young, the liberal, and Democrats. Gallup says that in its latest poll, a new low of 81% of Americans said they believed in God, down from 87% in 2017 and from a solid 98% throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Belief fell among every category of people Gallup spoke to, by more than 10% among Democrats, liberals, and adults 18 to 29, but by only 1% among Republicans and married people. Belief in God among women fell from 90% to 83%, according to Gallup. Among men, it fell from 83% to 80%.

Gallup says it has asked Americans about their belief in God in several ways over the years, sometimes phrasing it as belief in “God or a universal spirit.” The pollsters say the highest proportion of people express belief in God when it is phrased as a yes/no question. The proportion dipped significantly when respondents were given the option of saying they were unsure—and even more when they were asked if they were “convinced” that God exists. In the most recent poll, around half of those who said they believed in God said they believe God hears prayers and can intervene.

Other polls have found that while belief in a higher being has been gradually falling over the years, traditional religion is declining a lot faster, the Hill reports. Last year, Gallup said church membership had fallen below 50% for the first time to a record low of 47%, with numbers dropping sharply even among those who described themselves as religious. Gallup says confidence in organized religion has also dropped, “suggesting that the practice of religious faith may be changing more than basic faith in God.”

The Mouth Of The South

I am referring to Rep. Taylor-Green……one could dedicate a whole blog to the idiocy that she spreads with daily posts….her moronic dribble flows out of her mouth with ease.

Her latest regurgitation are legendary….

Did you know that climate change is good for us?

Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told Right Side Broadcasting Network host Brian Glenn on Monday that global warming is “actually healthy.”

“We have already warmed 1-degree Celsius and do you know what has happened since then?” Greene told Glenn, apparently confirming she believes in global warming as a trend.

While Greene nailed the degree to which the planet has warmed, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) says the planet has warmed at least 1.1° Celsius (1.9° Fahrenheit) since 1880, she then offered a much less conventional take on its impact.

“We have had more food grown since then, which feeds people,” she claimed, arguing that the temperature increase has been a net positive.

“We are producing fossil fuels, that keeps people’s houses warm in the winter. That saves people’s lives, people die in the cold,” she continued.

“This Earth warming and carbon is actually healthy for us. It helps us to feed people, it helps keep people alive, the Earth is more green than it was years and years ago and that is because of the Earth warming,” Greene added, without offering evidence.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Believes in Climate Change, Says it is ‘Actually Healthy For Us’: ‘People Die in the Cold’

Her lunacy over climate change was beyond absurd….but she topped it with her thoughts on Tampons….

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene spread a baseless, transphobic rumor that blamed the country’s ongoing tampon shortage on trans people.

“Men have taken over everything. They’re ‘women of the year’ in every category, in women’s categories. And the latest news is, there’s a shortage of tampons, and that’s probably because men are buying tampons,” Greene said on an episode of her podcast, “MTG Live.”

However, the Georgia lawmaker did not provide evidence for her groundless claim concerning tampon shortages in some parts of the country.

She, every time she opens her mouth, proves that you just ‘can’t fix stupid’.

Gun Debate Op-Ed #8

I believe that this will be the last of my re-posting of op-eds on the gun debate…..I was hoping that these would generate some interest in the debate and how it could be moved forward especially this year with all the shooting deaths that have made the news……but I was mistaken.

So to conclude this series I would like to post on the gun myths that seem to always pop up during times of conversation following mass shooting ( a never ending cycle)……..

Following gun violence tragedies, familiar myths get recycled and recirculated—myths that distract from effective solutions and create smoke screens around the essential problem: We’re more interested in protecting sellers and buyers of guns than in protecting the public, says Daniel Webster, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.

Below, read about some of the myths surrounding the issue of gun violence in America and what can be done to reduce it.

Myth: Urban homicides falsely inflate U.S. gun death statistics.

“The common trope is that places like Baltimore or Detroit or Chicago are the reason we have so many in this country,” said Cassandra Crifasi, the center’s director of research and policy, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “And yes, those places … have unacceptable rates of gun homicides. But the places with the highest rates of death are not Maryland, Michigan, and Illinois. They are Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, Missouri, and Alabama.”

The fact is, Crifasi says, the places with weak gun laws have higher rates of death.

“More people died from guns in Texas than Illinois, when suicide and accidental shootings are included,” she added.

Myth: Mass shootings like the ones in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, are the result of mental health issues.

While motives in the Uvalde massacre are still unknown, “increasingly, we are seeing people who are frustrated, angry, and hateful and using firearms take that out on a particular group,” Crifasi told MarketWatch.

But there’s a distinction between this and a diagnosable issue. It’s also dangerous and irresponsible to link gun violence and mental health, Crifasi warns. For one thing, are far more common than : More than 50% of people will be diagnosed with a or disorder at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fixating on motives and the mental health of those who perpetuate violence distracts from more actionable approaches to reducing gun violence, Crifasi said.

Not to worry my friend….there are more….

https://phys.org/news/2022-06-debunking-myths-gun-violence.html

Sadly this debate will never end….with lies, accusations and misinformation it is destined to keep any solution from every being really considered.

Maybe the next generation will find common ground for a true conversation…..

I will not hold my breath!

Saturday News

It’s that time again when I offer up the news that no one cares about……

local news first….

Yesterday it was 107….it is now mid-night and it is 95….and it is not even Summer yet.

A local school here on the Gulf Coast is raffling off an AR-15 in a fundraiser….

A booster group for a high school on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast is raising money for a band trip with what a school safety group calls a “highly inappropriate” raffle of guns and ammunition.

The fundraiser — called “30 guns in 30 days” — is holding daily drawings for shotguns, handguns, rifles, ammunition, a bow and even a flamethrower. The $100 tickets have sold out and will help send the West Harrison High School band to Orlando, Florida, according to the fundraiser’s Facebook page. Drawings began June 6.

“It’s a raffle put together by group of likeminded people to raise money for the band kids to compete in Bands of America,” she said.

The raffle is organized by the band’s booster club and is sponsored by High Caliber Guns, a gun shop in Long Beach.

Gun raffles are not new to Mississippi and are frequently used as fundraisers for various initiatives across the state. And they are legal. West Harrison High band booster raffle winners are required to pass a background check conducted by High Caliber Guns.

That is extremely poor taste….in light of the mass shootings that is plaguing this nation.

Now the more important stuff……

Has the water wars begun?

Since 1923, Nebraska and Colorado have shared the water of the South Platte River in harmony. Now both states are worried that the other is trying to get the jump on the river water, the Wall Street Journal reports, in a split that could end up in court. It began when Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts became nervous after learning of a host of projects—mostly for the Denver area—under consideration in Colorado that would siphon off water before it reaches the Colorado-Nebraska line. “Our estimate is that if they were to complete all of these, they would reduce the amount of water coming to Nebraska in the South Platte by 90%,” Ricketts said.

Ricketts responded by announcing a project of his own: 60 miles of canals and several reservoirs that would pull water from the South Platte a few miles upstream from Julesburg, Colorado, at a cost of $500 million. That’s permitted by the states’ 99-year-old compact, but it did not please Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who found out about the project from Ricketts only hours before the announcement and said he was stunned. He said the Colorado projects Ricketts fears have only been proposed by local governments and agencies; they haven’t been approved by the state. Polis called Nebraska’s perception a “misunderstanding of Colorado’s intentions.”

The result is “this really bizarre boondoggle of a project that wouldn’t benefit Nebraska or Colorado,” Polis said, per the Journal. Colorado will defend its water rights, the governor said, predicting that landowners and environmental groups also will take Nebraska to court over the canal project. People living in the potentially affected areas in both states are concerned about the effects of Nebraska’s canal plan, including whether more water would be drawn from Lake McConaughy, a reservoir on the North Platte River important to tourism. Anthony Schutz, who teaches water and environmental law at the University of Nebraska law school, said the states’ agreement permits Colorado to take as much water as it wants from that stretch of the South Platte anyway.

Remember all those cow farts?

First of all it is the ‘burps’ not the farts that supposedly cause the ‘problem’….now someone has addressed the ‘problem’….

New Zealand is looking into slapping a tax on one of the country’s main sources of greenhouse-gas emissions: The livestock that outnumber human New Zealanders by more than seven to one. Agriculture accounts for around half the country’s emissions, mainly methane produced by the burps of sheep and cows, the Washington Post reports. The country, home to around 5 million people, has 26 million sheep and 10 million cows. Agriculture previously wasn’t included in the country’s emissions-trading scheme. The governement says money collected under the plan will be used for research and other services for farmers.

The first-of-its-kind plan would go into effect in 2025, though there are still some details to work out and final approval isn’t expected until later this year at the earliest. Dairy farmer Andrew Hoggard, president of Federated Farmers of New Zealand, tells the BBC that he broadly approves of the plan. “We’ve been working with the government and other organizations on this for years to get an approach that won’t shut down farming in New Zealand, so we’ve signed off on a lot of stuff we’re happy with,” he says. “But you know, like all of these types of agreements with many parties involved, there’s always going to be a couple of dead rats you have to swallow.”

The plan includes incentives for farmers who plant trees on their land or use feed additives to reduce emissions, per Reuters. UC Davis scientist Ermias Kebreab has been studying the issue for decades and is among those developing diets that can reduce emissions from cattle. “If you tell me how much your animal is consuming, I can tell you pretty closely to the actual emissions using mathematical models,” he tells NPR. “Most of the gas is formed in their stomach, so in their guts, particularly in the first chamber. And so they belch it out.”

There has been some news for amputees….a robotic finger…..

ur goal is to develop robots that are truly human-like,” said Shoji Takeuchi to IFLScience, who recently created a robot finger with living skin made from human cells. A Project Professor who specializes in biohybrid systems at The University of Tokyo, Takeuchi and colleagues’ finger can bend and curl without breaking, and if it gets a boo-boo it can simply heal and reseal itself.

“The silicone rubber covers that are commonly used [in robotics] today may look real from a distance or in photos or videos, but when you actually get up close, you realize that it is artificial,” said Takeuchi. “We think that the only way to achieve an appearance that can be mistaken for a human being is to cover it with the same material as a human being, i.e., living cells.”

The living skin, published in the journal Matter, was created by dipping the robotic finger into a solution containing collagen and human dermal fibroblasts, which are the two key connective ingredients in our flesh-colored organ covers. As they combined around the robotic appendage, the collagen and fibroblasts began to tighten, creating a fit that Takeuchi believes to be the success of the hyper-realistic finger.

This is for all us meat eaters that are worried about the growing ‘plant based’ substitutes….

Marketing departments still haven’t decided what to call it yet, but there is increasing demand for cultivated (aka cultured, cell-grown, or no-kill) meat, at least in Singapore. That’s where US-based Good Meat has teamed up with food-processing behemoth ADM to build “the world’s largest bioreactors to produce cultivated meat,” according to the Guardian.Eventually, the facility is expected to produce 13,000 tons of cell-grown chicken and beef per year—a teeny sliver of global meat consumption but enough for a proper test run in the marketplace. Singapore is the only country where cultivated meat has regulatory approval, but the USDA and FDA are working on it.

Josh Tetrick, CEO of Eat Just, Good Meat’s parent company, says the bioreactors present “significant” engineering challenges and require major investment, but there’s also big potential to move society away from slaughtered meat. “I think our grandchildren are going to ask us about why we ate meat from slaughtered animals back in 2022,” Tetrick said, saying the product “will enable us to eat meat without all the harm, without bulldozing forests,” and without the enormous carbon and methane footprints produced by the traditional meat industry. Caroline Bushnell of the nonprofit Good Food Institute said it could be a “gamechanger in the race to bring meat grown from cells to restaurants, supermarkets, and dining tables.”

Another company, Upside Foods, recently raised $400 million to boost production with help from major companies like Tyson and Cargill. Per CNN, company founder Uma Valeti says these products are “real meat” and the process is “similar to brewing beer, but instead of growing yeast or microbes, we grow animal cells.” Scientists start by harvesting real animal cells through biopsy and then give them the nutrients they need to replicate naturally. As for the taste, Upside Foods COO Amy Chen says it was “simultaneously one of the most unremarkable things and one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever eaten. It’s just meat.”

To close a little history…..

I am sure than most people know of the Black Death which some say killed about half of Europe…..but for hundreds of years people have asked where did this killer originate….and now a possible answer….

Researchers say they’ve discovered “when and where the single most notorious and infamous killer of humans began.” They’re referring to the Black Death, or bubonic plague, which is thought to have wiped out tens of millions of people in Europe, Asia, and North Africa during what the Guardian calls “the deadliest pandemic in recorded history.” Now, 700 years later, researchers say they’ve discovered the likely source of the plague: a region of what’s now Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, which sat on the ancient Silk Road trade route.

Historian Phil Slavin’s suspicions were raised once he realized that 118 of 467 graves within two burial sites near Kyrgyzstan’s Lake Issyk-Kul, dating from 1248 to 1345, were from two years: 1338 and 1339, per the Guardian. Ten of these were marked with a word meaning “pestilence,” per Nature. Experts therefore set to work extracting DNA from skeletons that had previously been taken from the site to a museum in Russia, per CNN. They sequenced DNA for seven individuals, finding the genetic imprint of Yersinia pestis plague bacterium in three, all of whom died in 1338.

Researchers believe this reveals the source of the pandemic, as the single plague strain found in the skeletons’ teeth preceded what CNN describes as “an explosion in diversity of plague strains” sometime before the Black Death devastated Europe. “It is like finding the place where all the strains come together, like with coronavirus … [and] Wuhan,” researcher Johannes Krause, co-author of a study published Wednesday in Nature, tells the outlet. “We found not only the ancestor of the Black Death, but the ancestor of the majority of the plague strains that are circulating in the world today,” he adds, per the Guardian.

Those Russian Sanctions

Part of the tale is that the US and NATO needs to punish Putin for his actions…..part of this punishment is arming Ukraine and heavy, massive sanctions on Russia.

Then I wonder are all these sanctions actually punishing Russia….

As usual since I am an opinionated SOB I have made my thoughts known on sanctions…..

Sanctions And Tariffs

And these thoughts….

Is Sanctions The Answer?

That out of the way for I like to let my reader see just what I am saying on these issues….let us return to the thought …..are sanctions hurting Russia?

Sanctions against Russia are a blessing in disguise, according toAlexey Butrimov, the general director of BJet, a Russian aviation company. Although he readily admits that the new restrictions have created significant complications for businessmen such as himself, he is confident that in the long-term, they will provide Russia with the much-needed stimulus to revive its long-dormant aviation industry.

“On the one hand, we look at all the problems caused by sanctions with sadness, but we also understand deep down inside that we can finally resurrect our aviation,” he said. “When times are good, you don’t have much incentive to develop anything quickly. But now that we find ourselves in a situation where we don’t have anything, the only path forward is to build up our own aviation system.”

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision in late February to send troops into Ukraine, Russia has quickly surpassed longtime pariahs such as Iran, North Korea, and Syria to become the most sanctioned country in the world. Almost overnight, the U.S. and its allies in Europe and Asia moved to freeze nearly half of Russia’s financial reserves, severely restrict Russia’s access to their financial and technological systems, and ban Russian planes and ships from entering their airspace and ports. Simultaneously, hundreds of multinational corporations have either suspended or downsized their operations in Russia since the start of the conflict.
The Biden White House has vowed that as a result of these new sanctions, “Russia will very likely lose its status as a major economy, and it will continue a long descent into economic, financial, and technological isolation.” Meanwhile, on the political front, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CBS News in April that sanctions were meant “to make it harder for [Russia] to fuel their war machine,” and thereby overtime help “improve Ukraine’s position at the bargaining table and make an outcome of this war that Ukraine wants to see more likely.”

Are Sanctions Hurting Russia?

While the ‘news’ about sanctions would have us believe we are crippling Russia….I just do not see this as the solution to Ukraine…..why?

The US will keep shoving money up Ukraine’s butt even if the conflict ends today.

Someone is making out like a bandit without a gun…..and that is what all this lunacy is all about.

Gun Debate Op-Ed #7

The debate continues and as usual absolutely nothing is getting accomplished…semantics and bullsh*t seem to be the only thing all agree on.

While the debate rages with nothing more than accusations and lies….there are a few solutions that are popular and they work (according to this op-ed)……..

While there are many factors contributing to the scourge of gun violence in the United States, one thing is clear: The data—and the majority of Americans—support laws that sensibly restrict access to firearms under certain conditions.

“We have evidence-based solutions that exist right now that are supported by the majority of Americans from a range of backgrounds and experiences,” said Cassandra Crifasi, director of research and policy at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. “We have the tools, we have the support, and we need to act.”

Crifasi and four of her colleagues from the Center for Gun Violence Solutions discussed the policies that are proven to decrease while also receiving significant public support during a virtual briefing Thursday hosted by Johns Hopkins University. They discussed topics including proven methods for reducing gun violence in schools, the intricacies of extreme risk protection orders, and the various effects gun laws have on democratic participation.

But they were united in presenting the facts supported by their gun policy research—particularly the demonstrated effectiveness of proposed policies, and their support among Americans.

An article below is from Reader’s Digest……

The recent mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, killed 19 grade school students and two elementary school teachers—and devastated the entire country. In the wake of the violence, many Americans are looking for ways to help the victims and families and asking how to help with gun control to prevent school shootings in the future.

And they’re struggling with why it’s so hard to stop gun violence in America, especially when most of the country is in favor of strengthening gun laws. A recent Morning Consult/Politico poll found that the majority of Americans support laws that require background checks for all gun sales, set age minimums for gun purchases, and ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. Overall, 65 percent of Americans support stricter gun laws.

The tragedy has prompted people to examine how other countries respond to mass shootings, debate what the right to bear arms means in the context of the Second Amendment, and question what it would take to amend the Constitution. But those are large-scale changes. Fortunately, there’s a lot individuals can do to reduce the chances of another mass shooting, whether in a school or in another public area, like the recent supermarket shooting in Buffalo, New York. If you’re interested in how to help with gun control, keep reading for ways to take action.
