Closing Thought–08Jul21

One of the big ideas for trying to control all the gun violence in the US is the use of background checks when buying that gun……

And how is that working out?

America’s gun background check system, designed to keep weapons out of the hands of people who might use them in crimes, has struggled to keep up with record firearms sales over the past yeareven as violent crime has risen dramatically in many U.S. cities.

In recent years, the FBI — which manages the system that vets gun buyers — processed an average of 8.6 million gun background checks annually, according to historical data analyzed by FiveThirtyEight.1 But last year, the bureau processed 12,761,328 background checks, according to FBI data obtained by FiveThirtyEight through a public records request.

Perhaps most alarming, the FBI never finished over 316,000 background checks in the first nine months of 2020 alone — far more than in any other year on record. And that number doesn’t include October, November and December — usually the busiest months for gun sales, when 3.4 million background checks were opened last year.

In other words, it’s impossible to know how many guns were sold to people in 2020 who couldn’t legally own them because those background checks were never completed.

More People Are Buying Guns. Fewer People Are Getting Background Checks.

Glad to see the big idea to help control our rampaging gun violence is working so we….I feel so much safer knowing this (of course that is sarcasm….it is another failed attempt to stop the violence)

How does that help the situation?

Is American Democracy A Mirage?

I have as well as others have been concerned about the rhetoric and later the actions of some politicians to curb the democratic process in this country.

For me this disturbing trend began with the demonization of minorities by Reagan in 1980….and slowly it became the agenda for the Right…..then in 2010 the obstructionism came into the chambers of Congress….and as they say that brings us to today……

For instance…he GOP is attacking the way that votes are counted as well as the access to voting…..

The GOP are not a political party as we have known such for most of our history. They are closer to a camp of oligarchic terrorists, employing techniques used by Fascists and other authoritarian regimes, and excoriated in 1984, to attempt a slow-moving coup, , whose aim is the destruction of voting rights, constitutional democracy, and the creation of a one-party state.

https://goodmenproject.com/ethics-values/the-gop-are-not-just-trying-to-suppress-the-vote-they-are-trying-to-control-the-count-kpkn/

But has this really come to fruition?

Is American democracy just a mirage?

It is no longer an unknown fact or a view propounded by a handful of radical historians and political scientists: the American political system has such severe structural flaws that it is potentially antithetical to democracy and surely detrimental to the promotion of the common good.

Consider the following stark realizations about the condition of American democracy as evidence of the changing times:

The United States has been rated for a number of consecutive years by the Economist Intelligence Union as a “flawed democracy.”

Scores of highly respected mainstream scholars have analyzed massive amounts of data showing that public opinion counts very little in US policymaking (see, for example, Larry Bartels, Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age; Princeton University Press, 2nd ed., 2016) to conclude that the American political system works essentially in a manner that actually subverts the will of the common people.

Others, like Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, have argued that, because of rules set in the political system, the American economy is rigged to favor the rich, a view that is obviously wholeheartedly endorsed by Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow from Asia Research Institute, at the National University of Singapore, when he declares that the US functions like a democracy but is actually a plutocracy.

The American democratic process is being assaulted on all sides by the states….and make no mistake it is an assault.

If we pretend that the balance will return as well as the democratic process is nothing more than a pipe dream…..the people need to take back the process.

If we do not fight back then our very nation is in jeopardy…..

There is an Orwellian thought that I like….“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

Or maybe it should be this…..

“The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.”

So is American democracy just a mirage?

I will let this GOP slug answer that question….

Newly leaked video footage of a recent event hosted by the right-wing group Patriot Voices shows Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas openly admitting that his party wants “18 more months of chaos and the inability to get stuff done” as President Joe Biden, a bipartisan group of senators, and congressional Democrats work to pass climate and infrastructure legislation.

“Honestly, right now, for the next 18 months, our job is to do everything we can to slow all of that down to get to December of 2022,” Roy says in the clip, referring to the month after that year’s midterm elections. Republicans need to flip just a handful of seats to take back the House and Senate.

“I don’t vote for anything in the House of Representatives right now,” Roy says in response to an audience member’s question about the sweeping infrastructure and safety-net package that Democrats are planning to pass unilaterally alongside a White House-backed bipartisan deal.

I weep for my country…..the ignorance and stupidity prevails and we lose all hope of a freedom to do our desires.

That Global Minimum Tax

Biden’s Sec Treasury recently proposed a policy that I can get on-board with (there are some few that I can support)…….

Now it appears that more and more countries are signing on to this policy…..
Some 130 countries have backed a global minimum tax as part of a worldwide effort to keep multinational firms from dodging taxes by shifting their profits to countries with low rates. The agreement announced Thursday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development also provides for taxing the largest global companies in countries where they earn profits through online businesses but may have no physical presence. The agreement followed a proposal from President Biden for at least a 15% rate, an initiative that propelled the talks toward meeting a deadline for a deal by the middle of this year. The deal now will be discussed by the Group of 20 countries at meetings later this year, the AP reports, in hopes of finishing the details in October and implementing the agreement in 2023.

Under the deal, countries could tax their companies’ foreign earnings if they go untaxed through subsidiaries in other countries. That would remove the incentive to use accounting and legal schemes to shift profits to low-rate countries, since the profits would be taxed at home anyway. Not all of the 139 countries that joined the talks signed on to the deal. The proposal to tax countries where they have sales but no physical presence, which would require countries to sign up for a multilateral convention, excluded extractive companies such as oil and mining and regulated banks. The deal now faces more technical work and review by the Group of 20 countries. In the US, Biden has proposed a 21% minimum rate on overseas earnings of big US companies to deter them from shifting profits to tax havens. Biden’s US tax would need to be approved by Congress.
Like I said….I believe this is a much needed tax policy….

We will see just how effective it truly is or is this just a tactic to quell some larger issues.
