What Of World War One?

I am trying to help Americans understand World War One….a war that most Americans know very little about….This has been the 100 year anniversary of this devastating war.

This post will introduce Americans to ten things about the war that they are probably unaware of…..1o things….

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I, one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. To mark it, RCH has been doing a series of articles highlighting various aspects of the Great War.

For this week, here are 10 things you didn’t know about World War I. Behold:

World War One has billed as the war to end all wars…..it was also one of the most deadly of wars.  About 30 million dead and wounded on both sides…these are military figures….a total of about 8 million civilian causalities…..

  1. I am pleased to report that our TV stations are still full of WW1-related programming. Building up to the November Armistice, I have no doubt there will be a lot more. Just this week, we had the film ‘Testament of Youth’ on the BBC. I can recommend it, a true story.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I thing one of the reasons that most Americans don’t know too much about the first world war is because it is so remote in time now as to have lost all its immediate significance. Same thing with the 100 years war and others. I imagine that in time even the iconic American Civil War will be in the same genre …. all but forgotten. I think it is getting close now except in some southern climes that are still more or less psychologically fighting it.

    1. The Civil War will go on as long as there are bumper stickers “Like the South will rise again”…..WW! w-ill never be popular here for we cannot claim we won that one…..chuq
