The Terrifying Underbelly

For years pundits have been trying to explain the habits, voting and others, of the rural Southern voter…..I live among these people and I really cannot explain their habits…but I have read something that may clear it up just a bit…..

I have tried to understand how these voters can vote against their own interests…..time and time again……

As the election of Donald Trump is being sorted out, a common theme keeps cropping up from all sides: “Democrats failed to understand white, working-class, fly-over America.”

Trump supporters are saying this. Progressive pundits are saying this. Talking heads across all forms of the media are saying this. Even some Democratic leaders are saying this. It doesn’t matter how many people say it, it is complete BS. It is an intellectual/linguistic sleight of hand meant to draw attention away from the real problem. The real problem isn’t East Coast elites who don’t understand or care about rural America. The real problem is that rural Americans don’t understand the causes of their own situations and fears and they have shown no interest in finding out. They don’t want to know why they feel the way they do or why they are struggling because they don’t want to admit it is in large part because of the choices they’ve made and the horrible things they’ve allowed themselves to believe.

Did this help?

  1. Fear of the unknown has long made people tolerate poor conditions as the supposedly ‘best option’. Keep them ignorant of the facts, and fill their heads with nonsense propaganda, and it will continue indefinitely.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Now THAT made some sense, chuq (not to suggest the other things you post do not, mind you 🙂 but I have posted in the past on a quest for the reasons this Trump base became his base when it defies logic that anyone should support him. I might use this link in a post as well. Good one.

  3. Bill Maher brought this up a few months ago, calling it town mouse vs. country mouse, when it was the Dem leadership and Dump talking “amiably for once.” Dump could speak with Dem leaders for a little bit because they were town mice, so to speak. It’s a big cultural and class divide that hasn’t been bridged yet…and the fear’s there because more people live in urban areas than rural now, and that wasn’t the way of things decades ago. Country is losing its power–and population–and not liking it.

    1. The Country (Both big & small “C”) has been sliding downward so long, it’s now on it’s last legs. It’s essentially at The 6th Sense “I see dead people and most of them don’t even know they’re dead” level.

But unlike city mice, country mice are far more likely to know they’re dead men walking. As such, they’re desperate to cling to anything, anything at all, no matter how stupid or self-defeating…just to have something to get by on. It’s ZERO coincidence that the Big Pharma drug dealers intentionally targeted them for their new, highly addicted, products (Oxy) and not East Coast elites in a better position to afford them. They’ve just got more pain to kill.

The future is bleak for virtually everyone. There are just some who can kid themselves better than others. All mice have to “suck the pipe” sooner or later.

      1. And I’m currently watching the TV series Electric Dreams, based on Phillip K Dick’s short stories. “Wowza!”, as well! Fascinating man with a fascinating (and depressingly often accurate) view of his future (aka our modern day/near future)

      2. I agree he was fabulous writer Bladerunner, Total Recall….I have not seen the show yet but it is on my list…..thanx for the review….chuq

  4. I’ve finished the article. Sadly, it’s also an example of Coastal Elites just not getting it. While the author is so right about virtually ALL the details, the conclusion is still wrong. More importantly, it provides absolutely NOTHING that will help Democrats. That is to say, “Not our fault. They’re just hopeless. Let’s continue the passive, demographic, game that has still yet to pay off like it should.”

The real problem ACTUALLY IS that Democratic Coastal Elites don’t get that they’ve failed them -and everyone not a Coastal Elite- for decades. Democrats used to rule the South and the groups the article describes. Their politicians betrayed them. Ditching Segregation WAS a good idea. But they ultimately ditched its believers. So, surprise, surprise, when they ditch the Democrats.

But probably more importantly, they ditched them (and all non-elites) economically too! More recently, the Democrats bought into a Republican-light economic model; Free Trade, globalism and Tech-fairies that fart-out decent paying jobs. This is a mix of economic policies that have only worked out for the Elites, Left & Right. The further you are from being “with the program”, both social & economic, the less time they have for you.

So as long as the rural poor remain poor & in decline, they will remain Republican. Especially since the Republicans keep throwing them “values” bones. (Something the Democrats have also copied for non-elite lefties.) If useless activities like “feeding a nation” were economically valued, the rural poor would be doing okay and that animosity toward Elites, Democrats and even immigrants wouldn’t dominate they way it does. This is a case of winners calling losers “sore losers” and not understanding why “They just don’t like us.”

We deride them as poor & uneducated because they’re both. Sure, maybe they hold some responsibility in their disdain for higher education and elitist thinking. However, the poor & uneducated (rural or urban) have a natural tendency to resent wealthier and more educated. Human nature.

So if you’re poor, rural, white….Who you gonna side with? Are you siding with the condescending, sanctimonious Elites safe up there in their glass-ivory towers that tell you that both your jobs and your belief systems are wrong, “outdated” and not worth lifting a finger to save. Or, are you siding with the party that works against your interests harder than the Elites’ party does, but tells you “You’re fine the way you are and we’re on your side”? The math is more simple than a solid, red, swath in rural America.

Let’s remember to put the blame where it belongs.

    1. Not bad you should be a Dem pundit and strategist….Clinton is when the party sold their soul to be the wealthy elites and they never looked back….chuq

      1. I should be a Democratic strategist? Hey, what I’d ever do to deserve that kind of insult? (He-he!)

Although, they should kill to have me. I called EXACTLY what would happen at the time, even the time frame & social consequences (ie rise in pain-killing drugs) were close. I even predicted a rise in anti-Mexican sentiment, not as predominant a political issue as it panned out, but still.

But yeah, those kind of Democrats haven’t looked back. Well, except to look down their noses at all the folks “not with the program” whom they’ve left in the dust…and to criticize for not eagerly supporting them in their desire to do more of it.

  5. Hey, chuq.. do you allow cursory vulgarity on your blog? I really need a place to vent. Gawd this awful schmuck in the Oval Office is a total inexperienced loon! I woke to his crap being spewed to his mindless and clueless followers screaming their praise on his every sentence… at this CPAC thing., which is just another of his drug-of-choice to bolster him until the next Mueller indictments.
Ugh! I am so incensed that he’s dragging this country down. Mo***r F***k*** C***er.. damn I am so pissed. If I had a cat I’d kick it just because.

    1. You may say whatever you like….I understand….CPAC use to be true conservatives plning their way forward…now it is just Trump supporters showing their ignorance and the bigotry….chuq

    2. Unless swearing is specifically forbidden (See: all the Puritan blogs featuring stories on witchcraft, leeches and shoe buckles) this is the Internet…swearing is almost mandatory. Anybody who doesn’t want it on their website better have that stated clearly in a Posting Rules/About This Website section.

      1. Well, it gets kinda old grabbing the old Savage ten shot magazine fed .22LR (of which I only have one bullet laying around here from my old days.. kinda a Barney Fife thing) passed down from the family since 1936 (original receipt inside the buttstock).. and dry firing it at the TV. I oft will quote, “Yippee ky aaa motherfucker.”
Well, Ok.. no.. I don’t really go to all that effort (with the gun part)…. (don’t worry Secret Service key word searchers).

  6. I suppose I could vent over on one of Pete’s blogs but he has “nice” people over there.. creative in many ways.. and cultural. When I post over there I feel I need to dress up in a black robe and wear a white wig. 🙂
