The Malcolm X Letter

We are celebrating Black History Month….that time when we all should be focusing on the contributions made to the American society by our African-American citizens.

Malcolm X had a letter, hand written letter, just before his death about a cure for racism…….it was written while on Hajj…..

Mecca, Saudi Arabia – April 26th, 1964

I have just completed my pilgrimage (Hajj) here to the Holy City of Mecca, the hollyiest City on earth, which is absolutely forbidden for non-Muslims to even rest their eyes upon. This pilgrimage is the most important event in the life of all Muslims, and there are over 226,000 who are here right now from outside of Arabia. From Turkey came the largest contagion, around 50,000 in over 600 buses. This refutes Westerner propaganda that Turkey is turning away from Islam.

I know of only 2 others who have made the actual Hajj to Mecca from America, and both of them are West Indians who also converts to Islam. Mr. Elijah Muhammad, 2 of his sons, and a couple of his followers visited Mecca outside the Hajj season, and their visit is known as the “Omra”, or Lesser Pilgrimage. It is con-

This newly discovered letter is fascinating to read….most people do not realize that Malcolm after his hajj became more content in his own skin and became a orthodox Muslim as opposed to the Nation of Islam…..could this have lead to his assassination?

Personal opinion….yes it did!

  1. On an intellectual level, this stands as a testament to the power of a mind mostly free of coercion or influence, which, as Ralph Waldo pointed out, made Malcolm a self-reliant man. However, I am also compelled to point out one error of both logic, and intuition, one common to almost all humans, to wit: We are the creation of an all-powerful being, who has the unfortunate need to be worshiped and obeyed as our ‘only’ source of spiritual salvation. (Funny how that word, ‘only’, keeps popping up today…)

I never understood this; what is it about people that makes them think they are not ‘okay’, even ‘perfect’, just as they are, without assuming the blame/responsibility belongs to something, or someone other than ourselves? At four years old, this puzzled me, for I saw nothing in the world of which to be afraid; if one LOOKED, LISTENED, and LEARNED, the world is a wonderful place. I never saw any reason to assume ‘creation’ by anything; reality, as it is, and was, suited me just fine the way it was in my perception…

But, the rest of my species seems to be more afraid of reality than is wise, or logical, so I have learned to accept that ‘flaw’ (grin) without laying any claim to it myself….

i just don’t get this whole ‘faith in god’ idea; it never has, and never will make sense to me. The world the way it exists is just fine with me; nothing further is required for me to be happy, or competent, or to exhibit love for others… All that is already inside all of us, if only we could open our eyes to see it….

The other side of the coin, belief by ‘ipse dixit’ logic, is a sure path to hierarchal thinking, and only divides people from each other.
