We Americans live and breath for winners and losers….winners we worship and losers we hate…..so how does the 2016 Dem convention stack up for the winners and the losers?
There was no shortage of drama on Day 1 of the Democratic National Convention, though the day appeared to end with a more unified party, with Michelle Obama delivering what could be the convention’s best speech and Bernie Sanders telling the Philadelphia crowd that Hillary Clinton “must become the next president.” Here’s who analysts say had a good day, or a terrible day.
Among the winners:
- Michelle Obama. She didn’t just give a great speech, she gave the “best speech of Hillary Clinton’s career,” according to Glenn Thrush at Politico. She “delivered a more passionate and concise case for Clinton than the candidate has ever made for herself—and perhaps the single most effective political address delivered in 2016,” he writes
- Bernie Sanders. Some 14 months after he launched his campaign from the “outskirts of American politics,” Sanders received a “hero’s welcome” from an emotional crowd Monday night, writes Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post. His speech was was, “essentially, a confirmation that he was right about almost everything and Clinton now understood that fact,” Cillizza writes.
- Sarah Silverman. Her off-the-cuff line to hecklers—”To the Bernie-or-bust people, you’re being ridiculous”—got one of the night’s biggest cheers. It came after what the Guardian calls “one of the speeches of the night, with a thoughtful exposition of the argument for switching from Sanders to Clinton.”
Among the losers:
- Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The soon-to-be former Democratic National Committee chief had a terrible day by anybody’s reckoning. She decided against opening the convention after she was heavily booed and heckled when speaking to Florida delegates Monday morning.
- Cory Booker. The New Jersey senator tried a little too hard to launch himself on the national stage with his Monday night speech, which “felt too rehearsed, too plotted—and, without question, way, way too long,” according to Cillizza at the Post. “The speech could have been half as long and twice as good.”
- The Trans-Pacific Partnership. The rhetoric against the trade deal from speakers including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders was almost indistinguishable from what Donald Trump has to say about it, despite the fact that it was negotiated by the sitting Democratic president notes Dylan Matthews at Vox. He predicts that the deal will now die under either Clinton or Trump “if Obama can’t push it through in the lame-duck session.
On to day two and the “Gong Show” continues…..
Other “Losers” include the idiots who allowed the DNC to open without a single American Flag anywhere in the convention hall.
I guess most people on my street are losers since there are few flags…they must have done something right if that is the worse thing one can find…
Those who live on your street? What has that got to do with those at the convention?
Flags, John…you seem to imply that “losers” do not display the flag…
Losers probably don’t even know what a flag looks like unless they are ready to burn one or something.
Most people display the flag improperly….which is unpatriotic on a higher level…..if it is that important then do it right….is my thinking.
Off topic a little bit but accurate … very accurate. Yes, display it and do it right but do display it by all means! A coat worn wrongside out will still keep the chill winds at bay and wearing it is a damned site more reasonable than going bare chested in a gale.
True but it is almost a law when it comes to the flag…not so much on my parka…
Two short observations on this one…
One: Very few Americans know the law regarding flag use or display. Hell, the junior Shrub was known for signing flags people gave him, which is a clear violation of the protocol. The flag, if one is to be correct in its usage, is never to be used in a commercial way, and writing on it would get him shot on a military base. All those clothes you see with flags all over them are illegal, according to the US Flag Code. (You can find those regulations here: http://www.military.com/flag-day/us-flag-code.html )
Second: the victims of all of this are all in the audience, and the streets of this country (which includes all the deluded ‘patriots’ who believe in “my country, right or wrong”, whether they live in a cardboard box, or a three bedroom townhouse.). All the idiots you see on that convention floor are deluded fools, who have bought into the American myth so deeply, they think they are actually winning.
Hmph… not sure I can keep holding my tongue with two more days of this to get through; I might just have to say what I really think….
gigoid, the dubious
You know I never once noticed the flag thingy….I am more worried about the lack of principles than the lack of some cloth….chuq
The flag is merely a symbol; it isn’t the country itself, but, most people are content to NOT think about it at all, even enough to FIND OUT what the actual rules are…
I am not a blind patriot; I loved, and still do love, the ideas upon which the country was founded, and still ostensibly follows, with the Constitution as the primary source of law. Also, as one raised in the Army by a ‘mindful’ soldier, correct protocol is basic, when it comes to the flag.
What mosts people don’t understand is, if you believe in the ideas for which the flag stands, then you MUST also acknowledge the right of anyone to express their own opinions, even to the point of burning the flag. As some scriptwriter had the President say in the movie, The American President, “then you can call yourself the Land of the Free.” That’s respect for the flag, and a point few actually can grasp.
It’s also how you can tell how perverted people’s minds have become, when such a simple, basic concept about liberty is so badly misunderstood, perverted by religious and corporately influenced advertising and propaganda. I can think of few people any more I can consider true Americans, for they are not willing to give freedom to anyone who is not one, in their eyes only. Nor are they willing to educate themselves, about anything, trusting in TV and church to tell them what to think.

Cannot argue with truth…chuq
