Spies Like Us

Another Saturday and another weekend begins…..

In my youth I was a big fan of spy fiction….Ian Fleming’s James Bond and a pulp fiction series about a CIA spy Sam Durell…..I have always liked spy thrillers….I enjoy the series The Americans, it is about spies in the 70’s in the US……

So back about a decade ago when that Russian was poisoned in London renewed my interests in the spy game…..and there was the Russian spies found here in the US especially the extremely nice looking red head……

And then I read another story and once again the whole spy then became all too important……

Russia-watchers—or readers of spy novels—may be unsurprised to learn that the sudden death of a former Vladimir Putin aide in a Washington, DC, hotel last fall now appears a little fishy. Mikhail Lesin, the former Kremlin press minister who helped set up Russia Today and spent more than a year as chief of the powerful Gazprom-Media group, was found dead in the Dupont Circle Hotel in November. Russian media reported at the time that the 57-year-old heavy smoker and drinker had died from a heart attack, but the DC medical examiner’s office announced on Thursday that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, the Guardian reports.

Police haven’t said whether they suspect a crime was committed, though it’s not clear what else would explain the blunt force injuries to the Russian’s head, neck, torso, arms, and legs. Moscow says it’s seeking “clarification from Washington and relevant official data on the progress of the investigation,” reports the BBC, which notes that some US lawmakers had been calling for an investigation into Lesin and the vast fortune he amassed while working as a civil servant in Russia, including $28 million in Los Angeles real estate.

Was this an assassination?  Maybe the Russian mob is behind it……maybe he forgot who he owed his loyalties to for favors of the past…..

Any ideas?

  1. I am aware of this and tried to find out more information…..none to be had.
Rather like the English spy who was found asphyxiated in a hold all in a London flat…..
Rather like the death of David Christopher Kelly, who was a British scientist and authority on biological warfare, employed by the British Ministry of Defence, and formerly a United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq.
No one will ever learn the truth until many years down the line…..when it don’t matter!
    Love a good spy tale….grin
    Get’s me blood going…
    😉

  2. If a person has an appendix burst or a cerebral hemmorage then the reflexes of the body can go on violent automatic and cause the individual to involuntarily bounce off furniture and floors very forcefully and this could have caused symtoms that look like blunt force trauma. Who knows? People will always look for the “Sensational” in anything newsworthy won’t they?

    1. I usually would give of damn put this the second or third person close to Putin to have died mysteriously….that is not a coincidence.

  3. Sun Tzu opined the spy as the most powerful warrior of all, for good reason. I’d say, if one dies, not in his own bed at home, there is probably more to the story than is being told…. That said, I do have it on good authority (my brother’s wife’s cousin’s sister-in-law lives in NY, and is connected to all the gossip, as she works at one of the police precincts…) he was actually killed by being beaten to death with his own Iphone by his wife’s lover, as he interrupted them at play….

    gigoid, the dubious

      1. Definitely an example of “stupid is as stupid does”, I’d say….The degree to which humans will go to prove just how stupid they can be for a principle has always amazed me; this is like watching lemmings go over a cliff.

        gigoid

  4. The thing about spies is that they’re job is to be ultra-secretive, lying, duplicitous sacks of shit who will do anything to advance their nation’s ultra-secretive agenda based on lies & duplicity. Not only that, spies are routinely “compromised”, or are willing to sell out to the highest bidder. The whole industry is a clusterfuck of distrust.

So who knows what happened to this guy? Was he killed by American forces? Was he killed by the KGB, or The Mob? Or did some pimp crack open his skull because he refused to pay for his boy-toy? Was he funnelling info to the US? Was he a double agent? Or did one side just think he was? Maybe the FBI/CIA faked his death so they could keep him in a Blacksite. Shit, Putin may have even decided to off his old Press Minister in America, just so he can have a “counter narrative” to the Alexander Litvinenko story.

In the completely unaccountable world of “National Security”, literally ANYTHING goes. The one thing you can absolutely count on is that we’ll never be allowed to know even 5% of the truth.

      1. That’s ONLY in fiction! From a distance spies look great. Heroic. Glamorous. Smart. Sexy. But so does gambling. And with both, the reality is much closer to the opposite. They both leave a trail of destruction in their wake.

The reality is that spies lie, deceive, spread propaganda, invade people’s privacy, ruin and end lives. They compromise the integrity of…everybody & everything they come in contact with. Ironically, they help create the very distrust & secrecy they’re hired to break through. Ultimately, the mentality that “justifies” them is the true enemy of democracy, human rights and peaceful coexistence.

(Did you catch that Mr CSIS/NSA agent? Of course you did. One-way ticket to Gitmo, coming right up!)

What can I say, my dad was born in Nazi Germany, and grew up in Stasiland (aka East Germany). So I’ve absorbed all the stories. Good times. Good times. 🙂

That said, I REALLY dig this show…and not just because Kerri Russell gets 90% naked every other episode.

But, as realistic & historically accurate as it is, it’s still fiction.

      2. Military Intelligence? That would make you one of those “oxymorons”, wouldn’t it?

So, where are the bodies buried? Or, are you still loyal to the cause? Maybe you’re just trying to entrap some Lefties? 😉 (You can never trust a spy.)
