Those “Security Contractors”!

I have written about the mercenaries….sorry I mean security contractors……they hate being labelled as mercenaries…they say they do not fight for  money….then I ask why did you leave the service if not for more money?

Anyway these “contractors” have just inked a new contract….

The first batch of mercenaries from the private US military firm DynCorp has arrived in the Yemeni city of Aden to replace paid militants from another American company.

Under a USD-3-billion contract between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and DynCorp, mercenaries from the company are to be deployed to Yemen, where UAE forces are fighting against the Houthi rebels on Saudi orders, Khabar News Agency quoted an official with Yemeni Defense Ministry as saying.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the first group of the mercenaries recently arrived in the port city of Aden to replace those of Blackwater, a notorious American group now renamed Academi.

He added that the new militants included special naval forces, who entered the port of Ras Omran southwest of Aden.

DynCorp is a rival of Blackwater, which hires mercenaries and sends them to fight in foreign countries on paid missions.

Blackwater had decided to withdraw from Bab-el-Mandeb region after the Yemeni forces inflicted heavy losses on them. The UAE was forced to bring in the new mercenaries from DynCorp for the same reason.

Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. At least 8,400 people have been killed so far in the aggression and 16,015 others sustained injuries. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.

Deployed to fight for the UAE in Yemen…..that means they will be fighting for a foreign government, right?

I feel about this as I feel about people with dual citizenship…..

In 1936-7 my grandfather fought in the Spanish Civil War and upon his return he was arrested for fighting for a foreign government…..what is the difference here?

Apparently if you call yourself a “security contractor” you may break the laws of this country…..is that about it?

Just like the fools that also have Israeli citizenship and fight in the IDF….that should be illegal…if they cannot fight for their country then they should be jailed….or if a foreign government pays you to be their army then you should be arrested….or maybe admit you are a f*cking mercenary and are in it for the big bucks you get for fighting for a foreign government….

I have NO use for these people….I think even less of them than of the so-called militias that pretend they are fighting for my rights…..

At least my grandfather fought for a principle and not for money…that makes him a better man than these toads.

PERIOD!

Your Money Is Pissed Away….Again

I try to write about every story I see about the government pissing the taxpayers money away on crap that is either unnecessary or unwanted…..I have written about the F-35 which is a death trap for pilots, about a gas station in Afghanistan that cost millions and so on……of course you have heard about the $600 toilet seat or the $70 hammer…..(a couple famous expenditures)……

And yes I have found another waste of taxpayers money…….

Its name was the Human Terrain System, what USA Today labels a “controversial battlefield anthropology program” supposedly shut down by the US Army in 2014 after allegations of racism, sexual harassment, and funny business with time sheets, among other issues. Or so its demise was believed: The initiative—which embedded social scientists with combat units to help them avoid pointless battles and boost local aid efforts, and which cost $725 million since 2007—was apparently never shut down at all, yet the Army seemed content to let it appear as if it were, according to Army files and an anonymous DoD official. One person outraged about this development: California Rep. Duncan Hunter, a member of the Armed Services Committee who calls the revelation “absolutely astonishing.” “Even if … the program was never killed, the Army was happy with members of Congress and the scientific community thinking and believing it was killed,” he says. “The Army is evidently OK with taking people for fools.”

Other issues the program was plagued by: commanders who didn’t take scientist recommendations seriously and a condemnation from the American Anthropological Association. In 2015, the Army said the program had been shut down the previous year, noting there “was no longer a requirement for HTS teams in theater.” But a look at Army documents by USA Today found the focus of the program had simply changed from experts in the field to those based at Kansas’ Fort Leavenworth, and it rebranded itself the Global Cultural Knowledge Network. Plus there’s a paper trail showing Leavenworth officials wanted critics (including Hunter) to think the program had been killed, including a memo with instructions on how to handle “Evil People Questions” about the program. The “reborn” initiative now runs on a $1.2 million yearly budget and employs nine—and as a “program of record,” it could be funded for many more years. Read the full investigation here.

$725 million…….and yet they bitch about the deficit…..this is why there is NO progress made in this country……much needed money is spent on wasteful programs that benefit NO one……

I love it when some politician claims that it is “astonishing” at the waste….knowing that it is a continuous thing in DC…..maybe they should be less “astonished” and more vigilant…..

I wish Americans would be as concerned about the government throwing the money away instead of those poor people of welfare……I guess a corporate thief is not as important as a brown skin one…..

Just a thought.

Let the weekend begin……be safe and have some fun……

Good News From The Syrian Ceasefire

Last week a ceasefire was implemented by most parties in the fighting in Syria…..that alone would be good news but it does not stop there…..

During the brittle ceasefire, protesters have returned to Syria’s streets to assert that the revolution continues……that’s right protests have return to the streets of many Syrian cities…….

This all began back in 2011……

Pro-democracy protests erupted in March 2011 in the southern city of Deraa after the arrest and torture of some teenagers who painted revolutionary slogans on a school wall. After security forces opened fire on demonstrators, killing several, more took to the streets.

The unrest triggered nationwide protests demanding President Assad’s resignation. The government’s use of force to crush the dissent merely hardened the protesters’ resolve. By July 2011, hundreds of thousands were taking to the streets across the country.

Opposition supporters eventually began to take up arms, first to defend themselves and later to expel security forces from their local areas.

Once the shots were fired then the country sank into the cycle never ending violence…..

Why would I take my reader on this trip back in recent history?

It seems the ceasefire has brought out those demonstrators that are looking for peace and democracy……

As soon as the cease-fire between President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the opposition went into effect Feb. 27, protesters returned to Syria’s streets, bringing to mind the first protests staged five years ago calling for freedom and the overthrow of the government. In March 2011, the southern city of Daraa became the spark that lit the flame of the revolution. Soon after, protests spread to most of the country’s cities, from the coast all the way to Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and al-Jazeera.

If the ceasefire can hold then the possibility of a real change can happen in Syria….just the lack of all out violence is a positive change…..but if it can hold then there is a chance for some true substantial change to occur….

This is a small positive situation in a sea of negativity….

It is not a surprise to me of what can happen with a little help from rational minds….I am not saying that this will lead to a peaceful transition to democracy or some form of democracy but it is a positive step…..

Biafra: The Future Of Days Past

Back in the late 1960’s when I served in the US Army with the 9th Infantry Division I use to further my studies by pouring through papers when there was a break in the action looking for stories that were not what many would call “major” stories….back in those days was the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was the headlines…..but buried deep in an English newspaper that I had got from some Aussie friends I found the story of a tiny break away republic of Biafra….

In case you are not old enough to recall this conflict….I will let Britannica explain it……..

Biafra, secessionist western African state that unilaterally declared its independence from Nigeria in May 1967. It constituted the former Eastern Region of Nigeria and was inhabited principally by Igbo (Ibo) people. Biafra ceased to exist as an independent state in January 1970.
In the mid-1960s economic and political instability and ethnic friction characterized Nigerian public life. In the mostly Hausa north, resentment against the more prosperous, educated Igbo minority erupted into violence. In September 1966, some 10,000 to 30,000 Igbo people were massacred in the Northern Region, and perhaps 1,000,000 fled as refugees to the Igbo-dominated east. Non-Igbos were then expelled from the Eastern Region.

Attempts by representatives of all regions to come to an agreement were unsuccessful. On May 30, 1967, the head of the Eastern Region, Lieutenant Colonel (later General) Odumegwu Ojukwu, with the authorization of a consultative assembly, declared the region a sovereign and independent republic under the name of Biafra. General Yakubu Gowon, the leader of the federal government, refused to recognize Biafra’s secession. In the hostilities that broke out the following July, Biafran troops were at first successful, but soon the numerically superior federal forces began to press Biafra’s boundaries inward from the south, west, and north. Biafra shrank to one-tenth its original area in the course of the war. By 1968 it had lost its seaports and become landlocked; supplies could be brought in only by air. Starvation and disease followed; estimates of mortality during the war generally range from 500,000 to 3,000,000.

The Organization of African Unity, the papacy, and others tried to reconcile the combatants. Most countries continued to recognize Gowon’s regime as the government of all Nigeria, and the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union supplied it with arms. On the other hand, international sympathy for the plight of starving Biafran children brought airlifts of food and medicine from many countries. Côte d’Ivoire,Gabon, Tanzania, and Zambia recognized Biafra as an independent state, and France sent Biafra weapons.

Biafran forces were finally routed in a series of engagements in late December 1969 and early January 1970. Ojukwu fled to Côte d’Ivoire, and the remaining Biafran officers surrendered to the federal government on January 15, 1970. Biafra, on the point of total collapse, thereupon ceased to exist.

(encyclopedia Britannica)
Why would this be interesting today?  It appears that the secessionist thought did not end in 1970…..the idea of a separate republic of Biafra is as alive today as it was then……Why would there be any interests in this situation?

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has warned his country will “not tolerate” another independent Biafra. The leader, who took office in May 2015, told Al Jazeera while on an official visit to Qatar his administration will not engage in a dialogue with pro-Biafran activists.

Pro-Biafrans call for the independence of the Biafran territories forcibly annexed to Nigeria during the British colonisation, which ended in 1960. They hold regular marches across the country’s south-east calling for a breakaway and the release of their leader Nnamdi Kanu, head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob).

Pro-Biafran activists in southeastern Nigeria have been urged to create a Biafra United Front to continue their struggle for independence and defend themselves against Nigeria’s alleged violence. The Washington-based Organisation of Emerging African States (Oeas), which fights to achieve “true freedom” in Africa, is now calling on all pro-Biafran groups to put aside their internal differences and come together to achieve independence.

This to me is the beginning of a possible US involvement in an internal Nigerian problem…..why?

US troops have been deployed to Nigeria’s neighbor Niger in an attempt to counter the rise and the raids by Boko Haram……

…….around 100 US troops have been deployed in the West African nation of Niger in what officials said was the establishment of a new drone base there to spy on Islamist fighters in the Sahara and support French forces in the region.

“This deployment will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the region,” Obama said in a letter to Congress published on the White House website.

US troops have been used in the past to help a “friendly” government….and with the US expanded presence in the world and especially in West Africa….it is a situation that needs to be watched and analyzed…..it is only a matter of time before this explodes yet again and the US may well be drawn into yet another insurrection that could mean more violence directed at Americans…..

Who Do you Love?

Hillary Clinton the last Republican in the 2016 race…….The Democratic party is NO longer the party of the people….it now is the party of the top 10%….

There are some candidates of the people…..and then there are those that have NO idea what a working person goes through in their daily lives….

Any Questions?

The Party Can No Longer Decide

Yes my friends, this old radical actually reads the American Conservative….that has surprised many over the years but I believe that a good idea can come from many sources even those I may not agree with on much……

I remember after the complete humiliating defeat of the GOP in 2012….the party went through a soul searching phase which lead them to do an autopsy on the party looking for ways to improve their chances of a national; election win….they isolated many problems that they were determined to fix….sadly they flushed the finding down the toilet and just kept on keeping on…….business as usual……

And today the party is more fractured than any time in the last 50 years…..and many are saying that the GOP may not survive this nominating process and that they will once again come up short in an election…..

So the question is……Is you is or is you ain’t….?

If 2012 was the presidential election in which data-driven journalism really came into its own, the 2016 Republican nomination contest has been the one in which the conventional wisdom has continually
