Ever noticed that when the media hands us a crisis to be afraid of, then gun sales hit record heights……there is of course ISIS and Ebola and….well hard to pen down the crisis du jour for Americans….but as I have said…..we need a good……why?
The number of Americans who live in a household with at least one gun is lower than it has ever been, according to a major American trend survey that finds the decline in gun ownership is paralleled by a reduction in the number of Americans who hunt. According to the latest General Social Survey, 32% of Americans either own a firearm themselves or live with someone who does, which ties a record low set in 2010. That marks a significant decline since the late 1970s and early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun in their household. In 1977, 32% said they lived in a household with at least one hunter, but less than half that number say so now.
Data from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System suggest the total number of firearms being purchased is going up. But those are concentrated in fewer hands than they were in the 1980s, the General Social Survey finds. The poll found that 22% of Americans own a firearm, down from a high of 31% who said so in 1985. The survey also finds a shrinking gender gap in personal firearm ownership, but a growing age gap, with 14% of adults under age 35 and 31% of those over age 65 saying they personally own a gun. In 1980, younger adults were only slightly less likely than older ones to report that they owned a gun.
Maybe the NRA should work harder on ‘everyone’ owning a gun and stop worrying about the price of bullets…..if they lose any more support then the firearm industry will have to kick in more cash….and if that is not profitable then they may have second thoughts about their bought and paid for politicians……
However the recent shooting in Ferguson ought to make sells soar again….thanx to the media.
Whatcha think?
If someone called you up — out of the blue — and asked if you kept a valuable piece of property, let’s say “gold or silver coins” in your home — how would you answer?
Wouldn’t you be a little reluctant to tell that unknown person over the phone you had that valuable commodity?
Perhaps gun owners are doing the same thing, especially in the light of the government’s unethical behavior; see “Fast & Furious gun running”, cops lying on warrants about drugs/guns, etc.
Bob S.
I would tell them to talk to my accountant…..on the other point….you may be right but gun owners are pretty proud of their ownership…the 2nd and all….
Sure we are proud of our ownership — but we aren’t stupid either.
If asked do I support the RKBA — absolutely I answer. But I’m not going to tell someone I don’t know if I have a vacation scheduled, if I keep valuables in the house, how new my car is either.
All things criminals can use to target houses.
It has become increasingly difficult to contact potential respondents and to persuade them to participate. The percentage of households in a sample that are successfully interviewed – the response rate – has fallen dramatically. At Pew Research, the response rate of a typical telephone survey was 36% in 1997 and is just 9% today.
The general decline in response rates is evident across nearly all types of surveys, in the United States and abroad. At the same time, greater effort and expense are required to achieve even the diminished response rates of today.
Now that quote is in regards to political polling — wouldn’t the difficulties be even greater in regards to potential confiscation – after all, we know the NSA and other agencies have no issues hacking private organizations.
And think about the liberals answering the questions — “hey you believe in all the far left wing statist ideals of the democratic party; but do you own any guns?”
Think they might be a little hesitant to answer truthfully?
Bob S.
Are these the same people that fell for an scam by people pretending to be IRS to the tune of $15 million….or maybe the ones that believed the emails a few years back that said if you file a return they would come for your gun?
to answer that question for them…..yes I own guns! a 45 and 9mm and mini 14 and a AK….would like to come visit? Just come on in the back door sometime?
The government already knows the weapons I have…if they were obtained legally.
Lobetero,
The government already knows the weapons I have…if they were obtained legally.
Exactly how will they know that? Unless you live in a state where registration is required.
NICS records are supposed to be destroyed, BATFE isn’t supposed to take copies of the the 4473s from stores.
So exactly how will the federal government know you have a firearm?
And while the government is a concern, I’m more worried about being targeted by criminals. Yes, the same people who fall for stupid scams are often the same ones who tell people they don’t know they have firearms……….
Bob S.
How do you think the cops know when they do forensics?
Spend more time think and less time ranting
Guess you get a lot of your knowledge of forensics from TV dramas.
Sorry but cops can’t take an expended round and from that alone identify a particular firearm.
So again how will they know unless your guns are registered that you own them?
NO I was a cop. Are you dense? Every gun made is registered…the maker has a list and that list is open to the police….has been since the 70’s. ALL guns have riflings except shotguns and riflings vary from gun to gun….the gun is test fired when made and the results and serial number is….wait for it ….REGISTERED in a data base….
Should I speak more slowly?
Tah!
“the total number of firearms being purchased is going up. But those are concentrated in fewer hands”</i.
My best guess is this is the don’t tread on me crowd who feel certain that tyranny in America is just a jack-booted step away
and it is close if Graham wins the presidency…..
Lobotero,
Getting upset because your world view is being questioned shows how little your have faith in your argument.
Every gun made is registered…the maker has a list and that list is open to the police….has been since the 70’s.
Yes, ever firearm is registered — and then it is sold to a distributor and then sold to a retailer and then possibly sold again and again.
So yes, the government can trace a firearm to the first retailer. But even then the government does not know who has firearms; they have to track it down and since most 4473s are not electronic; that means the retailer has to find the form and let them know.
ALL guns have riflings except shotguns and riflings vary from gun to gun….the gun is test fired when made and the results and serial number is….wait for it ….REGISTERED in a data base….
And your lack of knowledge of manufacturing practices is showing. Ballistic fingerprinting is vastly over-rated. Until a firearm develops distinguishing characteristics through use, there is little to differentiate it and another barrel made at the same time.
So the unless you live in a state with registration; the government does not know which firearms you have. They can figure it out, but again it isn’t as easy as TV dramas make it out to be.
Thanks for serving as a cop but that doesn’t mean you have the only truth or all of the facts.
Perhaps you just getting upset like so many cops do when your authority is questioned (I have this image of you screaming at the screen in your best Cartman voice “RESPECT MAH AUTHORITY”).
All the more reason for the government not to know who owns each firearm.
Bob S.
Is that it? Well I have met a person of extreme intelligence try a little thought and logic….is that a possibility?
Thanx for your visit it is ever so rewarding….TAH!
Lobotero,
Why can’t you answer a simple question — without resorting the the logical fallacy of ‘appeal to authority’ — of how the government will know you own firearms?
I’ve cited the relevant law showing, as I’ve repeatedly said, without living in a state with registration == exactly how will the police know you own firearms.
Can you or can you not answer that simple question?
Bob S.
