A Very Successful Con Job

I always like to hear about a good con job, especially political ones….you know like the con job that tax cuts will create jobs and increase revenue…..or that national health care will create death panels….just to mention a few….I recently saw a report that leads me to believe there has been a ten year successful con job perpetuated on the American people….

Since the attack on 9/11, a day we observe as Patriots Day….today….has started a deluge of misinformation by a number of sources to foment hatred of Muslims….if you have watched any news organizations shows then you will recall at least one such report of the creeping sharia law or some such …….

But a recent report from the Center for American Progress,  has shed a little more light on what is really going on….with the help of “think tanks” and so-called “experts” the American people have been bombarded with tons of misinformation…..

The 130-page report, ‘Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America’, identifies seven foundations that have quietly provided a total of more than 42 million dollars to key individuals and organisations that have spearheaded the nation-wide effort between 2001 and 2009.The network also includes what the report calls “misinformation experts” – including Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy (CSP), Daniel Pipes of the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum (MEF), Steven Emerson of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, David Yerushalmi of the Society of Americans for National Existence, and Robert Spencer of Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) – who are often tapped by television news networks and right-wing radio talk shows to comment on Islam and the threat it allegedly poses to U.S. national security.

“This small band of radical ideologues has fought to define Sharia as a ‘totalitarian ideology’ and legal- political-military doctrine committed to destroying Western civilization,” the report said. “But a scholar of Islam and Muslim tradition would not recognise their definition of Sharia, let alone a lay practicing Muslim.”

Nonetheless, the group’s messages receive wide dissemination by what the report calls an “Islamophobia echo chamber” consisting of leaders of the Christian Right, such as Franklin Graham and Pat Robertson, and some Republican politicians, such as presidential candidates Representative Michele Bachmann and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich.

This report was released on August 26, 2011 and was NOT covered by any media….I guess we could blame Irene for the lack of attention and by the time the hurricane had run its course…..the report was not considered newsworthy…..

I read the report and just wanted people to know that NOT everything you hear about Muslims is the truth….that some have this desire to have Americans hate someone or something……even if those they hate are Americans….and that my friends…is the truly sad part!

Ya Wanna Piss Off A Conserv?

In my writings and discussions that I have with fellow analysts and political geeks….I am always looking for the easiest ways to piss off a conserv….it always throws them off their argument….if you can find that one statement that can do the most to confuse and frustrate your enemy (by enemy, I am talking about a debate opponent….not some lunatic thing that all conservs are fascist or some such)……..

Personally, I am tired of being called….socialist……un-American…….etc…….there has got to be another way to fight these accusations………

Another Con Job?

Politics seems to be more and more just a con job, a scam, perpetuated on the American people…just think back over the last couple of years…..change…a con…..death panels, a con……just to mention a few…..the whole of American politics is based in some con or another….whether it is jobs or the economy or international situations, everything is a con!

I have watched the “third” way in politics over the decades…..you know Green Party candidates, independent candidates, etc, etc……there seems to be always some form of the “third” way in any election……back in 2006 I got involved in a group called Unity08…..in case you do not recall them….

Unity08 was an American political reform movement that sought to offer all voters an opportunity to directly engage in politics by ranking the most crucial issues facing the country, discussing them with the candidates and engaging in an online, secure vote to nominate a bipartisan alternative to the Democratic Party and Republican Party presidential tickets for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.   Founded in 2006, the group gained attention from various media outlets, with Newsweek‘s Jonathan Alter dubbing the group’s efforts a kind of open sourcepolitics……Unity08 had four major goals:

  1. Enable Americans to rank America’s most crucial issues.
  2. Empower Americans to draft or evaluate Unity08 candidates and actively engage them in debate about the crucial issues.
  3. Empower Americans to nominate a bipartisan Unity ticket via an online convention and secure voting process.
  4. Elect the Unity08 presidential ticket to national office.

The Unity08 presidential ticket was to consist of two candidates that come from different political parties. This bipartisan team was to propose a bipartisan cabinet in an effort to end paralysis in government. Co-founder Doug Bailey explained “What we are trying to do is to create a forum for people who are in the middle who have been left out of politics.”

It was a valiant attempt to try to inject a little sanity into the election…..the group disbanded in 2008, way before the election, citing that funding was a major obstacle……to me it look like a con job that sole purpose was to get Michael Bloomberg to enter into the race as an independent, but they wanted us mortals to offer up a combo of Dems/Repubs that would be a balancing ticket to the crazy of the two party system……

Recently, I have seen an alternative to the two party system…they call themselves……Americans Elect 2012……..on the surface it sounds like a good idea….but the more I thought about it, it seemed that it sounded a bit familiar…….

The official website for Americans Elect states that the organization has no ties to any political group – left, right, or center – and does not promote any issues, ideology or candidates. Any constitutionally eligible, qualified citizen—no matter their party—can seek the nomination, or be drafted by the delegates.   Other materials produced by Americans Elect state that the organization will promote the “sensible center”, centrist budgetary views, and a resurgence of centrist politics. The bylaws of Americans Elect state “The ticket shall be balanced around centrist principles…”

The co-founder of the Personal Democracy Forum has argued that this announced “centrist” ideology is inconsistent with the organization’s stated commitment to an open, democratic process, because delegates given a free choice might select a candidate whom the directors did not consider centrist.

Americans Elect 2012 is an organization that was formed by many of the individuals that were responsible for Unity 08, and has substantially identical goals for the 2012 presidential election cycle.

I knew it was too good to be a coincidence!  Check into it if you are looking for a ‘third” way….but keep in mind that it could be a con job to get you to nominate those that the founders want to run the country….you are just a tool to get them there…..

Shall We Try a Third Party? (Again)

The weekend is over….and I know the people along the Eastern Coast are happy as Hell…..now we return to the world of cowards, liars and pundits…..politics will be up and running…….so onward and upward!

Remember the media whore…Nader and his 3rd party run?  Some could argue that he assisted in the Bush years…….or how about Buchanan or Anderson or Perot or Wallace or yada, yada…….there is always another party besides the horrible two…..we just do not hear about them as much…..and that is the fault of the media….that do NOT want a third party….they are happy to promote the two party system….any more than that and they will have to re-tool their rhetoric……

This election cycle….we have a Dem president and a whole array of whack jobs that are trying desperately to win the GOP nomination……and we have not heard from the usual suspects that seem to always try to nose their way into the political stage….you know, parties like Libertarian, Reform, Green on and on……but could this election cycle be different?

This time around we have the possibility of a real lunatic becoming the nominee of the GOP…..if that happens could we see a sane person try to peel off and run as 3rd party?  A sane person……say Huntsman…..I am not a big supporter but he does speak like he has at least half a brain which is twice as much as the rest of the field…..

But what could be the straw that breaks the 2 party back?  According to Matthew Dowd of the National Journal…….

I have created the scenario for an opening for a third-party run. So what are the likely outcomes if that happens (and as each day passes, it becomes increasingly possible that an independent could run) in the general election?

1. Based on the allocation of votes around the country; the Electoral College, which makes third-party success very hard; and the history of failed third-party candidacies, it is unlikely that an independent could actually be elected president. The deck is just stacked in favor of the two major parties, and the inherent electoral structure makes it incredibly difficult for anyone else to win.

2. The third-party candidate draws a large minority percentage of the vote, but doesn’t win any states (and thus, electoral votes). This scenario likely would reelect Obama, who then would just need 38 percent of the vote nationally to succeed. He could win enough states with a vote percentage in the 40’s to gather a majority of electoral votes. The Republican base would be below this threshold; and without enough votes to back the GOP nominee to kick Obama out of office because of the third-party siphon effect, Republicans would watch as a president without a majority of the votes gets reelected. This has happened a number of times in American political history.

3. The third-party candidate is able to win enough states (and hence electoral votes), to actually block both major-party candidates from winning the required 270 electoral votes. The election would then be thrown into the House of Representatives, which — when looking at how the voting works — would likely elects the Republican candidate. Why? Because each state is given one vote in this eventuality, and the congressional delegation from each state gets to decide how that one vote is cast. So Alaska gets the same power as California! Today, Republicans almost always win more states in national elections, and they will likely hold a majority of the delegations state-by-state in a new Congress. (At present, they hold the majority in 33 delegations.)

Dowd has some good thoughts about the possibility of a third party or even an independent…..but how successful do YOU think it would be?

Is There Synthetic Life?

My last day of enjoyment for the sake of enjoyment….tomorrow I return to the world of ginned up issues, misinformation and bad acting….or as it is called in the media…..POLITICS!

Recently I posted on a computer that could make rational decisions on its own and I compared it with I, Robot……..but what about the idea of synthetic life?

I found this on the Live Science website…….

Synthetic organisms engineered to use carbon dioxide as a raw material could help humans settle Mars one day, a prominent biologist says.

Man-made, CO2-munching lifeforms are already in the works, geneticist Craig Venter told a crowd here during an event called TEDxNASA@SiliconValley Wednesday night (Aug. 17). Venter and his team, who made headlines last year by creating the world’s first synthetic organism, are trying to design cells that can use atmospheric carbon dioxide to make food, fuel, plastics and other products.

This ability would obviously have huge implications here on Earth, but it could also help make Mars — whose thin atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide — a more livable place, Venter said.

There is more on the artificial stuff made more human……

Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, have developed a new technology that may help robots feel, give the sense of touch back to those with prosthetic limbs, and ultimately help robots do the dishes without breaking them (and while they’re at it, maybe make a sandwich without turning it into land of the flatlanders).

The material is built using semiconductor nanowires that can operate using low voltages, and it’s more flexible than previous inorganic synthetic skins. This “e-skin” is also stronger than its competing organic materials. Organic materials are also poor semiconductors, and require a higher voltage to operate. The Berkeley group’s synthetic skin can either be transferred to another material like a plastic or glass by either directly transferring it over from a flat substrate which is then “rubbed” onto a polymer film made of polyamide. It can also be “rolled” onto the surface using a device that works much like a lint roller in reverse; the fibers are deposited to a sticky surface rather than picked up.

The e-skin can detect pressure in the range from 0 to 15 kilopascals, or similar to the pressure needed to perform normal daily tasks. In other words, when your cyber-being goes to clean the wine glasses from last night’s party, it won’t break them, and when your robot goes to make you a sandwich, it won’t flatten it to the size of your silicon microprocessor.

I do not know about you….but all this stuff is beginning to sound a bit like…..I, Robot!

If successful….it starts off small and morphs from there.  So is this the beginning of the end……(a tease)……a super smart micro chip…..a computer that thinks for itself….and now able to invent synthetic life……How soon will it be before we have a “Bladerunner” scenario?

Captain, There Is An Anti-Matter Imbalance!

Another weekend and another couple of days of thinking about something other than the pissed up world of politics.  It is refreshing not to think about the morons we elect…..

Remember in almost every episode and movie in the Star Trek series…..Scotty would always report that there was some sort of engine problem like an anti-matter imbalance that would destroy the warp coils or something just as destructive?

Well, that is out of the way………I do not know just how much we spend as a nation or a planet trying to create and then capture an anti-matter molecule…..in Cern Switzerland or some place in the Midwest we have these huge colliders that are used to create anti-matter….okay, but just what is anti-matter?

Let Wikipedia help……

In particle physics, antimatter is the extension of the concept of the antiparticle to matter, where antimatter is composed of antiparticles in the same way that normal matter is composed of particles. For example, a positron (the antiparticle of the electron or e+
) and an antiproton (p) can form an antihydrogen atom in the same way that an electron and a proton form a normal matter hydrogen atom. Furthermore, mixing matter and antimatter can lead to the annihilation of both in the same way that mixing antiparticles and particles does, thus giving rise to high-energy photons (gamma rays) or other particle–antiparticle pairs. The result of antimatter meeting matter is an explosion

In other words anti-matter is very difficult to create and capture….if only there were another way to get the anti-matter we need to study …..here’s an idea……

The find, described in Astrophysical Journal Letters, confirms theoretical work that predicted the Earth’s magnetic field could trap antimatter.

The team says a small number of antiprotons lie between the Van Allen belts of trapped “normal” matter.

The researchers say there may be enough to implement a scheme using antimatter to fuel future spacecraft.

The antiprotons were spotted by the Pamela satellite (an acronym for Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) – launched in 2006 to study the nature of high-energy particles from the Sun and from beyond our Solar System – so-called cosmic rays.

The new analysis, described in an online preprint, shows that when Pamela passes through a region called the South Atlantic Anomaly, it sees thousands of times more antiprotons than are expected to come from normal particle decays, or from elsewhere in the cosmos. The team says that this is evidence that bands of antiprotons, analogous to the Van Allen belts, hold the antiprotons in place – at least until they encounter the normal matter of the atmosphere, when they “annihilate” in a flash of light.

Although normal matter particles outweigh the antiprotons by thousands to one, the band is “the most abundant source of antiprotons near the Earth”, said Alessandro Bruno of the University of Bari, a co-author of the work.

If possible….look at the cash that this discovery could save the world……

I know I am a political nerd, but stuff like this just fascinates the crap out of me….and as you can imagine….that could get a bit messy……

Enjoy your weekend!

What’s In A Name?

My whole life I had heard that question……so I got to thinking about it and came up with a few things….

Is it spelled with a G or Q or K?

According to a 2009 blog post from ABC news, there are over 112 ways that news media has written the name of possibly crazy Libyan president, Muammar Qaddafi, since 1998. ABC, by the way, spells it Moammar Gaddafi.Yesterday a piece published by the Christian Science Monitor shows that the Associated Press, CNN, and MSNBC spell it “Moammar Gadhafi,” the New York Times spells it “Muammar el-Qaddafi,” the Los Angeles Times writes “Moammar Kadafi,” and Reuters, the Guardian, and the BBC go with “Muammar Gaddafi.”

His name, rendered in Arabic, is “معمر القذافي,” roughly transliterates to “Muamar AlQadafi.” The part with his last name in question, is begins with a “ق” a Qoph, an Arabic letter that is definitely a “K”

Please can we just agree on one simple spelling of the name?  I realize that soon it will not make much of a difference but until he is either captured or killed….a standardized spelling of his name would be nice….

Remember back in ’08 there was that guy that McCain made a plumber and he went on to become a bit of a side show?  Joe the Plumber.  Well we may not have heard the last of that screaming morn…..

The Toledo Blade reports that Joe Wurzelbacher (R), who was often referred to as “Joe the Plumber” during the 2008 presidential campaign, is considering launching a challenge to Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH).

Plumber?  Is not that the name of the crooks and spooks that broke in the Watergate for Nixon?  Just saying.

For weeks now I have heard MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow talking the Google problem that Rick Santorum has……she keeps telling me that Santorum is not the first thing that comes up when you Google the name….after weeks of this I just had to see what she is talking about…..and BLAM!

If you Google the word Santorum you get this…..

1. The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.  2.  Rick Santorum………

Okay now I see what she is talking about and let me say….HAHAHAHAHA!

Bing is a bit more kind to Ricky.  But (no pun intended) some names just say it all, huh?

Does Crazy Make The Best Leaders?

During the current election cycle we have had many, many candidates and those that pretend to be candidates….some logical, some calculation and some that just sound like a mad hatter……but what about those that sound crazy….would they make a good leader?  Even if they are a stone loon?

It seems there has been a bit research in this area and the findings show that being MAD could work for the good of the country.  This reported on the Newser website……

People often complain about the madness of America’s leaders in Washington—but what if that madness is actually a good thing? After looking at famous leaders from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, Dr. Nassir Ghaemi has concluded that being manic or depressed often makes for better leaders, reports NPR. “Historians have often not paid much attention to these features of their lives; they’ve just written them off as irrelevant to their leadership,” said Ghaemi. “I wanted to show that these symptoms not only were present in their lives, but were relevant to their leadership.” “Creativity and resilience is higher in people with mania, and realism and empathy is higher in people with depression compared to normal subjects,” said Ghaemi, who has just published the book A First-Rate Madness: Uncovering the Links Between Leadership and Mental Illness. “The problem often with mentally healthy, average leaders is—even though they’re not weak in the sense of not having any of these qualities—they often don’t have enough to meet the very high demands of crises.” Ghaemi also speculates that one of the big problems with “No drama Obama” is that the current president might just be too normal. “And in fact, if he had a little bit of drama to him, it might be quite helpful.”

You may think that some of the candidates are not wrapped real tight….but research says…..not to dismiss them out of hand….our next leader could be a mad hatter…..and could possibly be good for the country…..(pause here for raucous laughter)…….NO!  I do not believe either but it was an interesting post to write……

Peace!

You Want Change?

In 2008 we all fell for the con job of change and hope…..we have had neither in almost 3 years and now we are about to enter into the 2012 primary season…..and once again I hear the word change being thrown around but this time it is from the Right.

I have written a couple of post on a way to achieve REAL change not the veiled promises of bought and paid for politicians…….You Want Change?  Then read these posts first…..http://t.co/18gNDYo

That one post has other post referenced…please read them…they will help explain where I am coming from….

There are others who feel as I do….that this system of picking our leaders is useless and antiquated…….

The following criteria are listed in [an] LWV study:

  • Ensure majority rule. Most major political races currently can be won with only a plurality.
  • Encourage minority representation, where minority is defined by either party or cultural
  • affiliation.
  • Encourage fair gender representation.
  • Produce fair and accurate representation of diverse political views in legislatures.
  • Increase voter participation.
  • Encourage geographical representation.
  • Encourage “sincere” voting, as opposed to “strategic” voting.
  • Maximize effective votes/minimize “wasted” votes.
  • Provide a reasonable range of voter choice.
  • Prevent fraud and political manipulation.
  • Encourage competitive elections

–League of Women Voters in Oregon, Criteria for Evaluating Election Systems, Election Methods: Review of Alternatives and Oregon, Proposals, Executive Summary

All these are reasonable and logical and rational changes that could go a long way to changing the way that we are governed….the system we have now is NOT doing the people of the US any good….it only perpetuates the exploitation of the voter……

Like I have said…there are several others that have valid ideas for giving the people the final voice in the governing of the country…..try this one on……http://t.co/7U8uCSZ   ……..A group named “Get Out Of Our House (GOOOH)”…..personally I think that they are on to something here….

Anything has GOT to be better than the joke, the circus that we have now!
