And they just cannot shut up! Repubs are showing their true colors when it comes to the Gulf oil spill…..Barton apologizes to BP for them having to contribute to a fund to pay costs of the spill and now Mississppi’s governopr Haley Barbour is echoing the same type of sentiment about the oil spill…
Mississippi’s Republican governor, Haley Barbour, said on Sunday that the temporary moratorium on offshore drilling imposed by the Obama administration is worse than the catastrophic oil spill caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig.”Governor, what’s worse, the moratorium or the effects of this spill on the region?” asked “Meet the Press” host David Gregory on Sunday. Barbour responded, “Well, the moratorium… the spill’s a terrible thing, but the moratorium is a terrible thing that’s not only bad for the region, it’s bad for America.”
Amazing huh? A moratorium is more devastating than the spill…….and the people of Mississippi voted this idiot into office….TWICE! This shows his lack of concern for the people of the state and how they make a living…there is also the fact that he, like Barton, are only reciting what most Repubs are thinking and believing….and this is a guy who could make a run for the presidency…..if he wins…God save the country!
Well, of course. But then it could also be true…
Okay I will bite…in what way?
Well, it depends on what the side effects of this supposed “moretorium” (that a federal judge has now thrown out) are. I don’t know enough about the US economy, medium term economic strategy, or for that matter oil. But supposing this, for instance (as I suspect may turn out to be the case in the UK)…
Suppose this increases the importance of Arab oil. Realising this, suppose OBL manages to organise a coupe in some very oil rich Arab state – say Dubai (or Saudi – his homeland) for instance in cohorts with Iran. What do you think would be the result of that for the West?
I venture to suggest a huge hike in the cost of fuel, which could well lead to the complete destabilisation of industry and commerce and thus result eventually in the total destruction of the Western way of life – or at least the suspension of it for decades.
Bear in mind that we are really still suffering from the last great hike in prices 30 odd years ago (was it?) when the Arabs decided to put aside their family feuds and gang up on us in the West. Any increased measure of independence from the Gulf States is to be welcomed – heck, being cynical about it, we might never have bothered with wars in Kuwait, Iraq or even Afghanistan (Saddam Hussein’s original intention – plan B at least – was to take Kuwait out of the equation and thus up the value of his own oil and the power that came from it).
I’m just saying it may not be as simple as it appears. I doubt this jerk has any idea of these possible ramifications, but he might still be right by accident.
😆
Okey Dokey……the moratorium was to be on exploratory rigs. The US gets less than 1% of its domestic oil from deep wells. Most of the oil imported comes from Mexico and Venezuela and a bit from Nigeria. There are other ops that work can be found including drilling. Most of the workers on deep wells are from Louisiana. The state is losing 10 times the money from the spill than from the lack of rig work.
OK – it’s just not that simple. The quantity of oil available in five or ten years time (it will take THAT long to get REAL alternatives off the ground even with the will to do it – which is currently lacking) is a GLOBAL thing and that is what controls the price and supply – NOT where your particular oil comes from at the moment – UNLESS you control it!
Any improved self-sufficiency is to be considered important (perhaps vital) and the problem is not NOW but the FUTURE – so exploration is FAR more important than current oil. Mexico and Venezuela could just decide to say “fuck you” in the future and then there’d be ANOTHER war to pay for with lives and money!
I see where you are going with this and you are right…….however (instead of but) as the state governor to make that statement was just wrong! If it was not for the Coastal counties in Mississippi then the state would be worse than it is now…..these three counties pay the bills for the state or at least 3/4 of the bills…..it has ALL the tourism…ALL the seafood….and ALL the appeal.
I will agree about the future…but we as a country need to look beyond the minimal oil supplies that we have and look to the future and alt energy….this country will lose a perfectly good opportunity to change the face of our addiction….we will fail…the addict will continue.
