The Tea Party Convention has come and gone and is now in the history books, well the books that neo-cons want us to read……all in all the convention was a success but then there was good old reliable Tom Tancredo, former congressman from Colorado…it seems his comments on the first night of the convention have him in a bit of a pickle…….
“Because we don’t have a civics literacy test to vote, people who couldn’t even spell ‘vote,’ or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House named Barack Hussein Obama.”
Tancredo simply calls it good public policy to require citizens to pass a civics literacy test to be allowed to vote.
“To suggest that a civics literacy test will necessarily be discriminatory is absurd,” said Tancredo. “I have long advocated a civics literacy test for voters, and have often suggested we could use the same test as used for immigrants seeking to become naturalized citizens.”
If he gets his way we all will have to take a literacy test, but if I am not mistaken amendment 15 of the US Constitution pretty much says that it cannot be done…but why let the Constitution get in the way of your ranting and raving?
But if we as voters have to take a literacy test then why not make it mandatory that the people that represent us have a knowledge of the civics that Tancredo is so worried about? Just in the last year prominent politicians have been caught on youtube show their ignorance of the Constitution…..for example, the minority leader of the House of Representatives at a rally held up the Constitution and quoted the Declaration of Independence……these people use the Constitution as a prop to stand on while they deliver their soliloquy….I would prefer that the reps in Washington understand Civics more than the voter…after all they are the ones making decisions for us and they are ignorant of the stuff government is made of……
What is next? The color of ones hair? Or maybe where you live? What is next? When will you people have had enough of these ass clowns that you send to Washington? Tancredo is an opportunist…he is looking for an audience for his next endeavor…the nomination….
Well, firstly, I think it’s a good idea… for politicians to pass a test that is – an intelligence test and they’d be required to score more highly than an average chimpanzee to qualify too – that’d rule at least half of them out!
Secondly, it’s no good complaining at the people that they don’t pick someone better when they are only given two assholes to choose between – asshole-1 or asshole-2 is no choice, so what difference does it make?
That’s made especially true because, even if they do, very occasionally, by some miracle, manage to find a “good guy”, he’s rapidly tied up and completely neutralised by the corrupt and stupid system anyway.
and money are his/her bindings……it is never about what is right or wrong….but how much cash it is worth….
Of course – like I keep on saying to everyone: it’s not the people, it’s the system! If the system is stupid and corrupt, then it will mainly attract stupid and corrupt people to it. The few that aren’t that way and naively think they can really “make a difference” quickly become absorbed by it and turn that way or get out… they usually just sink in the mire and mostly disappear without trace.
we have only one really outstanding senator, Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont….actually he is a socialist….but calls himself a n independent…..he has an 90% voting record on issues that effect the middle class…….at least he tries but he is huge minority….
I appreciate the sentiments of what you’re saying and I agree, but let’s get two things straight right now…
1. anyone actually CALLING themselves a socialist in the US might as well admit on prime time TV that they live in the Kremlin for all the chance they’d have of being elected if they did…
2. You don’t even know what real socialists are in America – if you met some real old style Brit socialists, you’d think they made Kruschev and Stalin look like right wing pussy cats. To them the middle classes are from the same muck heap as rich bastards and royalty, which is why they feel completely justified in fiddling their expenses because the people they represent (or think they do) pay little or no taxes. Let’s face it, most of them have never had a job!
So very true on all accounts……here the “socialists” were more worried about ideology than actually helping the masses….most socialist here in the states are pretty much democratic socialists or a type of social democrat……we do have some hard core ones but they are all but forgotten…..
