I have not had much to say of the recent earthquake in Haiti…..because what can we say?…As a survivor of Katrina I feel for the suffering that the Haitian people are going through and I wish them well and their families stay intact……
You have heard all the BS on the airwaves…..the Right wingnuts as well as some on the Left…all are idiots…but there are some that are bigger morons than others…..especially if they are using it for political or financial gain…and then there are the biggest IDIOTS like 700 Club’s Par Robertson:
“And you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French, you know, Napoleon the Third and whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’ True story. And so the devil said, ‘O.K., it’s a deal.’
“It was bad enough that he said the successful slave revolt came during the reign of “Napoleon III, or whatever” (the Haitian Revolution led by Francois-Dominique Toussaint L’ouverture was in fact completed in 1804 when Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France, 44 years before his nephew Napoleon III came to power). But here in Haiti’s former colonial master, talk about the Robertson “theory” clouds with myth an early if awkward chapter in self-determination: the Haitian slaves are considered the first to collectively and successfully overthrow their colonial masters. In this case, the French. (As reported in the Christian Science Monitor)
I want on the record as saying that I think this yo-yo is a screaming moron……and if this is God’s doing…that rules out the Merciful God theory altogether……
If this feeble old man does not realize how ignorant he appears then there is a possibility that he needs to be tested for Alzheimer’s…….
Sorry, Lobotero, I disagree completely…
This sort of utterly ridiculous bigotry goes WAY beyond any possible Alzheimer effect!!!!!!!
I tend to (generally) stay out of religion because I think that people’s beliefs are personal and their own, but when you get this sort of totally… sorry, I don’t have words fo it, it so far beyond stupid, that I don’t think there IS a word for it.
How will the human race EVER progress, or even continue to exist, unless all this religious shit can be relegated to the myths and fairy tales shelf where it belongs? It’s NOT God that’s evil, or the Devil – they are creations of man’s imagination, not the other way round – it is PEOPLE who are often disgustingly evil, or occasionally not! 😡
I try to remain out of it also…but there are times when stupidity just cannot be ignored….and this is one of the stupidest statements I have heard in awhile…
It seems that condemning the Haitians is popular with the churches. My wife’s church asked everyone to pray for them and something about their wicked ways. People like Robertson is why I have such a low opinion of organized religion.
You and me, both!
You ans me both brothers!…BTW…well said Quin….I knew I heard it somewhere…..
The willingness of some to believe in this—the devil and the French did it, and all that—points to the incredible job done on many Americans by Cold War propaganda. Not only did it distract them for decades, it blocked out the real history that was going on in the places where American foreign policy was applied. I mean the basic, step by step history.
I bet the vast majority of Americans don’t realize that Wilson ordered the U.S. Marines to invade Haiti in 1913, when they set up a new government, or that the military commander actually wrote a new constitution for the island (he dictated it to his secretary). The island remained under U.S. control until ’47and then in the fifties the nightmare of Papa Doc, also America’s man in Haiti, began. Again, the Marines were called in to run the “public works” but their real job was to prop up Duvalier. Who needs to talk about the Devil, or the CIA, when it’s the Marines doing all the heavy lifting?
Sometimes I think all the attention paid to the creepy goings on of the CIA in American media is a way to draw attention from the real application of military power. A whole half-century of history has been lost in America.
